There's just something about first time reactions. I've heard this song so many times by now, but seeing the smile on your face and sharing in your amazement, it's almost like I get to hear it for the first time again. I think that's part of why the tool army is so dedicated and love to see first time reactions because we love the band and songs so much, we all wish we could go back and experience them for the first time once more. Front view camera courtesy of ...... ME! Well my company I work for in Boston ( Vic Firth) Dannys such a kind soul and made it a point to talk to each of us who were there to promote our sticks. We had a great view from our suite at TD Garden.

Watching people count along with Tool and try to figure out the measure is one of my favorite pastimes.

A guy named Doug Helvering is a classical composer and he decoded the time signature in the verse amazingly in real time. I'm pretty sure he's right and it's: two measures of 6/8, a measure of 5/8, a measure of 6/8, then two measures of 5/8, which makes the signature.....33/8. Goodness gracious. One of Tool's greatest attributes is that they can make the odd time signatures sound so musical.

Do what you need to do in order to experience these "first times" YOUR way. Tool is different... unique and special. Know this.... loyal Tool fans will understand. Stop to talk. Don't stop to talk. S'all good. It's the fact that you are the genuine article, the real thing. That matters to us. You aren't faking an over the top reaction for a thumbs up. Trust me.... we can tell (most the time). We love Tool... for 144 different reasons. 😊 I SO loved watching this. Thank you. My only regret is that giving you a thumbs up just felt hollow and unsatisfying... not enough. Tool is almost for sure the best band currently on the planet. Danny is a top 5 maybe top 3 drummer all time.

PLEASE remember that you are the one I want to see react and comment. I have heard all of these songs hundreds if not thousands of times. It is your experiencing it that makes it fresh.

Since I usually find out about these things only after they happen: for those who don't know, Danny is touring with a hybrid King Crimson this summer playing their 80's material along with Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Steve Vai.

Great Reaction! I enjoy your commentary. This is one of my favorites off Fear Inoculum, but to be honest, they don't have a bad song. You should try 46 and 2 next.

I think people stop the video to talk about it more to prevent the video from being copyright claimed or whatever, rather than because that's an inherently superior way to do things.

Being in my 70’s, I discovered Tool during the pandemic when I did a deep dive into music I hadn’t heard before from the 90’s on up. They are a spectacular band, aren’t they! Their polyrhythms captured my imagination and then Maynard’s lyrics just astounded me. I see you’ve also reacted to Radiohead……deep respect for those guys. They didn’t grab me line Tool, but respect nonetheless.

Keep in mind he was 58 year-old during this performance!

Carey will be the drummer in the band "Beat" They will be performing King Crimson music from 2 of their albums. Adrian Belew and Tony Levin of King Crimson are also in the band, and Steve Vai will be on guitar.

Tool Army checking in and subscribed! Great video man, I love watching peoples heads explode trying to count it on the first go round. Mainly because it did the same thing to me. Lateralus by Tool was written using the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio. Even down to the syllables being in order. I can't wait for more. P.S. if you want another Golden nugget of a band look up "Nightwish" They are a Symphonic metal band, and they are masters of their craft. I recommend "Ghost Love Score" live at Wakken 2013. With the Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen on vocals. (3rd and current vocalist) I would only do Wakken 2013 until General Gabriel gives you a post on them with backstory and suggested listening. Watched so many reactions to this video and my favorites are the ones that understand time signatures and can appreciate Carey. Not bad for a guy that doesn’t use a clicker!!

Tool's favorite time signature is all of them. But there's usually a 3, 4 or 7 in there somewhere.

Danny Carey is currently on tour with Steve Vai , Adrian Belew and Tony Levin and the band is called Beat. They are playing King Crimson songs from their 80’s catalog. He is truly amazing. His progression as a musician from the debut album through their last one is truly remarkable. He put so much work in to his craft and became one of the best in the business. You are entering a rabbit hole that will melt your mind in the best way imaginable.

The smile on your face as you watched this video is exactly how I feel even after seeing it many times 😊. It's an intoxicating performance. I'm looking forward to your Tool journey and you are not going to be disappointed. Don't miss H, Right in Two, the Grudge, and pretty much anything anyone else suggests because there's never a wrong choice.

5:38 - According to Adam Jones (guitar) the main bass line is 33/16 and I would guess everything else revolves around that.

Throughout the song, the primary time signatures include 5/4 and 6/4, but it also includes sections in 9/8 and other compound meters. This complexity is a testament to Tool's skill in creating dynamic and engaging compositions that challenge traditional musical structures. Danny Carey made a deal with the Devil -- we're not sure what Carey got out of the bargain, but the Devil got drum lessons.

To me, Danny is so busy with with his playing, always doing something different, yet his playing never feels out of place in the song and leaves so much space for vocals/guitars/bass. It's simply amazing to me .

I'm a drummer... I once counted 7/15 and something else..then gave up.. There is just Danny. As a kid cosy Powell, buddy rich and absolutely Stuart Copeland from the police were my inspiration to play the drums..(kinda shows my age 😂). But Danny Carey is a advert to just give up and go home.. I've studied the greats... And he for me know is number one.... What he does just blows my mind and tool as a whole... Greatest drummer walking earth...

This is kinda deep tool, if you want to get into the band i would suggest maybe reacting to some early work and working through it, the band really evolves over time. The early stuff is much heavier/dark than the more current stuff, but they did change bassists some time recording their 3rd album, but it ended up for the best.

You have to watch your back around that Tool army.. When they smell blood in the water it's all over! LOL..

So funny watching music pros trying to figure out the time signatures. Right when they think they got it you see them scowl as they have to start over. Then it switches up again. Good video sir!

Danny makes sure that the last person in that last row of the concert hears each hit. I understand your ideology in regards to stop or not while reacting. But in your last reaction you spoke over so many amazing transitions in the song. The same way you can't stand the ones that stop there's also the ones that can't do like a play by play while hearing the song. But like you said to each their own and you do you bud. While I don't necessarily condone filming of live shows, unfortunately that's what most folks can hope for when they want to watch Tool live. Watch a semi-decent sounding cell phone video of one of the two songs you reacted to and you can get a sense of what an experience they are to see live. I've seen a handful of shows dating back to 1995 (NYE opening for Primus!) and they only get better with age. Cheers!

The main riff goes between 4,5,6 and 7/4. then one bar of 5/8, then 7/4. there's maybe three random bars of 17/8, and 120ish bars of 4/4 in the middle. There might even be a solitary bar of 3/4 in there.

Subscribed. Interested to hear your thoughts on more Tool songs. I thought it might be good for you to listen to their songs in order of album release, which is the way us older Tool fans discovered their music - that way you can hear the evolution of their sound, etc. If this approach interests you, I'd probably start with the Undertow album and react to two of three songs off each album. In the case of this album, I'd recommend Sober, Prison Sex, and the title song Undertow. The only other thing I'd recommend is to not watch the music video versions, and instead just focus on the music. The videos can be really distracting when reacting to a song for the first time, and I think it is fair to say that people would rather watch your videos for your reaction to the music, and not your reaction to the video, because we want to hear the thoughts of someone who understands music at an expert level which you clearly do.

Funny that 'nailed it' came up on the screen as Danny had an off bit but used the fill to recover.

Yeah, I had a hard time counting, but then I focused on the rhythm guitar and nailed it. Sometimes the drums can be the solo instrument. Imagine Carlos Santana playing the drums...

By far, the best reaction video I've ever seen....only one issue...if you stop the video...go back 10 sec or so....(Yeah, im a comment whiner)...haha... anyway... great job... thoroughly enjoyed it

One can’t help but listen and watch TooL without a shiteatin grin across your chops. Impossible not too. The entire band has a talent level that’s unmatched IMO. There’s many killer bands out there of course, but none of them carry the energy levels, creativity, power and precision that TooL MAINTAINS throughout their entire career of playing 30+yrs. Seen many a TooL concert and not once have they ever let off the rocket fuel. Not once! You can also tell they really appreciate their fans and don’t take even one of them for granted…we are truly blessed.

Absolutely bonkers to keep track of that while playing live, I don't know how they do it.
