Love your videos Jake. Could you do one sometimes where you talk through the process e.g. why the frog needs to be trimmed, how you know how much sole to remove etc. Find it SO fascinating and satisfying to watch.

For me, this is another illustration that shows the genius behind mother nature. Regardless of the animal, the design of the hoof, leg, shoulder etc. is a masterpiece with a purpose. What amazes me even more is the incredible talents that humans have developed to aid in the care of these animals. I am a believer that these animals know exactly what is happening and show patience when being helped. I also believe that there are some " grumpy old man" types out there who just don't like being touched at all and will kick your a** if you touch them! 😁👍

Question: What is the purpose of burning the hoof with the shoe before attaching (nailing in place)?
@tompotter8703
@tompotter8703 2 года назад
The process is called “Hot shoeing”. It’s generally done to seal moisture (preventing drying out or softening depending on the environment) and kills bacteria.

Just curious - after nailing the shoe in place, you use the prongs on the back of the hammer, to cut off the tip of each nail. Do those get swept up or picked up, after the whole shoeing session is finished? After watching a whole lot of cattle hoof trimming videos, I am amazed at the weird stuff that can get into a cow’s hoof, and wonder if horse hooves manage to collect similar foreign objects that could make them lame.

Yes I use a magnet to pick up any dropped bits.. and yes horses definitely can find some horrid things to get stuck in their feet 🦶

is there an average time per hoof and how patient are the animals on 3 legs? also, was the "... bone??" in the thumbnail just for clicks from people unfamiliar with horse anatomy? hinting at visible bone seemed serious. though you showed that image in the video nothing was ever mentioned. even farriers resort to clickbait?

I always wondered , what is the utility behind putting the hot horseshoe on the hoof ? I know it dosen't hurt the animal at all but is it like , to indent the form of the horseshoe for a better grip or ??? I'm curious.
@painfulelegy812
@painfulelegy812 2 года назад
From what I gather, it helps identify if the shoe is properly shaped, if the foot needs tweaks and the like. And by keeping it hot until you're sure it's right it saves time on reheating it and avoiding making the metal brittle
@carpathianken
@carpathianken 2 года назад
There's 3 principle reasons why a shoe is put onto the hoof hot. 1.Even when you trim a hoof as flat & level as an experienced farrier as this does, there will still be high & low spots.Burning the shoe on levels those out. 2.Burning a shoe on the hoof kills any fungal & bacterial microbial flora & fauna that is present in the hoof & prevents them from proliferating. 3.If you notice the side clips of the shoe are fitted on each opposing quarter of the hoof.If you tried to fit those clips cold on the hoof there would be daylight & gaps between the clips & the hoof wall , which over time would compromise shoe security.Burning clips into the hoof wall gives you a superior clip fit
@unclejohnsoutdoors
@unclejohnsoutdoors 2 года назад
I understand most all of the reasoning behind the process, except for why must the shoe be burned onto the hoof. . .?
@painteddragon8496
@painteddragon8496 2 года назад
Kills any bacteria that can’t withstand the heat, helps to level the foot if some places are a little uneven and helps get the correct fitting I presume.
