Van Gogh only sold one painting in his life, and it was bought by his brother Theo. People just couldn't see his genius through his mental health issues. I think Who handled this 'what if' scenario brilliantly, as bitter sweet as it was. It wouldn't have been nearly as meaningful if he had suddenly been cured.

Tbh, this is one of the best Doctor Who episodes, but it's kind of a waste not to watch the rest. Honestly, the characters are brilliant, the stories are amazing, I honestly thought Doctor Who was a funny light-hearted goofy show but on so many levels it's so good and deserves to be seen from s1 to s10. No matter how good the episodes you pick will be, you won't appreciate them as much as you would if you watched the whole show.

Without the Rory backstory this episode doesn’t fully hit imo. You get the emotional turmoil of Vincent, but you don’t get what’s going on with Amy, which makes Vincent seem so much greater. His ability to see the unseen isn’t limited to alien monsters.

Something to note that I find fun. In the song Vincent by Don Mclean there is a line that goes like this "Like the strangers that you've met . The ragged men in the ragged clothes" And what is Amy's nickname for the Doctor??? Raggedy Man. Great foreshadowing.

It's not like the "accidental" always has something bad going on where the doctor goes. In one episode, Doctor accuses tardis of not always taking him where he wants to get. And Tardis replies that he always takes him where he is needed. The core of tardis (which is not a mindless machine) is the vortex of time. So theoretically, the whole history of the universe is in the engine of this miracle. So tardis knows exactly where a doctor is needed. Hence its "accidental" missed dates and places.

Well, fun fact without spoilers xD Most actors in doctor who are either classically trained or have done quite a bit of live theater, that's why even people that appear for 1min are so good. In the US it's a 50/50. Some have been trained and the such, some have just landed the role of their lives by sheer luck. In the UK it's rarely the case, most of them have been trained. (Btw not from the UK or the US, this is what I've noticed as a foreigner to both after more than a decade of watching entertainment from both)

so this is my favourite episode of Dr Who by far but nowhere below can I see anyone talking about the writer of the episode. The writer is in fact one of the greatest modern writers of all time. Richard Curtis......... In case that means nothing to you he wrote love actually, or the Tall guy, or Notting hill, or four weddings and a funeral, or Brigit Jones diary, amongst many other films, or perhaps you know him from co-writing Blackadder and Mr Bean with Rowan Atkinson. He wrote this episode as a tribute to his sister who he lost to suicide. A women he describes as brilliant and a huge fan of Vincent's paintings. The pain, love, celebration and loss of this episode are absolutely real.

This episode is an example of a bootstrap paradox. Vincent saw paintings on the wall he hadn't even painted yet, but he had to go back in time and paint them, so they would be on the wall in the future for him to see, so he could go back in time to paint them. V.V

The writer of this episode, Richard Curtis wrote, "So - here’s the thing - the key reason I wrote this episode - was out of love for my sister Bindy. She was a gorgeous and brilliant person, 2 years older than me. She loved Vincent Van Gogh and life. She couldn’t have been more full of generosity and joy. But half way through her life she was hit by depression and intermittently it hurt her for the rest of her life. And a few years before this show, like Vincent, she took her own life. That was me trying to show Bin how glorious she had been in our lives - and how nothing could change that, taking her own life wasn’t a failure by her, or a rejection of all of us. It was, as they say on Love island, what it was."
