There's a great joy in solitude. Walking alone, reading alone, sleeping alone. That's the life I find myself with and I have no desire to change that. However, I have to accept that no-one is ever truly independent; we all rely on each other.

I really liked this video. I've always been single and I enjoy being alone so much that people are often shocked when I tell them that I consider myself as one of the happiest people on earth haha (Candide ou l'optimisme). It seems like they want me to feel bad, as if I needed someone to feel "complete". Maybe I'll fall in love someday but right now, I'm feeling good and that is what matters for me. Have a nice day ! x

totally agree! That's why i'm 18 and i've never been in a relationship, cuz most of a relationships that i see are just like "oh you're cute, i'm cute, lets kiss and fuck and hold hands" and a lot of them are just prohibit all things that secound person do, making this person your property, and trying to be "perfect" couple that media show us, i mean handsome and muscular guy with pretty and skinny girl , both in fashionable clothes, fashionable hair, fashionable behavior. Relationships in these days are not real realtionships and are just boring things arranged under the scheme that media are tell us is now "on top".

Being single is fine with me, it's the loneliness that hurts...
@syddlinden8966
@syddlinden8966 8 лет назад
A relationship does nothing to end loneliness. In fact, sometimes it can make it much, much harder to deal with. I was with the same person for 5 years - someone I could've married, happily - and the loneliness never went away. It was actually worse when we were together, because as wonderful as they were, they couldn't feel things *with me. It may not be the case for all, but if you're feeling deeply lonely, don't just write it off as needing a partner, be sure it's not actually depression, or something. ...I'm not meaning to preach at you... I just take issue with the social myth that loneliness is purely an issue of needing a gf or bf... I've seen too many friends ruin relationships over this.

+Pedro Being alone isn't loneliness. Real loneliness is when you're trapped in a relationship with someone incompatible and you can't be yourself.

i think any crush or putting someone on a pedestal is just the feeling of love, if you want to attach that feeling with a person that's fine. i think we are here to have experiences and evolve, so that means the whole soul mate idea won't work, im too selfish to slow down to please someone and i don't crave it at all. i love my friends and i love to be alone, i have no desire to have kids and start a family. i want to look back on life and have so many experiences, i want to remember the people, locations, relationships, jokes, all of it! right now i don't want it, that could change, but yeah i see normal and i want none of that. I'm playing my character in this temporary experience and who i am doesn't crave a relationship, i can't help it, I've always been this way.

if I'm going to be honest it all seems out of date from my perspective, I do love people but if everyone was authentic and real they wouldn't just share all these aspects of themselves with 1 person, we are super complex and people are just your reflection like that Justin Timberlake song lol that's what a relationship is, learning about yourself through this other person to eventually be whole again. but that world doesn't exist yet lol.

Ok, so you wouldn't like all that (meeting parents, being always together, etc) even with that one guy? I mean, as far as I understand, he still means something to you.. I'm sorry for asking, it's just (like in any other video of yours) I have the same situation. I've known only one guy that would be perfect for me (we didn't date or anything), and if we were together, I would have accepted gladly all those limitations. The problem is to find someone whose priorities and interests are similar to yours, than you wouldn't have to sacrifice so much, right?
@FloralFidelity
@FloralFidelity 8 лет назад
I feel this so much! I like having all my time to myself and any loneliness I feel now is not bad enough for me to give up that freedom. Any relationship will have hard aspects and I just don't see the reason to put up with that if I'm content being single. I can't imagine being completely comfortable around another human and preferring their company instead of being alone. I don't think the pros of a relationship would outweigh the cons for me!

I just turned 28 and never been in a relationship EVER. One of my reasons is because I live in a very misogynistic and sexiste country where I am always a property to a man until I die so I rather be a property of my father than a total stranger where I am under his mercy. If I were to be in a relationship, it has to be with the opposite gender through marriage only so it is a no for me. The other reason is that I can't divorce since I am a female and I see my poor friends getting hell of a life because of it. I honestly appreciate that I am single because I have the liberty to buy what I want and work for my self plus I have a great family to be with. I get critics from people who think that I am a waste of space or people think that because I did something "un appropriate" so no one wants me. I really don't care about what strangers say to me. I would say that I feel sorry for them because I see their life and I see how they really feel about it. I have people now telling me that I am lucky for being single. I always thought that there was something wrong about me for not feeling the need to be with someone but now I feel that I am not wrong at all. as you said, some people are in relationships designed by what society present not designed as they want. I am also a little selfish :) don't like to be controlled or even control. I appreciate the time I spend on my own reading, writing ...etc Thank you for your lovely video :) it is awesome to see someone sharing a video with an unpopular opinion. vous êtes superb comme toujours :)

If your meet the right man, then you will consider spending time with him. Normally 3-4 months you get a good impression of another person's personality, and heart. After that point you will know whether it will work or not. Do not try to make something work if it will not work. Do put effort into expanding your social network so as to be able to see your available options.

I completely agree. I've always been a very independent person. I know what I like, how I like it and when I like to do it. I enjoy individual activities like art, writing, reading, spending time in nature. Solitude is an amazing gift when truly appreciated. I've only met one person in my life who was able to completely capture my heart, and allow me to be open to putting those personal activities on the sidelines. Far too many people feel they "need" to be in a relationship to be happy or be fulfilled. When, in reality, we can just as easily fulfill ourselves. Fulfill our own needs. I've never met anyone like that since, and until I do, I have no intentions of getting into a relationship. I know what true connection feels like- and you don't find that with just anyone.

You said something so on point that I had to write it down: "I am a dreamer and I like things that are beautiful, that make me dream, that make me feel like I'm experiencing my life to the fullest, that fill me up with emotions so strong I can barely handle them, things that inspire me". You basically summed me up. I'm not saying that we are entirely alike in that, but if I, a 21 year old girl from Poland, can feel this way about myself, I bet there are other people who share similar feelings. I thought I was the only person I know that loves that feeling of constant inspiration, when you just do something and everything flows in you, the energy, the passion, the harmony and the need for being and creating something bigger than myself. I also love spending time by myself - I love reading and reflecting on what I'm reading, I love my studies and I could literally spend hours learning new things and new languages. I enjoy watching films by myself and later on thinking on what they mean to me. And guess what? I am in a relationship with a man who is completely different, who shares slightly other values, who spends his leisure time differently and who focuses on earthly matters. What is even more interesting, he is the person who gets me the most, who understands me in a way no one does and who accepts my choices, my freedom, my need for being alone or doing something just for me. And I do the same for him. He is the best person I could ever be in a relationship with and I believe that what we have been building for the last 3,5 years will only grow in strength, as well as we will continue to grow in our love and support for each other. We make each other better and every day we try to be the best versions of ourselves. Ana, I hope that you will read this and maybe it will give you some insight and hope that there is someone who is just perfect for you - you just need to wait for this person to come into your life. After all, when you meet them, you will realize why it didn't work out with anyone else. Hugs from Laura from Poland xx

Great topic to have a conversation about! It's even more fascinating how society has an inexplicable influence to the stigma of singleness. Love that you touched upon the point that some people are single not because there is something inherently wrong but a choice they make, similarly someone that chooses to be in a relationship. It is not a right or wrong binary when it comes to single or attached but to accept that different choices other than own, are to be accepted and respected.

"I think I like freedom more than the idea of a romantic relationship". I think that is the quote that sums up this video and I can relate to you so much! I have been single most of my life and I can say from my experience that it has given me so much freedom to choose the things that I love and want to do with my life. I think having a partner is also something that could be very beautiful, but I do not like the idea of transforming my life entirely just because I am with someone else. I believe that the perfect way to have a relationship is to accept that each person is unique and has his or her own dreams, and to fully love them means to accept that we cannot change that person to suit us best. It is important to respect that freedom that we all have as individuals.

While I love being single, something about this point of view kind of bothers me. I completely understand what you are saying when you talk about not wanting to be with someone when it "doesn't taste as good as what I get in my imagination." I used to feel this way, and still do sometimes, but I think this is a bit of a sad way to think of people. Not to say that it needs to be in the context of a relationship, but I think people can be just as good or better than what is in our heads, just in different ways. I don't think I really expressed my true thoughts on this, but this is the only way I can describe it. I'm not trying to be rude, I love your videos, and I love that you talk about these things, as I have always felt pressure to date, which is especially hard on me (as I'm sure you) as someone who falls on the asexual spectrum. Hugs xx

I do agree that ultimately it comes to selfishness and the unwillingness to give up other priorities. Another reason is the amount of energy one has. Some people are just very passionate and social and they have time and energy to maintain many relationships, while some just don't. I don't deny that relationships can bring happiness and kids may give a feeling that is larger than every other type of joy in life. However this kind of happiness comes with a cost and many obligations. Happiness means different things to different people or at different stages of life. We just have to learn to respect each other!

There are pros and cons for both. My first ever relationship was when I was 23 years old, until that point I spent my teens and early 20s as a single person and really enjoyed my freedom and independence and my ability to do or say anything I wished without needing to consider anyone else. From time to time, I may have felt a tad lonely or wondered why, when my friends had boyfriends, the reason I had not. As is normal for someone who's never had a boyfriend. But the best part of singledom is how it allows you to grow up and discover who you are without anyone else influencing that and I'm so happy to have had that time. I've been in the same relationship for 2.5 years with a guy who is so wonderful, quirky, witty, kind and weird. I get on so well with him and honestly, he is the best person I know. However, there is the disadvantage if being unable to be as spontaneous or to go away with friends as much. I think both relationship statuses are great and perhaps we need to enjoy both while we are single/in a couple.

I love this video! The boy I love broke up with me almost 5 months ago and now as a single it's my goal to love myself and be all about MYSELF. In the relationship I always felt lonely. Of course I was happy when we were together, but I was so attached to him because I hoped he would fill a hole inside my heart. I had depression back then, he couldn't stand it. It hurts that he doesn't love me anymore because I still love him, but would a relationship actually work again? The breakup led me to veganism, yoga and practicing self love. If we were still together, I would've never healed inside!

I like this video and I agree with you. However, you can be in at relationship and still do all the things you like to do, and have alone time, if you want to. I'm very committed to my boyfriend, but I don't live with him, and we both have a lot of hobbies that are different from one another's. I love to travel, but he doesn't like it as much as me and doesn't want to spend money on it, so sometimes I go on trips alone or with my mom, or with friends. I don't think it's healthy to be around someone 24/7 because you grow tired of each other and take each other for granted (familiarity breeds contempt, they say). I think having a little mystery in a relationship makes you appreciate the other person more. That being said, it definitely takes trust to do this...you can't have a relationship like this with someone who is very insecure and needs constant attention. But if both of you are confident and trust each other, it can really work.

Not meaning sound offensive at all but I agree, it is an aspect of selfishness, this is why none of my previous relationships worked out, I always felt the need to be free and that my quality of live was better when single. Being selfish is completely ok, I don't know why society give it such a bad rap.. But one day I decided Id like to change, for me, and here I am in a healthy and happy relationship, and my perspectives have changed. So what I am trying to say is that people are dynamic, you may be that way now, a little selfish, and you may change, both are great and being happy is what is important. Very insightful video.

I can relate in everything you say, I always thought that I was too selfish for not wanting to bear with all those things that comes with being with someone in a formal relationship and it's only now that I'm starting to be comfortable with it. The worst part is the loneliness, sometimes it hits really hard.. And sex. Yeah, when you don't enjoy having sex with anyone, it's tough. Btw, I'm learning french and since you are french, do you know if there is some site on the internet where I can find shows in french? Just to hear the language and become familiar with it. Hmmm.... I have been single, married, divorced, "in a relationship", madly in love, desperately happy, completely miserable. Love is that dimension of life that requires you to deliberately become vulnerable, to depend upon someone else for part of your life's satisfaction. Love is that eternal contradiction, where someone else's happiness becomes essential to your own. I don't recommend it. It's not safe. You lose control. Feel heights and depths you feel no other way. No. Love is dangerous. It makes you into something, someone, different. Much safer to be single. To have manageable, controllable lives without risk.

Well, I can relate about the freedom as a single for nearly a decade. I like being a free mind, who have the means to do whatever i please. But i feel tired of it at the same time, tired of not sharing anything, tired of the lack of warmth. Yesterday had me encounter another rejection from somebody. So I am not free to have what i want actually. Now I'll just man up like always and stay in this grey area. Thanks for your thoughts

I agree with you! I have been feeling the pressure to be in a relationship. And I thought I wanted the relationship but I like being alone. Maybe I want a loving and supportive relationship but I don't see why I have chase after that. It honestly scares me that I might have to change my lifestyle for someone. It is just as mature to know how to enjoy myself as being in a relationship, if not more so.

Society really has nothing to do with how a relationship is. It's just the two people who shape it 100%. When it's right, nothing in the world can compare, and you know it. I'm talking about a right, deep relationship that has been invested in over time. In a right one, you each get your own space and want each other to have all you want in life and fullest life possible, with each other being just adding to it. Some aren't ready for that or don't yet know themselves enough to find it, but when you get it, nothing compares and nothing is inconvenient. Both have to be whole themselves to achieve that. I was married almost 25 yrs, having 5 children together. I got robbed because he died suddenly at 45, but I was fortunate to have experience having someone who solely loved truly unconditionally,, never doubting he would do anything if it gave me happiness. That's such a raw, intense feeling that is also secure and feeling like home that is hard to explain until one has lived it. It's like trying to understand the love a mother has for their child before they've ever held their first child the first time, but when you live it, things make much more sense suddenly. It's not relationships that are a problem, but people settling for less than that. Many just want a relationship so try to make someone fit that spot or change to make themselves fit. That doesn't work. When you are both being 100% yourselves and make each other's world a truly better, safer happiness place naturally, then it works and works well.

I wonder, how much does that social pressure line up with the kinds of pressures social pressures asexuals get in general? As someone who's celibate I personally find rather a lot of overlap - essentially because society assumes dating = sex, even though it doesn't for everyone. So I'm curious about your take on this. It's so annoying and rude when family ask about your love life with things like, "when are you getting married and having kids?" or "why aren't you dating?" Then it's like, "do I respond 'never' and 'because,' and field the questions, or brush it off?" Thanks for defending our right to live our lives by ourselves! This was wonderful.

!!! I was just thinking about this the other day! Exactly - exactly. Never having been in a relationship I never really saw how people have to divide their time and compensate for so much, but I know that being alone I feel free. And that you'd have to be pretty amazing to make me want otherwise. It's a little bit of the same thing why I've never wanted children either. I just don't want all of the responsibilities - I'm a very sensitive person so handling more than myself all the time can be mentally exhausting very quickly. Also, the two times I've had feelings for others I never wanted the kind of relationship society portrays either. I have more flexible views of relationships and less 'romantic'.

i can relate to everything you're saying. i would agree with you 100% IF love were a choice. but it isn't. and that's probably the reason why so many people are unhappy in their relationships and break up eventually. love is a wonderful thing, and so is freedom. but it seems in our society we haven't really figured out a way to combine those two.

I also totally feel the same way like I would love to be in a relationship if it was someone who I was in love with and who of course loved me back. The only person I ever felt that for was that one guy, but he ended up being a terrible guy (hence why that relationship was so short) and definitely not someone I should be with, but a very good lesson for me and has made me really appreciate my singleness and perhaps this opportunity to be selfish and explore what I want to do, and not have to thing about someone else and just do whatever. I've had feelings for people since him but not to the point where I would want to date them or give up being single, and if anything that experience made my standards even higher for what it takes for me to be in a relationship with someone and the quality of the relationship I want.

I envy people with this view. For my whole life, I've been pursuing love and even though it's not so bad anymore now when I realize there aro so many other things than that, I don't think I can ever stop being "obsessed with it." I'm naturally the type of person who feels like they can't live without, let's say a romantic involvement. I also felt like I really connected to you when you briefly touched the "dreaming" topic, because personally I am blinded by unrealistic people and scenarios that are either impossible or very hard to find and experience and it is very frustrating to still get reconciled with it again and again, that life is not always (it is, rarely) like in stories. There's been one person in my life, as well as you mentioned, we used to have a relationship but their (let's not make the gender important now) opinion on relationship is very similar to you, they can do this, being happy on their own. I always struggle with that. When I realized I was unhealthily depended on the person in this longest relationship I've had, it was the most painful thing in my life when it ended (also because of this very fact), it was hard to survive, for months. It made me so much stronger but still there is no day I wouldn't wish I had someone to love by my side. Anyways thanks so much for making this video, it was enlightening!! :)

I definitely relate to this. I have only been in one relationship, when I was 19 (I'm 20 now), but it was very short so I guess you could say my views for the future are very formed around me being single. Not that k necessarily always want to be single, but that's what I know best and is the neutral state for me, if that makes sense.

The thing is, you should go into a relationship with a mentality of what you can GIVE, not what you can get or will loose. You need to be happy with yourself, not try to find happiness in it. If both are giving, then you will get something in return, but you should not expect something when entering in one, as you will get disappointed almost every times. The focus should be on whenever you're satisfied with what you are getting back, not if you're getting what you expected. If you're in the mentality of "I'm gonna loose my time, loose this and that" then clearly, you are right where you need to be at this moment in your life. You have to remember however that being in a relationship doesn't mean 100% time together. Anyway, maybe one day, a shift will happen, and you will want to share your happiness, your "selfishness" with someone else, and passing some of your time making someone happy will be more important than the freedom that you have and value at the moment

I definitely related my self with what you said. I kind of envy (a little) people like you who choose to be free. But I know for sure that if I wasn't married I would feel like I'm missing something big. So I understand your choise and I dream to live like this one day again but not today.

Personally, I am in a relationship and I think that discovering ourself is important but it's not quite different if you have a girl/boyfriend. After all, I am still free as I was before my relationship, it is just a question of choice as you said. :) (I tried to speak english, I hope that I didn't do mistakes)

ALso I have been "officially single" (excluding flings and casual things) for all my 20 years of life and I've felt inadequate for most of it and it even went as far as me trying to mend myself into something I'm not. It was only recently (in the last year or so) I said fuck it and began to do things for me and I am the happiest with myself in a really long time :) Change is the only constant

I just find utter loneliness in solitude. I would agree with the saying that no man is an island. I personally hate living alone. Get up and house is empty then come home from work and alone. Even putting sex to one side there is the matter of sharing your thoughts and experiences with somebody. Meeting a girlfriend's parents or friends is never much fun but it is something that I would put up with.

I've spent many years single largely because I have discovered that overall I am happier alone than I am in a relationship. In some respects, I admire asexuality because I feel it would make that decision easier. Maybe there would be less internal conflict. I would also like to share my aunt's story. Her mother (my grandmother) once told her not to get married until you've done all the things you want to do, because once you're married, you won't do them. My aunt never married, is in her late 60's and says "There are still things I want to do."

Romantic relationships really are hard work and they are very rewarding but yes I don't think someone has to be in a romantic relationship to be happy! Sometimes I think it's unnatural the way society tells us there one person out there who we should spend most of our time with for the rest of our life. I think non romantic relationships are underrated. Although I want to keep relationships as a big part of my life when I'm old, I'm not sure about marriage.. Who knows. I'm just scared when I'm old, if I never married and had children that I would be alone and I would not want that to happen.

The assumption that all human beings pursue love or romance, especially by means of a monogamous long-term relationship.) PS: Your English "o"s are sometimes pronounced like French "eu"s in this videos, and it was a bit disturbing for me at first, I have to say. Anyway, your English is great.

I have an intense need to be loved cause I dont have family support etc. but I think love is overrated. We are thought that it is a good thing but is it really? People kill for love and it causes jealousy and acts as a drug. Relationships are also dependant. Its not healthy to see someone almost every day. You lose yourself and I dont want someone pestering me all the time for sex. So what can I do? Stay alone and miserable. :( Some enjoy it but I dont. Its MUCH harder without family or friends.

I never really had the desire to be in a romantic relationship/sexual relationship. I am selfish and I dont want to sacrifice for no body at this point in my life. I do have dreams and goals I want to pursue if and when the time comes where I feel like I have done half of what I wanted to and meet the right guy with a similar interest and goal for life I will be down for comittment and compromise. Meet me halfway 😂 until then singlehood all the way.

I prefer to have a girlfriend (my opinion), even with all the restrictions you mentioned. At the end of the day i find better to have a person at home that supports you, that loves you, that you can talk about your frustrations without judging or backstabin you. One night stands don't do that for you. The only bullshit society spreads about having a partne, at least for us men, is that we need women to be a greater human being throughout the road of life, like that saying " Behind every great man there's a great woman". Such a bs, lol.
