As part of the members only Screen Epiphanies strand, Ray Harryhausen remembers his first experience of King Kong - a screening at Mann's Chinese Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in 1933. Harryhausen describes how going to see a film in the cinema on a Saturday night was a special event at the time, marked by ceremony and circumstance. King Kong was the first movie that involved animation with a non-drawn character, and the stop motion it encorporated, and which became Harryhausen's signature technique, was something unheard of at the time. With gossip concerning the technical effects in the film filling the newspapers of the day, it proved a watershed moment in Harryhausen's life and ultimately his career.

Love Ray and Kong. The description above contains at least a couple of errors. It wasn't Mann's theater but it was Graumann's Chinese Theater where Harryhausen first saw Kong. And Kong was not the first movie to use stop motion animation. O'Brien had used it as far back as 1925 in The Lost Worid.

No offense intended to the interviewer, but every time he spoke I just wish that he wouldn't have. Hearing Ray is like hearing pure history and talent. So much genius exudes out of him, you never really want to hear him stop talking. I wish I'd been able to work with him.

Did not know that the big head was operated via compressed air. I was under the impression that they used levers manipulated by stagehands.
