I gave 4 wks notice when I worked as a financial analyst for the treasurer of a $6B publicly traded company. We were short staffed, I was leaving bc of constant 70 hr work weeks that interfered with raising my sons. I did it so they could hire and I could train my replacement. Everyone including the treasurer stopped talking to me, a hire wasn’t made for 6 months…total waste of my life on my end. I was glad to get out. Bottom line: we are a tool for management, not their friend. Replaceable.

I think more managers need to know and understand this.

When she mentioned that they didn't make her a counter offer, I don't think the point was that she expected a counter offer. Exactly. I left a job yesrs ago and our CEO drove to my office to try and counter offer. And face to face he was so amenable. And I didn’t actually ask for more money I only asked to not be forced to relocate like they were originally forcing. And once he was back in his office he was sending douchey emails about it and was suddenly cold about it and denied everything he said he’d be likely to do. So I confirmed I was leaving. Many years ago, I had a row with the VP of the company, so I typed up a resignation letter on the spot and I told them I would give them 2 weeks notice in the letter. They escorted me out of the building that day, and I was perfectly happy to leave that day. When I offered them 2 weeks notice, I was fully aware they may want me out that day but I felt giving them notice was the right thing to do.. I never looked back. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and just move on. P.S. The VP was a sleeze ball and she had an affair with with one of our clients and split up a 25 year marriage. I didn't want to work with her anymore. She got fired 2 years later. I lived happily ever after.

I am a nurse, and have always been an "at will" employee. I have a good friend who gave two weeks' notice and suffered this same thing. I learned that "at will" GOES BOTH WAYS. They don't have to have a reason for firing you, and you don't have to have a reason for quitting. For the first time in 32 years with a spotless, impeccable record, I encountered an impossible situation (related to some impossible people at work), I met with my boss (a "pumps and pearls" nurse who hasn't been in the clinical area since she graduated from nursing school) with my politically correct nicely worded effective immediately resignation letter in my pocket. I listened to her chastise me and make a "plan for improvement" for me, then I slid my letter across the desk without a word and enjoyed seeing her open the envelope, study my note, and enjoyed even more seeing her big fat brightly lipsticked mouth drop open so wide a truck could have driven through it. There were a few moments of awkward silence as she read my short but sweet note and she said "You don't mean this!" I said "Yes I do. It's been a pleasure and an honor working with my colleagues" I had already cleaned out my locker, and I turned my back on her and walked out.This was my day off, so I did not abandon my patients. Now the company (HCA) has a new policy--the 401K match money is only paid on Dec 31st--if you are fired or resign prior to that time, you don't get your match money. I'm pretty sure this is because of people like me. THANKS, HCA, for lying and disrespecting all the RN's who give so much so you can look good and make lots of money. Maybe this is why your company is going tits up and taking on water.

I feel for her. When I was laid off from a job they gave me a 2 week notice which I appreciated, but I wish they would have just walked me out. I worked in a department that worked with upper management closely and no one spoke to me AT ALL until the last day. When two people did and asked how I was doing, what was I going to do I looked at them, smiled, picked up my things and walked out the door.

I bet management wonders why productivity dropped and more people are leaving. Having some experience leaving jobs I tell them I am leaving and do they need two weeks notice. (Most don't). Unless I am burning a bridge. Then I make sure they remember the fire. And for those of you who believe in NEVER burning bridges, you have not worked for the right company. By the way, I am 65 with 44 years experience still playing the game. I quit giving a wet poop about what management thinks of me over 20 years ago. I am hired to fix things and get things done. And I do not suffer fools. Labor or management.

BTW, the 2 week notice WAS customary, before about 1970. When almost every stats adopted "at will" hiring and firing, the 2 week notice went away or should have. Back in the old days, the company also gave 2 week notice.

Really, most just do the 2/3 weeks notice because they care about the business not struggling to fill role. Plus leave with a reference. If she did not care, she could have just left. So they reward her by minimizing her ability? Truly mean and uncalled for.

Difference between employer and employee is that the employer is the pay master and holds all the cards. I have seen employers just blocking emp access cards, the employees hang around for a few more hours to know they are terminated.

Just found this video. This hits close to home as my current employer is so similar. The culture is awful. I cam imagine them handling me leaving with a "bullying" response. They have no care, empathy, leadership, value, respect for anyone. During my 4 years there, several employees have passed away. They didn't even care to attend 2 of them. That's how much they DON'T CARE. I need to get out but don't want to jump into anything else that could be even worse. I know what I want and am working towards it. But in the meantime, working in a toxic environment is very hard.

I don't think a 2 week notice is necessary when a company can fire you at anytime. Does a company say hey we are going to let you go in 2 weeks. Yes, if you plan on working at that company again a 2 week notice is a good idea, if you have no plans of ever going back just resign on the spot

In this area for decades and across industries, of you give a 2 week notice you should expect to be fired with cause (they provide a justifiable cause) up to and including bad things to have on your record. Sometimes you can immediately quit before the t's are crossed and the i's dotted thus preventing a formal termination; no guarantees what end up in the company's records. Most companies expect a 4 week notice for an executive position.

Many companies nowadays are so arrogant. If you work for one of these toxic companies, not only should you not give them any notice, just quietly clean out your office over a couple weeks time, then just stop showing up. Don't even bother telling them that you left their employ. Let them figure it out. F* them!

@15KHPCLUB

I'm in an at-will state which means you or your employer can terminate employment at any time for any reason. Therefore I never gave a two week notice Now that I am an employer, I don't hold anyone to that expectation either. These managers have no issue leaving you high and dry, however feel so entitled when you do so and would retaliate so as long as they can get away with it.

2 week notice is only if you planning to one day maybe come back to work for that company. Otherwise you are wasting your time. Employees are only well oiled machines that are replaceable in a day or so. Better use those 2 weeks to rest and prepare yourself for next chapter in your life.
