RC Scratch Building - Fiberglass Fuselage Framing

In this video I cover the process for completing the hollow fiberglass fuselage I made in the last video. This covers building the necessary internal structure and mount plates for the gear and wings.
A separate video will cover wing construction, final setup, and hopefully a successful maiden flight.

after so MANY years as an RC modeler its nice to see that still out there are GENUINE SCRATCH BUILDERS.In a few weeks ill be turning 50 and back those days when started as modeler(had 10 years) ALMOST EVERYTHING was from SCRATCH OR with a set of plans and a pile of wood!!! got nothing against ARF, By the way I got some ARF in my fleet. But NOTHING compares to the JOY,PROUD AND SATISFACTION of BUILDING and FLYING a SCRATCH BUILD MODEL.Good Luck.ENJOY IT!

+Jose Munoz Thanks for the really kind words. There are still a few of us around who love to build from scratch. Honestly I'm hoping that the methods like these capture the attention of the younger generation. There is already a thriving "maker" community building all sorts of stuff. I'm hoping some of them get excited about RC scratch building :-)

Absolutely amazing build. I'm sitting here plowing away at Guillow's 500 and 900 series, and im green with envy after watching your build! I only wish I could attain that precision with these kits. Good job!

I’d like to ask a question as someone new to RC,. I love the build, almost more than the flying... Does this method of build result in less total damage during a “test of gravity” ? Thinking more along the line of a loss of control resulting in a hard landing, maybe even a cartwheel with a twist, versus the nose in the ground “pile driver” imitation.

So unfortunately it isn't as easy to repair as a foamy, or even perhaps a traditional balsa bird. So much of the strength is in the skin that a significant fold or crack can be difficult (but not impossible) to fix. On the plus side though, you still have the male mold and can always pull another fuse or part with "minimal" effort compared to starting from scratch. That way even a total loss can be rebuilt relatively quickly compared to the original model. Welcome to RC! Kiss your $$, your free time, and your sanity goodbye ;-)

He did his fuse the same way with amazing results: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?1200180-Design-and-Building-of-a-160-C130 My next big build this fall will be using the same technique for the fuselage. That really depends TBH. If you have a model you know you're going to want more than one of then that is a good consideration. Something without too many complex curves would be the best place to start, and definitely pick a subject you're passionate about and won't lose interest in :-)

I'm flattered! I'm happy to help with suggestions and tips (for free of course), but at this point I don't have the time to take on more projects. I've got a big build ramping up, lots of little things to fix, and a 2 year old as well. Do you have a build thread on the F-18 going on any of the forums? That is a BIG hornet!
