Soooooo- Taylor’s Reputation album was born of Kanye’s claiming her fame in the album/song you mentioned, as well as Kim K editing a phone call between Taylor/Kanye to look like Kanye had asked for permission to say what he said and show her in the way he did in his music video- all lies, but people WENT INNNNNNNNNN on Taylor. Said she just wanted to play the victim role and blah blah blah. Taylor went into such a downward spiral she wasn’t seen in the public eye for a year. Reputation was her first album released after all that drama, and it most definitely was a comeback album. She took back control of her reputation and look at her NOW!!!!! And look at Kanye now 🤷🏼‍♀️ #karma You should watch the Miss Americana documentary. Explains so much about how and when she became famous, the beginning of the Kanye situation (when he came on stage to basically say she didn’t deserve an award she’d just won), and so much more. It’s sooooo good.

The credit for directing Problem was in the opening title screen. Yes, she started directing her videos with the third one for Lover (The Man); aside from the one she got Blake Lively to direct (a first for her) she seems to do all of them now.

To briefly* explain the “comeback” of look what you made me do- in 2016 Taylor was at the then height of her fame during the unprecedented success of her 1989 album and Kanye called her to ask to promote his upcoming single where he shared the lines “I feel like Taylor might owe me sex/ I feel like me and taylor might still have sex why? I made her famous” once the song was released Taylor’s team protested his use of the word bitch-kim k shared a video recording clip of the phone conversation which that made it seem like Taylor had “approved” of the finished song-calling her lair/snake etc etc- Taylor’s team doubles down saying she was never made aware of the bitch line and never heard the finished product or anything else after the call wishing to “be excluded from this narrative”. Long story even shorter the world jumped on this “playing the victim” narrative hate train and the media (thousands on social media and like actual publications outside pop media coverage) relentlessly tore her apart for a year. In 2020 The whole 20 minute call got leaked in 2020 (really deranged and weird manic behavior from Kanye btw it’s an… interesting watch for those curious) and look what u made me do was the first anyone had heard of/from her in a long while - hence a “comeback anthem” was born

If you watch the" Miss Americana" documentary you will get more knowledge about all of that time period. But "Look what you made me do" basically in 2016 Kanye and Kim illegaly recorded and edited a phone call trying to frame Taylor, calling her a liar and a snake, and Taylor got cancelled because so many people were fooled by their game. "Taylorswiftisoverparty" trended globally, the media also turned on her, saying vile things and lying about her, and Taylor thought her career was over and disappeared for a year. When she left she deleted all her social media and it went black. But one day a snake appeared on her social media and she came back with "there will be no explaination, there will just be reputation" aka "Reputation album" and this video. It was so brilliant, and now all other artists try to mimick her by making their social media go black before a new album release. Btw a few years later the original phonecall leaked and showed that the true snakes were Kanye and Kim.🤮 Kanye have been bullying her for almost her entire career before this happened also. Real swifties never doubted, but it was a hard time for Taylor and us as her fans in the trenches, so we were so happy when she returned stronger than ever.

I think it would help to watch a breakdown video or a video with all the easter eggs in Look What You Made Me Do. The public attitude / narrative toward Taylor was a lot more negative back then. Yes, a lot of it was Kanye, who was stoking the flames of their beef as she got more popular. But so much of it had to do with misogyny, slut shaming, and this idea that hating her was edgy or cool. She's described the process of writing this song as being "a wounded animal lashing out" and the outro of the music video is a direct response to her cancellation and the Kim K / Kanye phone call

ok going to kind of recap the lwymmd video and the lore of it: ofc we know the kanye interrupting taylor's speech story that kind of started the whole thing. so in 2016, kanye released his song famous that says "i feel like me and taylor might still have sex i made that bitch famous". taylor came out and said she never approved of that lyric (kanye was claiming she did) and all of that. kim then posted a clip of a phone call of kanye with taylor on the phone and the clip shows kanye asking for her approval of the line and taylor agreeing. everyone started calling taylor a liar and a snake (kim posted a tweet on national snake day being super shady to taylor as well) and there's 'receipts' of taylor lying. so taylor disappeared and then suddenly came back with this song. of course it came out kim edited the phone call showing 'receipts' and the conversation never happened and taylor truly didnt approve of the lyrics like kanye claimed she did. the video is LITTERED in easter eggs, pretty much every scene is one. the most iconic ones are: - the first clip one of the gravestones has the fake name she used to write songs undercover and was her admitting it was her basically - all of the snakes is her leaning into kim/media calling her a snake and making it her own thing basically - car crash scene she resembles katy perry (who she was feuding with) holding a grammy (which katy has never won) - the bank robbing scene she's wearing a shirt that says 'blind for love' which is poking fun at people saying she'll just date whoever whenever and goes through men - the back of the robbery with the "stream.co" is when she took all of her music off of streaming to protest the payment given to the artist by streaming services - the models being brainwashed are for when the media said she has an army of models and only surrounds herself with models - the men in the dance scene are one for each ex boyfriend and the i

I HATE that social media made her feel like she had to change the scale scene. When i was in middle and high school i remember looking down at my body and thinking how big and ugly i was. Constantly wearing clothes to try to hide my "problem" areas and dieting and working out to try to fix them. But now looking back at pictures of me then. I was THIN, but bc i didnt have a completely flat stomach and my hips were too wide for low rise jeans my brain told me i was too big. My younger self would have benefited SO MUCH from that scale scene. Realizing i wasnt the only one who felt that way and that it wasn't real. Just my insecurities messing with me.

In the original video, they showed her looking down at the scale, and then a scale registering her weight as "FAT". Thin skinned assholes claimed that Taylor was fat shaming overweight people, stirred up controversy. She edited it to her stage self looking at the scale and shaking her head. In the ME! video, she says "Spelling is fun!" ----- which got a lot of backlash, and commentary. She took it off the album version of the song. imo, she should have ignored them,, both times. There are too many who just don't like her views (politics) and use anything on social media to attack her personally.
