Chucky was an animatronic doll. This was big technology back in the 80’s. Disney, I believe started this. Horror films hit different back in the 80’s. Everything was done using practical effects and before CGI became a thing. It put it on a whole different level of creepy. Great reaction.

What I love is that "the more time you spend in that body, the more human it'll become" Is actually shown through the movie, with first he starts as a normal cartoon like doll..but later on going through the movie, he gets more human like expressions, he gets a receding hairline, he has veins in his eyes, he bleeds.. it's amazing! 16:56-18:10-24:20-29:20-31:31-35:00

Fun facts: In the scene where Chucky runs behind Maggie in a brief shot, that was Alex Vincents little sister in a costume. Aside from that there was also another person Ed Gel who would be in costume for some scenes, as well as an animatronic for the doll too. And for the second fun fact, when Brad Dourif was doing the recording for the scene where Chucky is on fire, he was unaware that his daughter Fiona had walked into the booth, and naturally being as young as she was at the time she freaked out, he was told after he was done and went to go find her, telling her that he was alright.

it hurt my heart to see andy in absolute terror watching chucky coming to get him from the window, and being helpless. one thing they don’t explain clearly, chucky has the strength of the person that inhabits it’s body, the full grown man. which is what’s also so disarming to those he ends up attacking. “how can this ‘doll’ be so strong?” it looks like you guys really enjoyed this movie! i didn’t expect that from anyone so young just discovering the franchise. you’ll probably really love “trilogy of terror” then. it was made for tv and the last entry in the series of stories in the movie, the one about the zuni fetish doll you may enjoy equally as you did chucky. it’s from 1975.

I watched this movie way to young and it gave me a fear of dolls but only at night time. Which made me sleep in my parents room because my walls were covered with unopened dolls and when people gave me those big life size or porcelain dolls I would throw them in the closet. It was so bad that one time when I was playing with a Barbie and her head came off I put her in a bag that zipped and threw It at the bottom of my toy chest because I thought the doll was gonna come to life and hurt me.

The great thing about the practical effects in this movie is that Chucky's face changes SLOWLY throughout the movie. There are 4 different animatronic heads that were used, progressively getting more "human." (and then of course the stapled-together version from Bride Of Chucky-- that's the one most people are familiar with from halloween masks and such)

Way back when studios were trying to make that next, new horror character/franchise. Child's Play was one of the most creative concepts of the era. I liked the first film and the 3 sequels that followed. Parts 2-4, 6 and 7 were from Universal Pictures. Of course, The Universal Monsters' legacy has never left the mind of the culture. This movie is very possible. And James, you hit the nail on the head, I wasn't afraid of Chucky, Charles freaked me out - who looks like that?! In this movie Chucky was animatronics sometimes little person other times. But in the sequel it was 100% animatronics. You will be so impressed. My sister use to make fun of me and say she would buy me one. For an old movie looking back at it they really did an amazing job especially with chucky facial expressions. He looks so real 😳

I think it's really cool how they make you believe it's gonna be one of those old horror movies where it's just insinuated things and suspense building, because of the budget and technology. But then it just goes bat shit crazy.

This was the first Horror film I saw growing up. The second was Body Parts ( Psychologist loses his arm in a car accident but gets another one from a recently executed serial killer) The third was Hellraiser 3: Hell On Earth The fourth was Candyman.

Yeah, cool you guys can add this to your growing list of horror films/reactions...& it's always fun to watch James twitch big-time during the scariest bits (lofl)! Here's a quick question for everyone: while watching this my gf & I were trying to compile a list of freakiest film dolls, but couldn't remember any besides Chucky, Annabelle, the clown from Poltergeist & "Talking Tina" from an old Twilight Zone episode... we'd enjoy hearing more suggestions 😉

my dad used to scare me by telling me he was going to put Chucky in my bedroom closet. Then he would say, "I don't have to put him in your room, I can just leave him downstairs and he'll find his way up to you!". My dad has a nutty sense of humor.

Tbh after getting to see how Charles is like in later films, the fear just goes away because as I've gotten older and rewatch the movies especially Seed of Chucky, I've come to like him and not scared anymore.

Yeah, it's all practical of course. They achieved this a few ways, but you'll also notice that in shots that are QUICK, like over in a second, and that require Chucky to be very mobile, they actually cut to a guy in a Chucky suit in a set that's scaled up. Most of the other times though it really is just a puppet being manipulated very well. Or heck, sometimes they just throw a limp doll at someone, lol. They just know to show that stuff very little when it doesn't look perfect. The facial animatronics are pretty neat too. Movies like this are one reason why 36 year old "grandpas" like me (lol) complain about everything being done in CGI needlessly. You can do so much practically, and most of it still looks great. Until the day comes when CGI looks photorealistic, it will always age badly.

The Chuckyverse is a great way to put it. There is so much more to the Chucky franchise you have to check out (in order) to follow the intense storyline that grows and grows. Child’s Play 1, 2 & 3 Bride of Chucky Seed of Chucky Curse of Chucky Cult of Chucky Chucky TV series 1 and 2. Same voice actor Brad Dourif throughout. From Curse his real life daughter, Fiona Dourif was added as a current main character also. Alex Vincent who plays Andy is also still part of the franchise as an adult. It’s gets even more intense, chaotic, complex, dark and humerous all at the same time!

I too watched this when I was far too young and have been creeped out by dolls ever since. I can handle it better as an adult....but whenever I see one of the Chucky dolls in real life, I feel so uneasy. I can not go near it or look away from it just in case. One Halloween, in highschool, a classmate brought a chucky doll along to match her costume, I was anxious the entire period O_o

I like to say it's a relief to see two well-adjusted young men with apparent morals. Chucky is definitely more suspenseful then scary. But at a time before CGI, it was and is excellent entertainment.

Chucky(Brad Dourif) was in the original Dune and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The mom is famous for the 7th Heaven tv series. The detective Mike Norris(Chris Sarandon) was in 2 horror films the 1980s film Fright Night and the 1977 film The Sentinel. Maggie(Diana Manoff) was in the movie Grease and her mother is Oscar winner Lee Grant from horror films Damien: Omen 2 and Visiting Hours. Definitely watch All the Child’s Play films and the tv series is quite good too with S2 on the way! One of the ultimate doll movies is a segment from the 1970s Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black. Scary good.

Well guys get ready for a wild ride...especially if you continue to watch the whole series. These movies are good throughout the whole series, but in different ways. They kind of change style as they go but remain entertaining the whole time. I really feel that Chucky is one of the best movie monsters in all of cinema. The crazy thing is that three years before these movies came out there was a real toy called a "My Buddy" doll that they took inspiration from when they designed the "Good Guy" doll that becomes the evil Chucky. This lead many people to throw away their "My Buddy" dolls because they creeped people out. I remember a friend of our family that got rid of their kids doll. LOL. Look it up. One thing they don't really explain well in this first one is that Chucky has super human strength but in a dolls form. As the movies go on the back ground of Charles Lee Ray is explained much more so that you understand his background in the occult and magic. The next two are good and similar to this and then the fourth movie, The Bride of Chucky, is good but in a very different way.

Oh, one more thing. You wanna talk creepy doll features, I had one that kept kids aware of it's status. It did and said this and that, but at some point the batteries go down. So the doll had a programming message and it repeated "change my batteries" over and over. When you don't know about that you will have nightmares

This movie freaked me out as a kid because I had a My Buddy Doll that looks just like him 🤣. I was so freaked out I made my mom get rid of the doll. She told me she did but left him in the trunk for a few months and forgot. She asked me to get something from the trunk and I thought Chucky came back to kill me. I couldn't watch this or any doll/vantriliquist dummy anything without freaking out.

Another fun fact there was a little person dressed up like the Chucky doll in half of the movie. The reason being cause the puppeteers were limited on how much movement the Chucky doll had. That's why if look close at some of the scenes Chucky looks bigger than he normally is.

This movie is my favourite horror movie. It's actually a funny story: the first time I saw a scene from Child's Play was when I was like 3 years old. I couldn't sleep and, when I went to my parents (who were in the living room), the first thing I saw and heard was Chucky with a knife in hand and laughing maniacally on TV!!! I remember screaming and running away and my dad going after me! XD I didn't watch another horror movie until I was like 15/16 and I was forced to watch The Ring by my "friends". Now I love horror films with my favourite being Child's Play (the very first film that scared me off of the genre XD). Are you also going to watch the remake? I personally feel like it lacks something that the original had but *shrugs* to each their own I guess
