Hi! This is Stephanie! My tank was the 2nd one in your vid :) Thank you for featuring it! The sand in Charlie's tank is Caribsea Super Naturals sand in Sunset Gold. I also love how it looks! Since that those pics, I have taken out the small platform under the basking box and some of the smaller pieces of drift wood to give him a little more space. :)
7:02 Carlos from LA,CA is my husband. I just want to thank you for featuring our tank on your video. He has been very dedicated to our 7 year old turtle. We also have a 20 gallon tank prepared for a musk turtle but we haven't had any luck finding one. Anyway, we really enjoy your channel.😊
THANK YOU, SOL! Thank you for reviewing my tank! My name is pronounced 'm-eye-ra' but I get 'm-ee-ra' a lot lmao. I'm getting a 55 gallon for Ray in a few days so I'm so excited! Ray is doing good! I agree that he is a beautiful turtle 🐢
Thank you so much for featuring my 90 gallon tank (the 4th one). ☺️ The basking area is indeed a planter. At first I drilled small holes in it for fishes to hide, but recently I’ve made bigger holes so my turtle could have more space to swim. And it’s a bottle brush!! 😂 I saw on my Facebook turtle group that a lot of owners use this so the turtle can scratch herself which helps with scrutes. Not sure Kauai understands the concept yet but I’m sure it will come. 😅
I have an outdoor 50 gal RES tank and it GOT GREEN! I have 2 top filter box and 1 pump. The water goes in the first box with submersible UV bulb, then it drops to the second box with filter floss, lava rocks, ceramic balls and pothos plant. The UV took care of the green water! It cleared up overnight. I regularly scrape the algae on the glass, fishnet out the big chunks and filter floss takes care of the smaller algae and waste. My baby is 3 yrs old now 😍
@ashleymoore9364 hey sorry to crash your comment but I am currently days away from getting my first map and I can't decide between Mississippi and Ouachita! I am using a 40 gallon breeder and will just be housing 1 turtle! I am wanting a friendly turtle that is active in swimming and ok with being held. Also needs to be small enough at max size to be ok alone in 40 gallon breeder. Please let me know if you any suggestions between the two! Thanks in advance!
how do you keep above the tank basking platforms when your tank needs a top? I want to maximize swim space for my turtle but we have cats in the house so I don't want to leave my turtle uncovered.
Maybe you can help me as I can't find a ton of information or guidance. I have a northern map turtle that was given to me by a friend that could no longer care for it. He has severe shell damage, and his shell has curved upwards around the edges. I immediately took him to the vet she gave me some calcium to give him and stated that his shell would never get better but there are things I can do to make him more comfortable. I set him up in a 20 gal tank with a basic 20gal filter, basking rock, UV light and basking light. His water is heated to 80 degrees f. I just feel awful for him and don't know how else I can help to make sure he's comfortable. He eats pellets currently and I plan to get some live aquatic plants (he wont take to veggies or fruits) as I'm worried a high protein diet will make his shell worse. Any tips or advice would be great.
Okay learning so many things with all this! My map turtle is also named spike and I have him in a 120 gallon. I need ideas for his above tank basking area and also just learned about wavemakers! So looking Into that! I'm trying to shop for stands to support 150-180 tanks. It seems you have to build your own!
i was going to submit my 240 gallon turtle tank, but couldn't due to a issue with uploading, so i decided to use the images i took to make some really nice channel art for my channel😆😅
Hi I am the last tank in this video. The basking area is the Thrive Turtle Elevated basking loft from Petsmart. I also modded it by adding some reptile carpet with zip ties so it made the ramp easier for the turtle to climb, and the floor safer so his claws wouldn't get stuck in the mesh.
I rescued a big northern map turtle from the road today. Very heavy traffic. It would have gotten run over if I hadn't grabbed it. It must have been nearly 11 inches long. Released it back into a nearby pond.
I am planning on getting a male map turtle but I don’t want a tank under 20 gallons but I also don’t want to get 40 gallon. So is there any good tank sizes?
Fyi, Texas map turtles are one of the smaller species of map turtles (if not the smallest); females on average are 5 to 6" SCL and males are 3 to 4" SCL. So that male Texas map is not stunted at all.
This is true! The person didn't state the exact species though, just the that _name_ is Tex...he could very well be a Texas map but I prefer not to assume :)
What types of wood do you use that prevents the water from turning brown? I’ve soaked driftwood and mopani for a month and tannins still leach from the wood.
Try some Seachem Purigen in your filter. Also make sure you have some very fine mechanical filtration. Filter pads or polyfil work great for it. In addition to that, make sure you're using either an air pump or a wave maker to get your water moving. It helps make your filter more effective.
My Ouchita Map turtle start eating green since it was 1 inch SCL, and he (i think he is a boy, but I'm not 100% sure since he is only 2.5 inch now) keep doing that till now. He always finish every green i put in his tank, compared to my 10 inch RES who for some reason doesn't like green at all 😅.
Hi I have a map turtle we have the dock for him to go on but he isn’t going on it often so we have to take him out of our tank in the night so he can sleep do you have a solution
I wouldn't remove the turtle at night. They can hold their breath for extended periods of time and if they want to get out of the water, they will. It's possible that you're stressing them out more by moving them every night! best of luck!
Meanwhile me with No filter🤭 I mean I’m new to this whole turtle thing and I have a baby turtle northern map turtle in an aquarium of 30 liters, but only half full of water, I have a heater, a uvb, she (I hope it’s a she because her name is Shella and I will not change it) has a basking area in the aquarium and many small rocks on the bottom. I asked at the pet shop if I need a filter and they said that a filter wouldn’t stand up to the waste and that I should use those small rocks and the waste will go under and that she will not swim in her own mess. Also she likes to eat her own mess. I do feed her! She has 5 different types of food (small fish, pallet, some very small balls, lyophilized heart and those small shrimp from Gammarus). I love her very much and it’s a joy for me when she sees me and comes to the surface (or she hides behind the heater, it’s a complicated relationship). I’m thinking if I should get a filter or not (I already invested very much in her setup and if it’s possible I wouldn’t want to make another purchase) and I don’t know exactly how a filter works and what to change or anything about a filter. The water it’s clear and it doesn’t smell. I use 2 solutions for the water, one for chlorine and the second for that disgusting slime from above the water. Please don’t judge a poor turtle mother if I’m in the wrong😢 I have her for 2 months already and she seems happy and I’m very happy that I got her
@@chemicalstorm I used it for Painted Turtles too and Chinese softshells…they loved it. Even from 20 years ago. Raw hamburger and pork too but Gotta clean water cause leaves oil etc. Of course I vary with commercial feed. They love earthworms and dried shrimp too..I’m not an expert but that’s what I noticed
I use an fx4 and an fx2 in one tank. Why 2 filters instead of just 1 fx6? Because if one filter breaks, atleast I have the other while I replace the one. When I set up the 200g I will likely have a large sump.
Hi turtle girl! I just have another question do turtles need more like I have already some basking light, Filter, And have the right sized tank ( I don’t use heater cause I live in a tropical place ) please I need my turtle to be healthy I need answer please 🥺
I am currently days away from getting my first map and I can't decide between Mississippi and Ouachita! I am using a 40 gallon breeder and will just be housing 1 turtle! Hi! I love watching your turtle videos, but I have a question. I recently had to get rid of my turtles due to that they are not allowed in my apartment,, and so now I want to convert my 40gallon tank into a fish tank and move my oranda goldfish to the tank, how can or what do I need to convert it
You could just clean out the tank, clean out the filtration, make it unheated, remove the basking area, and then you'd just basically just have a fish tank instead of a turtle tank!
I have a turtle from my little brother and I'm not sure what kind he is but he had him in a batta tank how would I know if his growth is stunted and I would love to send photo of tank and need pointers for cleaning and which fish to put with it he is eating almost all of them eventually
My house is getting bombed for fleas and I have a turtle with fish, I searched up what to do with fish it says to put a garbage bag over the tank and tape it but I don’t know if there will be enough air for the turtle what do you think.
What should i do !? My baby turtle(1.5 month old) doesn't like turtle food he's just mad about worms n shrimps he eats 3times a day How can i make him eat turtle food
Stop feeding the shrimp and worms for a few days. Then take the pellets and soak them in some water from a can of tuna. That should make them smell yummy and he should eat them. Do that for a few days then he should start eating the pellets without the tuna water. I found this tip online when my turtle was a hatchling and wouldn't eat her pellets only would eat the dried shrimp. Hope this helps.
I was thinking of getting my map turtle some sand for his substrate. I did research into it and I saw that it wasn’t very good for them. He also eats everything. What are your thoughts on getting him sand for his substrate
Recommend you grabbing a bag of pond rocks from home depot they are 5 dollars you let them soak in the tub with bleach and water than hand rinse and scrub each rock they look beautiful and my turtles love them
I say you could, but my map turtle (the first tank in the vid) got to 3 inches in 1 year, so if you can afford at least a 29 gallon, that would be best. If you do decide to use a 20 gallon, I'd upgrade earlier than a year :)
@@TheTurtleGirl Thanks for the reply! I have thought about an algae eater before. I have an 8 inch red ear slider. She eats on everything so sadly I only have a few things in the tank for her.(bare bottom) I was worried she'd kill the algae eater. I plan on upgrading the tank when I can. She is in a 40gal tank with the water to the top with an above tank basking area. I have the Fluval 307 filter for her. (I rescued her from someone that had her in a 20 gal tank in 5 inches of water.) So hearing all that, any other suggestions? I wish I could send you a pic. Not such how to go about doing that. Thanks again...Your knowledge is amazing on these little guys.
You are wrong. Yes, the females can lay eggs WITHOUT a male pair, but they will not be fertile. (Which means it’s impossible for the egg to hatch.) You just throw it away. It can’t hatch. But if you do have a male in there, the egg can hatch.
