My opinion bill is the last good companion of Doctor Who Chris Chibnall version of the show in my opinion is complete garbage in my opinion he ruined the show
oh Katrina when you look at the camera cheekily knowing what's in the vault, i automatically wink at you, knowing what's in the vault myself, and Paula doesn't have a clue... interactive viewing lol love it!
@@himanbam There's not 15 series YET (We've only just finished Series 13) - I was making the joke that I seem to prefer series which are multiples of 5!
I was sad we lost Pete in this episode. I miss Pete. I think. I was glad you kept Bill’s perfect “No s…….” line in the edit though! The guy who played Lord Sutcliffe I first saw years ago in a biting satire called ‘Nathan Barley’, as the titular character, who described himself as ‘a self facilitating media node’. The programme covered the media, the pushing of acceptable boundaries, the growth of the internet, pretension, the ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ thing, spin, etc etc and is probably just as relevant today as it was then. It was simultaneously appalling and as funny as hell! Worth digging out if you can find it.
Series 10 is one of my favorites. There's a mid-point slump, but it's never a "well that was awful" more just forgettable lows while the highs are high.
"Do you wanna help me, or do you wanna stand here stamping your foot? Because I'm two *thousand* years old..? And I've never had time for the luxury of *outrage*.." Funny, because, as viewers who know any of his history, from Classic Who, from the Time War, from being trapped 4.5b years (by his own people *after* he'd saved them from the Time War and brought them back), we know that's not *strictly* true: that the Doctor has never raged out, that is.. But 1) the Doctor lies, and 2) it's kinda true in that it's a snap decision the Doctor's had to make many times in the past and that Bill has to make before the situation gets worse.
Exactly! I snorted when I heard him say that in the speech. But I figured he was illustrating that he has to fix the problem first, THEN be outraged. And it was nice to see Bill give him a bit of guff when she saw him be outraged. :)
I know this episode is mostly only remembered as the episode where the Twelfth Doctor punches a racist dickhead in the face, but I think there's so much more to "Thin Ice" that makes it a genuinely great story. For one thing, as is usually the case when the show does an episode set in the past, this episode looks fantastic. The costume design looks amazing - you mentioned Bill's gorgeous Regency era dress and boots, but special mention has to be given to Twelve looking very dapper in his top hat and suit. The whole Frost Fair is realised fantastically, and the scenes of the Doctor and Bill wandering along the frozen Thames and just having fun was really lovely. I also like that proper attention is given to the implications of taking a companion of colour into the past, and the racism she's likely to experience. It's nice that Twelve actually took Bill's concerns seriously, unlike Ten's dismissive attitude towards Martha's similar questions in "The Shakespeare Code", as well as the fact that Regency era London was made to look more multi-ethnic as opposed to what is expected. In addition to being a great period piece, there's also plenty of great character drama. As mentioned, I like all the scenes of our main characters having fun at the Frost Fair, but the script's attempts at more serious drama are also really strong. Bill's reaction to seeing the unfortunate young urchin getting killed in front of her was a really powerful scene, as was her quietly heated interrogation of the Doctor. Sarah Dollard (who wrote "Face the Raven" last series) does a great job with this confrontation, you get both characters' point of view and really understand their views on the subject, and both Capaldi and Mackie perform it fantastically. I also feel like this is the first episode where you really see how much the Twelfth Doctor has progressed as a character since series 8 - he's still somewhat detached and pragmatic when it comes to death, but he doesn't act as cold and callous as he did back then; we get loads of lovely sweet interactions between him and the gang of street urchins (honestly, the multiple interactions between the Doctor and kids has been a wonderful staple of the Moffat era), what with him helping them get off the streets and take ownership of Sutcliffe's mansion; that speech he gives Sutcliffe about the value of human life was a great little monologue; and as you both mentioned, I like how the climactic decision he gives Bill parallels the decision in "Kill the Moon", but this time he hands her the responsibility in a gentle and patient manner, as opposed to how he did it in the earlier episode. And as expected, Capaldi performs all these angles of the character - the passionate adventurer, the ruthless pragmatism, the compassionate hero - fantastically. So yeah, I think "Thin Ice" is not only one of series 10's strongest episodes, but one of the best episodes in the entire Capaldi era. If people look back on it in future, I think it should be remembered as a brilliant period piece that fleshes out the Doctor and Bill's relationship beautifully and offers some nice commentary on poverty, race, and the exploitation of the less fortunate in the name of industry and progress. As well as the episode where the Twelfth Doctor punches a racist dickhead in the face (king shit)
I really wished Bill and the 12th Doctor could have done 1 more season together their chemistry was one of the best in the entire history of the show. That's the thing with Doctor who though you get start getting used to a companion and then they're gone same thing happened with Donna.
This story makes me wish we could get Sarah Dollard back as a writer. SHE WAS SOOOO GOOD! 😭 (Maybe RTD will let her come back. And maybe the awesome Jamie Matheison as well. Chibnall really missed a trick not hiring them during his tenure.)

Some day, how about a bonus reaction collecting the specially-shot Who Teasers from across the years? The one for Series 10 sprang to mind just now, when you mentioned that fresh getting-to-know-you feeling: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AAQPDDX8nhg.html

If you're talking about Bill... nah. She's great, and people ignore her personality because it suits them to lie about her only character trait being that she's a lesbian.
