Well, here it is. The final chapter of this series covers everything from 2005 through the Rays shocking World Series run in 2008. The good, bad, and ugly of these years of Tampa baseball are as prominent as ever, but everything came together perfectly by the 2008 season.
The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the most successful teams in the American League since 2008 in terms of record, and although they have not yet won a title, their competitiveness in a tough AL East has been extremely impressive because they do so with a payroll that's constantly near the bottom of the league. Despite this recent success, their first decade of existence was one of the worst stretches of any franchise in the history of baseball. Before they became the Rays, they were the Devil Rays.

I actually didn't know about them until Stark Raving Sports used one in a video of theirs. I think they're the perfect representation of pre-social media internet branding, it's got such a mid-2000s feel to it and shows off the team's personality.

You really need to continue this series. The second decade for the Rays was moneyball perfected. You also have crazy stories like game 162, how the Rays fell in love with reclamation projects, how they could turn decent journeymen like Fernando Rodney into Cy Young candidates, and why nobody should ever trade for a Rays pitcher (if the Rays are willing to trade a pitcher away there is something wrong with said pitcher and you will need to give up your entire farm system).
@AndThatsBaseball
@AndThatsBaseball Год назад
I can’t talk about that cuz then I’d have to talk about how the rays have won more pennants since 09 than the Yankees with maybe 25% of the payroll

They finally become a great team through the end of the 2000s and pretty much all of the 2010s, yet what lets them down? Not just the owner but the goddamn stadium! Will Tampa EVER get a break? Great series ATB, this and the Angels video is how I found you!
@ESmith
@ESmith 11 месяцев назад
The stadium isnt as bad as people make it. Is it beautiful? No. Is it flashy? No. But there's not a bad view in the place and the food options are amazing. Its cool and the product on the field is entertaining. They need a new one, for sure. But it's a common thread among people who's never been there to shit on the place. If they wanted, they could easily update it with minimal effort to modernize and give more fan experience.

I remember being at that Twins game when Rocco Baldelli hit a grand slam (at 0:55 in video). July 22, 2004. Only reason I remember it is because the Twins also hit a grand slam in the inning before. Two grand slams in a game is pretty rare.

@dlindberg3

@@AndThatsBaseball It wasn't too good when the Twins hit the grand slam in the seventh, but then the Rays responded with a grand slam of their own (Baldelli) in the eighth to tie it, so I legitimately thought they could win! But they ended up losing by 2 runs I think. Still my favorite memory of my summer in Minnesota that year! Thanks for sharing this video!

The name change feels like it lifted everything bad about the team. Their best season before the name change was 70-91 in 2004 where that was the only time they finished with at least 70 wins and not finishing last in the AL East, didn’t have a single winning season. Ever since the name change in 2008 they’ve had 12 winning seasons, 2 World Series appearances, a 100-win season (2021), 4 division titles, and 9 playoff appearances. They’ve only had one 90-loss season since the name change in 2016 where they lost 94 games and even in that 6 year playoff drought they even had a couple seasons where they won 80 games. This stretch of success where they’re making the playoffs every year is the best they’ve ever done and I expect them to still be a perennial playoff team for the next 5 years and maybe they’ll win a championship someday, they’re a good enough team to get it done.

"Fry'd-man"? I am a Rays fan (grew up in FL) but I wasn't following baseball as closely in 2008 when 'lo and behold I found myself living near Philadelphia that year... I don't think I need to conclude that thought.

I know it’s typically pronounced ‘freedman’ but I’ve heard baseball people say it that way before. Very well could be wrong but that’s my rationale. I hope you liked the video overall, though!

Just think of how much better the Rays could have been if ownership didn't cheap out on the roster every year. If they had put some money into the roster the Rays could have won a World Series like the Diamondbacks did.
@cjallday1130plays
@cjallday1130plays 6 месяцев назад
i would agree. the sad thing is, as a fan of the Rays, the only time i'll believe they'll make it, when they win it, which is a highly improbable thing since pitching staff and defense need a LOT of work.

I know that’s the standard pronunciation but I’ve definitely heard it the other way before. Very possible the people I’ve heard it from (prob MLBNetwork or other RU-vidrs) have mispronounced it before, though.
