As a former Christian, a big realization I had was that the church was trying to control what I was feeling and how I was feeling it. Almost every good and natural feeling you can have is considered sin, unless you are having that feeling for the Lord. I personally don't want to feel shame for the rest of my life and from what I can tell the people that put themselves in that mindset are the biggest bummers to be around.
I was getting emotionally gaslit. In scary situations, like when I was bleeding out in the ER, I was told not to fear, because that’s not in alignment with being righteous. In sad situations, like the death of my own child, not to cry “like the heathen.” Etcetera. Damn ya’ll, I’m gonna cry when I’m sad and scream when I’m scared, OK?!
It's also a false equivalency. When you punish kids or use negative reinforcement its for the purpose of course correction. The concept of hell for many people that use this logic, is eternal and inescapable. There is no course correction
Wow, my donors really loved me a lot of that's the case. Often just because they felt like it and not because I needed any *ahem* "course correction." Oh it definitely hurts them more than the child they are beating though, can confirm. Where did they get these brilliant ideas about such effective "course correction" you might ask? Well, the bible does say spare the rod, spoil the child. My donors were so enthusiastic about not sparing the rod, they'd make us pick out the switches and if we picked one they didn't agree to the choice of, they'd send us back to get another appropriate one and further punish us for our incorrect choices. It's even better when the child is powerless to stop such enthusiastic demonstrations of "love" and have no recourse and then spend decades having to undo all the lessons that such "love" instilled in them, usually with a trained medical professional.

I had a friend who's a former Christian (they grew up in a crazy ultra conservative Christian household) who mentioned the "God/Jesus-shaped hole in my heart" thing to me recently so we could have a laugh. My response is that I have a god-shaped scar in my heart from when I ripped god/Jesus out of my "heart." I became an atheist a decade ago, and I'm still recovering from the trauma of the brainwashing. I'm much better now compared to the few years after I became an atheist, but there are things that still trigger responses.

I grew up in a fundamentalist Baptist church family. The trauma that was done because I was gay and trans 🏳️⚧️ runs deep. Even though I am an atheist now, the brainwashing and CSA I was the victim of has left me severely scarred to the point that even in my 60’s I am easily triggered and have recurring nightmares about it. I’m in therapy, but it has been slow going in dealing with the trauma.
Same. I'm way more mentally healthy now than I ever was while I was getting my twice weekly dose of "you're a worthless sinner", and my daily doses of "you're a terrible person" and "you're so sinful simply because you're a human". Once I dumped God/Jesus, like the abusive boyfriend he is, I started to grow and heal.
My old therapist (who was amazing) couldn't stop laughing when I introduced them to the phrase "God-shaped hole." They were absolutely dying over it, which I honestly enjoyed throughly. Them finding the whole notion so ridiculous was a little bit healing for me 😄
God shaped hole was a phrase that was popularised by the xtian singer "Plumb" with a song of the same name. It was used in all sorts of xtian media, any time there was a particularly poignant moment in a show or movie that song would play. I am sure it was in use before that but that is how the idea spread so far in xtians of a particular persuasion. It caught hold of the zeitgeist and pastors and ministers and especially youth group leaders started incorporating it into everything. We even had "god shaped hole" Sunday where the idea was to bring along a non-xtian so they could learn about the hole and fill the hole.
To quote Hobbes of Calvin and Hobbes fame, "Right. Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?" (by the way, this is in reference to the guy saying that people shouldn't be skeptical)
I just want to say thank you both for helping me deconstruct many unhealthy aspects of “Christianity” that I previously believed in. Although I am still a Christian today, I am thankful I can approach it and practice my religion in much healthier ways rather than constantly feeling like I’m not enough or I deserve to burn because I disobeyed my parents. As a former christian, these videos hit so hard 😭. I hate the fact that a big part of christianity is replacing your whole identity with just Jesus; not allowing you to be yourself or enjoy any of the things you were “made” for. I also just wanted to say that it’s really admirable the way you two treat eachother. You guys laugh and listen earnestly and it’s a really cool thing to see. Thanks for making videos to expose the negatives in some religions:)
I'm an atheist and was raised by atheists. My parents both thought it was incredibly important for us to learn about the Bible and Christianity because of exactly what Taylor said. It comes up a lot, it's referenced a lot, it's a major component of western culture. We learned Greek and Roman mythology for the same reasons.
I was both into an Mormon family. Dear god the extent to which they shame and supress sexuality is astonishing. Those are scars that will be with me the rest of my life
That last video gave STRONG abuser vibes. This is a guy who would probably be pretty great while dating, but once he gets an engagement ring on your finger, everything switches. If I knew that someone was going on a first date with him, I'd show them that exact video. If they didn't run away immediately, I'd start to worry that that person had very low self-esteem.

I mean I was watching a video earlier maybe from the click I can't quite remember. And he spoke about the "God's plan is to never make anyone suffer" then there was kind of like a panning of the camera moment with him saying "what about world hunger?" oh yeah. God was so good he invented deseases to exterminate us like flies or ants and decided to starve some people for no reason what so ever. And before anyone brings the classic garbage idea of: "Because they refused salvation" from what I remember after studying the basics of Christianity in elementary school, God loves anyone, even the people who don't believe in him. Xtians in third world countries are still dying of hunger, they definitely didn't refuse salvation but accepted it wholeheartedly and it didn't change what they were facing. I've also been told that the chronic genetic conditions that developed after I left the church are god's punishment, as if I wouldn't be afflicted with them if I'd remained in the church. As if late onset genetic conditions don't exist, whether you are xtian or not.

I'm Pagan and I think that has made me a better person, but I know that route isn't the best thing for everyone. And it's the same with any religion or spiritual path. It's a highly individual thing... Some people even get worse because of spirituality and religion! It's up to interpretation and very subjective. oh man, the part about christianity being narcissistic is so true but its wild how it also contributed to me being so so so so so so so self hating like not just bc of it saying certain things are sinful etc but also the whole "im an evil dirty sinner nothing i could ever do or say would make me worthy of living i should have died but christ saved me even though im horrible and full of sin" its like such a weird combination with the "christians are morally superior" its sooooooo weird. so glad im not a christian anymore. my deconstruction is prob never gonna be over but im happier now
I've read that vulnerable narcissists are deep down very insecure, leading to the cycle of self-aggrandising and hating oneself. I was raised a pentecostal and taught that I am nothing without God, and I shouldn't find purpose and satisfaction in myself. I wasn't a narcissist, but similarly traumatised to seek validation from outside because I could never be enough by myself (neurodivergency made this even a bigger problem for me than for my sibling). I think that is a part of the 'Christianity being narcissistic' problem.
People don't realize narcissistic traits are coping mechanisms for trauma or letdowns. Everyone is at least a little narcissistic sometimes. Look up the 9 traits. One trait I have had is the belief that things couldn't go right if I wasn't there, partially due to weaponized incompetence used against me, partially because everything was so out of control I'd try to control everything. Fortunately I'm very, very rarely that way anymore, because I'm no longer insecure with the unknown, I ride it, am open to change and adapt instead of digging my heels in, wanting my way, and thinking everyone else is dumb. Each trait is a way to ignore reality or try to control it, and they of course come in different severities, but narcissism IS maladaptive coping of fear and insecurity People like my dad live perpetually through all 9 traits, literally look up the list, EVERY thing he says or does fits that list somewhere, NPD would not be a surprising diagnosis. My childhood was hell. Even though life got them there, if they don't change they are unlivable.

That's why I advised in an introvert group on Facebook that shy introverts who feel disconnected in moat social situations should avoid evangelical and fundamentalist churches, and then I got slammed for that. It's because they will get love bombed and think they will be loved. They will also be scapegoated for not being able to stand up for themselves. Narcissists prey on weak people, not bad people. Nearly everyone playing in a worship group in church is a narcissist and talentless as well.

i left the church a decade ago, but i still really struggle with feeling like i cannot be sexual without objectifying/being objectified. the way that i was taught about sex and attraction gave me the impression that it's inherently linked to dehumanization, "sin", and general disrespect of oneself and others. i've been trying to unlearn this, because i know it's incorrect and harmful, but it's difficult and, at times, it's painful. thanks for touching on this idea, i feel seen and understood.
Urgh, there's a lot of "People think material success is winning, but having a woman locked in my basement/having a shrine to the death god I visit on the regular is the true win" energy in a bunch of these. I always like to ask them what the teleological purpose for eternal suffering is for a god who is wholly self contained and for which the victim has no recourse and has no opportunity to better themselves from the experience. I think mostly it shuts them up because of all the big words. Which I don't say as an insult but xtianity teaches anti-intellectualism in so many ways. It's why they can be skeptical and critical of everything else but can't turn that same lens on what they believe.
My therapist and I had a real good talk about healthy self-pleasurable activities and how to ACTUALLY make change if the habits are either becoming negative or hurting the people around you. It really boiled down to the fact that your body has to do SOMETHING else. If you just sit and try to distract yourself, all of the willpower or, “strength from god”, won’t matter because it’s so easy to just do the unhealthy thing. Personally, I used to use those habits as a coping mechanism due to trauma, so any time things would go wrong, it’d be my first instinct to level myself out. Chemically my body is dependent and craving that dopamine, right? So if all I’m doing is sitting and trying to shame myself into submission, my brain doesn’t care, it’s seeking the same immediate hit of dopamine. All this to say, the way evangelicals approach unhealthy “lustful” habits is programmed to not work lol. If you want to make change, go outside. Be with friends/family, workout, be creative, etc. Thanks for this video :)
I read in an ex Christian blog about how a lot of Christians go to a church and never find friends there despite people there appearing to be friendly and hanging out with them so they keep moving to new churches. Nearly all of the friendships in evangelical and fundamentalist churches are fake and conditional. Most people lose them when they leave religion or even try another church. Once I started to learn about facial expressions and body language and took that more seriously than the words they came out with, I started to read the people at church better and realised they didn't like me after all. I noticed a lot of eye rolling and scanning around the room when I spoke to them or answered their questions because I didn't give them the answers they wanted. Its why they would get interrupted by someone else when I was speaking to them as they scanned the room looking for someone else to talk to without moving away. Leaving religion is difficult. Society doesn’t understand Christian apostates, so at first, I would say I was putting a pause in religious practice to get my head together.

If they want to make the bible illegal, I am screwed. I have like 13 Christian bibles, three Tanakhs and a Torah. The closest to banning the bible is prohibiting people from shoving ir down kids throats in school. Yea I encourage people (especially Christians) to read the bible. It's a great place to find song lyrics. The song Turn Turn Turn uses bible verses. I plan on using bits from Job as lyrics for a dark and heavy industrial track. Job would also lend itself to metal. I would love to see Slayer do Job.

There seems to be a notion among evangelicals that people are meant to feel lasting happiness. But when you do something that makes you for long enough, its appeal fades. We are driven by our emotions to keep searching for good things. It's for the purpose of survival and reproduction and we repurpose it to pass the time. Nothing on earth will fill "the void" because that would defeat the purpose of surviving
