Please check the description of that video, there's lots of helpful links and resources :)
I know this video is fairly long, but I hope it was helpful! I wanted to show my whole process and setup from start to finish, including the stuff I use. I tend to babble, sorry! 😅 One thing I didn't mention in this video is that this amount of food usually takes me 1-2 hours to prep. If you're just starting out it may take a lot longer, but you'll get faster with time! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask and I'll help as best as I can.

Hey I’m in your position now that you were a year ago. Do you have any advice? I read in multiple places that you want 80% meat 10% bone 10% organs. Is it ok to stick with chicken for the 80 percent meet and then chicken liver and chicken kidney for the organs or should I be switching up the animal I get the meet and organs from?
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад
You should have at least 3 different protein sources, and at least half of the diet from red meat. Variety and a good amount of red meat will help ensure your pup is eating a well balanced, nutritious diet! No one protein source is complete on its own. So for example, chicken, beef, and pork would work well 😊 I usually use chicken as a bone source since their bones are softer and more edible, then meat and organ from red meats

Thanks for the informative video. We buy as much food as possible in bulk, on sale or "date-expired". We butcher the meat products into a variety of serving-sized portions then place on cookie sheets (covered with plastic wrap) to freeze. Once the meat is frozen, then we place the product into appropriate sized baggies that are dated and labelled and placed into our large chest freezer. We keep an inventory of food supplies in a spreadsheet that shows the number and weight of each bagged item. The inventory is updated as we assemble a week's worth of meals for our three dogs. We have found that taken the time to butcher and separately freeze items saves a lot of time when we assemble meals (which we do on a weekly basis, and we're usually two weeks ahead in our meal prep. It takes about 35 to 40 minutes to assemble a week's worth of meals. I like those freezer containers you use but for us, that wouldn't work as their not large enough to hold meals for our two biggest dogs. We might give it a try for our smaller 12 pounder though. Similarly, we use charts for tracking feeding amounts in detail: weekly amounts of organ, meat, liver and bone. One decision we made early on when we started 6 years ago, was to calculate all amounts in metric. It was worth the learning curve to do this as it made the amounts so much easier to calculate and quite a lot easier to set up calculations in spreadsheets. I sure wish that there were more videos like yours six years ago. It would have made our "logistics" a lot easier. I think you are doing dog-owners a great service! Thank you.

One of the best examples of a raw diet ive seen from a youtuber in a long time. Only thing i would change is instead of chicken thigh id give leg quarters. Much more bone and excelpent calcium to meat ratio

Hi! I hope you are still taking comments and questions. I have a few questions. Your videos are very informative and have such great information. I have an 11 week old Akita puppy. I'm really eager to start him on his raw food diet. I'm a bit nervous as to how. I like the chart idea. How would I calculate what % of the weight of each item for him would I give, and how much a pound per day? And are boneless chicken breast or thighs ok for him to have every now and then?

I was wondering if you could clarify as I am new to Raw and want to start. Based on my dog he should have to eat a daily intake of 2 pounds of raw with 1.15 being muscle meat along with the other stuff. Considering I plan to feed my dog twice a day does that mean I am supposed to portion 1/2 of the 1.15 of muscle meat along with 1/2 of other items so to be able to do the twice a day feeding ? Thanks

Hi, thanks for the info! I have more fridge space than freezer space. How long do you think meat is ok in the fridge? A few days? Also, in your other video you said you give your dogs vegetables, but I don't think you show that or talk about how (sorry if I just missed it). Do you give them veg with meat or separately or not at all? Thank you!
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Stella Duplass if you keep your fridge very cold, maybe 5 days? Might take a little trial and error to see, as long as it smells ok it's good to feed! Veggies are something I've been meaning to talk about in a supplements/extra video, I've just been busy and haven't had a chance to film it yet. Basically I just feed them as a treat/extra. I don't necessarily feed them every single day, it just depends on what I have in the house.

I do on occasion, usually when I feed whole prey meals 😊 a rabbit for example is usually enough for 2-3 meals for my dogs, so if they eat a whole rabbit in one sitting I’ll fast the following day. I wouldn’t worry too much about it in the beginning though, definitely take a couple months to get your dog used to Raw before you introduce fasting 😊

Hey! I was wondering those meals you made are they a 1 meal you do for your dogs or do you spread meals over the day? If that makes sense... I remember you said in a previous video they have chicken for breakfast or something? Sorry, first time for me, doing my research :)
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Crystal Little no problem! I'm sorry haha, I don't think I made that clear in this video. Each container is a day's worth of food, I usually feed twice a day, so two meals 😊 and yes, usually I feed them bone in the morning (generally a chicken quarter or thigh) and the rest for dinner! You don't necessarily have to feed that way though; one of my dogs seems to digest bone better in the morning, for whatever reason. There a lot of trial and error to find out your dog's needs.

@theotherparker how much do you spend a week on average? It has been really expensive for me
@TheOtherParker

Average, probably about $25. It used to be much higher though; I have gotten better at finding good deals, I’ve made a few connections to free meat, and recently my town started a co-op that has great prices. I also have a lot more freezer space to stock up on cheap/free meat than when I first started

@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад

Is it ok to stick to one type of bone meat. Like just stick with chicken bones, but add beef or pork to their diet. I'm just nervous of letting my dog have cow bones or pork bones. Also can dogs have chicken legs for bones?
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Lindsey Maley yes, that's perfectly ok! As long as you use other proteins sources for meat and organ, that's totally fine. For the most part that's exactly what I do, raw chicken bones (including legs) are very soft, and usually the easiest to digest. Pig feet, ribs, and tails can work too. As for beef I'm totally blanking right now, I rarely feed beef bones. Oxtails are fairly soft, I'm sure there are others that would be ok, can't think of any off the top of my head.

I believe in one of your videos, you said that your dogs go back packing with you? We do overnight backpacking trips with our dog, and I was wondering if you had any tips on how we can pack meals for a raw fed pup. I have found freeze dried food, and that is my plan at the moment, but if you have any ideas or tips, they would be much appreciated! Thank you so much :)
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад
Yes we do! :) I usually keep some dehydrated or freeze fried food on hand in case of last minute trips. If I’m planning a trip in advance sometimes I dehydrate food for them! You can grind up the meat and organ if you have a grinder, or buy pre-ground meat and dehydrate thin slices of organ meat. You can dehydrate chicken feet for bone, or mix a calcium supplement/dried bone meal into the meat.
@vidamueller6527
@vidamueller6527 6 лет назад
The Other Parker interesting! Thank you for sharing. Would definitely watch a video if you made one! I would be interested to see how you plan the amount when it is dehydrated and freeze dried food, especially for the increased activity. Cinder (our pup) carries a light backpack, and we hike through hilly terrain, so definitely would want to make sure she is getting all the calories she needs!
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад
Haha, I’ve been meaning to do a video on dehydrating at some point 😅 but I’ve kept pushing it off; I’m traveling quite a bit these next few months, so it’ll probably be awhile before I do one! My pups carry packs too! I usually just kind of estimate what to bring haha, more less the way I do for myself. If it’s a short trip, or easy terrain I don’t bring much more than their standard amount of food. I think the most I’ve ever brought is close to twice their usual caloric requirement, but that’s rare. I do highly recommend bringing a fat supplement! Dehydrated and freeze died foods are generally pretty low fat, and a dog’s preferred energy source while working hard is fat. Salmon oil or lard works, though they can be messy. Coconut oil packets or olive oil work too!

Hi Parker, I have a 4 month old puppy at 26 lbs. I am just starting to feed him raw. How did you figure out the ratio 80/10/10? per meal. Thank you
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 5 лет назад
It’s just simple math; so at 4 months old you feed 7% of their body weight, which for your pup would be 1.8 lbs 80% of that is meat (.8 x 1.8 = 1.44 lbs) 5% liver + 5% other organ (.05 x 1.8 = .09 lbs of each) 10% bone (.1 x 1.8 = .18 lb)

How did you figure out all the amounts for your dogs? I have a 25lb dog and an 80lb dog (he probably could lose 5-10 lbs he's a lab Rhodesian pit mix). I'm unsure on how to figure out the right amounts.
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Jancilyn Pettitt the usual recommendation is 2-3% of their ideal body weight. So for your 25 lb dog that would be 8 to 12 ounces per day, and 1.4 to 2.1 lbs per day for the larger dog 😊 it tools same trial and error to figure out the right amount, I usually start on the lower end and increase as needed

could you a video on how to feed pups a raw food diet? or does it not differ that much in nutrition
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад
+Lauren Turner it doesn't differ much really; the only difference is you'll feed more (3-4 times a day, 2-3% of expected adult weight) and you'll want each day's worth of food to be fully balanced. Adult dogs can balance their diet over the course of a week, but since puppies are growing so rapidly it's a good idea to feed them fully balanced meals daily. Puppies also don't need to transition slowly like adults. Hope that helps 😊

The Other Parker how do you feed the puppy if you're going to be at work if they need to eat 3 to 4 times a day ?
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад
+Prince Williams have a neighbor or family member drop in to feed them, leave work for lunch if possible, or worst case scenario hire a pet sitter/dog walker to come in. In addition to extra feedings, puppies can't hold their bladder or bowel movements like adult dogs, so they'll need to be let out to potty at least once, if not twice, over the course of a work day.

Anyone feed whole day old Chicks? I have snakes too that eat them. I feed them Frozen solid, so my dog has to work harder. He's eaten them frozen for years, no problems. Why do you thaw everytime?

Also if you give your dogs raw eggs, how many a day should they get?

I’ve read 2 or 3 per week as too much egg can cause diarrhea

WAY WAY TOO MUCH WORK! I literally do not have time for all this. Is there are dog food that is already prepare with all of this in it? I have a small 7 lb white toy poodle.

Yes, of course! However, they’re a lot more expensive. I’m not super familiar with complete mixes since I’ve never fed them, but off the top of my head I know Reel Raw and Raw Feeding Miami sell them online. I have seen a few brands in holistic pet stores as well; Stella and Chewys, Vital Essentials, Primal, Blue Ridge Beef, and Natures Variety. I’m sure there are others as well. Another option would be to buy the Base Mix from the Honest Kitchen, all you do is add meat.

Thanks for the videos! We don't have a dog yet, but we're looking for one so I'm researching raw now. I'm curious to know how much you spend on these 20 meals for both dogs? We're looking at getting a Grate Dane and from what I've found he/she will need about 2.5 pounds of food per day. I've found some raw food co-ops in my area and am finding their pre-made food is about $3.50/lb. What about Tripe, do you feed tripe? I hear it's a great thing.
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 7 лет назад
+Kristin Stauffer it varies quite a bit, anywhere from $20-70! I used to spend a lot more, but with time I've gotten better at finding good deals, made friends with some hunters and home farms, and expanded my freezer space to stock up on cheap/free meat. Danes definitely eat a lot haha, but $3.50/lb is a good deal for premade food! I do feed green tripe. The dogs go nuts for it, but be warned it STINKS lol.

It’s not bad once you find your system; dogs with chronic health problems related to improper diet are a lot of work too :)

Learning all of this and wanting to feed my dogs (two boxers and boy and a girl) they are active and relitivly normal sized but my girl just had puppies for the third time and shes having a really hard time gaining weight back and I have a cheap cheap cheeeeaaap mother and I am below the age of getting a job in my town and my dogs seem just with their age I want then to have more energy and a better diet besides damn kibble its horrible

+random soul awww poor girl, raising pups is hard on mamas! I have no experience with any of that, but you might try looking up recipes for satin balls, they'd help maintain her weight. There are some raw versions floating around.

I never knew it was safe to feed raw pork ,I thought dogs would get worms from pork
@TheOtherParker
@TheOtherParker 6 лет назад
Nope, not in the US at least! 😊 You do need to be careful with wild caught fish, but even then if you freeze it for several weeks it’s safe to feed

With dogs you don’t have to be that specific. I have been feeding my 4 dogs with raw food and l don’t spend a quarter of her time doing it. I just put a little bit of everything (raw food) and mix it with kibble and all my dogs (great dane, saint Bernard, Komondor and a Yorkshire) look beautiful in every aspect. When you become too specific with them, their system becomes specific as well. At the end, they are animals and they have been living for thousands and thousands of years without any specifications.

To each their own, much like you I’ve been feeding my dogs this way for years and they’re all in impeccable health :) If you’re mixing your Raw with kibble, it’s true you don’t have to be as careful. Kibble contains added minerals and vitamins that are likely meeting any nutritional deficiencies present in the diet.

A raw diet and kibble digest differently. I’d suggest not mixing them. But that’s just a suggestion. 👍

+Brenda J you may be feeding too much at one time. Try feeding a small amount daily, and offer organ meat with bone dense items like chicken feet or necks
