The wooden roller coaster is probably the best looking coaster type in the game and it's also pretty damn good. In this video we take a look at all the ins and outs of the wooden coaster.

Some of us are naturally in the habit of charging low as well due to RCT1 having a mix of ride and park entrance fees, so if you adjusted based on feedback that prices were cheap or too expensive, you'd naturally settle into that bracket possibly without even knowing you could go higher on rides of entry was free.

These days, I almost exclusively make block-braked coasters. It takes ages to optimise, but it's so satisfying to see the timing get to the point where a train arrives every time one leaves, and trains never stop on the layout. I've found separate exit stations really help with this. Also it's fun watching all the trains cascade and stop in the middle when the ride breaks down; That's another thing you have to account for - every block has to accommodate an empty train starting there from a standstill. I just wish block brakes could have a custom speed. Now that we have the new save format, hopefully it comes soon!
@sabretooth1997

Agree. I try to get realistic layouts and sometimes get burned in scenarios for it, but whatever.
@scottthewaterwarrior

Sloped to flat chainlift pieces also count as block sections. I often add a single chainlift piece to the top of the second or third drop as a "checkpoint." The goal is to never actually have trains stop at these (have to make sure you put the right minimum waiting time) but they allow you to run more trains closer together.

When i got to Katie's Dreamland in Classic you bet your ass that I took that poster-child for Station Brakes Failure crashes and gave it the Block Brake treatment. My proudest moment of converting a starting coaster to Block Brakes was Double Trouble from Crumbly Woods, when I rebuilt the thing I split the entry and exit station up and added 2 trains.

Fun fact: Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 had two separate types of wooden rollercoasters. 1: The basic "Wooden Coaster" had either standard 4 seater cars, or 4 seater reversed (Both with max 7 cars), and had access to the vertical loop and water splash 2: The "Wooden Twister Coaster" is the one with articulated trains (Max 10 cars) that came out in the Added Attractions expansion pack, which had access to steep turns and spirals unlike the basic wooden coaster. In Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, these two were combined into one, with the color schemes of the Wooden Twister.

I like having a long "Dipper" style wooden coaster on the edge of the park that spans the length while just being a few tiles wide due to the steep tilted turn on the way back, adding the loop and splash makes for a good looking coaster that takes up a lot of space but only the few tiles on the edge which aren't as important.

Speaking of the reversed trains, there’s another (pair of) roller coaster(s) at Kings Island called the Racer, which is a mirrored pair. For a good while, they ran one with forward-facing cars and one with rear-facing cars. I think they are now both forward-facing now but it was lot of fun to ride. Kings Island’s Beast itself is, of course, the Mac Daddy of wooden roller coasters. It’s also the namesake of Son of Beast, and if you’re only passingly familiar with it that ride’s history, it’s well worth reading about-it’s a hell of a story.

I'd spend so much time just moving a pre-built track ghost all around the park in all the little cracks and crevices until you find that one spot. That one specific little area that it was able to just barely fit and squeeze into was such an awesome dopamine hit. God, it was just so much fun.

The wooden coaster is the only coaster to date I have managed to give a extreme exitement rating. Without any "cheat" builds, I built it as a syncronised coaster with pre built "the storm". Best coaster I have ever made

I love the wooden coaster. I always wait until I'm around halfway through a scenario, when my park is built up, my loan is paid off, and I have plenty of cash to throw around. Then it's time for an elaborate wooden coaster design.

In my view on the Wooden coaster. The awesome looking supports and structure are both it's best and worst feature. It occupies a lot of visual space. This is good because it's pretty. It's also bad because it distracts from other pretty stuff and blocks other pretty stuff. One of my favorite things to do is to have a nice weaving section to rail through super fast boosting average speed, followed by some bunny hops. I especially like ones that use two hills like The Beast in order to boost the length to a nice full 5 minute maximum. With proper design you can make amazing excitement stats, and look good doing it. For more compact designs the loop is great for driving up the excitement rating when you don't have enough room for the hill count necessary to get great stats otherwise.

Finally, the classic. It's funny because you show the Blackpool Pleasure Beach scenario where they have some tiny wooden coasters that have awful stats and with some very minor changes can be quadrupled in stats
@reillywalker195
@reillywalker195 2 года назад
It's just the one that has awful stats in RCT1: Zipper Dipper, now known in real life as Blue Flyer. Grand National in RCT1 has exactly 9.99 intensity, so it narrowly avoids getting penalized.
@reval1989
@reval1989 2 года назад
@@reillywalker195 There's also Vikingar which has 1.18 excitement but there's plenty of space underneath The Grand National where you can expand it and fix that issue
@reillywalker195
@reillywalker195 2 года назад
@@reval1989 Vikingar has high intensity in RCT1, though, which helps to mitigate its low excitement. That said, replacing it with a River Ride is a good idea.

@@MarcelVos I must be mistaken then, I know there was something about the turns on the wooden roller coaster that bothered me though. It's been a while since I've played. @@MarcelVos Perhaps it was the lack of an ability to go from a banked turn to a banked-incline without going level first?

I rode the Son of the Beast at King's Island. Going into the loop makes your neck snap back pretty hard and they adjusted it multiple times to try to reduce there whiplash, before giving up and closing it indefinitely.
@rmac3217
@rmac3217 Год назад
They made the loop too circular then. There’s something to do with forward momentum that does better in an upside down water drop shape, when you’d think it would be opposite. They figured that out with the first looping ‘coasters’ which were weird looking 1 seater carts hauled up to one height with horses, then there’d be an incline on the other side as well.

Wooden coasters are near to my heart. My first "real" coaster (I.E. not one of the little kiddy ones you see at carnivals) was the Giant Dipper at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. It instilled in me a love of coasters and even over 100 years later, it's a timeless classic.
@sk8rdman
@sk8rdman Год назад
I rode Son of Beast at King's Island back when it still had the loop, and it was a terrible experience. Wooden coasters are generally a rough ride, but that one I remember being particularly bad. The loop itself (which was made of steel) was the only smooth part of the ride. They eventually removed the loop, and a few years later tore the whole thing down, and replaced it with a steel hanging coaster called Banshee.
