Great video. Thought that I'd share some additional information based on my 6 years of feeding Prey Model Raw to our three dogs: Eggs: Our two biggest dogs have learned to crack whole, raw eggs (we had to "show" them how to do it at the start but they learned quickly. Our smallest dog (12 lbs) never quite learned how to crack the egg so obviously we crack the egg for her. Big dogs (70 and 50 lbs) get two eggs weekly, smallest gets one. Only one of our three will eat egg shells. So, we wash the other two's shells in dishwater, rinse, then put the shells on a plate on a window ledge. When these two get eggs, we grind the dried eggshells in a coffee or spice grinder and sprinkle it over their meals. Our smallest dog wouldn't eat pork or beef liver. Since liver (5% of total diet - and be careful not not feed excessively) is important, we had to find a solution. We cut the liver into relatively smaller pieces and seared it quickly in a very hot frying pan. Just so the outside is browned. This was kind of a pain but we gradually fed larger, less-seared pieces. After about 2 weeks, she would then eat liver uncooked. I supplement with pure Salmon Oil and daily maintenance does of canine Glucosamine. In conclusion, I think you have published a wonderfully informative and useful video. You will get a big "thumbs up" from me. Thanks.

I have been researching raw feeding for weeks and getting completely lost in all the information found on the internet. Your video has summed up nearly everything I found (and more) and made it much easier to understand. Thank you from the bottom of my dog-lovin heart for the time and effort you put into this.

Yeah! Do you have a rough idea of the adult weight of your dog? That’s the easiest way. I could give you an estimate based on current age and size as well, but it might vary more as he or she grows

I applaud your feeding raw, as well as your efforts in posting this video! Thank you. I've been feeding raw for 10 years and although I rarely feed ground meat, I will feed it if it's really cheap. I see that you feed eggs which, I feel, is a good component of a raw food diet ... did you ever try feeding these raw eggs in the shell? It's a treat to watch a dog learn to eat a whole, raw egg. One of my dogs liked eating the eggs, but refused to eat the shells .... solution? I wash the shells in dishwater, rinse them, let them dry on a plate or bowl, then grind a bunch of them up in a coffee or spice grinder: sprinkle a portion on his food whenever I feed an egg. Great point about raw: before doing so (as you said, but worth repeating) do your research: amounts, variety and proportions of bone, meat, organ (liver) and even eggs. I supplement with maintenance canine glucosamine and pure Salmon Oil. Another important point is how to transition your dog from kibble to raw. As for poop? It is amazing. Little smell; usually once a day and disappears quickly. For the record, I'm Prey Model Raw but I support anyone who goes off kibble. That is an incredibly accurate, informative and well-produced video. Thank you.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback! Yes I give my dogs whole eggs in shell now; I think it was a little overwhelming for them the first few months while they were still getting used to eating Whole Foods haha, but they’re old pros now!

IMO, EVERYONE who feeds raw should first read the original 2001 booklet that started it all...THE BARF DIET by Dr. Ian Billinghurst. It s not overly complex and gives a good solid foundation of the basics. One thing I am not sure you show in this video is the need for IODINE (in kelp) and also fully mashed/crushed fresh raw veggies (to mimic the gut contents of a dog's prey). The original Barf Diet suggests a little over-ripe fruit also. I see there are lots of misleading videos here on RU-vid that give incorrect info.
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Mary Mercedes I haven't read that one yet, but I've heard it's good! I didn't touch on supplements much in this video, more recently I did in another video, but yeah I do feed kelp and blended up fruit/veggie blends

Great video. And thanks for the 2% if the weight. I was wondering how much daily to feed raw. My gsd i had in 2000-2009 was fed raw, eggs, deer Heart, chicken but i didn't weigh it out. I just fed til he didn't want it. If he wanted an egg, he'd go get one. After i had to leave my land and couldn't afford to keep feeding him a basic raw diet and put him in kibble, he started getting health issues. The last half of his life he was in steroids and spend 10k (thanks to my parents for that loan) on surgery on him at the best vet in Houston.(the zoo's vet) He spent 10 days In hospital post op. The Dr did suggest rice and pumpkin depending on his stools. I look back now and see the illness started after i had to stop the raw diet. I've thought also too Hispanic and Vietnamese markets for bones and tripe and different organs. Thanks so much for a very informative video and excellent links. I plan on getting another GSD from the Tulsa GSD rescue center and want to go straight raw. We also get Buffalo here with my tribe. So that will be great for red meat. And i love to fish. I had no idea dogs could eat fish and bone of fish. But then i saw a show on the natives in Alaska and northern territories of Canada that have thier dogs and they feed a fish soup, and those dogs pull heavy sleds. 💡 Again thank you for your research. Kind of you to share.

So i wanted to check back with you, my dog was diagnosed with diabetes and I was told he had 3-4 mos to live. He was 10, a mastiffs shepherd cross. He wasn't big on eating any raw. It took time! But it's been 2 years almost and he eats full raw now, and still with me, and while insulin dependent, he's doing well

The video was quite long indeed but it definitely kept my attention from start to finish. I just adopted a new Giant Schnauzer puppy very recently and started feeding raw from day 1. After seeing a bunch of videos regarding raw diet beforehand of course and after watching a video on Netflix regarding the real secret of the kibble industry and how it Kills our pets. Your video is very informative and easy to listen to. I enjoyed every second of it. Thanks!

The Other Parker Yea, he's the perfect candidate for raw diet. He just dove right in and enjoyed every bit of his meal the first time, never looked back. I have a curious question though, is the 80/10/10 a necessity for each meal? Since the pup is only 12 weeks currently, I am feeding him 3-4x a day but only doing the ratios 2x out of 3-4.
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+BreakingFromTheNorm no it doesn't need to be every meal 😊 for a puppy it's a good idea to balance over the course of a day since they are growing so rapidly. Adult dogs you can balance over the course of a week

I found your videos very informing. I also have an indoor/ outdoor cat. and yes I have done research, I'm not finding what I'm looking for. would you do a video on cats. I feel with my research and yours I can find the answers I'm looking for regarding feeding, heart worm, flea other worm preventives. I also like the fact when doing your videos you are down to earth. I have as 45 lb pitbull, and 9 lb shizthu poodle. I want to start raw as they both have digestive issues with kibble. They are both about 1 years old. I need help figuring out portions to start out, and what meats/organs I should start with. Can you help me figure these portions out? I appreciate this video so much!
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 5 лет назад
I definitely can! You’ll want to start off with just chicken the first few weeks, then gradually mix in new meats one at a time. Your pit will eat: 1 lb 2 oz per day, this consists of: 14.4 oz meat, 1.8 oz bone, .9 oz liver, and .9 oz other hormone secreting organ (kidney, brain, spleen, etc) Your poodle mix will eat: 4.3 oz per day 3.44 oz meat, .4 oz bone, .22 oz liver, .22 oz kidney Chicken feet and necks will be ideal bone sources for this pup since they are small and soft. For raw feeding, things like heart, gizzard, and lung are fed as meat, not organ. Hope that helps!

@priayief
@priayief 6 лет назад
Some tips from our experience: We soon learned to use metric for all our calculations - learning metric was far easier than constantly calculating with pounds and ounces. We weigh (and record) our 3 dogs' weights anytime we go to the vet. You quickly get used to what the "ideal" weight is for your pet. Once their weight deviates a certain amount, you can adjust the amounts you feed accordingly (if you've converted to metric, the adjustments are easy). Following are the ages, weights and amounts we feed our dogs weekly: Chance (11 y.o.Goldendoodle) Weight 31.5 kg (70 lbs): Total: 4200 g; Bone: 378 g.; Liver: 210 g; Organ: 210 g (daily total is 1.7% of his total weight) Banjo (9.5 y.o. Mixed breed) Weight 23 kg (51 lbs): Total: 3850 g; Bone: 347 g; Liver: 193 g; Organ:193 g. (daily total is 2.4% of his total weight) Penny (7 y.o. Mixed breed) Weight 5 kg (11 lbs): Total: 910 g; Bone: 82 g; Liver: 46 g; Organ: 46 g (daily total is 1.8% of her total weight) Amounts of bone are adjusted from time-to-time, depending on the nature of their stool. If stool is consistently, loose, we'll add a little more bone (and maybe a little less organ and/or liver). Of course we'll do the opposite in case of constipation. Note that Banjo gets a lot more proportionately than Chance or Penny. I can only guess that's because he is much more active than the other two. Also, he is at the highest acceptable weight that we like. We are considering decreasing his portions by about 10% if, at his next weighing he gains more weight. We've recorded our dogs' weights in a spreadsheet over 6 years. We are pleased we started doing this as it serves as a kind of "health history" (not only do we record dates and weights but also any significant health or physical event that happens - and as well, any adjustments to their diet). Its not easy for pet owners to notice gradual weight gains that add up over the course of time. And all of a sudden, you realize that you pet is grossly overweight. Not a good thing! And as a humorous note: after grooming, each of dogs seems to lose significant weight! Cheers and hope this helps some of you.

Couple of questions. How much freezer space do you use? And what about boarding? How would you go on vacation and maintain consistency. And is it normal for a dog to just not really be interested in raw? I tried a raw chicken wing and neck. He didn’t seem to want to eat it at all.

Just switched my dogs to a raw diet and had been doing so much research beforehand and watched so many videos of other raw feeders but it was so overwhelming! I’m sure over time it’ll become easier but your links and sources are so helpful! One of my huskies poops were also GINORMOUS and very soft while he was on his kibble that he had been eating for a year so I’m really looking forward to him not pooping so often and his stools being too soft. My only problem is that my husky doesn’t not seem to enjoy biting or chewing raw bones which is a surprise since he has killed live chickens before (but had never actually eaten them) the first day was hard because he was very confused about his raw food and didn’t eat it for a minute. I’m hoping after the second week he’ll be used to raw at that point! 🤞🏼

Hi there, Just wondering when I start adding pork and/or beef what kind should I add? I mean should I get something with bones in it or just plain pork and beef ground up?

are organ parts vital? and is it OK to use olive oil? I am not finding the organs how many times a day do you feed? my dog was just diagnosed with diabetes, and kibble is just not healthy for him
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Dr K yes, organs are CRUCIAL! You cannot feed a raw diet without them. Check ethnic markets or online sources like Big Dan's or Raw Feeding Miami; might be more expensive, but they're vital. I mostly feed my dogs twice per day, occasionally they are fasted for a meal.

I have a question; do you have to freeze the raw meat before giving it to dogs? (to kill parasites and stuff) Or, can they handle it without it being frozen prior to feeding?
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 5 лет назад
If it’s wild caught, then yes it should be frozen for several weeks to kill parasites. In the US at least, anything you can buy from the store should be safe to feed right away (other than fresh, wild fish)

Awesome video! I am a new dog owner and I am going to take the puppy home soon. As I’m doing many research on almost every aspect of raising a dog, I am now very much convinced about the idea of raw food diet. It makes a lot of sense to me but I have a concern about sanitation - how do you keep the feeding area and the dog’s mouth sanitary after feeding raw? I’m worried about the contamination that may caused by the meat and the organ, for example they eat and then lick your hand or face. Please share some thoughts/ advices with me if you’re feeding a raw diet, thank you very much!!

Love this video going to take a look at those bowls my boy ( raw fed since 6 months old) is super picky if his egg touches his meat or the organ touches the other organ 🙄 I have the pickiest dog 🐶 ever!

So I have a 12lb Miniature Pinscher, he will be 2 years old in January (2021). He has been on kibble since he was 8 weeks. Right now he is on a allergy food trial prescription diet. We're not sure what he's allergic to, if its even food or enviromental allergy related. i've heard that most dogs that do have food allergies are allergic to the most common proteins such as chicken, beef, & lamb. Anyway, i'm new to the raw feeding and would like to start feeding my dog raw (hoping it will help with his skin.) i'm overwhelmed and not sure where to start. for a full balanced diet what would my dog need? my dog eats 1/2 cup twice a day on the kibble he is on now. so how do i portion everything if he eats twice a day? and is it ok to have him eat the same meats/organs twice a day everyday?

@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Mr Taylor yes, thats fairly normal. Chicken bones are generally the easiest to digest, necks and backs in particular are very soft. You might try feeding a little less bone too.

My dog is very finicky. I am trying different things. Perhaps a partial raw diet will work? I could do full raw, but that will take time since where the meat is from counts and finding what she will eat might also take time. Lol.
