Went to the Where Harry met Sally cafe scene was filmed during a high school trip! I hadn't watched the film and was really thrown off by the fact that like 5 other girls started reenacting it all at once (which at the time was startling, but HILARIOUS) BUT the teacher chaperons were also NOT prepared for that to start happening and watching their look of horror at 5 young women fake orgasming was 10/10 the best part of the trip

When Harry met Sally is one of my all time favourite films. If you ever get it on DVD watch the bonus features its so interesting. My fav piece of that film trivia is the women who said "I'll have what she's having" is the directors mum 😂

My favourite grand gesture in a movie is probably the scene from 10 Things I Hate About You where Heath Ledger's character plays the music over the speakers and dances in the grandstands of the sports field, love that movie!

Both of these were "ruined" for me by a great RU-vidr - Pop Culture Detective and his video on "Stalking for Love". I highly recommend basically all of his videos but start with this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rZ1MPc5HG_I.html He explains really well how it's actually pretty creepy and the guys are crossing a lot of lines and how in a real-life situation both of these gestures could be very easily very scary for the girls. I mean...from what I remember from the film (haven't seen it in a while) Patrick is repeatedly told no and rejected by Kat and yet he continues. That's pretty toxic. And the whole singing scene is a climax of that behaviour which also makes it pretty creepy.

Re: grand gestures, you need to include the Notebook where he reveals he’s been building them a house (basically since they broke up). That definitely messed with me as a teenager.

It can actually lead to really troubling behaviour as well. When I was 19 I ended up breaking up with my bf of 2 years, and although it felt very mutual at the time, he kept showing up at my house unannounced, demanding to talk to me to try and 'win me back'. He also sent me endless gifts and letters, even after I asked him to stop several times. It really was like some 90s rom con, except in REAL life I felt my boundaries had been totally disrespected and it ruined any chance of us staying friendly in the future.

girlfromthecenteroftheuniverse I didn’t like that noah bullied allie into saying yes to go on a date by threatening to fall off the ferris wheel when she was on a date with another guy and from there on it just ruined the whole story cos it’s predicated on abusive behaviour from him. That to me isn’t romantic and it isn’t sweet it’s bollocks

Yeah I've never seen any positive reviews about the sex in that film from any of us either (I'm a bi woman) . I was really surprised how much was shown back when I watched it. While it's simulated sex, there were times during that I genuinely didn't know if it was or wasn't. I know a handful of movies that have included non-simulated sex scenes, so when that came on I wondered if it was one of them. There was just a *lot* shown. Afterward, I started reading reports about the working conditions on set, and now just feel all around gross about the film itself. Also that movie was like three hours long.

The biggest grand gesture scene for me is the ending to An Officer and A Gentlemen. I'd already seen it parodied many times as a kid before I could see that VERY adult romance and that very scene was almost as silly the parodies. Sure it made sense in context if you'd watched the whole movie, but OH BOY was that was some major fantasy fulfillment!

I love what you picked up on about humour in sex - I think the most distorted idea I got from learning about sex from movies was that it was always this straight-faced hollywood passion. I've hardly ever had sex where at least one of us hasn't at least giggled at some point. I'm not sure why directors are so phobic about showing sex as something lighthearted and fun, at least sometimes.

Hi Hannah, I wish you commented more on each scene, and included more of your thoughts and reflection, I felt like you were mostly describing what happens on screen, as opposed to really commenting/reacting to it :) also if you have time it would be great for you to watch the entire scenes (even if you can't show them in video) so that you have more context to draw on. Also, as per your first question, in Blue is the Warmest colour there's definitely a lot happening 'down there' as you say, and it's even shown on screen!

The clips were all we could find on RU-vid that were good enough quality to show in the video. But I hear you, most of the clips I’d never seen before so it was difficult to go deep with only seeing small bits. I think I just got a bit over excited watching them haha

I don't know anything about that but after having watched a part of the movie, the scenes were just GRAPHIC and useless. They didn't help any character development or the storyline. I had to skip them.

@@Flareontoast one of them was 19 in reality when the movie was filmed and she's portraying a 16-18 year old in the movie. The other one was 28ish and portrays a woman around the same age, since it's said that she studies at an art academy.

I think Sally’s fake orgasm clearly being a parody of the porn or movie orgasm, which is what a man would expect, is actually further commentary on what men think orgasms look like compared to the reality that orgasms are diverse. Like, it’s saying that guys are tricked by fake orgasms.

have you seen Outlander? It's basically 5 seasons of sex scenes. :D often they show from beginning to end! But in my opinion, the sex and intimate scenes in there are quite unrealistic.

Something I often notice in heterosexual romcoms which might make a good review video is the man starts off as a jerk, spends much of the film as a jerk and then does something remotely good and si wins over the girl in the end

Professor Marston & the Wonder Women is also about how the three-way relationship helped to create DC Comics Wonder Woman. Her Lasso Of Truth & i believe the Gold Bracers were invented from things they uhh, did in the relationship. Also fun fact: i believe the Professor died fairly young but his wife & the other lady lived together as a couple until their respective deaths.

I absolutely love the sex scene between Elio and Oliver in Call me by Your Name (even from a filmmaking perspective). It's not explicit at all but the build up to it creates this tension and this intimacy that make you feel kinda guilty, like you're watching something you shouldn't, even more than a graphic sex scene. It's just sweet and wholesome. I know there's a lot of controversy around the year gap between the characters but I just love the book, the movie, the story and the whole process behind it

For the grand gestures video (if you do it): my genuinely favourite grand gesture in any romantic movie I've seen is in He's Just Not That Into You, where Ben Affleck's character goes to Jennifer Anniston character's house after her father's had a heart attack, and she walks into the kitchen and finds that he's done the laundry and the dishes and has bought groceries. I love it way more than any of the other "grander" gestures I've seen in movies, cause it's an act of service that is so thoughtful and that you would genuinely need from your partner in day to day life

The entire movie "Somewhere in Time" With Christopher Reeves is a grand gesture movie. But, also has plenty of bits in it. Dirty Dancing is another one. The classic John Cusack holds the boombox up is another one.

I think I just added some movies to my watch list as well XD But since you asked for romcom suggestions, and I'm a huge romcom nerd. Please consider: Love Actually - obvious but filled with grand gestures, forget even the guy with confession written up on the posters telling Keira he will always love her; think of the young boy running through the airport or Colin Firth learning Portuguese to ask basically a stranger for her hand. CLASSIC. Bridget Jones' Diary - running in her knickers in the winter, love. Notting Hill - obviously. Just a girl standing in front of the boy and asking him to love her. Since we're on Julia Roberts - Runaway Bride when she proposes to Richard Geere. Less of a grand gesture perhaps but one of the best finals in a romcom imho. Oh! And Pretty Woman! And him coming to her, blasting the music, yeah. Now, Hugh Grant... Where do I even start? Okay, just two more: Music&Lyrics and singing as stupidly awkward and adorable song to get the girl back. Two weeks notice and becoming slightly less of a capitalistic pig for his girlfriend. Adorable. And just to end it up on an absolute classic, which seems to be my brand here, Sleepless in Seatle - the meeting at the Empire State Building? Classic. Dramatic. Brilliant. :D (I could possibly think of more modern and less obvious romcoms but let's be honest those tropes came out of somewhere and I love a good classic. :))

I love the scene from booksmart with all the awkwardness. It's interesting how they're diferent as well, but i think that if you picked more sex scenes from straight rom-com type it will be more "unrealistic the same".

Sense8 was so fun for having these intimacy choreographies where the action scenes would normally go, in the type of kungfu story that it's telling. Also the mechanics of it are very nice and nerdy, even during the intimacy stuff; All of them experience each other's feelings all the time, but they can sometimes link up to appear to each other in the same space, or take over another's body. Fun stuff, and the show did some swell, cheesy interpersonal drama with all this.

The author of the book Blue is the Warmest Colour is based on didn't agree with the sex scenes, said that they were "a brutal and surgical display, exuberant and cold, of so-called lesbian sex, which turned into porn, and made me feel very ill at ease", and felt that the film lacked lesbian input and was dominated by the male gaze. It's pretty safe to say most wlw agree.

I forget how much older I am than the rest of your audience until I was shocked there was no mention of the iconic Reese Witherspoon rollercoaster scene in Fear 😂 And as others have mentioned, the Buffy/Spike bringing down the house scene was huge, too.

I watched Blue is the warmest colour and it honestly made me sooo uncomfortable, even without knowing about the controversy at the time. The bit you've watched is ok, but it's much more graphic afterwards and it's just too much. It just feels like Kechiche (the director) wanted to make his own little lesbian fantasy. And it's such a shame because the comics is amazing ! I would recommend Shortbus. It's a 2005 film directed by John Cameron Mitchell (who I absolutely adore) and it's just brilliant (in my opinion at least). It shows a wide range of people from all backgrounds and all sexualities with all kinds of personal struggles, and sex is portrayed in such a positive light. I do have to say that it is extremely graphic and there are some non-simulated penetration and ejaculation scenes, but it's certainly worth the watch. I don't know about other countries, but in France it was forbidden for people under 16, just so that you know

I watched it in a theater, it was reeeeally awkward and long. Also they don't play very well, even outside of the sex scene. The comic book from which it's adapted is waaaaaay better..

This scene from atonement with Keira in the infamous green dress just made my closeted gay heart beat like crazy haha. They do show a bit more as James' character uplift Keira and they start having sex against the bookshelf and they yeah Saoirse interrupte them and it's a whole thing. Concerning the first lesbian scene it's from the movie "blue is the warmest color" which faced huge critics because the director forced the actress do film the sex scenes during hours whitout interruptions (when you watch the whole movie you can see that we have extremely long a'd graphic 10 mins+ sex scenes) or respecting their boundaries so it was very traumatic for the actresses! A lot of people criticized the movie because it objectify lesbians. I didn't see the movie myself but luckily I read the graphic novel it is based on way before the movie came out back in high school and the GN is just such a beautiful and moving love story!

My favourite sex scene is the time Buffy and Spike get together, they actually take down a house. It's not a healthy relationship, but I love it all the same. One of the episodes at the end she asks Spike to just lay with her while she sleeps the day before she defeats the First Evil. So cute. Also you must watch Professor Marsden, it's so good!

I’m surprised no one recommend Call Me By Your Name. (If you ignore the age gap) it’s very sweet. They hug and Elio just kinda melts into Oliver’s arms. It really shows their love and connection. It’s a bit awkward and strangely wholesome, something I’ve never seen in film before

I have seen it, I think it was suggested but I couldn’t get round to all of them. Also, the age gap makes me feel a bit uncomfortable but I dunno if it doesn’t actually matter and I didn’t really know what to say about it, if anything, as a not-gay man.
