With the recent releases of BB ceramic, the two Chronos, BB58 gold and silver editions Tudor continues to be a very exciting brand right now! The quality of the movement allows this.
Having been done in partnership with the Marine Nationale divers, it's good to see that it puts paid to commonly received wisdom about dive watches: that they MUST have an unidirectional bezel; that they MUST have a stupidly high depth rating; that they MUST have a helium escape valve for serious diving
I have a Pelagos but I can almost guarantee that I will be adding one of these to the collection. Different from the standard Pelagos yet still superb. I really do see the Pelagos line as the most modern iteration of a mechanical diver. Fantastic and can’t wait to see the full video.
I completely agree. I have the LHD and am looking forward to adding this piece to my Tudor collection. I do love that Tudor is not afraid to ‘step out’ from the norm. As an owner of the P01, this is very evident. Not sure about the Velcro strap, but….
I agree 100% I own the blue and just added the FXD yesterday. I was on the fence not only because of the color but also because it doesn't have a date or bracelet option. That being said, I have no regrets. The FXD is a very nice and extremely legible watch.
i like it for the simple fact that it does everything on the tin. It’s made for the marine nationale and it does that job perfectly by catering to everything they need within a watch. I’d rather have a normal Pelagos but I also kinda want this because it’s so different…..
Great little show Adrian, loved your thoughts on it! The fact the case is thinner certainly attracts me! The dimensions maybe 42 but as you say it looks like the case is slightly smaller than the bezel! I like the fact it has the fixed bars as does my CWC! This isn’t a dress piece and you gotta say bravo to Tudor!
It's a countdown bezel. You set the minutes to the minute hand and you can see how many minutes are left down to the pip at 0. I think countdown bezels actually make more sense.
@@PepRex this watch isn’t intended to be used as a dive watch which needs a regular unidirectional bezel. It’s used to calculate “headings” and “courses” under water. Basically, you calculate your “path” underwater before the dive and memorize how long you have to: - head this way at X km/h and then - make a 14% turn right and then this other way for X seconds. - etc. Combat divers from the marine nationale will dive in pairs with a lifeline, one with the instruments (to calculate depth; compass; etc). The other will do the timing to precisely switch course at the right time in the often pitch dark of an underwater night dive. So they need to be able to reset the timer quickly, hence the bidirectional bezel and the countdown. Hope that helps

The whole fixed lug thing seems like a they are trying to fix a non existent problem... Also makes the watch a instant no go for me. The bracelet was one of the best things about the pelagos.
I had a spring bar escape on me before while swimming with a dive watch(on a nato thank goodness) and I heard the Moki Martin story about his spring bar failing. I think it's very unlikely problem, but I don't think it's non existent.
That is one sturdy looking watch, it looks just about bombproof I think I like it. Also I am extremely impressed with the amount of self control it must have taken to wait till the end of the video for a watch that only takes NATOs before mentioning B&J straps. 😈😇 You surprised me with that, I thought we'd get the plug on the first minute. Tried it on today. Must say I was pleasantly surprised not a big titanium fan but I have to say it works with this one. Color subtle but great also was thin in a nice way
Now this is a proper tool watch. Form meets function, classy and different. I'm excited about Tudor right now. The Ceramic is another example of doing things slightly differently whilst being relatively affordable. Thanks Adrian.

Went to see this yesterday at the AD. Wore my LHD so I could compare. The new one wears noticeably smaller and is a fair bit lighter, even with my LHD being on the rubber strap. The blue is very different to the blue of the regular Pelagos, much more so like the blue of the BB58. The watch looked so good on the fabric strap, not quite as impressive on the rubber. The AD confirmed there will only be 140 pieces this year with M.N 21 on the case-back and the real delivery numbers will begin from next year with M.N 22 on the back.
Really like this. Looks like it could be tough as an old boot. Nearly lots my Seamaster a few times with exploding springbars so like the looks of the solid strap bars.
I think the graduations on the bezel are marked for every minute leading up to the big triangle (zero) because you need an accurate reading the closer you get to zero. With it being a countdown bezel, there is a greater need to understand/know how close you are to zero. To me it makes sense but what do I know.
But why then have 4 markers after the zero pip? It makes it unbalanced. When I first saw it I knew something was just _off._ Then Adrian pointed out the bezel markers and the cause of my discomfort became clear.
Looking forward to your thoughts and pics when you get hands on. Think the minute marker layout on bezel is a throwback to the Mil Sun bezel, 4 markers to 10 and 3 to 50. Also can’t help but think there are a lot of similarities with the Ben Ainsley Titanium, fabric strap, no date Yacht Master.
I think it’s a very purpose built piece, similar to the prior pelagos, which I’m assuming is why they kept it within that product line. I LOVED my blue pelagos, and this watch also speaks to me. I’ve owned quite a few diver/tool watches and the pelagos was very much that. It was imposing, built like a tank, all brushed, very mono. It never tried to be anything else. Sometimes this was to a fault because I simply couldn’t make it work in certain situations. This new iteration seems to follow exactly that, and I think it will be great.
All I really want is a thinner and smaller Pelagos. I had a blue Pelagos for a while and loved everything about it but it’s size. I guess that’s just part of what makes it the Pelagos, but still, can’t help but to dream.
I almost love it. I didn’t notice the bezel marker disparity until you pointed it out, so now that bugs me. And, while I like the blue, I’d really go for a black version. If I’m being picky I’d prefer fewer than 4 lines of text. But again, I love it, almost.
I have moved away from divers and military style watches, but this one could bring me back. I really love the design, and the fixed bars. I spent 22 years in the military and never wore metal bracelets. I bought a Tudor BB36 just a few weeks ago, and if this had been available, I probably would have got this instead.
I really like it. That’s a real tool watch that also looks sporty. As you said Tudor could have created a new range but I think it makes sense to be in the Pelagos line. If they want to release another version (maybe in black 🤩) they can still call it the Pelagos FXD and have uniform family. Regarding the press photos I like the one at 5:52 but you’re right James’ photos « speak » to me more too. Looking forward to see your hands-on video !
I like the darker blue tone of the dial. The idea of the integrated lugs is very cool, but the bracelet on the original Pelagos is so great, it would be a hard sell to give it up. No matter. I haven’t the budget for either. But I’m still very pleased with my blue bezel OG ETA Black Bay.
I love it. I love that it is thinner, darker dial, titanium and if the bezel works for the Marines then it is good enough for me. People have criticised that it is not 500m water resistant but the Commandos don’t need that depth. People don’t realise how deep 200m is.
Criticising it's not a 500m is VERY funny when you know that the pure oxygen from combat swimmers rebreathers become toxic at the pressure of 1,7 bar. Which is.. 7m. So 200m is pretty more than enough when you'll never dive under 6m... And even for civilian or air using divers, 200m is more than enough when most of the dives are made above 60m..
Tbh I like this watch. Of course there is a lack of options for a bracelet or strap but the pure utility look just seems cool to me. IMO this case fits nicely with the vintage toolwatch design
GREAT GREAT GREAT watch....and good price too ! Better color of dial and bezel, good grip of bezel and crown, slimmer case, less "strange 3d" dial. I love it ! I didn't notice the minute mark lack on the bezel around 20,30,40,50 minute. Cheers from Italy
Interested to see the hands on Adrian! The markers on the bezel follow suit with the old Rolex milsubs, always 4 marks before and after the 12 o’clock triangle and up through the 15 minute mark, then 3 marks on. Not sure why it’s done that way but the old omega seamasters were the same way, I’m guessing it’s a specific milspec thing. On the pelagos fxd it just looks even more different because of the countdown bezel.
the four lines between 55 and 15 on the bezel are for timing... the others are for the degrees used in navigation. EDIT: or not, just noticed the spacing of the lines being the same, so it is just a weird design choice...
I love it!!! Could you check the crown guard side proportion when you check the real watch? Two thing Pelagos has been bothered me are Dial and Crown guard. Dial seems cleaned up! As the thickness also has been reduced, I hope the Crown guard has top & bottom equal proportion! Yes.... I do hope they will make a special bracelet for this one... It looks like good design for easy change type of bracelet!
I think I need to see it in the metal. The fixed lugs add to the tool watch feel, but the slimmer design will be offset by the strap thickness. And whilst academic in my case, I'd have liked to have seen 300m plus on the depth rating, to make it more Pelagos and move it away from the BB range.
Interesting. Tudor have announced quite a few new watches, or versions, this year that do not come with a bracelet. Only the BB58 bronze comes with a bracelet option and new clasp.
Love it .. I'd like a 40mm version even though I've a big wrist .... hope the dial and bezel insert are matched in colour , my Pelagos is slightly different ...
Adrian, the term you're thinking of in regards the brand Velcro becoming the name of the product is genericization. Xerox is the example I always remember. It was the brand name for the company that made the printers and scanners, but then the term Xerox became applicable for all printing and scanning activities regardless of the brand being used.
I don't know if this will be enough to sway me away from my BB58 Blue. This is a cool watch, but I think the original Pelagos is still the one I would go with.
So happy with thinner design - that's what annoys me with my Pelagos. But you're right, the bezel is way too busy -- also the lack of date makes it too impractical for me (you didn't think I leading marine assault missions in my day job, did you)

Great video and great watch. I am surprised that you did not talk about the fact that this bezel is a countdown bezel. Why did they change? Why in the past it was not a countdown but "countup". I would appreciate learning more about this aspect :-) Have a great week-end!
i agree the bezel is sort of a mess. the 4 intermediate marks are not only adjacent to the 12/triangle, but also on either side of the 10. the obvious solution to me is just smaller numerals, to fit the full scale.
I tried it on today. It did not sit well in my wrist. There was a large gap where the strap joins the lugs. I know it’s designed for easy fitting of the strap but the trade off is it sits too proud of the wrist. The AD has a larger wrist than me and he found exactly the same issue when he tried it on.
Agree with the part about the minute markers on the bezel. One more on both sides of the 10, compared to the other numbers, is really annoying. At the triangle it's maybe more OK as the closest ones are smaller.
lol the minute markers being flipped on the bezel is giving me a headache looking at it lol. Beautiful proportions... how i wish the numbers werent flipped.
Hook and loop fastener should have been the term to replace Velcro. A bit of trivia: velcro is a portmanteau for “velours” and “crochet”, ie velvet and hook.
I'm excited to try it on! Not sure if it beats out the Pelagos LHD in my "need to get" list, but the bezel is awesome. It's a great move by Tudor to hark back to a more toothy, Sub-like bezel. A bracelet would rule, but I guess that's Tudor's new thing to offer an amazing watch that has no bracelet option(See>BB58 925). Also, 40mm would be a perfect case size. Regardless, it's a very cool, exciting new direction for the brand.
They should have used screw in bars with no spring, the rest is pukka, interesting the it has more markers at the 10, that's an error for the eyeballs and untidy but I guess underwater you will use the 10 minutes for direction finding much more. I can see the 500m pelagos getting a four line text update next though.
Loathed it from the leaked photos, but the more I see it, the more it makes sense to me. I own the LHD, a watch I coveted for a few years before I finally got one. Probably my most worn of my collection. Wear it to work in a brewery, use the bezel daily. This new bidirectional one is just more practical. So is water resistance, with elimination the superfluous HEV. The bracelet is one of the reasons I adored the Pelagos, but mostly wear on a MN strap now, so the fixed lugs don’t put me off in the least. Of the 50atm trio, mine has the finest colour way, but the new blue of the FXD seems so much richer than it’s heftier counterpart. If they release a southpaw version, I’d be tempted to add, maybe even replace a spot in my collection.
Kinda gives me the seiko vibe of that limited edition throw back release. Cant remember what it was called but was 4-5k I think. Similar look and feel.
The guy who flogs straps for every watch possible gets solid lugs in a gorgeous watch and wants a bracelet? Seriously? I laughed out loud... It's a gorgeous watch and you're right, there is enough difference here to warrant a whole new line not under the pelagos name
I thought the same thing. Figured it would be right up his ally. Bezel is too busy for me and like you said, it's not really a Pelagos, so I'm not sure why they call it that. Different color ways, strap options, date/no date, or different sizes I could understand. But virtually every feature on the watch is different, including the movement.
It is unfortunate that they didn’t provide an option for the bracelet. The Pelagos clasp its #1 feature. This new version is thinner though…but I think it won’t be that noticeable since the case will have to still on top of the strap.
