The bridge in Moria was designed specifically that way with no handrails and thin to deter enemies who managed to breach the gates. It was the only way into the mountain once someone got in the gate, and Dwarves being naturally surefooted had no trouble with it, but it forced enemies into a bottleneck and made them extremely easy to pick off.

Sad fact about the tomb in Moria: there are three members of Thorin's company who lie dead there; Balin, Ori and Oin. Balin is in the sarcophagus, Ori is the skeleton holding the book where he wrote the final log entry, and Oin(Gimli's uncle) was eaten by the Watcher in the Water

There is a huge significance to Gimli's gift from Galadriel: Galadriel is a Princess of the Noldor, Elves who lived once in Valinor, the Undying Lands, and while there, Feanor, the Heir to the High King of the Noldor, was infatuated with her beauty, and he asked 3 times for a single hair from her head, but each time she rejected him because she felt something not right within him. Spurned, he created the Silmarills, three jewels of magnificent light captured from the Two Trees of Valinor. Melkor, the Dark Lord whom Sauron himself was just a lieutenant, desired the jewels, and after killing Feanor's father, he stole the gems and killed the two trees so their like could never be made again. Feanor swore a terrible oath to reclaim the Silmarils no matter who possessed them, and fuelling the fire of the Noldor, he persuaded half of them to travel to Middle Earth to wage war on Melkor, whom Feanor now named Morgoth, the Dark Enemy of the World. It is to Morgoth that the Balrogs swear allegiance, and Morgoth alone, though after hundreds of years and many tragedies and losses, one final battle was fought that changed the world and sank the Continent of Beleriand, which once lay West of Middle Earth, and Morgoth was cast out into the Outer Darkness beyond the walls of the world, forever. Sauron fled, as did many Orcs, and some of the Balrogs hid deep beneath the Earth, where much later, the Dwarves would dig too deep and awaken one, who drove the Dwarves from their city of the Dwarodelf, which was renamed Moria, the Black Pit. Galadriel stayed in Middle Earth after the War for the jewels, and felt unworthy of returning home until she could prove herself - which Frodo did when he offered her the Ring, and while tempted, she declined. Gimli's kind words to Galadriel, and the love for his friends and companions, were qualities that Feanor did not possess, so when he asked for a single hair, she gave him what Feanor had asked - three hairs. In the books, every Elf knows the significance of this, and is amazed by what Galadriel did as a gesture of good will, though the history behind why it is significant, is not in the books. The story behind it is in another set of books, and the war for the jewels is in yet another set of books. There are a lot of books.

6:30 They were looking at a veing of Mithril ore that Gandalf was showing them. A happy little factoid: Bill the pony did indeed make his way home to Bree. Boromir wasn't blowing the horn of Gondor to draw the Uruk-hai, it was a call for help. He wanted to keep Merry and Pippin safe, and, not knowing Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas were already preoccupied with fighting, he tried to signal for their aid. The horn of Gondor was also a well-known object/heirloom, even to orcs. Regular orcs would have known the significance of it and the person carrying it, and would have hesitated to attack Boromir out of fear, but unfortunately for him he was not facing regular orcs.

I think Boromir is a truly tragic character. His main flaw is that he cares too much. It's easy to think it's pride or arrogance, but I think he actually just has a deep desire to help the people of Gondor and Middle-Earth and sees it as an unprecedented opportunity. He's obviously light on wisdom to think he can succeed where other greats have failed, or perhaps his desire to finally defeat Sauron, who has menaced his people for an age, overwhelms his better judgment. He cares deeply about the fate of his people which is why he is reluctant to consider Aragorn a worthy King until he sees what he is made of. He also cares about the hobbits after Moria and pleads for their time to mourn. His empathy becomes his flaw that the One Ring uses to corrupt his will. I think this is why his heroic death hits so hard for me because he was a good man who does all he can to his last breath to make up for his weakness. How many of us are empathic and yet lack the internal fortitude or ability to meaningfully help others?

Too bad this is a CHAIN SHIRT ... which SHOULD HAVE given Frodo a broken rib or two because of that stab by the Troll, because even though mithril doesnt allow anything to penetrate ... it is still FLEXIBLE (as shown when Bilbo gives it to Frodo) and thus would give in to the spear. As they show it in the movie ... Frodo should be DEAD, because his ribcage would have been collapsed by that force. [Along the same lines ... Iron Man in the Marvel movies should suffer severe internal injuries every time he lands (= stops INSTANTLY from flying speed) because the internal organs of a NORMAL HUMAN are "kinda moveable inside a body".]

Favorite scene: Boromir's death and redemption. It's the culmination of his story arc and it's pretty epic, even if it's sad. Favorite character: Aragorn. The gradual reveal of his character throughout the film is intriguing, especially considering how shifty he starts off in Bree. Favorite weapon: Narsil, the sword that cut the Ring from Sauron's hand and now rests in shards in Rivendell. Second place for me goes to Sting, which features both a beautiful design and a pretty cool special ability to glow in the presence of orcs.

Best scene and of course culminating with Gandalf's fall and legendary line "Fly, you fools!" Favourite character - Boromir When I was younger I always thought he was a baddie but after reading the books and rewatching movies I think he is the most relatable character. His homeland his on the brink of destruction and his father's, the Steward of Gondor, rule is fading and Boromir feels the need to defend his homeland and to his father. When he is presented with the ring of power he sees it as a opportunity to protect his country and his father. He tries to take the ring because the ring plays on his need to do those things. Favourite weapon - Sting That thing glows

3 hairs is a reference to the 3 Silmarils. It’s a very long story so just know it means a great deal to Legolas and he’ll trust Gimli from now on. The Extended Edition of The Fellowship of The Ring actually really helps flesh out a lot of stuff that unfortunately wasn’t really explained in the Theatrical Editions. I was wondering in The Return of The King how the lembas which looked like lousy bland whey bread was giving Frodo and Sam enough strength to go up the Steps into Mordor, the Extended Edition of Fellowship explained the tiny bites that are the equivalent of a substantial meal (and of course I found it hilarious when Pippin passed some wind after having four WHOLE pieces of bread 🤣).

12:56 This is actually a very well-thought-out defensive position from the pov of the Dwarves whose kingdom this was. These steps are part of the defense works against anyone invading Moria. Imagine having to fight your way up those steps, against an army of defenders firing arrows at you in all directions. That is another reason for all the narrow bridges (which don't bother dwarves so much, anyway). 16:59 Galadriel is one of the oldest and most powerful Elves in Middle Earth. It doesn't really come up much in the film, but she is the wielder of one of the three Elven Rings mentioned in the prologue (Gandalf and Elrond have the other two). She was born in the far west, in Valinor the Undying Lands, and she rebelled when coming to Middle Earth. She has been waiting to be allowed to go back home for over seven thousand years. Also, her daughter was Arwen's mother. She is very distantly related to Aragorn, since he is a direct descendant from Elros, Elrond's twin brother (they were the children of two unions of Men and Elves--so were given the choice to be Elf or Human, but Elros chose to be counted as a Man, a choice Arwen also has available to her). Another important detail is that Galadriel and Gandalf are very close friends, and she never totally trusted Saruman. 18:34 This is a wonderful, tiny detail. Frodo has grown in stature and natural strength over the last few months. So much so he can now converse with another Ring-Bearer without speech. A little bit. (Later Elrond and Galadriel have such a conversation--because they are both Ring-Bearers, i.e. the Elven Rings). This of course is her version of what Bilbo did when he saw the Ring again. But...she passed the test. She was able to resist it.

The Mr. refers to Galadriel's people as "the Wood Elves" a couple of times, but -- to be pedantic -- only some of the inhabitants of Lothlorien are Silvan (Wood) Elves (although most of Legolas' people are). Galadriel, Celeborn, and the other more powerful residents of Lorien are Noldor, a.k.a. "Deep Elves": gifted warriors, craftspeople, and loremasters who came back to Middle-Earth from the Blessed Realm.

Boromir, Boromir and Boromir. He is the best character. He is so complex , I love his struggle between duty and honour (hence why he tries to take the ring but somehow we see that he does feel guilt.) But also Sean Bean is just a legend. My favourite scene is his death, because even though it's gut wrenching to see him die, he has a real heroes death. That and watching him reconcile with Aragorn, show that he would have followed his King and his admittance that he did try to take the ring and he was wrong. It's just a brilliant ending to the character. And as for weapons, yeah, swords good, but nice to have a shield too.

The elves of Lothlorien are not "wood elves." You're thinking of the elves of Mirkwood (Legolas's people). The elves of Lothlorien are "high elves." Their queen, Galadriel is one of the oldest and most powerful beings in Middle-Earth. If I remember correctly, she is also Arwen's grandmother, as Elrond married her daughter.
@jeandoten1510
@jeandoten1510 3 года назад
Actually the elves of Lothlorien are mixed between Sindar and Noldor. Galadriel's husband Celebrimbor is a Sindarin elf who never journeyed to Valinor--albeit ancient and high-born; a relative of Thingol. Jackson does kind of muddy things by showing luminescent "wood elves" (except Legolas--huh?) when by rights it is High Elves like Galadriel and Glorfindel who would properly be able to "glow."
@jacobborton3114

I think when I first saw this film my favorites were Frodo and Legolas (those bow action scenes are so cool!), but I do love Aragorn and Gandalf as well. And Merry and Pippen... oh hell, each character is interesting in his or her own right! I'm not sure I can name one single scene from this film because I think the entire thing is beautifully done from start to finish. Fellowship is my favorite of the trilogy. I saw it in the theatre and remember feeling like I got sucked into that world and didn't notice anything else around me for the entirety of the film. Everything from the sets to the lighting to the pacing and the music and the acting... it all was so well done. I probably love the elf scenes best - Rivendell and Lothlorien seemed so magical (the music is perfect for those scenes and the ethereal lighting makes everything seem so unusual). And I love when Gandalf says "So do all who live to see such times... all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." That, and when Boromir is fighting to his death (and keeps getting up, no matter how many arrows hit him) move me a lot. Him calling Aragorn his captain and king makes me cry every single time. Favorite weapon? Probably the bow. Legolas really is cool. But I love the details of most everything in the film. Even the canoe paddles have beautifully intricate carvings on them! It all helps to create this otherworldly feel. Great stuff. :) Thanks for reacting to the films!

Boromir is the best. We see him being skeptical of Aragorn, initially, but quickly comes around when he sees Aragorn's leadership qualities and honor. We also see Boromir treat the hobbits with quite a lot of respect, something the elves, dwarves, and wizards don't do a whole lot of. Boromir is the one who's training them how to fight throughout the film, and he's the one who is always looking out for them the most, trying to make sure they are healthy, trying to give them time to grieve for Gandalf, and rushing to their defense when they are in danger. Even when he tries to take the ring, that scene begins with him expressing genuine concern for Frodo, it's just the evil of the ring begins to affect him. The elf and dwarf are too busy squabbling with each other, and trying to argue with Gandalf about their course of action to really pay much attention to the Hobbits. Aragorn is mostly focused on the needs of the mission, keeping the big picture in mind. Gandalf is so busy dealing with everyone's bickering and trying to guide Frodo by the safest path. That leaves Boromir to really be the glue that holds the fellowship together. Boromir is the fellowship's mom. It's fitting that it's Boromir's death that causes the fellowship to split up.

In the books, Tolkien uses the term goblins to refer to Orcs. They're all the same being, and were not meant to be separate creatures in the books. Basically Tolkien would refer to Orcs in caves as Goblins and in mountainous areas as Mountain Orcs. The reason Gandalf looks so confused and has no memory of Moria, is due to the last time he passed through, he was coming from the other side. Also, at that time Moria was fully under the control of the Dwarves, and between that time and the film Orcs had invaded and slowly took over.

The name Halfling is not derogatory towards the Hobbits. It is what they were called by Men from Numenor (the Dunedain) which is the race Aragorn and somewhat less, Boromir are. The Hobbits are usually about 3 foot to 3 foot 6 inches in height. The Numenorians usually were about 6.5 to 7 foot tall. Thus the Hobbits are half the height of these Men. That is where the name Halfling comes from. Hobbit is the name that the Hobbits gave themselves. In the next book, but not movie, there is a discussion about the name Hobbit with a new group of Humans that are met in that book. There are many channels on RU-vid that go through the peoples and places in the Lord of the Rings and there is usually at least one video on each channel about the origins of Hobbits. There are also things written down by Tolkien in the Appendices of these books and in other writings on the world of Middle-Earth.

In the books, Sam got a little box of soil and a seed from Galadriel's garden - - Sam planted it at Bag End, and it grew into a *Mallorn* tree - - one of the golden trees that Lothlorien is full of. Boromir was given a golden belt; Merry and Pippin received silver belts. Aragorn was given a magical sword sheath, and a large green stone, the *Elessar,* from which he took his kingly name - - Elessar, the Elfstone. The ropes made of *Hithlain* were provided in each of the elf-boats that they took down river - - Sam took a coil with him , thinking it might be useful. One of Sam's uncles was a roper (ropermaker) by trade.

I think my favourite might be Legolas, but that's partially because I love archery and elves

Favorite character over all 3 movies is Sam. In this movie it's Aragorn. Favorite weapon is Legolas' bow. Favorite scene is harder because I love the part between Aragorn and Frodo. "I would have gone with you till the end" but I also love Boromir's final scene with Aragorn and Sam telling Frodo about his promise not to leave him.

Many of my favorite scenes in the movies are where the dialog is almost exactly taken from the books. The exception is Boromir's death--he doesn't say "my brother, my captain, my king" in the books, but I am so glad that Jackson and Walsh wrote those lines. They make me cry every time.

Unpopular opinion: The greatest member of the fellowship is Boromir. The greatest scene (in the movie) is obviously Gandalf vs. the Balrog. The most emotional ones are: 1) Boromirs death 2) The tomb in Moria 3) Frodo leaves Sam and he goes after him.

Aragorn is my favorite character in each movie. Favorite scene would be the chase of Arwen by the Nazgùl. Favorite weapon, a sword (I'm very classical).

Sam is my favorite character. Best part of the movie, Gandalf taking to Frodo about Bilbo sparing Gollum, Boromis redeeming himself and saying goodbye to Aragorn/Strider, and then Frodo recalling it at the end of the movie

I love her reactions. She is critical and sarcastic (these are not bad things), so when something hits for her, when it lands, or when she is impressed by something, you know. P.S. My favorite character is Aragorn, once and future King of Gondor, heir of Elendil and Isildur, and scion of Numenor

She just seems annoyed and uninterested through this whole thing Is she always like that or does she just not like the movie?

It’s the normal. Just my dry personality. I’m definitely enjoying the movie.

Choosing a favorite member of the Fellowship is like asking a parent to choose a favorite child, but my top 3 are Aragorn, Sam, and believe it or not, Pippin.
