Re-Grow multiple ONIONS from a LEFTOVER piece of ONION

In this episode I show you how to grow ONIONS from a left over ONION or cut off piece that has the roots still attached. Be sure to have the onion slice about 1-1.5" thick to begin with minimum. Once it grows, each onion will produce multiple onions so you always end up with more onions than you started from. If you had to you could never buy another onion again and grow them indefinitely forever if you were in a survival situation or just want your own homegrown organic onions. We all have looked in our fridge once before and left an onion too long and it begins to grow stems out the top, This is perfect time to try to plant this in the ground. You can also eat the leaves of the onion and clop them up once the grow.

separate the joint onion plants after it's 1st introduction to soil. It will help them grow bigger in size.

Great video. I planted a red onion end in January indoors. It’s growing really well. I showed a picture of it on an allotment page & got very negative comments about how it won’t really grow an onion bulb? But I think they’re wrong, I’ve seen lots of videos & pictures online where it’s been done successfully. I’m going to persevere, your video has inspired me to carry on x

Yes great just plant as many as you can. They are all for free it can't hurt. You can also by pass the rooting process and just plant them directly in the soil. I am glad I inspired you to carry on with it. Good luck! Let me know how it turns out.

Even if it doesn't grow a bulb you can always use the onion and garlic greens anyway ;)

I saw some comments on another video saying they have split them before planting. With your video, I can now see that each section with its own small full circle, will be a separate stalk so if we split there and give each section some of the roots, that might work. Also wondering if one can save a step and go right into very most soil, or if it needs to be in water to establish new roots. With Basil I used to start the cuttings in water but now thinking go right into very moist soil. Cool... you got some extra onions for a meal instead of just scraps!
@GrowingOrganicTvShow
@GrowingOrganicTvShow 2 года назад
Definitely just plant it right in the soil and it will grow even faster sometimes. I am making another video showing that. I haven't tried splitting them but not bad idea.
@GeoThaDude

I agree with the idea of splitting them, because then each new onion has its own root system rather than like the red onions where you have 4 new onions sharing the same root structure that used to feed 1 onion.

That’s pretty cool, I grew some yellow onions from a couple of old onions I had laying around. They actually started sprouting tops from just sitting for about a month. They got very long stems so I just threw them in a pot and they grew about 5 or 6 bulbs from one bulb. I felt very accomplished after eating my onions after

Sometimes I wonder if large commercial chain growers spray growth retardant on their produce to prevent people from regrowing the produce. That might explain why the onions grew such small bulbs.

You are probably right. I would not be surprised if that is the case.

Yeah watching lots of video and researching it, when he put them in the ground ,after the greens grew and the onion decomposed he then should have dug it up and separated each bulb and then replanted them , and they would have grown bigger.
@alexanderleehr6167
@alexanderleehr6167 Год назад
Yes indeed some commercial farm crops are given growth regulators to help with controlling harvests to avoid excess materials and loss in profits. However the red onion, as wel as the white onions, needed to be split to allow individual root systems instead of 2 plants using 1. If they were split they would have both been a bit bigger.

definitely needed to split them...a little while after the green shoots get really establised...or maybe can even do at the outset with each of the circle areas that were sprouting...I have been trying to get info somewhere regarding when is the best time to split.
@GrowingOrganicTvShow
@GrowingOrganicTvShow 2 года назад
Oh interesting. That might be be a good idea to split them
@alexanderleehr6167
@alexanderleehr6167 Год назад
I have JUST gotten into growing my own veg and I just tried the split method roughly 5 weeks ago for the first time ever and so far it seems to be working pretty well. I saw a video, but cant remember where, and it said to split them a little while after the shoots start to split. I waited until the shoots were about 2.5 to 3 inches tall, then I peeled away the layers until I got down to the shoots layer and transplanted them straight into the garden. Its worth mentioning that they didn't even have a root system yet and idk if that is going to affect the end result but I carefully dug one up a week ago, after their shoots had grown to and it was beginning to form a bulb and had a good root system. Hope this is helpful.

I just enjoy watching things grow. I have two white onion cuttings growing right now near my green onion patch. All from cuttings. Plan to plant my purple onion once I cut it. I'm using half a whiskey barrel and it seems the perfect size for my onion patch. I have tried this with celery but it rotted. Thanks for your video!

Hi thanks for this informative video! How can I prepare soil for regrowing onions, garlic, etc. You mentioned your soil already having "organic material"? I'm a first time gardener, you might say.🙂🌱 Thank you!
@GrowingOrganicTvShow
@GrowingOrganicTvShow Год назад
Thanks, I would start by adding a bunch of compost to increase organic matter, add some worm castings, and some fertilizer for veggies. That should do the trick.

Quick question, do you need to place it in water first to grow? Or can you plop it down in dirt and have the same effect?
@GrowingOrganicTvShow

You can also just plant directly in the ground and it will grow as well. Good question.
@sarahaccardi

Pretty sure you gotta seperate them before they mature. So they can take up more nutrients. If they are too close like that they compete for the nutrients and stay small.

How many separate plants can you grow from a single onion bulb? I've seen videos of people cutting up an onion into quarters or even eighths and each cut piece grows into a separate plant? What's the minimum piece for an onion slice to be viable?
