I remember watching this movie with my mother in the cinema. Everyone actually just sat and were so completely entranced by Ed Sheeran's song during the ending credits that noone left the room until it was over. In all, the Hobbit trilogy is flawed, no doubt about it. It's completely bloated with useless stuff, but it still at least has a great story, good characters, themes, soundtrack and filmmaking.

In the books the power of healing was with Elrond becouse he got the ring of the water - the ring with saphire - Vilya. And then some powers of healing was also with some of the most powerful elven lords like Glorfindel - who could helped Frodo on the way to Rivendell, not healing him but actualy he lessen his pain. Then as in the movies they changed ( reasonably I think ) Glorfindel's role to Arwen's role this means that film Arwen got the elven healing abilities - though not as great as of her father's - one of the bearers of the 3 elven rings. Then in the new trilogy they invented Tauriel charachter who does not exist in any book of Tolkien. And then she is only a wood elf. Not Sindar like king Thranduil and not Noldor like Galadriel and not half-elf but with Noldors and Maiars blood like Elrond. So the question is why can she heal him? The power of Arwen and Elrond was explained in the movies. But Tauriels powers are not enough explained. No every elf shared this powers of healing. Somewhere in LOTR book AFAIR Legolas told the others that he is no healer. As Tauriel is invented by the filmmakers so Tauriel's healing abilities are only in the movies. :)

The will of men and women the hope against all odds, would overcome all the vilest and most destructive of any of Morgoth's creations. It's why Tolkien never finished the sequel to Lord Of The Rings the great enemy was defeated, men would become bored and hateful and so Tolkien decided to keep the legends of Middle-Earth as they were. I love how Tolkien created situation where Bilbo kept Smaugs interest to keep this mysterious thief alive by giving himself titles, riddles where he is from and ingratiate Smaug while looking way out of situation where he was in. While Smaug is enchanted by gold and shiny things, he is not dumb beast that kills things randomly. Of course Smaugs years of solitude might have helped as well to win dragons willingness to listen.

If I were running an RPG campaign, as soon as they open the hidden door, the dragon would be getting rolls to smell the change in air. As soon as a dwarf steps inside or lingers near the open door, the dragon would be getting plus to that sense roll. Smaug was the model for the avaricious dragon. Paranoid and obsessively protective. The question I had from the beginning, reading it years ago is what was Gandalf's plan? An army of dwarves couldn't do anything. Seven armies of dwarves would give him entertainment and some snacks. 13 dwarves and a hobbit had no chance , so the only factor that made for any confidence at all for the quest was Gandalf vs the Dragon. One hobbit burglar made no difference, the only thing that made any sense was the wizard, and he might as well have walked in the front door alone. Smaug the Golden, he was called, even before they gave him a nice sauna of molten gold...

And I, too, am critical of the movies, they could have been better in many ways, but the first one (An Unexpected Journey) is still my favourite movie of all time. These movies really made me fall in love with Middle Earth and Tolkien's creations and for that I'm forever grateful. No other fandom brings me as much joy and feels as the LOTR and Hobbit movies. I think a big reason these movies weren't liked as well was because a lot of behind the scenes drama happened very early on during production and it became very well known publicly. For example Peter Jackson didn't think he should direct these movies and pushed for Guillermo del Toro to direct instead because he thought he would be better fit for getting the tone of the Hobbit story correct. Everything was going well for a few months, then the studio pushed Guillermo del Toro out of the project, Peter Jackson was forced in, all work up to that point was scrapped, and the deadline for releasing the movie did not change (for reference, the Lord of the Rings was in pre-production for 2 or 3 years just to make all the props and sets before filming). No one really knows what happened for sure, but the common theory is the studio wanted the movies to be more like the Lord of the Rings, even though Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro wanted a different tone, and there was an implied ultimatum to Peter Jackson. Just looking at a lot of behind the scenes clips and interviews with Peter Jackson, he looks broken inside through most of production. And there's way worse stuff that went on, some of which involves spoilers for the movies, so you probably don't want to look into it until you watch all the movies first. Overall from a dedicated fan perspective, it seems like the studio interfered and made the entire movie crew miserable to force them to make lower quality movies, and that had they just been allowed to make the movies they wanted, they would have turned out better. They aren't the worst movies, but they really don't have that same emotional impact that the Lord of the Rings did.

Those little asides where you've edited the audio for your voice always surprise me and always makes me laugh. I highly recommend looking up the behind the scenes videos of Benedict Cumberbatch playing Smaug. The fun he had is palpable and infectious. You are correct that it's definitely not the worst movie ever. If you like it, great! If the movie gets you to read the books, that's even better. And while it's a bad adaptation without a lot wrong with it, it's not the worst adaptation, Tolkien or otherwise... let's not talk about those...

This will always be my personal favorite part of "The Hobbit." As a child the descent into Mirkwood was such an exciting, eerie sequence to read that I always knew would make for a memorable cinematic setpiece. Even the additional material added to expand the narrative (the chase down the river, the big reveal of the Necromancer, etc.) flows together nicely within the movie. I like "An Unexpected Journey," it's fun. But it's really just an introduction establishing the characters and their quest stretched out to feature-length, and the final part is similarly a large protracted final battle. "The Desolation of Smaug," for me at least, does the most wonderful thing out of all three parts and fully draws the viewer back in to Middle Earth, which is never ever a bad thing. : ) P. S. You are so right about not giving in whenever life seems to look bleakest. God, you are so wonderful Duaffy. I hope that you never, ever lose that radiant spark.

14:22 - In the book this is actually a bit ridiculous: Smaug wears an chest armour made of precious stones with a single small hole. About the books. Tolkien has only published The Hobbit and LOTR. Everything else are collections of various things he wrote that his son found after his death and put together and edited. The Silmarillion is the most complete collection. The other books are just collections of different versions of the same stories that you can read in The Silmarillion so if you're a real nerd, you can spend money on them, but I wouldn't.

Don't worry about making people upset that you like the movies. The movies on their own are good. The thing is The Hobbit movies story is not what I could call cannon to the lore of Middle Earth. It is just an interpretation of the book. The Hobbit is a children's book and if you ever decide to read it you will realize it is an easy read as compared to The Lord of the Rings. After Tolkien wrote The Hobbit he incorporated it into the world of Middle Earth that he was creating on the side. The Silmarillion which was published by his son after his death tried to paint a picture of the lore of Middle Earth. The movies are all interpretations of that story and probably the best to date. Once you do start reading you are going to realize how things fit together for good or bad.

Very glad you enjoyed this film, Duaffy. And really enjoyed your reaction to whenever Smaug was on-screen. Smaug is actually an extremely important character in ALL Dragon Lore. When he was growing up, Professor Tolkien was always fascinated by Dragons. He felt that they were the greatest foe any human could face. However, around the time of the Renaissance, people stopped taking Dragons seriously. And about 200 years later, when Dragons made a comeback to the world of fantasy literature, they were NOT the titanic forces of nature that they had been in the myths from ancient times. They had gone SOFT, looked quirky and silly, and some of them would rather do things like drink tea and compose POETRY than fight knights (I'm looking at you, Reluctant Dragon!). This greatly offended Tolkien, so he set about reaching back into the Dark Ages and earlier to pull the best qualities of the Dragons in their myths and legends to create the Dragons that would populate HIS land of Middle-Earth. Smaug was the first of these Dragons that Tolkien created, and he created him by drawing heavily on two specific Dragons from Dragon Lore: the nameless Dragon from the epic saga Beowulf, and Fafnir from Iceland's Volsungasaga. And it WORKED. Smaug became the Dragon that set the new standard for ALL Dragons in modern fantasy literature that would follow, and this would also spread to the silver screen as well. Two of the best examples (as well as two films I would LOVE to see you react to at some point) are "Dragonslayer" from 1981 and "Reign Of Fire" from 2005. In fact, Reign Of Fire to this day remains my absolute favorite Dragon movie of all time.

@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 3 года назад
This is q. interesting comparison with Venice :) Although Laketown was on the north-eastern part of MiddleEarth so for me it is more comparable to early medieval Kievan Rus towns of merchants and mercenaries. Also known as Varangians - it was a part of vikings who in early medieval age explored later Russian, Belarussian, Ukrainian, and Lithuanian territories. And I think that some of the wooden architecture and clothing of Jackson's Laketown was actualy stylised a bit on Varangians and Kievan Rus towns. But about Venice - the only other comparison I could make between Venice and Laketown is that both of those cities were corrupted by greed :) And both were ruled by oligarchy - rule of the group of the richest citizens. Even though Venice was supposed to be a republic (of those richest merchants) and in Jackson's Laketown citizens are only whispering about "election".

The movies are NOT objectively bad if you don't compare them to the previous films and or books. Since I'm very familiar with The Hobbit I knew right away that Tauriel wasn't in it. Let's face it Tolkien's world was a sausage fest. I didn't mind though. She was a good character and the forbidden romance angle was fun.

Duaffy M&S I am strongly considering getting a vaccine in the future to help me avoid getting the flu again. Living alone with only my dog I do not get exposed to the flu often, so my immune system gets hit hard at those times when I do get the flu. So exposing my immune system to the yearly flu vaccine would help a lot I think.

Your accent is phenomenal, I wish I could listen to it all the time. The basic plot of the movies are pretty much the same as the book, its the small details that diverge from the book. Most of the action is in the third movie, so you should really enjoy it. The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the Silmarillian are the only books that JRR Tolkien wrote, the other books were either put together by his son or agents to his estate.

The problem with the Hobbit films is the legacy of Lord of the Rings films. In both the films and the books, the Hobbit is lighter and softer than LotR, so the lighter tone is not the problem, and arguably the films are darker and edgier than the book anyway. However, in order to pad what was a lot shorter book to equal length on film, a lot more attention is given to Gandalf & co. dealing with the necromancer of Dol Guldur (in the book Gandalf had already done his sneakifying in there by the time the story begins) a handful of character subplots (Tauriel's character is a completely new addition, Legolas was originally created for LotR, Azog's and Thorin's vendetta) and and the various setpieces along the way, plus a few additional ones, resulting in a trilogy that is quite different from the Lord of the Rings films.

Thorin would definitely be burned by river of gold and Smaug would be dead (he isn't armored inside and gold should lit into his nose, mouth, ears...etc...). In book they hid in small cave and he thought they are dead from his fire so he flew to Esgarot (lake town).

Tolkien throughout all his books tried to subtlety show how evil worked into the souls of those arround them. Morgoth died then sauraun took his place. Smaug wasn't always evil but was convinced that his strength and power was something he deserved to subjugate and control others and greedy dwaves were evil and smaug was the purifier of Dwarven scum. And burned them all. . . . In silmarilion. When sauron made the 13 rings. To rule them all the men were corrupted quickly. The dwarves just got greedy and several rings for the Dwarven kings were eaten by dragons. Influenced by evil. To destroy Dwarven vermin that had resistance mostly to saurauns influence. Except digging and gold. The elves chose to not wear the rings and Gandalf had one of them. But the reason Gandalf lived the Hobbits. They had no rings Sauron never felt threatened by Hobbits. Arrogant in his might. The spiders were spreading evil into legolasses father making him angry and suspicious. It is a theory of mine what do you think because when Tolkien wrote this it was world War 2. Felt orbs were like Germans Hobbits were the children sent to the country where they were safe from bombs to live with relatives. His life and ours today have that same feel. . . . If I may we live in a dark time of facisim my country yours Europe America. . . How did we get here you are a sweet lady I like to think I'm helpful and I like to work build do kind things. I belive in the rights of women gay people transsexuals people that just want to have equal rights (socalisim I guess) or maybe Christian values) to be not spit on hated or marginalized no mater what religion or skin color). Not whispered into hate, preprejudice, discrimination. I was arround in the 60s and 70s where we thought we gained civil rights and Equality. Maybe the 2nd age of middle earth. Seems like we still got plenty of evil to address. If you listen to the winds of discontent you become discontented tou listen to hope and ❤️ you become loved and hopeful. I think that was his message. Why I like Tolkien

•Man, your review of this particular part of the film is well timed. The films highlight the blatant corruption of the government of Laketown, with the Master and his deputy being lazy, greedy, selfish, and gluttonous. •In the books, Thrain is captured and dies in the dungeons of Dol Guldur. •This is more of a "Chewie, we're home" kind of scenario. You see it in Balin's face, as he hasn't seen Erebor for 60 years. •Kingsfoil, or Athelas as it is known to the Elves, is the same wild herb Aragorn sends Sam to find when Frodo was stabbed by the Witch King on Weathertop. To Humans and Hobbits, it's just another weed, but the Elves know of its healing properties. •Sauron uses The Necromancer as an alias and Dol Guldur is a secondary base for him, where he can strike at the Elves of Mirkwood and Lothlorien. The bulk of his armies are still in Mordor, but he came here to be hidden from the White Council and Gondor. •When Frodo says his name is Underhill at the Prancing Pony, he was referencing this scene when Bilbo stands before Smaug. •In the books, Bard is a member of the Guard and referred to as the Bowman. The Black Arrow was a single arrow, but one he had had since childhood, passed down from father to son for generations. •I remember when I first saw this movie in theaters, I wasn't too happy that they ended it like that, with Smaug on his way to Laketown. I do like the Ed Sheeran song "I See Fire". I recommend you react to it.

When you know the book so well as I do big differences in the movies are actualy helping you to not get bored :) This movie is expanded, developed, and so is more interesting than it would be as stright faithful adaptation. Actualy LOTR is much more faithful adaptation than this - much more. Esp in the topics of adding new invented charachters. LOTR didnt invent new charachters it allowed on the screen only realy importand charachters, those important for the developing of the route of the Ring, cutting most of episodic heroes. But in the new trilogy they invented some new charachters - Alfrid, Tauriel - and expanded those who are living in this area - Radagast, Legolas, Thranduil - but are not mentioned in this book, and gave much screentime to those who were present in those times - Elrond, Galadriel, Saruman - but were not mentioned in the book also.

The two first movies are enjoyable and smaug is amazing ! But I was very disapointing by the last one, in my opinion, peter jackson should have done only two films. However, the thrilogie is not that bad at all, but it can be way better specially for the third film.

If you like the movie, there is no reason to make excuses. It is a very free and embellished retelling of the original Tolkien story, that is all, and so inevitably had to provoke Tolkien fundamentalists. Peter Jackson took what is a pretty short and simple children's book and tried to "expand" it into something that by intention would approach the Lord of the Tings trilogy in epic scope. Entire subplots were added, such as the Elf-Dwarf romance and the character of Tauriel. Legolas was brought in from Lord of the Rings, to further connect the films (I can forgive that; Legolas is a Silvan Elf who could plausibly be present at the outskirts of Bilbo's adventure). As for the "other" books beyond The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion, you needn't worry about those now. They are material Tolkien's son edited and published after his father's passing (as is also true of the Silmarillion, BTW). Mostly they are drafts and variants of the various stories showing how Tolkien developed them over many years, with lots of "scholarly" annotation from Tolkien's son. This stuff is for especially interested readers rather than someone who just want to enjoy the core narratives.

Not sure why any Tolkien fan would object to the whole 'return of Sauron' arc added to the story, since it was, for the most part, happening concurrently with the Quest of Erebor -- I mean, Gandalf literally went off to partake in the Attack on Dol Guldur when he left the Company before entering Mirkwood.
@Cenindo
@Cenindo 3 года назад
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy Yes, supplying the Gandalf story was a decent and understandable addition. In the book, Gandalf just goes away because Tolkien for plot reasons needed Bilbo and the Dwarves to fend for themselves for a while. When Gandalf finally returns, it is told very briefly that he and his peers had been busy throwing the "Necromancer" out of his stronghold. In light of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the expulsion of Sauron was of course FAR MORE IMPORTANT than Bilbo's adventures, except for the very finding of the Ring. Extrapolating what Gandalf was up to and what actually happened at Dol Guldur must be seen as a virtually inevitable addition to the story, given an audience already knowing what will happen in the next generation.

many people are not happy with the hobbit movies because it was not as good or close to LOTR. I mean even LOTR movies changed stuff from the books but is still really loved. When i watched the hobbit in theaters i expected it not to be better than LOTR of course, i even expected it to be worse so i ended up liking the first two, would probably give the Hobbit 1 and 2 like 8 or 9/10 Though i can say with no spoilers i didn't enjoy the last move as much called "the battle of the five armies". But it is as you say this movies are still above an average movie and would give the third one 7/10
