Not to discuss episode 3 too much, but to your point about the small details in the show, I find it interesting that Frank, an openly gay older man, chose the code for the radio and made the 80s mean trouble. He definitely would’ve lived through the AIDS pandemic in the 80s and likely lost friends.

Not only that, people were murdering gay men regularly in the 80's. Not a week went by where I didn't read about or hear about some gay man being thrown off a bridge, stabbed, etc... It's why it took me over 40 years to come out. That shit stays with you.

People get pissed when characters don't look like the thing they like. Same thing happened in The Sandman with Death. They hired an actress who NAILED the part, but she didn't LOOK the part, so they bitched about it. I will always take tallent over appearance.

I know this is a year late 😅 but the fact is if they only went full out with looks, the characters most likely wouldn't feel like them and that would pull me out of the story so hard I'd fuming. Tlou did an awesome job at casting. That's just facts 😊

Haven’t seen anyone shout this one yet, but the wonderful bearded dude with Kathleen was the actor for Tommy in the game! Since Merle is playing her own character again, as Marlene, that’s technically our first little og actor CAMEO :)) Can’t wait for Troy and Ashley!!

@@SortaStupid also the group that is hunting them down was in the game, but they were just NPCs you were fighting and running from, none of them had actual names or stories to them, so they are just humanizing them in the show.

I was one of those who didn’t like her casting going she doesn’t look like Ellie etc, but first scene of her and the counting to 10 and saying “8…fuck… you” I was like yep THATS ELLIE, so I’m very happy with the casting now she is a perfect ellie

Even though Pedro is 47, he is made to look older as Joel. But Joel does look good. My dad is 60 years old and he looks good, you wouldn't give him 60. I always laugh when people think 50 or 60 is so old you have to look old. Lot of these people look better then some 30 year olds

I think Katheleen's character is based on the note Joel found in the Red X shiv door right before the hotel and the cafe, if you know the game. The library, down a few alleyways, then when you make it to the next street there is a mini-cinematic? It's forward and on your left around the car. Some lady goes crazy and wants to "burn it all down" re: Fedra because her son was killed for rebelling against Fedra. Yeah, I think Kathleen's character was based on that note.

I think the thing to remember about Ellie and her fascination with guns is that in the world she's grown up in, having a gun means you're one of the people in power. You have the ability to decide shit for yourself - people with guns tell people without guns what to do, and for an orphan who was raised in a military training orphanage, there is no more concrete symbol of having the power to live your own life on your own terms than possessing a firearm. And it's not just true with FEDRA, either - people like Tess, Joel, and Bill all get to make their own choices and they all own and use firearms. That's not an accident.

I actually live in Alberta, can confirm the filming locations in the series. The outbreak scene in ep1 is filmed in a town called Fort Macleod, while the bridge in ep4 is just outside a city called Lethbridge. I actually live not far from that bridge, actually. Also, fun fact: Kathleen's second-in-command is actually Tommy's VA from the game, Jeffery Pierce

I think we'll learn more about Henry & Sam, and Kathleen. The historic thing about many revolutions is that once the oppressing system is overthrown, those who take over are likely to use the same or similar systems of oppression to secure their power. By killing a doctor-a person possessing skills that are hugely important in a post-apocalyptic world-and then transforming Henry into a scapegoat to secure her leadership and avenge her brother, Kathleen has become as oppressive as FEDRA and as single-minded in carrying out retribution to those who fought against her/them. When her right hand man shows her the undulating sinkhole that will certainly a bigger problem for the people she leads than hunting down Henry (and by extension, Sam, Joel and Ellie), she chooses to focus her people on a manhunt rather than an impending wave of Infected that is far more difficult problem. It's also a problem that would divert focus away from her addressing her personal grievances.

I’m pretty sure Brian is Kathleen’s kid. She wasn’t going to kill the doctor until Brian’s body comeback. Once her kid is dead, it’s retribution and blood for her and nothing else.

@@Hikayuhuy It seems facile to conclude that Bryan was referring to Kathleen when he mentioned his mother. This was a small group doing their own thing to get by or to get a little extra on the side. Not much different than Joel, Tess and their crew. Kathleen uses that incident to instigate the hunt. In any case, I expect we'll find out more next week!

@@Hikayuhuy You may be right, but I'm not persuaded. This show has excelled in details, explicit or implied. Reinforcements arrive calling out Bryan's name because he probably called them in and reported that the others were down. Bryan makes the mistake of heatedly charging at Joel rather than waiting for reinforcements to back him up. If Bryan is Kathleen's son, his death will add fuel to her focus on the manhunt. If he isn't, she is already focused on the manhunt. The possible attack of Infecteds from sink hole remains unaddressed either way-a huge plot point that will pay off next week.

If Joel died instead of Sarah, I think it would be about Sarah starting the Fireflies because she hates government because they killed her dad. If it was Joel instead of Tess, I don't think much changes.

I have watched a lot of reactions to this episode by now and I got to say you guys are the very first ones I've seen that take Kathleen seriously. Everyone else just jokes about how she looks like a PTA mom and laughs at her and says they can't take her seriously, as if a seemingly normal woman can't be a complete psychopath. Kudos to you guys for being different.

38:20 Yeah this is episode straight out of the game. A bunch of Militia guys took over Pitssburg. Any body who is not part of their group pretty much was an enemy and they were oppressing lots of innocent people. Also they raid anybody who app rochase the city and steal their stuff. In the game you go from building to building hiding from those assholes and a truck kept chasing them. Very frustrating eating lol. The new stuff is the woman leading their group and chasing after Henry. Also the guy who attacked them actually try to choke and kill Ellie. He was a real bastard the guy in series looked a lot younger and naive for thinking they could talk it out just like that.
