Fun fact: Robert Englund fell asleep in his trailer during filming in full make-up and when he woke up he scared the hell out of himself when he looked in the mirror lol. Classic horror.
Sounds like a girl I went to school with. Watched this movie with her brother, had a nightmare and woke up having her first period. Scared the hell out of her.
It's really a kind of dream situation, where your first role is a gigantic hit. Even though he wasn't the lead, he got tons of exposure from this film.
8:05 Interesting fact about how her being on the ceiling was created - this room wasn't part of a house but specifically built small rotating construction. So for that shot they simply "flipped" the room and fixed the camera upside down so it looked like she was on the ceiling. No computer effects, all practical.
@@whitenoisereacts the blood fountain from the waterbed was a similar practical affect. the room was upside down with the bed on the ceiling. unfortunately the affect worked a little to well. there was so much blood it got away from them and people were almost electrocuted.
@@BrentLm not just similar, but actually the same room just with different furniture. Plus they could only do that one take and couldn't do it again because of the "blood" causing the electrical issues. And I had heard that "Freddy" and "Nancy" were on set to watch that effect and "Freddy" was the one who rescued "Nancy" from the possible electrocution.
The way this movie uses surrealism and confusion to keep you constantly on-edge is pretty brilliant. You really feel like you're slowly losing track of what's reality and what's dream, just like Nancy. Even the way all the grown-ups slowly become more and more infuriatingly useless - more and more incapable of listening, helping, or doing anything right - feels exactly like those nightmares when you're in trouble but no one will lift a finger to help you.
In that scene where the wall started to move above Nancy, director Wes Craven actually said that was a completely improvised thing just using light and white spandex. Turned into an iconic moment.
Yeah, on the commentary, he doesn't stop complimenting the fx guys as they had a shoestring budget and they made everything through pure creativity. For example the shot with the girls jump roping and it flowing to the car driving early on took six cameramen and a makeshift setup to get the transition.
I don't believe Nancy would have known 'about' Freddy until she saw his name written in his hat. Then she would ask her mother and (eventually) her mother would explain. Before that point, Freddy might have just been a local legend. A local 'boogeyman' story, with the kids singing the song while jumping rope. Before things were explained, Nancy would only 'know' by seeing this weird guy with knives for fingers who is going after the kids of the people that killed him (although that detail was explained by her mother in the basement)..
Just when I thought the horror genre was just about over, this movie was released and introduced one of the genre's best boogeymen ever created. Wes Craven always delivered and was consistent in not being consistent with each film he directed. You never knew what was up his sleeve. The golden age of horror began in the early 1970's, peaked as "slashers" in the early 1980's and began to fizzle by the end of that decade
Nancy is one of the best female characters in a horror movie ever. Gorgeous and super smart. The 2010's gave us the You're Next, Ready or Not, and 10 CL in that regard.
@@peterbates1018nah she was better than Laurie in their debut Nancy was daring, brave and confronted Freddy head on. Laurie was resourceful but mostly lucky lol
Years ago,two of my friends went to see it in when we were in high school as I stayed home with my two younger brothers on a Friday night. They came to my house afterwards, RUNNING to my house after they got out of their car, scared as poop! We prided ourselves on not being afraid of most horror films, but after they told me about it I was scared to death! Mind you, I haven't seen it yet! 2 years later I saw it for myself....... yup, this movie scared me too and I was 2 years older! This is a classic!
It's inferred in the series that Freddy was also a molester (not just a killer). The reason he was after these kids specifically is because they were the children of the parents that killed him. As for the "weird plant," it was the schools boiler room. I love this series.
This movie is such a classic! I watched this for the first time totally by accident one night when I was home alone. I was 10 and it definitely traumatized me 🤣 Nowadays it's one of my favorites, though!
nightmare on elm street gave the world a truly evil villain in Freddy and the ultimate final girl in Nancy. It also goes to show that practical effects age far better than cgi :D Also it was inspired by true life events
@RU-vid are Snowflakes blah blah blah blah blah blah blah...blah blah blah...laughs in blah blah blah It's my opinion and I'm not interested in yours :D
@RU-vid are Snowflakes im not mad :D you left a stupid response and you're the one who got all hurt otherwise you wouldn't be using caps lol bothered much?
@RU-vid are Snowflakes Freddy character was also inpired by true life events. Michael was human till part 2, which was defeated by gun shoots. Jason was also human till part 2. Ginny scared more Jason, to a point he almost pee himself. Chris only confront Jason in the end... You sleep, Freddy will kill you, you dont sleep it will kill you. Sooner or later you will face Freddy, because the brain shuts downs and you will sleep, Bam! Theres Freddy! Even if Freddy doesnt kill you right away, he will torment you with your fear, which can cause heart attack... Bam, you are death! hahhahah
not about a serial killer though , but wes cravens bully was named Freddy K. the other "true part" was Wes Craven revealed that the central theme of A Nightmare on Elm Street - the idea of being killed in your dreams - was directly inspired by a true story. “I’d read an article in the L.A. Times about a family who had escaped the Killing Fields in Cambodia and managed to get to the U.S.,” he said. “Things were fine, and then suddenly the young son was having very disturbing nightmares. He told his parents he was afraid that if he slept, the thing chasing him would get him, so he tried to stay awake for days at a time. When he finally fell asleep, his parents thought this crisis was over. Then they heard screams in the middle of the night.”
There is a crossover! Freddy vs. Jason! I also recommend Nightmare on Elm Street 3. You do not have to watch the second one to understand the third. The 3rd is the favorite one of most people
the whole movie was just Nancy's dream premonition. That's why she asked do you believe that people can dream what's going to happen. the ending is just the beginning
Fun Fact: Lin Shaye who was the psychic in Insidious is the the teacher in this film, and is the younger sister of Robert Shaye the producer and co-executive of Shaye Productions, the original name of New Line Cinema. And the dream therapist is the actor who is the voice of Roger Rabbit in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Part 2 is also good and worth a watch. Very underated. Different characters but much more killings. The other ones, especially after Part 3, become, mostly because of Freddy's quips, more of a comedy/horror rather than true horror to me. I still watched all of them though 🤣
My personal ranking of the Top 5 movies in the franchise: #01) Nightmare on Elm Street #02) Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors #03) Nightmare on Elm Street 7: A New Nightmare #04) Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master #05) Freddy vs Jason
Jump right into 3 if you wanna know what happens to Nancy next, then complete it with “Wes Cravens New Nightmare”, it’s the perfect Nancy nightmare trilogy
yes you were so on point about pennywise. That movie felt like a little nightmare on elm street movie. Because Freddy knows ur fears and throws it in ur face lmao
The teacher is the medium/psychic in the "Insidious" franchise. Also, watch "Never Sleep Again" doc for behind the scenes on how they actually made the bed effect scene with Johnny Depp work.
I’m 9 minutes in an still y’all haven’t realized Glenn is a young Johnny Depp 🤦🏻♂️ also that face over the bed when Nancy was sleeping was a sheet of nylon and Robert England pushed his face through it… Love practical effects
some of these dream sequences feel random like the sheep or leaves in the hallway at the school but that's the point. In a dream you never quite know exactly where you are or why something appears
Please do all 80s horror movies not just the slasher ones. I absolutely love the movies from those times. They have a lot of good ones and brings me back to when I was a kid in those years
Wes Craven came up with the idea after reading about Vietnam refugees who died in their sleep in LA in the 70s. One of the men refused to sleep because he was afraid he'd die. When he finally fell asleep he ended up dying in his sleep! Listen to one of his interviews about the movie sometime to find out how he came up with how Freddy looks.
This terrified me as a kid in the 80s. My father made me watch this when I was five. He thought I'd be ok because I loved the terminator and had seen poltergeist. This film ruined me lol. Mainly because my dad would tell me to check under my bed before I go to sleep because Freddy would come up through my bed. My dad would also make spooky noises and scratching sounds as I would walk up the stairs. The worst one would be when he went into the garden and got the clothes line prop. He'd bang it on my bedroom window to wake me up. Man, he thought he was being funny but it gave me the willy's for years. I remember some of the sequels, me and my sister would watch them from behind the sofa. Thanks dad.🤦♂️😂
Yo, this was my parents as well. Scared the hell out of me as a kid but truly it was some of the funnest times of my childhood. My friends, sister and I getting spooked during sleepovers, we still talk and laugh about it to this day.
I watched this movie way too young 😂 same with the original Halloween,The Omen and Childs Play, old movies like that. Also 90s slashers since I was born in 96
Great review! The movie was real... The ending was a dream. It gets explained sorta in the 3rd movie. Well it gives you the opportunity to figure it out. If you want to know more... You will have to watch more. Lmao. If Freddy has you in the dream world and you die in your dream then you will die in real life. Doesn't matter if it's by Freddy's hand or not. Welcome to a nightmare on elm street guys. 😁
I remember that the first time i saw this movie, that same night i dreamed that Freddy Krueger cut my neck, after that i woke up and the first thing i did was check if i was still alive 😭 I saw all the Freddy Krueger movies when i was very little, they were my favorites but they scared me so much
WHa I just realized that the teacher is Lin Shaye from the Insidious movies! I love Freddy! When I was a teen I had a couple of posters of him but mom thought I needed to take them down cause they gave my brother nightmares which fyi he did Not get from them lol so I refused & won! lol Had the pleasure of meeting Robert just before the pandemic, he is such a hoot! & Awe, Johnny was so young! I hope you guys watch some more of his flicks from back in the day like Cry baby & Edward scissorhands! :D
Yo , love this guys . Idk how many yall are gunna do , but I guess all popular classics are texas chainsaw massacre , the omen, the exorcist , phantasm , friday the 13th , Childs play , Hellraiser , Halloween , Children of the Corn , Evil Dead , Original IT , original Candyman , Leperchaun , Puppet master , Wishmaster , Pet cemetary, The shining , etc...
Guys this was an AWESOME REACTION...I love how you jumped at all the effects! The Effects were bad ass! I'd say skip part 2 for now and jump to part 3. Watch part 2 later....
@@ScribblebytesWorldwide Athough, I think the first 3-4 minutes of the movie is great, plus the S&M teacher scene was funny af it doesn't flow with the order of the rest of A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Hey, guys what's up? Hope you're doing well! I'm watching PREDATOR 2 on AMC. Had it DVR'd this morning! It's the best PREDATOR sequel I've ever seen. In fact I saw this on TV when I was 5 years old.
Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy is really a good watch it goes through all the movies from one to the newest version that was redone it gives you the history of how the first movie made New Line.
Yay....the season has BEGUN! *INSERT EVIL LAUGH* 😈 This did a great job of terrifying the life out of me as a kid 🤣 classic, just classic stuff. Great reaction, guys 😊
one of the greatest horror movies ever made, a movie that is intelligent, thought provoking, dark, terrifying & a good movie in its own right irrespective of its core genre.
This is probably my all-time favorite horror movie and I'm glad you guys liked it. I highly recommend Part 3: Dream Warriors and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Whether you do a reaction or not, they're definitely worth seeing.
I was living with my sister when this came out. I started watching this alone one night when she was out, and thought that it was gonna be something stupid.....I had put laundry in to wash/dry and our laundry room was outside, across the decent sized patio. I ended curled up on the couch, my feet OFF the floor, No way was I going to get the laundry, even after the movie went off. That's how my sister found me when she got home around midnight.
Yeah, it's a tough one to beat. Will always be one of my favorites. I would recommend A New Nightmare as a fun follow-up to this one. It is also Wes Craven and the story is fantastic. Glad you guys had fun. Enjoy!
I Am A Big Fan I Am Hoping You'll Watch Some Of My Favorites 1The Blob. 2 Friday The 13th Sequels 3 Nightmare On Elm St Sequels 4 Halloween Sequels 5 Hellraiser sequels but I only recommend on 1-3 lol the rest are shit lol 6 The Damned 7 insidious sequels 8 Subspecies 9 Childs Play Sequels 10 Blair Witch first and 2nd part. these are only some id like to see you react.
Fun fact: 8:34 is actor John Saxon. He co-starred with Bruce Lee in the martial arts film Enter the Dragon in 1973. He was a black belt in Karate and proficient in Judo.
The Lieutenant in this film finally seeing Krueger again after all those years later is probably/most likely thinking how the heck am I going 2 explain this away!
I literally just came to comment that the legend himself plays vecna’s dad lol in stranger things and watching these really brings out the influence they got from these movies
The blood geyser out of the bed was done using a pivoting room that could be turned upside down. They could only do one take but it went wrong as you see gravity pulls the blood off to the side. The blood hit the electrics for the set and started a fire. Freddy grabbed Nancy by the hand and took off so it can be said that Freddy saved Nancy!
this was my first horror film ever. i was a child, maybe ten, found the film while zapping on tv and didn't understand the film at all. nevertheless horror fan ever since 🤣
Hello, new subscriber here from the UK (England). And I have to say this was probably the most enjoyable reaction I've seen to this classic film (and I've seen a lot). It brought back nostalgic memories of the first time a friend and I watched it back in the late 80's. Part 3 had just come out on video so we rented and watched all 3 films over the weekend. As an aside, I can't help but notice that one of you (James) reminds me a bit of the actor Jerry O'Connell. Not so much 80's Jerry O'Connell (best known for 'Stand By Me') but similar to the way he looked in the 90's (in 'Sliders' and 'Scream 2'). I could see you playing his younger brother if they were to go ahead with the Sliders revival/reboot. :)
The Director West Craven and Producer Robert Shay had a big argument over the ending of the movie. Freddy killed those kids out of revenge for the parents killing Freddy.
I saw this movie on tv when i was like 8 years old and my parents where on a BBQ a few Doors down. I couldent sleep for days😂 them one night i went down to The kitchen to get some water and my father had just let our dog out in The backyard and was waiting for it to Come back in, but all I saw was a shadow figure standing in a dark room staring at me! I just ran back up and hid in my bed and couldent sleep for weeks! 15 years later and I still cant look at The room with our backdoor If its dark in there... 😂
36:11 The secret to understanding the movie is the motif of the slo-motion skipping girls. They are the spirits of the girls Freddy killed and you see them right at the beginning of the film as the camera pans to the 4 main characters. That's when the dream starts. They're all already dead and are being tortured by Freddy. That's why the jump rope kids are there at the end to bookend the film. It's all a dream. That's why the acting is so surreal. On a psychological level, the film is about child abuse. These kids suppressed the memories of what Freddy did (parents talked about it, it was all over the media as the mother said) and now that they're teens and starting to become s3xually active, the childhood trauma is coming back. That's why Freddy always does mouth stuff, the tongue and finger gags and of course the knives (phallic imagery) which imply *how* Freddy abused his victims when he was alive. The end of the film symbolises how one can never truly overcome trauma. It will always be with you wherever you go....and that's the real nightmare. You can't have healthy relationships, you can't focus on your work etc. Your life becomes a never-ending nightmare.
I love this film. I saw it in theaters when it came out way back when. The premise was so unique and the theme music is some of the most eerie and haunting ever made, imho. Definitely a classic. And yes, this was Johnny Depp's movie debut.
