the cost of him turning down Georgia was big. Banned from the whole state. not just professionally but personally. can't eat, can't sleep, can't do nothing in Georgia. and here's the kicker, HE"S FROM GEORGIA

From Wikipedia: “In the scene in which Charles is about to enter a segregated music hall in Augusta, Georgia, in 1961, a group of civil rights activists protesting just outside the hall successfully persuade him not to perform; Charles then declares that he will no longer perform in segregated public facilities and in response, the Georgia state legislature passes a resolution banning Charles from ever performing again in the state. In reality, a group of civil rights activists did successfully persuade Charles to reject this invitation, but the advice came in the form of a telegram rather than a street protest;[14] Charles also did make up for the gig later, and was never banned from performing in Georgia and still accepted invitations to perform at segregated public facilities.[14]”

@@silverdrumvideo Movies are not the way to truly learn history but the often perform that function for many lacking time, energy, or the background to desire to do so and it would be nice if the did a little fact checking about things involving whole states. Sad...

I can't believe that this movie was made in 2004, I thought that it was made in 2018 or something, the quality is wonderful along with the editing! What a wonderful movie and an amazing director! Ray Charles was such a wonderful character!

This scene is actually historically inaccurate. Charles wasn't banned from the state of Georgia when he canceled this concert, though he did have to pay $800 to compensate the promoter.

Don’t believe everything that you see in the movies. This incident never actually happened the way it’s portrayed in this scene. Partly incorrect. Ray was not banned from playing in Georgia but refused to play in Georgia for many years due to segregation. He never made up the concert ,that is false. He paid 757 dollars in compensation from a court ruling for not playing due to segregation. In 1979 Georgia issues a state apology to Ray in person for the ruling and he became the first person to be born in Georgia inducted into the Georgia state music hall of fame. His song Georgia on my mind also became the states song that same date.

I am white and wasn't born at that time, but I am very embarrassed for the crimes the white people committed all over the world, thinking they're superiour and better than anybody else. That's so shameful and ridiculous! I love Ray Charles even more for his refusal to perform infront of an segregated audience! What a great guy he was! ❤🙏
