They actually did Denethor quite dirty in this movie, he was much more noble and mentally strong than they portray him in the movie. They don't explain that he was using a Palantir to challenge Sauron, and though Sauron couldn't control him outright, he COULD control what Denthor saw, and that is why he was so hopeless.

The Ring was in a "sleeping" state for all those lost years, which is why Bilbo could use it without consequences. In the books it is however explained that Bilbo senses a great eye staring at him when he used the ring in later years. The 9 ringwraiths/Nazghûl can sense the ring when it's used in their vicinity, not from unlimited range. Sauron needed Gollum to pinpoint it's whereabouts, and when the 9 got close they could sense it. Can't believe you haven't heard of Enya! She's amazing, and you've definitely heard "Only Time" from her, it's used in memes ;) my personal favorite of hers is "Echoes in the Rain".

Another thing to remember is that in the book it was 17 years between when Bilbo left The Shire on his 111th birthday and when Gandalf returned and told Frodo of the danger of The One Ring. The Ring Wraiths weren't sent out to The Shire until closer to when Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin headed out to Bree. They just condensed it in the movie version so that it seemed to happen days, or maybe weeks later.

@sleepyburr
@sleepyburr 3 года назад
Sort of? That might work for the movies, but if you go by Tolkien's original writing it doesn't really work like that. The Nazgul can sense wearers of the ring, but the connection between the wearer and Sauron, as seen with Frodo in the films, doesn't really happen. Not just from wearing the ring, that is. Both Bilbo and Frodo wear it several times in the books without drawing Sauron's direct attention, and it only starts happening with Frodo after he accidentally makes eye contact with Barad-dur while at Amon Hen and physically catches Sauron's gaze, inadvertently alerting him to the ring's presence.

About Galadriel: "I don't know if I should trust her." Then you are very wise. She is extremely powerful, and extremely old and wise (She is literally older than the sun and moon) but she is also extremely proud and ambitious, traits that got her essentially exiled from Valinor. Her turning down the power of the one ring is probably the single most impressive feat in the history of middle earth (Ok, to be fair, Earendil slaying Ancalagon the Black is pretty fucking badass.)

The reason why Galadriel got a little crazy is because the one ring compels people to take it and it tempted Galadriel but Galadriel's will power overcame the temptation of the evil ring. Just a reminder Lord Elrond has Vilya which is the elven ring of air keeping Rivendell beautiful and Galadriel has the Nenya the elven ring of water which is keeping Lothlorien beautiful. Gandalf has the elven ring of fire called Narya which is said to inspire hope. The elves are saddened by the fact that they must leave Middle Earth to go the West which is a real heaven on earth for the elves and those that have accomplished great things. Once the one ring is destroyed the elven rings have no power in upholding the beauty of Rivendell and Lothlorien. The beauty of those lands is being held in memory of when things were vibrant and magical.

If the familial relationships interest you, Galadriel (who seems a bit scary in the movie) is Elrond's mother-in-law and Arwen's grandmother. She is the highest ranking (and both wisest and most powerful) member of the Noldor (Deep Elves) still hanging around in Middle Earth at the time of the War of the Ring. Sauron and the nine ringwraiths (Nazgul) were not aware that the One Ring had been found by anybody since Isildur died and dropped it in the river at the Gladden Fields. Bilbo Baggins found it in the Misty Mountains when Gollum dropped it in 2941 of the Third Age. It was only very many years later (likely more than 60 years) that Gollum was wandering on the borders of Mordor and was captured by Sauron's servants. Under torture, Gollum revealed to the Dark Lord where and when he found the Ring, in the river, and that the Ring had been 'stolen' and was with "Baggins" in the "Shire" (as seen in the movie). That was most likely after Bilbo's 111th birthday party, so by that time Frodo had control of the Ring. Only then did the Black Riders (Nazgul on horseback) start searching for Baggins in the Shire to track down the Ring. Even though Bilbo did not use the Ring for evil purposes (unlike Gollum, who had held it for 500 years), it still had a powerful effect on him while keeping it for 60 years: it stretched out the length of his life, but he was also addicted to it. Despite the addiction, Bilbo was the only Ringbearer of some duration to willingly give the Ring to another bearer, and he needed Gandalf's help to do that.

Also, it is important to note that Galadriel is one of the oldest and most powerful elves alive. Tolkien was quite the pessimist, and he said in a letter that he "never expected history to be anything but a long defeat." Galadriel is the ONLY character to express that in the books. When Gimli says he asked for one line of hair and that Galadriel gave him three, Legolas smiles, because the greatest elf who ever lived (Feanor) asked for the same thing and was refused. She saw Gimli's pure heart and granted him three times as much as she refused the greatest of the elves.

@RigaldoVulpes
@RigaldoVulpes 3 года назад
@@danilooliveira6580 No Arwen was speaking a high elvish language that is called Quanyan to summon the river. The common elvish language is Sindarin. Fans want to connect the actions of the river to Elrond but there is little proof other than the book stating he can use it to protect Rivendell. We clearly see Arwen speaking to nature in Quanyan to summon the spirit of the river. Plus it is written in the book that Elrond is given Vilya. It is said to be the most powerful but again little proof other than helping heal.

To answer some of your questions: 1. When Gandalf the Grey seems reluctant to go into Moria unless they have no other choice ( "but why?" You ask at 4 minutes 3 seconds in) The reason for this is to do with the history of the city. Gandalf essentially seems reluctant, reflecting the suspicions of many others, about the fate of the Dwarven City of Khazad-Dûm. It wasn't always called Moria. Moria means ''the Black Pit''. Something very bad happened in TA (Third Age) 1980 - over a _thousand years before_ so Khazad-Dûm was never the same again. The Dwarves dug too greedily and too deep, and they awoke the Balrog of Morgoth known later as Dúrin's Bane. The precise details of what happened are unclear, though we do know: - the Balrog didn't just drive the Dwarves of Khazad-Dûm out overnight. Somewhat tragically, they tried desperately to fight it for as long as they could, almost in denial about what was happening. You see, that city had been raised in the First Age and had already been around for several thousand years before the disaster in TA 1980. It was their greatest city. The main events of the films are in TA 3018 - TA 3022. In spite of gallant and stubborn defiance, the Dwarves were utterly unprepared for dealing with the Balrog, and it was far too powerful for them. An entire army of Dwarves failed. The Balrog killed many, many Dwarves. How many is unknown but it's likely in the thousands. - it seems to have used hit and run attacks striking in one place before reappearing elsewhere to cause mayhem. I think it's important to emphasise that Khazad-Dûm is a _big_ place. Remember, it took 4 days to pass through. I think it is very likely that Gandalf had seen Khazad-Dûm when it was great and full of life. He's clearly been there before (like remembering which way to go; how could he remember if he'd never been before? etc) The Balrog seems to have used terror tactics and wore away at the Dwarves for a protracted time. - as far as I can tell, the Dwarves held on for around 4 months, refusing to completely abandon the city. Two generations of Dwarven Kings died there fighting the Balrog . The Dwarves also called it that, due to having no idea what it was. All they knew is that a terrible monster. It was a literal living nightmare. - the sheer size of the great Dwarven city worked against the Dwarves, because it could easily just hide in the depths and be impossible to follow or know where it would be next. Insanely, the Dwarves were _still living in the upper levels for months while this monster was still going around_ below them. In all the history of the Dwarves, it is unclear if they had ever seen a Balrog before. They'd encountered Dragons in the First Age and later ages, though I don't think they ever fought a Balrog. - The Balrog was a refugee from the *War of Wrath* at the end of the First Age. There were once several (perhaps 7) Balrogs, and they were effectively speaking, the ''bodyguards'' and/or field commander/generals, of none other than Morgoth (Sauron's boss) Melkor/Morgoth = Satan in the Tolkien Legendarium. He's literally the Lucifer analogue of this fictional universe. The Balrogs are the Valaraukar tribe of the Maiar Ainur. Melkor is a fallen/evil Valar Ainur. Ainur are spirits of divine power. Essentially, angels (or demons when turned to evil) and otherwise possible minor gods. Balrogs are Maiar spirits of fire twisted into monsters. It isn't just that they are big and scary; they have an innate aura of terror that scares even brave people. The Balrog ran away from the Divine Powers in the war that saw Melkor's downfall, and while most Balrogs were killed by the heavenly powers, he somehow escaped to the Hithaeglir. Fearing justice, he hid away beneath the city that developed above his head for millennia. The Dwarves were totally unaware of this. - Realistically the Dwarves *never stood a chance* with no idea what they were even up against and no means to kill it with anything they possessed. Soon after it killed King Dúrin VI, it killed his son the then new King Náin I. After suffering appalling losses, the Dwarves _finally_ abandoned the city to the monster. The survivors founded the great city of Erebor to the North East. The Lonely Mountain, beyond Mirkwood. Yet never so glorious; never so mighty as their home city of Khazad-Dûm used to be. It was the greatest single tragedy ever to befall the Dwarves. They never truly recovered, one could argue. - The Elves of Lothlorien to the near East of Moria, were terrified as many of them felt a great aura of evil emanating from the East Gate of Moria, and many hundreds if not thousands of Elves evacuated the Golden Wood. Although it was never clearly stated that the Elves knew what it was, it seems almost certain that they'd figured it out by the time of the War of the Ring. Galadriel and her people were always suspicious that it had to be something as terrible as a Balrog to destroy the greatest city of the Dwarves within half a year, I reckon. - Rumours about the fate of Moria would have been spreading for centuries. However, before TA 1980, Balrogs hadn't been seen for 5,000 years. - The Dwarves tried to reclaim Moria in TA 2799 (over two centuries before the War of the Ring) under King Thrain of Erebor, and a massive battle between Orcs of the Misty Mountains in the tens of thousands and an army of 10,000 Dwarves, raged in the Dimrill Dale; the Battle of Azanulbizar, by the East Gate of Moria. It was a bloody battle without mercy and most on both sides died there, including many Dwarven lords and even a prince of the royal line. King Thrain himself went missing in action; presumed dead. At the end of the battle, a young Dwarven hero named Dáin Ironfoot (a future king of his people) looked into the East Gate, and was terrified by a great evil presence staring back at him. He could not tell what it was; hiding in shadow and flame. The Balrog had been watching the battle from his lair. The Dwarves were so depleted they couldn't try to go inside (and they'd have all died if they did anyway) So they went home, failing to reclaim Moria. - Later still, the colony established by Balin of Erebor, after the events of The Hobbit (no spoilers) went back into Moria. It is important to point out that everyone (including their King) warned them against doing this, and yet Balin was determined to try. A small number of Erebor Dwarves went with him, including a few other heroes, and they seemed to be doing okay for about 5 years. Why the Balrog didn't destroy them instantly is hard to tell, though they wrote about a shadow moving in the dark (they knew something horrifying was down in the city depths, but weren't sure what) Sadly for Balin's colony, Goblins swarmed the East Gate of Moria (I think Sauron sent them) They held for as long as they could though were eventually wiped out. None survived. - Gandalf was apparently aware of the Balin colony mission to Moria, though did not investigate it further. After a few years, *all word from Moria fell silent* and nobody knew why. Gandalf suspected disaster, though did not know for sure. Therefore, his reluctance to found out the hard way, was logical. It could get them all killed (the Fellowship) if the rumours about Moria were true. Even so, for all anyone knew, Balin's colony could have still been alive and well, just not keeping up with letters to the outside world. Tragically, the truth was they were indeed all killed. Gandalf's fears were proven correct. 2. "They built all this inside a mountain?" at 6 minutes 50 seconds in. Yes, they did - in fact, Khazad-Dûm was built *beneath 3 mountains* and Moria was thrice the size of Erebor as a result. Never again would the Dwarves possess the might and grandeur they once held in the Second and earlier Third Ages. Those glory days were long gone by the time of the War of the Ring. Dwarrowdelf (the great city plaza with so many halls and columns) would have once shone with light. Now it was a horror show; albeit still impressive. The Balrog took everything from the Dwarves. 3. At 19 minutes 34 seconds: "How come the Nine Kings didn't notice and didn't find out Bilbo had the Ring?" etc and about Gollum telling Mordor ''Shire'' and ''Baggins'' under torture. Answer: because Sauron's Ring seems to have had a different effect on Bilbo. The majority of the time Bilbo had with it, Sauron hadn't been calling out to it. He always searched for it, but it was only until the Nazgûl caught Gollum that Sauron became aware of the general location of the One Ring, and the surname of the one carrying it. Sauron attacked Osgiliath, on the Anduin River, to allow the Nazgûl to cross over and ride to the Shire as quickly as possible. That is how they got past Gondor. As soon as Sauron knew, the Ring itself became more dangerous to carry because it had heard it's master's call. Sauron was again frantically looking for it. Gollum had it for 500 years before Bilbo. When they captured him, he'd already lost it long before. Sauron tortured Gollum and then released him back into the world - on purpose, to find the Ring. Then he'd just take it back off him. Bilbo's life was prolonged by the One Ring, and it was slowly corrupting him, even while it was in ''Sleep Mode". Putting the Ring on with the Nazgûl now in Eriador, was perilous. The Nazgûl had not arrived yet in the Shire, so Bilbo was safe. It just made him invisible. Only later, did it actively betray it's bearer to Sauron, when it wanted to be found. Remember, the Ring had sat at the bottom of a river for thousands of years before it came into new ownership. It has a mind of it's own, with Sauron's will and malice poured into it when made in the Second Age. P.S - are you an Elven maiden? Certainly look like one ;)

You made some mistakes: "The Balrogs are the Valaraukar tribe of the Maiar Ainur", No, the name Balrog is in Sindarin while the name Valaraukar is in Quenya. It's not a tribe or anything. The Balrogs were more than 7, probably they numbered on the hundred or so. Many Balrogs were in origin Maia serving the Vala Aüle, since as stated by Tolkien, the Vala and Maia of Creation were closer to Corruption, so Morgoth attracted them to his side easier than other Maia. It is thus is no coincidence that Sauron and Saruman both served Aüle and got corrupted. Sauron was in fact the greatest Maia right after the Valar, known as Mairon.

@@arb6729 I'm just a Tolkien legendarium lover with a lot of knowledge of the lore, books, films or otherwise. Didn't really require any research upon writing the comment if I'm being honest here it just came from my own memory, although sadly youtube's unspecified and annoying word limit thing made me have to delete about 1/4 of my original comment. Had to cut out a lot on the background of the Balrogs and what they really represent. I elaborated on how, like Saruman, Radagast and Gandalf, they _used to be_ angels of the dawn of time, among God's (Eru's) first children. I wanted to contextualise the One Ring more as well but prioritised the explanation of what happened in Moria. Thank you for your kind compliment, I just wanted to explain now that there was a lot more written and it took me another 20-30 minutes to take out enough sentence by sentence to please the youtube word limit thing. Sigh, I wrote a lot more for the One Ring but had to take an entire paragraph out among other paragraphs. I type fast you see.

"How come the 9 Kings didn't notice that Bilbo has the ring when he used it on his birthday?" You are right, this is a plot hole in the movie. It came about because, in the book, Sauron has not fully recovered his powers when Bilbo uses the ring. It is another 17 years before Gandalf completes his research and returns to the Shire to warn Frodo, who by now is 50 years old. This would obviously not work in a movie, so they compressed the timeline. Hence the plot hole - which most people don't spot, so well done on seeling it!

In recent months I've watched so many of reactions to both Jackson's trilogies - and written many commentaries under them explaining MiddleEarth things :) And I found that there are two differend kind of reactors. Most guys chose more often battle scenes and adventures scenes to share - and for example share the charge of Rohan more often than Leaving Lorien scene (one of the most beautiful scene in all 6 movies) :) but most girls chose more dialogues scenes to share :) And I like this :)

"There are many magic rings in this world, Bilbo Baggins, and none of them should be used lightly." Basically there are other rings around capable of magic. The One Ring was long believed to be lost forever. Basically forgotten. So the fact that Bilbo shows up with a magic ring was a surprise but Gandalf didn't immediately think it was THAT ring. Not saying magic rings are super common but still no reason that it'd be the ring of the Dark Lord. You've technically already seen a couple more in the movie but they didn't really do much that we saw.

Lore explanation: The ring wraiths didn't found out where Bilbo was in the past is because Sauron wasn't strong enough. Sauron linked a part of his soul to the ring, and it took him thousands of years to recover even conscience. Once he was strong enough, he could start to track down the ring and send or command the ring wraiths to look fot it. In the next movies you'll probably have more questions about how Tolkien's world works, because there are things that happen in the films that have sense if you have the right information from the books, but isn't given because it wouldn't fit the pase of a film which is already very long, so I'll be glad to explain all the questions you might have, just make sure to keep the questions in the video when you edit it! :)

Duaffy: if you like Enya’s work on Lord of the Rings, check out Smaointe (pronounced ‘smu-ee-chay’) on her Shepherd Moons album. She wrote it after the death of a friend of hers. It’s sung in Irish Gaelic, but the song is about missing her friend, but finding comfort in the green beauty of nature. Definitely one of her best. Side note: Enya has been making music since the 80s and her fans have associated her music with Lord of the Rings for almost as long. It’s part of the reason Peter Jackson wanted her to do music for the movie.

It may not be a satisfying answer, exactly, but Sauron using the ring to find people was kinda added in for dramatic effect in the movies. In the books, iirc, simply putting on the ring wasn't enough to draw his attention, and both Bilbo and Frodo are implied to use it at various points without alerting him or seeing visions of the Eye. It's only really in the later part of Fellowship when Frodo puts it on at Amon Hen (the site of the finale battle you just watched) and he happens to turn in the direction of Sauron's tower that the connection is formed for the first time, and Sauron is able to become directly aware of Frodo using the ring. In the books, the ring still has a consciousness and a certain evil aura about it, but most of the pursuit that happens in Fellowship is actually achieved without the psychic connection between Sauron and Frodo because it doesn't happen as early as it does in the movie. It doesn't become a more prominent feature until Sauron is able to form that link for the first time at Amon Hen. I love both the books and the films, and of course I encourage you to continue watching this wonderful series, but as a far as I know, Peter Jackson decided to portray the relationship between Frodo and Sauron in a slightly different way than Tolkien did in his books, and for whatever reason didn't quite connect the dots on that particular detail.

When Bilbo used his ring on his birthday Sauron hadn't increased his power enough yet to sense it. Once he released the ring wraiths is sort of when he could sense the ring better and he released them after the birthday party. That being said, I don't think the movie accurately portrayed how much time went by from Bilbo's birthday party and Gandalf coming back to see if it was the ring of power. I believe it was at least several months from the birthday party to Gandalf throwing the ring in the fire to check it.

yes, several, around 192 months. it passed 16 years until gandalf could say for sure it was the one ring. and another one year passed frodo procrastinating for leave the shire. Frodo's birthday is the same of Bilbo, and at the 111 bilbo party, frodo was 33. frodo left the shire when he was at 50, 17 yeasr after, same age as bilbo when he left for the Hobbit adventure
