i sometimes lift my hamster's hide because i have a crippling anxiety that he's dead, but 99.9% of the time it doesn't even wake him up because he builds a *thicc* wall of bedding lmao
SAME. i tWeAk if my hamster doesnt come out to investigate why the cage is being opened. especially if its 8-9pm when shes usually running on her wheel. i just sadly rip the roof off of her to find her giving me a stink eye and i just feel horrible afterwards.
mae marbles same but most of the time when I lift the hide up he is not even asleep he is just laying down btw my mouses name is Cole and I know this was posted a year ago but I don’t care
Please make this a series!! I think it is a really positive message to pet owners that it’s okay and normal to make mistakes but learning from them and improving your pet care is important!! Love this!! We’ve all made mistakes and are leaning from them. Even I did months of research before getting my first hamster and I still made mistakes. Learning and doing better is what matters.
Omg same I make videos unlisted/private if I no longer agree with information in them. Fortunately since my channel is newer that doesn’t happen often but I have a lot of videos I’m not proud of in terms of quality LOL. A huge part of being a pet keeper is acknowledging our mistakes. So I love that you posted this!
Yes and lets hope there are no haters lol they will twist it to something like "you unlist it to seem perfect and hide your mistake" when you're preventing misinformation
I love this idea for a video. You can send a message that it's okay not to be perfect but it's always worth trying to be better! You also get to talk about things that people can improve on without having to hate on anyone 😄
I literally have never heard anywhere that picking up a hamsters hide was bad for them. I felt like I always take good care of my pet and I'm just now realising how distressful that can be. Thanks for this video it's so informative
I’m sure we’ve all made mistakes of various degree. My first hamster was in a critter trail, because I researched everything but cage size. All we can do is move forward. Give your current pets the best possible life and more than what you’re supposed to and it won’t fix what happened, but it’ll encourage others to do the best.
Basic Bedard Yeah that's right. We probably all did horrible things in the past but just give your current Animals way better care and forget the past.
I think making this a series is a great idea! I think I personally could learn a lot by hearing what is wrong in a situation, that’s not super obvious to someone without years of experience, and how to make it better 😊
Thanks for making a point it’s not great to rip off roofs! I explained it too my mom and how it’s not ok. I said these exact words: “how would you like it if you were sleeping and a huge creature would lift the roof off your bedroom and play around with whenever they wanted, even at 2 AM?” Your the best Erin!
I feel like this video helped a lot with education because you call out very common mistakes that people make when you start out with hamsters, which is great because others will learn early!
Your face when past-you said "she's use to it" when lifting her house! Hahaha! I do appreciate you giving past-you such a hard time over bothering animals who are sleeping! It's one of my pet hates too. I feel the same way about my previous care of my pets - just so much cringe! But it's also positive because I can see how much I've grown, and now I'm in a position to better influence new pet keepers. What can be frustrating is when I'm speaking to someone who I realise is representing me as a teenager, and all I can think is that once that person has matured they'll perhaps approach their care with less ego and more collaboratively.
I’m really touched by your honesty. I’ve owned many small pets and I have made mistakes as I’m sure many other people have and it’s ‘nice’ if that’s the right word, to see that PetTubers themselves have made mistakes and are honest about it. I’ve always thought that PetTubers are so perfect and that they’ve never done anything wrong and it always made me assume they’ve never made mistakes. Thank you for showing us this. It’s given the audience a way more realistic side of owning pets and that no one is perfect. As long as people correct their mistakes then it’s fine ❤️
I had my hamster in a tiny cage, after I found your channel I got an IKEA bin with tons of room to walk around and deep enough to burrow nicely, like double the Kiku and Jeni bin. And I did rip the roof off sometimes… but I learnt from that lol. I don’t have hamsters anymore but I’d like to have one again, but I don’t have the space to put the bin back so I’ll just have to be patient.
* Erin criticizing her first bin cage lifting the house and gravel * when I was 8 my mom got my any animal I asked for and then had nothing to do with it. I put them in critter trails. I saw a video saying they needed tanks so I got a 40 gal, kept my hamster in it with zero bedding other than a pinch under the hide ( s ). Also had a 5 inch wheel for a Syrian. And the bedding in the critter trails was cedar. I remember wanting to give them turns so every week I would put the one in the 40 gal in the critter trail and switch vise versa ( not changing the bedding ) Literally the most stress ever for hams. I also remember giving my Syrian males “ play dates “ in my Barbie dream house, and I thought their fighting was them play wrestling. I also remember getting some guinea pigs, trying to breed the one at 8 years old while feeding them little to no hay and Walmart pellets. The guinea pig gave birth premature, ate her stillborn babies then died. And then I tried to breed my Syrian with my dwarf and it killed my dwarf. Not to mention it was a male female dwarf pair I had, and I put the Syrian in with the female WHILE the male was in the cage aswell. So yeah I probably top all of your guys old animal care. But having that guilt and regret I now work at and partially own a rescue center for many small animals. And my personal hams all have 1,500 sq inches of floor space, 12 inch deep bedding, huge sand areas and amazing enriching cages. Everyone learns from their mistakes. While it sucks five and six year olds are driven by electronics these days I also feel it helps many hamsters etc due to the fact they can look up and see hamster care ❤️ which I could not really do when I was taking such bad care of mine as a kid.
Love the video! Could you do a video on how you handle your cats, dogs and small animals living together and getting along well? I mean, I've never seen your dogs or cats stressing you hamsters out or fighting amongst each other! Have a wonderful wednesday :)
Such a great idea for a video, reflecting on mistakes or admitting to them is something people try not to do but it is so important to learn and grow from this sort of thing. Every pet owner should be doing this in order to continue improving our care.
I’ve had my first hammie he was a Syrian his name was buttons I loved him he was a wild hamster for sure he passed away on 15th January 2021 I got him a day after my birthday but I really wish my parent would listen to correct care but mistakes show as we grow as long as you fix or try to fix it be proud as long as you gave love ❤️💕^👄 v
I love seeing hamster RU-vidrs go through their old bad care lol because people love to make it seem like they make them self seem perfect & know it alls & no, it takes making many mistakes to LEARN & then share what you Learn with others !
I don't think I'm being too hard, although hamster YT channels didn't really exist back then I still had access to a wealth of information on forums and by this point I'd been keeping hamsters for over 6 months. I really had no excuse for my ignorance.
Good for changing! If I need to get my mouse up for whatever reason, I usually just rustle the bedding gently around the hut, or move the cage around a bit so he wakes up. I’d only pull the hide off if I expected an emergency I.e. so blood, or unusually tuffs or maybe something I’m not thinking of, but so far that’s never happened!
Just when I didn’t think I could love you anymore - I find this 😍 Perfect example of humility and the ability to laugh at one’s self! It’s amazing to see how far you actually came, you didn’t start of perfect!? 😅🌸
I remember when I was in fifth grade, my neighbors had two hamsters that were put in tiny tails cages. I thought it was ok at the time, till those hammies died a month later. Fast forward to today, now I know why...
This video came out a long time ago but, boy do I relate. My first pet that I got in 3rd grade was a parakeet. If you don't know anything about birds let me tell you- parrots and yes, even parakeets, need SO much space, and time, and insane amounts of enrichment. Safe to say small child me did not provide those things, and I literally have nightmares about her...
Ah the “I was a horrible animal mom” thro back. I’m still so so ashamed of how I cared for my animals when I was a kid, my first hamster was in a tiny plastic aquarium. Like 10cm by 30cm, after my first hamster died my second hamster also lived in there until my uncle lost her well watching her. I was 5 wen I got my first hamster and it was before internet, I sadly couldn’t know any better. Don’t be so hard on your self, you improve so much and that’s what’s it all about 😁
I enjoyed watching your reaction to past videos! I think it's normal to be critical of ourselves for not knowing better.. I'm glad you were able to learn from your mistakes!! I think must of us have been there :)
Oh dear. At least you have learned from your mistakes and got better at being a hamster mom. Sadly, so many people don't, so kudos to you for being willing to change. Happy New year, by the way. Looking forward to seeing whatever you do next! ❤️Ya!
what a great idea for a video! When I first started watching your videos I went back and watched some of your old ones (not 2011 ones but older) and was surprised by how much your channel has changed. It has been great to see you grow in confidence and in your animal care! And I think we all cringe at our teenage selves...you are brave to face that head on!
Happy 1000th video Erin!! That is an absolutely mind-blowing achievement. Well done! I would love more of these videos: it was really fun to watch, and I think it is cool to see where you started, so you can really realise how far you've come! Have a lovely day! :D
Hi, this is kind of off topic, but one time at my school, some kids were watching America’s Got Talent videos, and the robo hamster in my class came out of her hideout, and sat in her food bowl to watch it too, and I know she was watching it, because after the video was over, she went back into her hideout.
I would love to see a series on you reacting to old videos. One great thing about watching old videos is you can see how far you've come in hamster care.
I remember when I was younger and I was stupid I once pullled the roof of my hammys house and she properly hissed at me so I mean it knocked a bit of sense into me
everyone makes mistakes when they first get a hamster. luckily we learn from our mistakes and research and we become better owners☺️ luckily there’s loads more information now on hamsters to stop bad care🐹
Seeing your mistakes doesn't outweigh the TONS of expert information you give on this channel. This video was actually very helpful to see that we grow as hamster owners. You did your best at the time. I'd like to see more of your old videos. I've followed your channel for years and today is a very big day for me. In a few hours I'm getting my very first hamster. A female robo! I'm so excited!
I've never had hamsters but going back to when I had my first rabbit, boy I knew nothing! I sure did learn so much. I think this video shared that even the best of people have to start somewhere! :) absolutely love your hamsters and you 😊
Hi don't want to be rude but I really am wondering why you don't celebrate Christmas don't het me wrong I still love Erin and am subscribed I'm just curious
We learn from our mistakes...….. At least you have the guts to admit you were wrong and are fixing things. Also, I cried laughing when you put that squeak noise over your swears! I've been watching a lot of Hamster videos over the last year because I want to eventually own one. I had plans on getting one for myself for Christmas, but we lost our home with Hurricane Florence and thus life hasn't allowed me a good few months. Your video's are very informative and I respect you and your knowledge sharing greatly. Thanks for helping me make wise decisions about the type of hamster I want and how to give them a happy home.
Erin I would like to say... you are the one which introduced me to small animals and I now absolutely adore mice (i cant get hamsters in my country) You taught me so so much THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, Erin.. I was just as bad and that was only about 8 months ago unfortunately, I've watched more videos and read more stuff so now I'm not torturing my mice. I did the exact same thing of lifting the den. I have to mention I am 11, not 17 though. I believe our old cage was too small- The one I have now isn't huge either. I'm always freaking out when I see your massive cage with so many toys? I don't have a lot of toys because they don't fit in there. After watching some more cage tours I'm going to visit the pet store... I only have a den, a water bottle, a food bowl, 2 toilet paper rolls downstairs (their den, food bowl and wheel are on these cage bars that are higher up, the den is filled with cotton) and then I have a bunch of these bird toys that hang from the top. Oh, and a mineral stone. I recently added an empty egg cardboard box in there. They love it. But still, I don't have your huge toys and I really wish they would fit in there oh my gosh.. I don't think I can even bury any secret dens in there. I'm surprised my mice aren't dead out of boredom. Edit: I completely forgot this tube made out of cardboard with grass or hay or something on it so they love to chew on that..
Okay if I try to put my mindset to teenage Erin my argument would be "but gravels are safe for them, they dig it sometimes so they must like it and it's clean / washable" Probably :p Even if that's entirely wrong lol
Boy do I feel you. Looking back at my pet care ideas when I was a kid/teen makes me want to invent time machine just so I can go back and slap myself. I wish I had Internet back then. Sigh.
Thank you for your video! I’m kind of a new hamster owner, had one when I was a little kid but that was at least 20 years ago soo...and me and my boyfriend just got an Syrian hamster and we already know that his cage is to small so we are gonna buy him a bigger one when we can. And you just learned me something, we have noticed that he stopped use his house and now I know why, we don’t let him be alone in there, we often wake him up in there and takes his house away. 😨😨 omg, I feel soo bad! So we finna get him a new house tomorrow (like a new start) 😂 and in that house, we gonna leave him alone. I’m gonna keep watch your videos!
ur cat in the background is so cute sorry it’s off topic btw my hamster was fully tamed after about 3 or 2 months, I was too scared to do any activities with her than stroke her and feed her treeats but she would hear my voice often and when I held her she was quite fine with it
I am jelly cuz you have hamsters... #crazysiblinglife Jk, SAY HI TO THE HAMMIES PLEEASE! Oh, I was sick for a week... And binge watched your channel lol!
I'd say this is a nice example of an expert having learned from many many mistakes along with research. You seem like the kinda person that if given the oppurtunity to travel back in time would first thing slap their past self in the face and lecture them XD Something I can relate to so damn bad.
I need to stop peeking under my hamsters house lol. They’ve given me anxiety issues with their escaping antics so if I don’t hear them running in the morning I always peek under and check they are ok before I go to work 😂. I’ve actually got a camera for one of them so that works well I just check if he’s ok but I need to get one for the other two 😫
hi Erin I just had to tell you I've been watching your posts and they are awesome you are an amazing knowledgeable and bubbly person your also an amazing presenter I've learnt so much I love your diy posts they are so so good keep the posts coming I think you will truly go far thanx heeps paula England
Thankfully I'm not crazy for thinking the same thing about the lifting-houses and hides up. I only lift mine up when I have to check if he's even breathing, because Shamu barely moves when he breathes and it's just hard to tell if he's okay or not.
