If you think queus for free coffee is crazy, you have not seen the queues for free buckets. Finns will wait in line for hours for a plastic bucket worth maybe a half of a euro ($0.5 US).

Rachel certainly has spent a lot of time in Finland. Her spelling of Finnish phrases is near perfect and the depth of her understanding the Finnish way of living is amazing.

These days its called "jokaisenoikeudet" or "everyones rights", and it actually allows you to roam, forage, camp and fish on privately owned lands and forests too. But you do need the landowners permission to hunt, or to cut down live trees &c. And you cant go on peoples crop fields or their actual yards. Many videos wrongly say that it only applies on public lands

Waiting in queue for stupid free shit is more of a joke, people go there to make it funny that people go there.. It is a big joke and i very much appreciate those that make it happen. If i saw a line for free buckets i would join in, just for the fun of it. There is also a sense of belonging to the society when you are part of that joke.

Men usually don't hug each other. Women more so. A woman can also hug a man very freely, men usually don't mind it. Men need to use a little more judgment when hugging a woman. Personally, I never hug male friends or my father, but quite often female friends and of course female relatives. Cheek kisses are not used at all.

I do not hug anyone, unless they are huggy kind of persons, and they ask first. Never hug without a warning.

Finns are the most European people genetically and linguistically because there are the most early Germanic words and because we have mixed the least with other peoples from outside of Europe, i.e. thousands of years back in time, Swedes are our best friends and Estonians are our sisters and brothers.

8:12 Yeah, about this. Never ever do this, this is about the only thing in Finland that can get you into some dangerous situations. Especially if you are a man and at night time, at the burger/pizza/kebab place where people are getting their meal to go on their way to home after drinking between 3 to 5 AM. It can literally get you killed, almost all the fights I have seen in Finland (between Finnish people) have been in these situations, and sometimes people have even died, no joke I think the reason is, that in a society that has no class hierarchy and is based on mutual trust and respect of each other, if you skip someone in line, you are basically challenging them to a duel by slapping them in the face. Because you are indicating to them, that you are above them, and they are below you, and unless you react, you are admitting this very aggressive power move. At the least, you will make those other people extremely mad at you, and if they are very drunk, they might just take you up on that challenge with disastrous consequences With women, people will most likely just yell at you or not let you pass them, and the staff might actually refuse to serve you and have you thrown out if you cut in line. However, for men the above can happen, especially if you look like you can handle yourself in a fight and are doing it intentionally (basically you didn't do it by accident because you were too drunk) The most dangerous is if you do this accidentally to a very conservative member of the very proud gypsy (Romani) minority people in Finland, since they might even be carrying knives and take this insult deadly seriously. They have very strict rules about these sort of social hierarchy things, but I am in no way expert in their culture, so I don't want to make any more specific examples due to my ignorance 9:14 I don't think this is accurate, and she is misremembering it a bit. I am pretty sure she is talking about the "free bucket" giveaway craze that was going on about the time she was living here. Don't ask me the details, I never understood it, but people were going absolutely crazy during that time, and line up for hours for a free bucket and maybe something else? Only thing I remember about it, that is was most likely a symptom of desperate need for a convenient excuse to go socialize with people. What they were giving away, didn't matter at all, just that they could go get the free stuff and thus partake in a fun event with other people. Finnish culture used to have a LOT of local small events, happenings and community projects that unified people a lot, and gave people a sense of belonging. However, in the past 25 years or so, these have all but vanished in many parts of Finland, leaving a vacuum of social activities where you were supposed to socialize with people with a permission, since everyone who was there, was there to socialize, meet other people and to do volunteer work for a common cause

I second the line thing. I am not a bold person, I am a frail finnish woman and the one time in my life someone tried to cut in line and steal my spot... It was in a grocery store, I was stone cold sober and I can't remember many times in my life I've gotten so angry so fast. I just ignored the line cutter, jumped back in line and mutely let them throw this whole embarrassing act of "you're stealing MY spot!" while the cashier and the entire queue threw them very pointed, disapproving looks and made the queue so dense it was impossible to steal a spot. The line cutter rather quickly realised that the bright idea to cut in line wasn't working all that well for them, got very quiet, and took off. It's been years and I still get angry when I think of that freaking audacity.

She said she waited for 30 minutes or was it 45 minutes. I have seen people wait for that long to get a coffee that has to be paid, so why not to get a free coffee. I worked in the cafeteria for 11 years. I have seen some stuff. Do not underestimate the need for caffeine.

skipping the taxi line after night out in the bar might be even dangerous in Finland.Alot of violent assault used to happen on taxi lines or at take away food places and most often somebody didnt respect someones personal space, cutted the line or looked some one wrong and after long night of finnish drinking thats all it takes before fists starts flying

I've never heard of that cheerful coffee shop, but are you sure that there were Finns or grandmothers who lived during the Neuvollott period in the queue? yes, for free bocek`s h re's a laugh ring. I've never heard of that cheerful coffee shop, but are you sure that there were Finns or grandmothers who lived during the time of the Treaty of the Soviet Union in the queue? The free buckets are the biggest laugh here.
