Fun Fact: Esther was only suppose to be a guest in 1 episode but the rating was so high for that episode that they decided to give her more screen time and then made her a permanent character.
I read that years ago and I was surprised because she played the role so well. Did you know that Esther and Donna, Fred's girlfriend, were sisters in real life? Esther was almost 10 years older than her.
@smartguyray3372 that's not true Lynn Hamilton Donna was not related to Lawanda Page and Ester was brought in by Roxx cause he didn't get along with Bea Richards who played Aunt Ethel it had nothing to do with ratings
As an older baby boomer, I remember watching these shows as a teenager. They were funny then and they are still funny today. Watching you young guys enjoy them just as much as I did is a real treat.
@@HD-er2cq I commented on the original comment but yours just came up and I have to do the same with yours because I literally just busted out laughing at my desk thank you for that 😊
My brother was born when I was watching this in 1979. 😂 Did you know that Red Foxx and "Ester" were best friends in high school. He said without her, he wasn't doing the show. Very interesting fact 🎉
The fact that you guys even recognized Rob Reiner that young is pretty damn impressive. I grew up watching All in the Family, so watched his career go from there. 99% of younger people today would never even have even caught that it was him. Give yourselves trivia bonus points.
Sheldn. Remember him from THE ODD COUPLE? Sheldn, not Sheldon, because in one episode he explained that the hospital misspelled his name when making his birth certificate.😅
"The Lord gave you that face, and you stuck with it!" I was a lad the first time I saw that episode ... I had never seen my mother laugh so hard at something on tv before.
I loved this show growing up! Wonderful to see a new generation appreciating classic comedies & comedians! Back in the day when stores were closed on Sundays, random relatives “would come to call” whether they got along family members they were visiting or not! I hadn’t thought of this in years but my Dad had a female cousin who would randomly visit who he really didn’t like very much & they would trade insults like this back & forth, it was hysterical! 😅😂
"Fred Sanford In Traffic Court" is a scene you've got to see. Fred has some strong opinions, the judge sets him straight, and Fred has a comeback. Adult language was not a big deal on primetime television in the 1970s...
Norman Milton Lear (born July 27, 1922) is an American actor, screenwriter and producer who has produced, written, created or developed over 100 shows. Norman Lear produced or co-produced the following classic sitcoms: All in the Family Sanford and Son Maude Good Times The Jeffersons One Day at a Time Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman Diff'rent Strokes Lear has received many awards, including six Primetime Emmys, two Peabody Awards, the National Medal of Arts in 1999, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017, and the Golden Globe Carol Burnett Award in 2021. He is a member of the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
Thanks for another Sanford and Son reaction! You were right though, there are tons of other better Fred and Aunt Esther fights. I would love to see you guys react to some of Fred's "racist" interactions. Like with Julio, at the Mexican restaurant and more!
Ohhhhh. Aunt Esther. My favorite character. Her & Fred's bouncing insults off of each other was the best part of this show for me. Made for great laughs. "Fool!" 😅😂
For another great 70's sitcom reaction. Check out "The best of Mr. Roper". From 3's Company. He would always make fun of his wife, then look right into the camera and laugh. It was hilarious 😂
And the double entendres were wild. Remember when Mr. Roper would come to the kids apartment to fix something and overhear them talking about something that he thought was something else. And those big eyes of his. And Don Knotts did it too as Mr. Farley.
@@davidrigsby4828 Fun Fact: When they did the Ropers spinoff they had a clause in their contract that if it did work then they could return to 3's Company but Don Knotts was so good as Mr. Furley that they axed the Ropers.
Here's a fun fact. The reason why Fred and Aunt Ester were able to be so funny on the show was because they were best friends in real lfe! 😅😂🤣 Another fact is that Norman Lear passed away recently. He was a true legend for his writing.
What some people will probably not realize is that LaWanda Paige(Ester) and Redd Foxx(Fred) were the best of friends. Thier comedy careers go way back together before Sanford & Son. There's a famous old photo of them, Redd is graciously sevring LaWanda a drink. It shows how much they really loved each other. Actually, the idea of the insultive relationship between Fred & Ester was LaWanda's idea.
My Grandpa used to laugh his ass off at Fred and Aunt Esther. OMG he would almost fall out of his chair. I love Aunt Esther. There are some other clips that show her off better.
Yes, Fred and Esther set the standard for that type of back and forth. Martin and Pam on "Martin", Al Bundy and Marcy on "Married w/Children", and even George and Florence on "The Jeffersons" followed the formula set by Fred and Esther.
Yes and no... I think it was originally ignited on "I Love Lucy" between Fred and Ethel. However, it was raised to a whole new level on The Dick Van Dyke show between Buddy and Mel. Mel still played more of a straight man but by the end of the series, he was slicing up Buddy just as much. Buddy was relentless! I think Fred and Esther were influenced by both productions and blended them into their own, which was then blatantly copied by the ones you listed.
You're right. Richard Pryor was one of the writers of Sanford and Son. As I mentioned after viewing your first Sanford and Son video, Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin adapted a British comedy, Stepson and Son, for American viewers, resulting in Sanford and Son.
I'm glad two of you finally saw this for the first time. There is a Part 2 -- not to throw in too many hints. Wait......WATCH Part 2 please! 😄🧐😎 My mother is gone now but she loved the character Aunt Esther, and we all did (all 7 of us kids). Aunt Esther didn't join the show until half way into the second season.
You guys are a HOOT! It's fun watching you watch the shows I grew up with as a teenager. And you are correct that these shows now (All in the Family especially) could never make it on TV networks today. They were great and are classics, still funny and relevant.
OMG - you guys did it! I can't WAIT to see how you react to this! Joe: I agree - this isn't the best of Aunt Esther clips, but it's still hilarious. I believe Part 2 has some even better ones!
I was young, but I still watched the programs and legendary films of my parent's and grandparent's era. I'm surprised when I hear young people say that this is their first time watching or listening to a classic that merely dates back a few generations. Some of these shows still air on TV today. 📺
One of those commercials was filmed across the street from my mother in-laws house on Worth St. in Dallas Tx. When we visited her the next day she went "they filmed a commercial yesterday with Aunt Ester from Sanford and Son. I went why didn't you call us? If Kenny Rogers was across the street, wouldn't you be pissed if I didn't call you! Needless to say, I was very upset.
One of the funniest jokes from Aunt Esther. Fred told Esther "Sticks and stones my break my bones, but names will never hurt me. Aunt Esther responded, "Well, I will get some some sticks and stones and break your bones, and the name that will hurt is Esther."
I was born in DC in 1971 & of all the shows from my childhood I’ve revisited 2 rank among my all time favorites (of any era) & it’s “All in the Family” & “Sanford & Son”…..Grady has some pretty hilarious moments on that show as well & Rilo? Coolest character on TV ever 😉
Rob Reiner was great as "Meathead". How his character put up with Archie Bunker's crap and didn't knock him out is beyond me. As far as Fred and Aunt Esther, they were the best at hating each other and had no shame in letting each other know it.
@@salemdesigns65 No way , I knew about Jefferson and Maude but did not know good times spun off Maude ... if you have time can tell me how that happened was one of the actors on Maude ? You can give me the short version if you have time 😊
Thank you I made a comment about that , my cousins and I always say , " Well f--k you , you half dead mother f--ker , come on sister " we are that family quoting lines (nerds) and we are in our 40's and 50's 😂
My dad said that in the early 60s, right after he got out of the Air Force, he went to see Redd Foxx at a club. Dad was the only white person in the room, Foxx went off on him for twenty minutes, and it was the funniest thing he’s heard in his whole life. In fairness, he had the audience applaud my dad for being such a good sport, bought him a drink, and talked with him for a few, minutes after the show.
I am just so very glad to watch your channel. It helps to get away to what should matter in life and refresh the real that use to be. Thank you for this channel. It is a life saver .
The best one is when Grady gets the mail order magic kit and Fred and Esther get handcuffed by Grady demonstrating his magic act and can't get them apart.😂
One of the best quips Fred ever delivered was an episode in which he thought he was dying and Esther came to visit him while he was reflecting on his life through some old photos. He was praising his deceased wife Elizabeth for how pretty she was and Esther said something to the effect of, "Elizabeth wasn't the only beautiful one, beauty runs in my whole family." Fred looks up at Esther and says, "Are you kidding me? I could dip your face in some dough and make gorilla cookies!" 😆😂
Remember Carl Reiner was Rob Reiners father. I am a new subscriber. So interesting and fascinating hearing your comments concerning All in the Family. Will give you an historical update on different immigrants coming into this country. Italian, Irish, French, German, etc. Remember when they would arrive they would form communities with their own countrymen/women because of culture and language. Refreshing to find that you are asking historical questions. I was in college when All In the Family was incredibly popular. A revolutionary series! Phenomenal series! Keep up the great discussions!
Seeing you guys watching this video makes me appreciate the fact that I got to see this show as a youngster in the 1970s. I was roughly ten when it finished its original run. It's intriguing to watch the reactions of people young enough to be my own children and appreciating the hilariousness of this show. As you can see, Redd Foxx and La Wanda Page had unmatched chemistry on the screen. This show proved to be the death knell for The Brady Bunch, which simply couldn't match this sitcom for true humour.
when I see this show.... I laugh of course but it also makes me a little sad. Because there aren't enough of them. And Redd Fox was so funny... not just the jokes but the way he delivers them.... his expressions and timing. He was broke when he died and would not of been able to be buried where other celebs are laid to rest. Eddie Murphy paid for his funeral.
The 70s was a decade if a lot of extrene social change for the world and definitely in America. I was a kid in the 70s and a teen to 20s in the 80s. The 70s began a rapid switch over from Traditional Family Values spiked by the Socal Trauma from the Vietnam War, Women's Liberation Movement, The Gay Movement and a drastic normalization of Divorce as socially acceptible. This is why we saw a lot of Sitcoms and other shows being focused on these social topics.. sort of as Change Agents to push along the Social Engineering that was taking place implemented by those "Ruling the World". This still happens today.. Movies, TV and Socail Media are used to influence psychological change, which leads to change in peoples opinions and actions, within the world's population. It was long ago proven very effective to use "Programming"... to implement socail change. Great videos guys!!
As you said Rob Reiner is Carl Reiner's son, but he was also married to Penny Marshall (Laverne & Shirley) during All In The Family. And Penny Marshall was sister of Garry Marshall, who wrote for Carl Reiner's "Dick Van Duke Show".
...and Garry Marshall did Pretty Woman, Overboard, Beaches, The Princess Diaries and alot more... AND Penny herself did Big, A League of Their Own and many more... A very talented set of siblings, indeed.
"And you remember when you look in the mirror tonight, the Lord gave you that face, and you STUCK with it. Ho Glory!" Gets a good laugh out of me every time. :)
I hope you can view these great comedy clips knowing the fact that Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page were childhood friends and Redd insisted on LaWanda auditioning for the role of Aunt Esther
Redd & LaWanda were great friends in real life and he the writers create "Esther" for LaWanda, that's why they almost always had to take a second while doing their sparring as they would constantly make each other laugh or see who could make the other break character.
My mom wouldn't let us kids watch Sanford and Son when it first came on television. She heard a record album of his comedy a few years before, and thought it would not be good for children to watch. She said "that Redd Foxx has the filthiest mouth I ever heard!". I said they won't let him talk like that on tv, mom. She watched one episode to make sure it was "not filthy" before she allowed us to watch. My mom was a lot like Aunt Esther..very religious. She loved the show as much as kids. Redd Foxx was a riot! LOL!
Sanford and Son was based on a British TV comedy, Steptoe and Son, which ran from 1962 to '65, then '70 to '74, and centered on a father-and-son junkyard business in London.
Yea the verbal battle between Pam and Martin was inspired by Fred and Esther...LaWanda Page who plays Aunt Esther has appeared on Martin a time or two.
Thanks, guys. I like the concept of your channel. I was a baby when SAS was on but pops, uncles and other fam have shared numerous stories about the show as I was growing up. Fun to watch the clips through your millennial eyes. Salamat! ✌🏽
Rob Reiner has credits back to the late sixties. Director of "Stand By Me" and actor in "Throw Momma From The Train" are two of my favorites. One interesting thing about him is that he was married to Penny Marshall of "Laverne and Shirley" during the seventies.
Ron Reiner Photo Awesome!! I need a great new bullseye 🎯 for my Dart board. Trying to find a perfect hypocrite lol. You guys should do a review of South Park. They showcased Reiner on one of their earlier seasons that had to do with the kids Smoking cigarettes with Joe Camel and Rob Reiner manipulating the Public. Lmao Good job guys 🎉
Oh my goodness I know , do you know I was watching something (a dumb utube channel) but they bleeped out 9/11 and some one wrote why did they bleep that and someone wrote " the number 9 is ok but to put 11 next to it is offensive " I'm like please tell me your joking , 9/11 is history , it is beyond tragic but to say you can't say it because it is offensive is taking it to far , I'm like what do you do on 9/11 because the whole world is saying it , it's on the news , do you hide out on 9/10 and 9/11 because that is all you hear .. Sorry for the rant
