As pointed out by a viewer, the setup at 5:19 looks like it has the UV shining through glass - this may prevent a lot of UVB from entering the tank, so please avoid doing this. Also if you like these kinds of videos, please like, share and comment, it helps with the algorithm and shows me that you guys want to see more of these videos 🤗🤗
Yeah the dollar a gallon tank is only if there's a difference of course but no lid the little separate cost like I think it would be a better deal if it was like live in tank
I’m Alex from the video 👋, I just now saw the video today some how but the tank is a 20 gallon but I’ve got a lot more decorations and some different hides now and it looks a lot better, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for this - it's really helpful of you to highlight where people aren't doing things quite right. There's no shame in getting things wrong if you learn from your mistakes! I've been supplementing D3 because I've never seen my leo out when the UVB is on, but like you say maybe that's because she's being supplemented. I'll give the Revitalise powder a go.
I just got a baby leopard gecko named spike! He’s amazing! I feed him crickets mealworms and wax worms mealworms and wax worms are treats tho he’s in a 20 gallon terrarium so don’t worry I did plenty of research. And I keep doing more research to make sure I’m not doing anything wrong.
Thanks for the 4 likes😊 i’ve never even gotten 2 likes before🥲 thank you. Here’s a cool song if you like anime it’s called Nightcore - legends never die. You can look that up on RU-vid if you want🙃
Your channel and the help from other reptile keeps actually SAVED my geckos life. As I said before you helped me convince parents to get leopard gecko, but I didn’t do all the proper research. I got great ideas and stuff from your channel but I also ventured off other places including petco…. And I got a small 20gallon tank with 2 hides and ONLY mealworms as food. Also, I used eco earth which I never knew he would eat and cause problems. After coming back to your channel I did the proper care research and chatted with other reptile keepers. I upgraded my tank to a 40gal low and gave 3 hides as well as paper towel and a small glass with proper dirt in it for shedding. I also started feeding crickets after watching your food video which for some reason CHANGED EVERYTHING. He started coming out more, sleeping outside hides, and getting more comfortable around me. He had issue with shed before that and I watched your stuck shed removal video and now he’s doing MUCH better. Thank you so much I really appreciate the help you give new owners like me. Keep going on 👍
It’s great that you’ve improved your care! I highly recommend switching to a suitable loose substrate though, digging enrichment is very beneficial for them. A soil/playsand mix is the cheapest option but you can also use premade mixes like terra Sahara or Arcadia earth mix arid. I’d also offer more variety in his diet if possible. Roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Super worms and hornworms can be fed occasionally :)
I have found that goove thermometer’s are amazing they tell you the heat and humidity and the highest it’s been and lowest it’s been all day. They also have an app that lets you track it over the week or so forth.
I got my 6 week old leopard gecko about 6 days ago. He hasn’t basked at all since I’ve gotten him. Now I have seen him climb into his moist hide and his on top of his cool hide at night. But I have never seen him bask he is always sleeping in his warm hide the whole day until it’s time to hunt for his food
This was great thank you . Am very nervous about shairing my full set up for my baby gecko we do have a lot of slate tho n cork bark with coconut beding and moss with lots of hides
The decor sounds great! I recommend switching to a different substrate though, coconut fibre tends to be dusty and hard on their joints. A soil/playsand mix would be better :)
I need some advice as to how to start handling my baby gargoyle gecko. I’ve estimated him to be about 3 months old, since he has the bumps on his head. He usually sleeps on the side/back of a big piece of cork bark in his tank (5 gal Exo terra) and I was wondering if I should remove it to handle him?
@@nightinggale6470 and this is why I hate going to leave comments. The original lemon frosts we're heavily inbred so they had genetic issues. Those were bad, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't support them. It's literally impossible for the morph to get better unless we do something. Breeders like Luna geckos and Geeky Gecko Creations are outcrossing the LF to pure bloodlines and getting rid of the issues. They're separating the good from the bad rather than calling it a lost cause and calling it a bad morph period
Hey, I don't know if you'll see this but I have a question. Should I be taking my Leopard gecko in for vet visits? I've looked at several websites and can't get a consistent answer. Do you recommend it? Thanks, love your content :)
Thanks! I just wish more people would click on the videos 🙈 it gives me an idea of whether or not to make more lol So everyone, please like, comment and share if you can :D
I had to throw away my mealworms recently and my gecko hasn't had a treat in a while so I bought waxworks, in a few days she'll try her first ever wax worm 🤩🤩
You leave it on all the time, I’m not sure of the specifics but I turn my thermostat down at night, for the basking spot it’ll be 90-95 Fahrenheit during the day and I do around 86-90 at night, just to make sure he gets enough belly heat to digest his food. Good luck with getting your gecko! Don’t worry, it’ll be confusing any worrying at first but you’ll get the hang of it after the first month or two, just make sure to keep up with all the good habits you’ll be making! You got this!
Turning it off at night is perfectly fine though (assuming your house stays around normal room temps and not too cold). A temperature drop at night is natural.
I highly recommend using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat instead, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs! The levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength). As mentioned by Joey, a temperature drop at night is fine :)
So... I just throw the crickets in their encloser when they get here because they take quit awhile and they might die quickly. Should I stop throwing them in? They eat when they need. But I also occasionally have frozen meal worms some days
Uneaten crickets should ideally be removed from the enclosure because they can bite at the gecko. Keep the crickets in their own container and gutload them with veggies. I’d also look into other feeders. Live roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Super worms and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better. Feed live insects, not frozen ones.
idk if you will see this but if you do I have three leopard geckos and I have them on paper towels. i cant get earth mix arid here cause I live in the US. what is the best substrate from the US?
I got some Zoomed clay for the bottom it is exactly like their natural environment I got this from Amazon, also paper towels are a great option as well! :3
OMG can you please do a video on 2 level enclosures, it would mean so much to me. Im currently designing blueprint new ideas for all my geckos. im so excited. ☺
My leopard gecko name is Yoshi his growth is offend slow he is almost a year old and is still pretty small I don’t wanna get freaked out but wanna see if you can help?
No, heat lamps on glass can crack it. It needs to be either on a mesh lid or in the enclosure with a guard. And halogen flood bulbs connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat are actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs, the levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).
I have a heat mat on the side of my Leo’s tank as well as a heat lamp right above it. As long as the hot side isn’t getting too hot it should be fine. Don’t put the heat mat on the bottom on the tank, they could burn their bellies!
Heat mats are 100% unnecessary. I recommend using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat, they’re more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).
I have a 10 gallon starter tank (I'm getting a bigger one probably next week when i get paid), 2 large plants, a log hide on the hot spot above the heat mat, and stack rocks made into a cool hide on the cool side. I also have a lamp on the hot side. I have a bowl to put her worms on to prevent impaction, and a water bowl. I use eco earth for her substrate and mist the terrarium every few days. I don't know how old she is (they never told me) but she's a juvenile about 6-6.5". I feed her mainly mealworms and crickets, and i give her waxworms as a treat. Her name is Cookie :D Edit: she looks on the younger side, idk, but she might end up being bigger than the average female if she's already 6-6.5" Update: i got her a 40 gallon tank!!
It’s great that you got a 40 gallon, make sure you fill it up with plenty of clutter and plant coverage! Just some advice: eco earth isn’t the best substrate since it’s unnatural, dusty, and can be hard on their joints. A soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix would be best. A heat mat isn’t necessary with a properly setup heat lamp, but if you keep the heat mat, make sure it’s plugged into a thermostat to regulate the temperature. A temperature gun is best for measuring surface temps. A humid hide would be beneficial. It’d also be a good idea to add more variety to her diet if possible. Live roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Super worms and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better :)
5:19. It seems to me like the UV bulb is on glass right? That would mean barely any UVB will be able to penetrate. UVB doesn't go through glass (maybe in really small amounts but that is so little it's negligible).
I have a question I just got a leopard gecko and I am going to provide a 4 watt heat pad in a 10 gal glass tank, I have a thermostat to monitor the heat at a suitable level. am I able to put the heat pad inside the tank and if so do I need to put substrate or something to separate the heat-mat from the geckos skin. Or could the gecko just chill directly on top of the heat pad
Hey, loved the video! Where can I upload pictures of my tank for you to react to? I'd love to get some feedback from you!! Anyway, great video, and I love that you're helping people improve their setups!!
Currently I have my albino gecko in a 20 gal tank with a warm hide, cool hide, and moist hide. He also has a piece of drift wood, a hammock, and vines to climb on. He has a deep heat projector with a thermostat. His substrate is paper towel. Is there anything I can do to upgrade his substrate (or anything else)? I plan on getting him a 40 gallon eventually.
Sounds good! The only recommendation I have is to switch to a suitable loose substrate mix, digging enrichment is very beneficial for them. Good options include a mix that’s 60% manure-free potting soil and 40% playsand (or a soil/sand/clay mix), Arcadia earth mix arid, or Terra Sahara from the bio dude. Try to get soil that doesn’t contain peat moss, since peat moss substrates are harmful to the environment. Timberline is a good brand.
Hi! I use coco fibre for my Tank and Milo likes to kind of swoop it away in his cave, which leaves him with only glass, it’s either to get closer to the heating thing (I forgot what it’s called) or he doesn’t likes the Coco fibre? Is this normal?
Coconut fibre isn’t a great substrate. It’s unnatural, tends to be dusty when dry, and is hard on their joints. A soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix would be ideal. And if you’re using under tank heating: A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
My friend gave me her leopard gecko a few weeks ago, he is 1 years old. How would you recommend I go about handling him? I’ve gotten him to where he will come out when I’m around and he will lick my hand, but I don’t want to spook him trying to pick him up and handle him, I’ve watched a lot of your handling videos, I just wasn’t sure if the same would go for a gecko who wasn’t a baby when you get them..
I’m taming a baby leopard gecko right now :) Putting your hand inside and just letting them come up to you and be curious is a great start. For my gecko personally, after a few weeks of doing this he eventually would walk onto my hand himself. I also will put my hand flat out like right under his face and by his front feet to kind of slowly nudge and encourage him to step forward onto me. Hope that helps!
You mean a halogen? PAR30 or PAR38 would be ideal. It can be higher than 50w as long as you have a dimmer or dimming thermostat to regulate the temperature. You could just use halogens from a hardware store.
Glass blocks UVB, so the sunlight isn’t doing anything other than giving them a day/night cycle. The tank could also overheat in direct sunlight. I’d definitely get a PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat for heating during the day (most natural and beneficial option) and a tube UVB bulb.
Herpstat 1. They’re a little spendy but worth every penny. They have day/night ramping on an internal clock, super long probe length, extremely accurate, has lots of extra options, and you can fit a humidity probe into it later if you decide to purchase those extra things. My recommendation for a US thermostat.
I recommend using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat instead, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs! The levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength) :)
Have U any Tips for me? I want to own a Gecko, but my Parents Say i wouldn't do anything with them and i have already Guinea pigs, so i dont have to geht Them😭
You could try going to a zoo or reptile shop and asking them if you or your parents could handle some geckos. Other options include having an experienced keeper tell them how interactive a gecko can be
You could also volunteer to do extra chores or cleaning or see if you can earn any pocket money by doing those chores or if you are old enough to have someone hire you to work
Show your parents these videos and show them how much research you are doing in order to be ready to get a gecko. Also being more willing to help around the house/do chores to show them your prepared to go to extra lengths to get one.
Hey! Getting a Leo soon and I'm so excited, though I was just wondering of it is better for the gecko, and will get it to move around the tank more, if I get a ceramic heat emitter instead of heat meat? With a ceramic heat emitter, should I also use a heat mat? Finally, what would the gecko generally prefer? Thank you so much :)
Ceramic heat emitters and heat mats are not adequate primary heat sources. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats and CHEs. Whereas heat mats and CHEs only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
So I was at petsmart and I wanted to get my leopard gecko a light. (My room dark and I wanted to get him a light so I can have a day time night time with him) well the coworker gave me a bearded dragon basking light. She said this is what I use for my leopard gecko and left. I then go to the cash register and she looks over and see I switch the light out. She looks at her co worker and says that not what I would use but it not my pet in a cocky voice. I wanted to snap back saying a leopard gecko needs a heating Matt because there not even really out for the day not a bearded dragon basking bulb. Anyways I got really upset and uncomfortable from the situation. So I never went back to that petsmart.
You’ve been misinformed. Leopard geckos do not need heat mats. In fact, they’re not an adequate heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
@@nightinggale6470 yeah true !! mine is a juvenile and on loose substrate, but i mean like BABY babies, like just hatched to a month old type of babies
he is doing the uv wrong by having the light shine through glass and only 30% of good light shines through glass wich leaves 70% bad light inside the enclosure
@@nightinggale6470 I mean I've never seen them that cheap, I just bought a 25 gallon there for 135 dollars. I don't think I'd trust one that's $1 a gallon anyway.
@@destinyhntr here in Canada we don’t have Petco, so I wouldn’t know from personal experience. I’ve just heard a lot about petco sometimes having $1/gallon sales, up to a certain size.
I really need help :( I've been watching gecko vids for the past 4 hours but can't seem to find anything, I kinda think my leopard gecko has crypto but I'm not too sure because she doesn't likes to eat anymore :( She hasn't ate in a month I thought she wanted a break. She only drinks water and once I was seeing her stomach I thought I saw her organs and thought it was really cool until today that I realized it's been long since my gecko ate and found out about crypto please help me :(
Always go to a good reptile specific vet when you expect something's wrong with an animal's health! No one can tell you what's going on from this story alone.
Yes go to a reptile vet, they will send of a faecal sample. You usually have to pay extra to also test for Crypto as the standard test usually only detects other parasites. It's worth a shot as it's the only way you'll get answers as to what is up with your gecko.
I’m sorry Lovato but I can’t believe how stupid that sounds, she said “I realized that’s bad” so she built another tank just to buy another and co-hab again 🤦
Hey 👋. Yesterday I downloaded a picture and video of my first ever bio-active for my crested Gecko. I would love your opinion. It’s the only thing I have posted to this channel so really easy to find. I also sent a picture to your Instagram. Love your channel
