The thing I love most about Moffat's writing is that he was the first writer in "New Who" to actually explore the possibilities of time travel. It manifests as little things like being able to have a real time conversation with someone 40 years in the future, or how River was able to leave a message for the Doctor in the distant past knowing that he'd eventually stumble upon it in the future and come rescue her.

Yes, he raided the Moghul emperor's treasure ship, as also mentioned in the episode: it was the most successful pirate haul of all time, about £1.4bn in todays money . As a result, he was the subject of the first ever world-wide manhunt, but was never caught.

What I find really interesting is that Every was from Devon. This makes him one of the few pirates who would actually have spoken with the west country `pirate` accent popularised by Hollywood. Here though, Hugh Bonneville just straight up plays him as posh voiced Lord Downton on a boat.

This might be the weakest episode of the series and a bit early for a filler type episode, but I like it. It's meant to be a light, fun episode after the two part opener. For an episode about the Doctor meeting pirates and a siren, I find this episode to be strangely bland. I don't think there's anything particularly bad about this episode, but there's nothing particularly noteworthy either. Amy getting in on the pirate action is a lot of fun, and I do get a kick out of Arthur Darvill's almost-drunk performance when Rory is under the siren's charm. Hugh Bonneville is good as Captain Avery, and there's some atmospheric scenes, but that's about it for this episode. The supporting cast aren't very interesting, the emotional scenes don't really land, the reveal of all the problems being a result of malfunctioning alien tech feels kind of old at this point (after The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace and The Lodger all did this), even Matt Smith didn't seem overly invested in this one. It's probably a result of coming after such a big epic two-part opening, as well as being followed by what is one of New Who's greatest episodes, but I always end up forgetting this episode exists when I go and look back over series 6

I think we did need this fun, lighter episode just for a moment to catch your breath. Its not a brilliant episode nor a bad one just filler esc. I genuinely dislike some of "historic" episodes in Doctor Who that are based on popular modern genres - this one is like that where the pirate genre bores me so much. There will be future episodes in 12 era that are also as dull. Vikings was one, the one with famous "archer" was awful too. We should always only keep ourselves to some unknown historic events that generic Joe won't know about or some more epic or supernatural well known events. Like I even prefer 13th historic episodes which just show the historic event with awful background plot than this dullness.
@Mrazmatmahmood
@Mrazmatmahmood 3 года назад
Man, this episode is so boring. It has an interesting concept with two ships existing in the same space, but in different universes. However, the execution is so dull and laboured. The twist that the Siren is just a medical droid is also lame and the whole idea that the Siren is super smart, but can't distinguish between a minor cut and someone actually dying is just dumb. Also, why didn't attempt to heal any of the crew members on it's own ship? They were just left to die it seems like. The side characters are incredibly flat too, they exist to fill the numbers and give the Siren someone to pick off. Hugh Bonneville gave a good performance as Avery, but he had very little to work with. Rory's "deaths" were beyond ridiculous at this point. They were attempting to be all emotional at the end, but I couldn't take any of it seriously at all. I know I said last week that my problems with Matt Smith's era had very little to do with him and a lot more do with the writing, but I guess I was wrong. He was so annoying in parts of this episode. The cold open is the perfect example, popping up and saying "yo ho ho". Just ugh. This episode shows how differently he's playing the Doctor compared to last series. Most of my annoyances with 11 post S5 are present in this episode. Just a bad episode.
