Buzzfeed released a video of what it’s like to be a Mormon Missionary… and it’s pretty hilarious! We decided we HAD to react to it, especially since both hosts, Justin and Taylor, have been actual Mormon missionaries (correctly named missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or LDS Church).
Taylor and Justin talk about the accuracy of the video, as well as some of the myths. They talk about their experience as missionaries and might even come close to shedding a few tears!

What Buzzfeed doesn't understand is that it's easier to mock people than to make sacrifices for what you believe is true and right. The early Church Apostles and Prophets, Galileo, Alfred Wegener, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesus Christ all made sacrifices for things that were unpopular and were constantly ridiculed. They could have done nothing and just focus on their wellbeing. Missionaries also have this choice. But the cause of truth and the happiness of others is worth the sacrifices.

So, funny story: I went to VidCon in 2018 and saw Keith Habersberger (the taller missionary with the glasses) and asked him where the inspiration came from and how they knew so much about missionaries. He told me that there is someone on the buzzfeed team that was raised a member and he had the idea so they did it and we get this masterpiece😂 I just got back from my mission in Kansas and I now understand how true some of the aspects in this video actually are. Keep up the amazing work y’all! These videos inspire me to keep sharing the gospel in normal and natural ways!

I was in a similar situation on my mission of when my mom died. Part of why I stayed and didn't attend the funeral is because my mission President advised that it would be incredibly difficult to return. I had permission to go home and come back, but yeah, I agreed and idk if I would have returned.

As I said, I did miss it. And I asked to not to get details about it until I was ready. My family understood. I don't regret my decision at all, so no, it doesn't weigh in my conscience. I love my mother dearly but I know why I was doing what I was doing and it wouldn't have brought her back. I still mourn for her to this day but knowing myself, it would have been far harder on me to go back and forth rather than do what I did.

Pretty cool! I actually didn't do a prosylyting mission. I have a lot of friends that did. I did a service mission. Our missionaries are amazing! I've actually been visiting with the local elders on Zoom every week. One of my friends is almost finished with her mission. She is a historic site missionary in Nauvoo. The last two weeks she's given me virtual tours of places important to our people. This week she showed me the Heber and Vilate Kimball home. Last week I saw the brickyard.

Those doorstep introductions were not real. No one ever starts with hey have you heard of Joseph Smith. Even though it was fairly accurate, it was over the top acting and made the missionaries look much more gringy than the normal behavior is. This was exaggerated stereotypes at play so not in that sense reflection of real missionary life.

You brought up the story of the bishop or mission president refusing to return early for their father's funeral. Could this be because of the social pressures and stigma directed towards missionaries that return early or are forced to return?
@JustinWintch
@JustinWintch 3 года назад
There is definitely a social stigma there, but that situation was specifically because the president felt that once he was home he should stay home for his family. So it wasn't the best reason, but it kind of made sense to me.

"It's not about the gospel. It's about connection." is the most true missionary advice I've ever heard. Interesting how the details don't help you make it sound attractive to unbiased third parties. The "eternal perspective" notion makes perfect sense if you're trying to get people to overlook their own needs or their own logical faculties. Excellent brainwashing technique. Prove me wrong. ;)

@Brendon King As someone who is no longer with the Church (or cult if you prefer), how do you feel about your Mission at this point? Was it entirely bad in your eyes, or do you feel that it did a decent amount of good in your life?
@BrendonKing
@BrendonKing 3 года назад
@@biganimefan84 I get this question a lot actually. If I could do it all over again, I would. I genuinely believe the experience taught me a lot about the world, about growing up, and taught me how to love those who may not share the same background or culture as I do. I think the mission serves as a wonderful teacher for compassion and for empathy, and those are two gifts that I will cherish from the experience, no doubt. Now I would be dishonest if I didn't admit it had its downsides too, and, regardless of faith, I would wish the church was more candid and upfront about the difficulties of mission life. Sometimes you don't get to eat, oftentimes you don't get to sleep, and you learn to be grateful for what little you have that truly belongs to you. Money is almost always tight, and if you don't have some personal cash of your own, you are totally and wholly dependent on the ding dongs in the mission office on making sure you have what you need to do what you are expected to do. There were times were our allowance wasn't deposited because the financial clerk and the supplies clerk were too busy goofing off and forgot to finalize deposits, and rents were due. You had to be pretty quick thinking or take the hit yourself for their mistakes. They do happen.

I remember walking into my parents' living room after coming home, years of living in these cement rectangles under the searing heat, slinking onto the couch, and remembering just how nice everything was. I took a lot for granted with my parents. Just that things were clean, and neat, and well-kept. I forgot how soft carpet could feel under your feet.
