Hi Retro, you commented on my comment on Rox solids video but I wanted to comment on yours so it is better for you. Yeah, I saw your video already before and in my opinion it is by far the BEST! Almost everyone is comparing the HD retrovision cables to crappy composite and once in awhile crap S Video. You are the first I have seen to do the comparison with quality S Video cables and yeah it is so hard to tell the difference. There are things I liked about both cables. On my Snes, The HD Retrovsion cables bring more color detail and less bleed but it adds stupid Jailbars. The Purple Monster S Video cable has no jailbars and blacks are darker. The HD Retrovision cables black screen isn't as black as the S Video.

Gametourny 4ever Thank you so much for the feedback. I'm glad you found the video informative and definitely agree that the biggest benefit to YPbPr comes in the color and quality S-video cables are very close.

Just wanted to tell you that your channel is amazing. The production quality you put into your videos is refreshing yet disappointing because you clearly don't have enough subscribers to this channel. I found my way here through the youtube sidebar, somehow, and I'm glad I did. I have a question I'd like to ask. Have you tried the retrovision cable on a PS2 and if so then how did it perform on your system? I gave the retrovision website a quick glance and it seems that they are coming out with a specific PS2 cable due to DVD playback problems. But surely the cable outputs regular games perfectly no? And while I'm at it, do you have any experience with the "high quality" component cable for the Sony systems like the official Sony component cable or the Psyclone component cable? These are generally recommended as the top tier cables due to the high quality wiring and shielding that they have. I recently won an ebay auction for a PS2 Psyclone component cable so I'm curious to get any input as to how the retrovision cables stack up to these old high quality cables.

So I currently use a Scart to hdmi cable for ps1 which looks amazing but requires an extra box which I own. Is this better would you say? Surely more easy to get up and go .
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
I would say more convenient than "better". You might shave a little lag off of your setup, depending on your TV. If it has a fast "game mode" through component, this should get you pretty close to lag free without any loss in quality.

Do you know how this Component adapter compares to the HDMI Pound cable? From my understanding they both tap into the PS1 native RGB signal. Price is a big difference.

I don't own a Pound Playstation cable but I haven't heard great things. Incorrect brightness levels, 16:9 apect ratio, and a lack of 480p support are all common complaints. Adam Koralik includes a fair amount of footage in this video, if you're interested - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZZ_Fnu2sDdI.html

Love your vids. I have a question, given the choice, would you connect and play a PS1 via component on a CRT that has component connection, or would you play it on a HDTV?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
I would say a high end consumer CRT or PVM/BVM would be the purest experience. You also wouldn't have to deal with signal drop out when the PS1 switches between 480i and 240p - which is common. That being said, there's something very convenient about having all (most) of my consoles hooked up to a single digital display.

No current QD-OLED(best Tech on the market) can compete with CRT motion clarity. The latter has zero motion blur, where as OLED at it's worst has a 16ms motion persistence....Motion blur is the name of the game unfortunately, but you can use Black frame insertion, which cuts it down by 50% but then you lose quite a bit of brightness, there's noticeable flickering on whites and input lag triples. It's such a frustrating technology if you value motion. Plus with CRT you don't have to deal with SD resolution being upscaled to 4K, aside from perfect motion clarity, flawless latency, the fact you'll probably only be spending around $50 to get one and they provide that retro authentic experience. Best to hop on Market place and find a good Sony CRT that has the least amount of hours thrown into it from the mid 2000's, like the Sony wega trinitron series, if you can stomach the silver fat bezel. :P But if you don't Want a bulky CRT, the next best thing would be something like a 32" Samsung QD-OLED G8 Monitor, which will be coming out in the next 1-2 months. 32"(or 31.5") i think translates to about 27" 4:3, which imo, is the perfect size for 8-16 bit consoles, including the Saturn, PS1 & N64. Once you get to Dreamcast, Gamecube, Wii, PS2 & XBOX, It's much better to go for a 32" 4:3 CRT, OR a 42" OLED, like the LG C3 or upcoming Samsung S90D coming this year. Neither the 42" C3 or S90D are QD-OLED, they're regular WOLED unfortunately. So colours will not be up to snuff.

HD Retrovision has their shop down for the moment to focus on R&D for new products. I highly recommend going to Castlemania Games as a source for HDR products. For this setup, you'll need to pair the PS1 Adapter - castlemaniagames.com/shop?olsPage=products%2Fhd-retrovision-playstation-av-port-adapter with the Sega Genesis YPbPr Cable - castlemaniagames.com/shop?olsPage=products%2Fhd-retrovision-genesis-ypbpr For the record, I don't get any kickback for recommending Castlemania, I've just had solid shopping experiences with them and the owner is awesome.

None whatsoever introduced by The cables. Especially if you're running straight into a CRT. With newer displays, it's important to get the right scaler and and TV/projector to ensure that input lag is not introduced by those devices.

Retro Tech Select - will I get a checkored pattern when playing the PS1 on my LCD HD TV via Component cables? How did you get your footage as it doesn't have the checkored pattern?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 4 года назад
HD Retrovision products don't add any artifacts like jail bars or checkerboarding, but other devices in a setup might introduce them. Keep in mind that PS1 games sometimes employed fullscreen dithering as a way to create the illusion of extra detail. There's not a lot that can be done about dithering originating at the source, other than applying smoothing filters with devices like the RetroTINK 2X or playing on a CRT.
@Gaming.Vids1
@Gaming.Vids1 4 года назад
@@RetroTechSelect Gran Turismo 1 for example when I connect it to my LCD HDTV via RGB SCART has a checkored pattern all over the screen. This never appeared on a CRT TV. Any chance you could test the component cable with this game? The PS3 has this pattern as well via HDMI or Official component cable unless Smoothing is enabled. Just curious if the RetroTINK 2x will get rid of that pattern as I thought it just smoothes jaggies like pixels and jaggy lines?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 4 года назад
Component definitely reveals all a picture's secrets on an LCD. I'm happy to do some testing with the 2X for you to see if the smoothing filter helps to eliminate the PS1's full screen dithering effect.
@Gaming.Vids1
@Gaming.Vids1 4 года назад
@@RetroTechSelect Please do that with Gran Turismo 1. I'm also curious to see if when using line doubling on the 2x, does the Gran Turismo 1 starting screen where you see the big Gran Turismo logo - is the logo all pixellated like when the PS3 upscales to 480p?

- I have both the old blue Monster PS2 S-Video and PS2 Component video cables. On PS2 Component video through Retrotink 5X, the image has equal sharpness with S-video. But even with generic component cable, the colour saturation is much better and images seem less smeared on the edgesq than the Monster PS2 s-video. - But I still prefer s-video for watching DVDs with PS2, as the colours do not seem oversaturated and the blacks are deeper to my eyes than with using component video. - With SNES-001, using the purple Monster SNES (N64 and Gamecube) s-video cable through Retrotink 2X Classic, I found the image looked sharper, with better black levels than the HD Retro component video cables. The latter had better colour saturation, but it was noticeably more blurry. Then again, with SNES and using any S-video cable theough RT 2X, I noticed strange, diagonal lines of interference, esp. near the bottom of the screen. I did not notice this as much when using component video cable piped through the same equipment. - Through Retrotink 5X, however, the image through SNES HD Retro component cables appeared to me to be much better, with better colour saturation, cleaner picture, less jailbars. Even than with the high performance Monster S-video cable. I'm not an expert, but maybe because component video is capable of passing up to 1080i and 1080p (like first gen HDMI) and S video (and composite video) is limited to 480i. Thus, with the 1080P upscaling of the Retrotink 5x, perhaps component would look inherently better than S-video. With N64 through Retrotink 5X and the purple Monster S-video cable, I did not perceive much difference than with the Insurection Industries S-video cable using the same setup. However, the Monster cable seems to have much sturdier construction than the Insurection cable. I accidentally bent one of the pins on the Insurection s-video cable, but I have never bent a pin on the Monster cable, which I have had about twenty years. I have also heard of people complaining about "checkerboarding" on the Insurection Industries s video cable, but not on the Monster cable which might be better shielded and has nitrogen in the dielectric for precise 75 ohm signal. Another usless blurb about the ins and outs of video game cabling...

I always recommend starting with S-video, SCART, or YPbPr cables from your Playstation. From there, I use a RetroTink 2X to line-double the output - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L9fNL-FGbkk.html If you're really going for a tube-TV look, you might try using an upscaler that can create artificial scanlines to mimic the picture you'd get from a CRT... something like the OSSC. I hope this helps! Let me know if I missed something or you have additional questions.

For some reason I prefer the smudged look of composite in 3D scenes. Maybe nostalgia. Kinda hides the flaws better. Maybe I'll go with component anyway and just rub a tub of petroleum jelly in my eyes before playing.
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 3 года назад
Haha I get where you're coming from to some extent. Using a RetroTINK 2X with a smoothing filter, you can almost capture the smooth look of composite without all of the pitfalls that come with it.
@NeonPizzas
@NeonPizzas 5 месяцев назад
I've never seen PS1 running off either S-Video or Component on a CRT, so i can't say first hand. But i have compared Composite to S-video with SNES, and i actually prefer Composite. Aside from being nostalgic, Composite smoothens and rounds out the sprites giving the characters and environments a more pleasing cartoonier aesthetic. When it comes to 8-16 bit sprites, sharper, imo, doesn't mean better. I actually prefer an RF signal on CRT, vs composite with NES too! But with SNES & Genny, it's composite all the way. But once you get to Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, XBOX & Wii(for ex), it's gotta be component on a 32" Sony trinitron CRT
