Mark got one thing spot-on. After 1-0 down, England subbed on 3 attackers out of panic. But then the players went full "freestyle" mode, and the attack improved dramatically, which created the goal. This is all because the talent of this English squad simply outclassed the Swiss. And it kinda reflects how shite Southgate's tactic (singular) is.
Team cohesion is definitely not mentioned often enough when people discuss the USMNT or the English team. It's so obvious that this is just as important as individual quality. When Spain won their trophies it was basically a team of Barca and Real players. Germany in 2014 was Bayern and Dortmund. I know that there are exceptions which often get carried by some extraordinary stars to success. But that is a risky thing to rely on, especially if the other teams are stacked as well. In German TV it was always discussed as "the Bayern Block" or "the Dortmund Block". Of course, those players had a huge advantage over other teams that had only the few international games to increase their understanding. The manager's job then is to conserve as much of the club level tactics as possible while adjusting as necessary when combining the different blocks. If you're at a decent club level you're already ahead of many other teams.
The way they curerntly play, England might be the worst team to ever win a tournament of this caliber. Totally agree. Also yeah...wtf is it with Akanji taking that pen? He was clearly out of it at that stage of the game. Surely what he delivered can't be the 5th best penalty shooter they had available.
He used to own a Jaguar estate car 😂 I used to live in the town where Southgate lives and once met him in the Tip. His Jag was Maroon and even had a spare wheel on! I feel that car was symbolic of englands performances ever since as his choice of vehicle was as boring as his tactics 😂
People forget how bad france were when they won the world cup and it was the exact same for portugal when they won the euros 😂😂. It just seems to work for tournament football
The only reason that Saka had that chance to score was because Rice made a run forward into the box for the first time in the tournament, that run dragged a defender with him which created the space for Saka, we haven't seen that before now becuase Southgate plays it so fucking safe, If England just took the shackles off they would create so many more chances but it seems like they're so scared to take risks
@@nynthonjust like milan in 04/05 juwt like man utd whenever they played barca, just like liverpool v madrid just like man city for the past ten years. Just because youre flying doesnt mean youll win
I agree with some of what you and Mark say but you can't deny that we are able to stay 'in' games until the end and that means we are always a threat. Switzerland are not a poor side but really didn't have a sniff against us. Southgate also deserves credit for getting the players to feel unbeatable. England of old would have lost that 1 - 0 but this side have a lot of character. I thought our build up play was much better in the first half. He also didn't play Saka left back as everyone was banging on about and got a MoTM performance. I think if shaw can play 60 against the Netherlands we will be a much bigger threat. Bringing Gordon on doesn't necessarily improve us if bellingham and foden comes off because we lose overloads in the centre where we absolutely dominated the swiss. He has to take criticism for bringing one left back though. He also hasn't proved to me that he's tactical enough to make changes before the opposition score and that could cost us, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Turkey are both out, teams who played quite a bit more entertaining football.
Not a sniff? You're quite delusional. That saka intervention after that final switch of play saved you, not to mention a defender like akanji taking the first pen and missing. England would've struggled to win and go to penalties against even Georgia lol
@@DeanRTaylor That was a decent chance had that cross gone on. You were lucky against Slovakia and lucky against Swiss. Southgate should probably take the lottery because he'll win it lol
The one thing that has pissed me off this Euros has been Kane and u explained the reason why, almost makes me not wanna watch the rest of Englands games even if we make it to the finals. Its almost like he knows himself and is trying to get subbed off. If Southgate plays Kane next game idk if i can even watch it, we would get battered
What are you even talking about? You genuinely think that as well probably. It’s a case of going a goal down and big players actually sacking off cowboy tactics and taking chances, hence the saka goal. If you actually think the Swiss just folded to England after beating Italy 2-0 in the way they did you’re delusional
How much further along would Arsenal be today if they had sacked Wenger sooner? He wins an FA Cup during a dreadful season, and they keep him. Set them back 2 years. Same here if a change isn’t made.
I can't put England and France in the same basket, as France has much harder opponents, creates still triple the amount of chances and shots to England.. but they are just missing so so much.. if they start scoring, no one will talk about it again. England do 90 minutes nothing and hope for a spark of brilliance from everything.
Garth Southgate " if it's not a goal I don't wanna see it". First shot on target 🎯 goal! He is the greatest England manager of our lifetime. It's criminal but he's getting a knighthood so get used to calling him Sir Southgate.
You mentioned about being worried if Southgate made it to the final and lost and kept his job because of it. Brother this happened in 2020 euro's 😂 If this happened again there would be an outrage
Don’t even mention Greece 2004. We have no similarities between engalnd 2024. Our players had passion for their country and carried a defensive masterclass that LIMITED zinedine zidane. This England team can’t keep a clean sheet against Slovakia and Switzerland and depend on belligol to save them
france carried by their incredible defense england carried by individual player's brilliant clutch both are lucky teams but got world class players at their possesion
Unpopular Opinion: Negative Football is unfortunately the best way to win tournament style competitions I know its ugly to look at but The tournament style rules favors clubs to play like this Someone like Pep Guardiola as great as he is....would really struggle in International Cup
I would argue it depends on your squad, culture and opponent. England would have been more likely to reach the semifinal with Guardiola as a nanager. Playing positive possession football favours the side with better quality players. Your team needs to be able to execute it and sadly this England team would have been able to. Missed opportunity, even though England can obv still win it.
@@itsamenl majority of the players on this team either can/did played in a Pep or Pep like style football.....it's just easier to just park the bus and hope the other team makes a mistake or take your chances penalties.....Either Frence or England winning this Euros with this Bullshit
@@citystargtx3 You say it is easier, but England is through thanks to shot from outside the box and in the round before a bicycle kick. It may coat less energy, but it isn't easier in the sense of making sure you progress through a tournament. Luck becomes a bigger factor.
If he didn't make it to at least the semis with the pathetic paths to them it would be nothing short of shambolic with the players he has at his disposal.
Have you seen The English squad ? that’s like getting prime barca or Prime Real Madrid to semi finals they have a generational squad and they winning on luck
Imagine being a yank and sitting there talking down on England when your team can't even get out a group.. The way you're hating on England Is pretty annoying to listen too.. You're a yank you're not even at our table
if either england or france manage to win the Eurocup we could have one the worst if not the worst performing Eurocup Champion in history and that sh*t is hilarious tbh
all 4 teams in the euros have a great chance of winning the euros even england can win it by luck england netherlands not going to be an easy game even france vs spain not going to be an easy game i think spain look hungry for the euros the real test starts for england in the next two games and they got an easy ride
He's talking pound for pound. In terms of the quality of the squad, Greece didn't play bad for the expectation whereas France play horrific football for the quality they have. Portugal though you have a point, that team were pure terrorists
He's saying whatever his subscribers wants to hear... RU-vid success is all about catching the mood... negativity sells and it especially sells on England...why?... because 90% of the world don't like England...
You can’t compare to Greece 2004, the squad England have shouldn’t play like this ofc where as Greece played to their strengths, Greece is more comparable to Leicester that year in terms of football miracles
Italy are the worst team to win tournaments playing sterile negative football (or be runners up). You won't remember the first group stage of 1982 WC or every game they played in 94 WC. The final against Brazil was the most dour two hours of football in history. It went to pens. They won the 1968 Euros on the toss of a coin. And the last Euros on pens in the semi and pens again in the final. The 06 WC win on pens (again). SIX tournaments they've won by boring everybody. And don't mention Greece in 2004.
Is it only me who honestly couldn't care how we play as long as we win? Play bad and lose then we can complain but were finding ways to win because whatever Southgate is doing is working
I’m sorry but suggesting the players stop following instructions when losing is just idiotic. That’s isn’t even nearly true. You can’t blame Southgate when it goes wrong and not give credit when it goes right. That’s ridiculous 😂 it makes no sense
Showing your eyes to the keeper makes it easier and Sommer guessed correctly. He just so happens to be one of the shortest keepers in the world. Toney is a bum that should not be allowed back in football.
People like goldbridge can cry all they want about performances but what they don’t get is the only stat that remotely matters at the end of the day is that W or L in the column. I team couldn’t care less if you think it’s boring, if they are winning then it’s right
bro 1 shot on target in 90 minutes is not good watch the spain vs germany match both teams were creating incredible chances for each other that should've been the finals france is carried by their defense and england by individual performance this is a team game one side or one player should not be the one that breaks the deadlock
Kane need runners he’s the best striker in the world currently but we’re is his fucking runners foden need to play central don’t blame kane for Southgate building a team that completely oppose how’s kanes play and don’t work together if Southgate continues his stupid tactic Kane can’t play
Im disappointed you keep covering Goldbridge, Nick. He farms negativity for clicks. He can be a very funny streamer but rarely insightful at all as he just ragebaits.
such a dumb fucking rant. Shit happens, not everything goes the way you want in tournament football, England have every right to be where they are, Switzerland didn't take their chances. Deal with it.
