Amy’s ganger is actually a vessel for her consciousness, not a second “person” with the same memories. At least that’s how I’ve always interpreted it.

Yes, these gangers only became conscious beings because of the solar storm. The Flesh Amy was just a copy, an 'avatar' so to speak. It had no mind of it's own.

Right. The time they visited was the point in history when flesh doppelgängers “began” as the Doctor put it. So he needed to understand what their nature was. But Amy’s doppelgänger is more like how they were previously used as extensions, of the consciousness of the humans hosting them. Amy’s physical body was asleep somewhere slowly growing pregnant while her mind and consciousness was being projected into her doppelgänger believing she was still with Rory and the Doctor the whole time.

Yeah, that's definitely how it works, and the Doctor knew it. That's why he told the Amy ganger he was coming for her: he knew it was really Amy controlling the ganger, and he wanted her to know that no matter where she's about to wake up, he and Rory are coming for her.

No. At 17:24 "Given what we've learned I'll be as humane as I can but I need to do this *and you need to stand away!*" The Doctor is angry that he has to kill the flesh avatar he just learned is a real person - Amelia Pond no less. Rory figures that out when he realizes he's not talking with the weird uncle Doctor but instead the angry god Doctor.

@@Disillusioned_JELly I interpret that as the Doctor trying to be as humane as he can to Amy, because she's unaware of what's going on, and it's going to be a colossal emotional shock to her, not that the Amy ganger is a separate autonomous being with its own consciousness.

Amy was flesh before the room with the pictures, because she first sees the eyepatch lady before she enters that room! I suspect she was taken in the Whitehouse bathroom.

I mentioned this in another comment, but you have to wonder why the Silence kidnapped Amy again after she entered the room with all of the pictures? She was already a ganger by then (so they already had the real Amy in their custody somewhere), it doesn't make any sense.

@@cutthr0atjake I could buy that if the Silence weren't so dreadfully unprepared for the Doctor turning up. Let's face it, the Doctor and River owned the Silence at the end. Kidnapping Amy for a second time was a huge mistake and pointless and it led to their defeat.

I'll take two please just like Rory in "time and space" lol Seriously though I think it is to lure the Doctor to them and they didn't want to risk the real pregnant Amy so the fake Amy served their purposes. ALSO, timey wimey confusion maybe the fake Amy served other purposes at that time. I had several theories that probably aren't right on that but that gets complicated sooo the simpler slightly less logical explanation is they weren't done with the real Amy yet even though you see the picture of her with the baby that is from the future of the fake Amy at that point in her time lol soo complicated but so goood :)

It’s confusing at first but no he didn’t “kill” dopple Amy, there never was a doppelgänger. He destroyed a puppet that was being controlled by Amy’s consciousnesses, hence she wakes up when the puppet is destroyed. The other puppets developed into individual sentient beings which made them true doppelgängers. Two completely different things.

If you recall, Amy sees the eye patch lady before she goes into the room where she finds a picture of herself with a baby, so she was already Flesh by then. I believe Moffat has said she was Flesh from the start of The Impossible Astronaut, so she would have been abducted sometime between A Christmas Carol and Astronaut. Can't wait for next episode. Paula's going to need more French Fries! 🍟😀

I actually think.it happened when she was on the run on her own at start of second.episode as in first she says to doctor she thinks she's pregnant and she feels sick at.white house then by second episode she is.fine and says to doctor she was wrong and not pregnant (because she's a copy)

The gangers gained consciousness because of how that vat had 'mutated'. This Amy wasnt an 'independent' sentient copy, she was puppeted unknowingly by real Amy using regular flesh tech. The Doctor said to flesh Amy 'Im coming for you', knowing he was talking to was real Amy remotely. The real Amy wakes up and is shocked to find she's pregnant, because from her perspective she's been walking round with The Doctor for the last 9 months, not an independent copy of her. The gangers had become actually independent, so The Doctor didnt have a double standard by protecting them but 'splatting' Amy.

As people have already said - she would've been taken before going inside that room. Additionally on the point that 'he killed her after just proving that the Flesh people are still people' - For the most part the Flesh are just avatars for the 'real' people. It was just because of the solar storm that the ones on the island were separated from their 'drivers'. So, The Doctor 'killing' Amy wasn't him killing a version of her - it was just him breaking the connection between 'driver' and 'avatar'.

Katrina, in that Silence episode, everyone had a recorder in her hand, they found that on the ground, they were wondering how they took it out. THEY DIDN'T. That Amy was a flesh clone who melted away cause of not stable enough or maybe time was up and they had to put out a new clone to fool The Doctor. You could see later in that episode that the new Amy(flesh clone) later had no markings on her body which she made earlier to count all the Silence dudes..

The Doctor said he thought Amy had been taken before America, which means it was a flesh avatar the entire season. The Amy avatar was not it’s own being like the Gangers in this story. It was Amy’s consciousness controlling it. The Doctor just woke Amy up by destroying her avatar.

The Doctor said he wanted to see the flesh in its early forms to understand it better. I assumed that the version of flesh being used on Amy is more advanced, and more an avatar Amy was unknowingly using, than it was another actual person.

Amy was definitely a Ganger BEFORE she was "captured" by the Silence in the room with the photos. Remember, she'd seen the Eye-Patch Lady in the door to that room a minute earlier. So, she was probably captured earlier, like in the White House. As the Silence automatically erase the memory of anyone who sees them, she could've easily been taken then as she was alone in the Bathroom there.

Remember, the flesh don't normally duplicate a subject's mind; the ones there did because of the freak electrical storm. Normally the subject mentally inhabits them through remote control. That's what was going on with Amy's ganger. So the Doctor didn't kill anyone by disincorporating it.

W Morgan Shepphard was a big crossover guy. He was in multiple star trek series and played multiple characters in Babylon 5. For me though he was always the narrator of the Medal of honour games back in the 90s, one of the first great game voice overs.

I don't exactly know how long she's been flesh, but it was before she was alone at the orphanage. The woman opened the door to the room with the baby picture to get her there. As well as the fact that he said "before America", so in Impossible Astronaut she was already gone. Also, Amy's ganger is different. Instead of making a copy, her consciousness was only in one of them. It's slightly different then the other gangers.

The Doctor didn't kill a copy Amy...the other dobblegangers were the flesh at the beginning of the technology, animated by the storm into real people. Presumably the dobbleganger Amy was made of updated flesh technology and wasn't ever animated into life. Her dobbleganger was just a puppet for the real Amy.

A thing to remember is, the Doctor is fascinated and curious by new things and things he doesnt understand. Whilst others run from the unknown he runs towards it. Like with the rebel flesh, yes he could understand what's going on with Amy more by being there, but at the same time he also wants to just discover everything about them out of fascination. So maybe he could have just not bothered going through all the shenanigans of this two parter and just gone to find the real Amy, but that's not the Doctors style, he NEEDS to interfere enough in these situations to fulfill his desire to know more about everything. As shown by him just melting flesh Amy, its like hes learnt enough and time to move on when he could have taken flesh Amy somewhere far and save to live. He is far from perfect and that's what makes him relatable.

I have been waiting to say this sense the first episode of series 6. There has been one big clue that Amy was a ganger from the first episode. She wares the same cloths in every episode. The only time she changes is into all black in the second episode when they visit the abandoned children's home. I didn't notice and when it was pointed out to me it blew my mind. So obvious yet hidden in plain sight, genius really. This is a very layered episode and I love it. Can't wait for next time oh boy next time.

I re-watched from 9th doctor on from last October through January (where Amazon dropped it in prep for the deal with HBO Max getting it, so I was a couple episodes into the 12th Doctor's second season so I had to wait until late May to resume). I really enjoyed revisiting it, especially some of the 12th Doctor stuff I had only seen once time around. But the early stuff I had on while I was working so I wasn't paying as close attention to it as I should. Debating starting ...again, and paying closer attention to take it all in. But first, finish my re-watch of Torchwood, which I haven't seen since the original air dates.

15:32 I actually had an uncle who, when he was two years old, wandered into my grandfather's greenhouse and licked the cap of a caustic pesticide. The acid burned down his throat and through to his heart. Obviously this was a long time ago, my own father wasn't yet born. What makes it a little eerie for me is that I am apparently the spitting image of that uncle. My grandmother even once mistook me for him the final time I saw her before her death.

Nope Amy been flesh before S6 but after S5 if you remember she saw the eyepatch woman before she get kidnapped by the silence. Also flesh Amy wasn't an individual she was just a vessel for the real Amy consciousness unlike the other flesh who gained there owned consciousness because of the storm.

A lot of people are saying that Doppel-Amy wasn't like the other Gangers in that her concsiousness (i can't spell that word) was beamed directly into the 'flesh' body meaning that when The Doctor destroyed it, he was essentially just destroying and non-sentient puppet. The problem with this, of course, is that, supposedly this is what was happening with all the gangers. I think we can simply put it down to a bit of lazy writing. WE make the point that copies of humans ane as human as humans themselves - all fine and dandy, but when we need a twist, to hell with that and hope nobody notices.

Okay the only reason these particular gangers became self-concouis was the solar storm. ganger Amy is just an avatar, and the real Amy who is sleeping in Demon's run is controlling her. OF COURSE Doctor wouldn't kill a sentient self concouis Amy.

The Flesh are projections and only seem to properly “become” independent beings because of things like the lightning accident, after which they start perceiving/thinking/feeling simultaneously and independently from their hosts. (I.e. the hosts are no longer signaling their consciousness into a doppelgänger to control it.) It’s like the famous thought experiment from philosophy, the Transporter Phenomenon, of identity. I think Flesh Amy was more like the pre-lightning doppelgängers-acting as a projection, but not a independent, separate life form/consciousness-because: 1) real Amy has been in captivity the entire time but believed herself to be traveling with Rory and the Doctor the entire time 2) the Doctor “decommissions” Flesh Amy by blocking the signal to her 3) the Doctor tells flesh Amy they’re coming to rescue her wherever she is and real Amy remembers after waking up.

Amy’s doppelgänger was just much, much more advanced because they’ve been signaling her consciousness not across a much longer range, but even while her duplicate was traveling through space and time in the TARDIS to 1969, to the time of Henry Avery then space where the siren nurse’s alien hospital ship was, and even into the pocket universe.

I remember looking up Ira Graves’s actor when that ep came around, ‘cause he also looked familiar-but I’ve so rarely rewatched that episode it didn’t occur to me-an’ thinking: “waitaminit.. Katrina didn’t catch that or Paula didn’t look up the actor’s name and that didn’t come up.. (or maybe it came up in the Patreon an’ they didn’t include it here.. oh well)..”

I can't be 100% sure but I think Amy got taken in that scene where she went to the bathroom in the white house after that other lady got zapped, it cut to her leaving the bathroom. But we didn't see if she just escaped or got replaced then. Just my theory

i think you missed a HUGE point, amys ganger never was conscious it was never a person it was just a vessel where the consciousness from "real amy" was send into (thats why seeing the door with the lady always) the other flashs got continous because of the storm and then they existed alone that was never the case with amy, the flesh was not living so all your guys feelings about him killing the double amy sadly are nonsense as she was not living at all xD wondering if katrina always got that wrong xD
