Reaction To German Comedian Roasting UK (Michael Mittermeier)
This is my reaction to German Comedian Roasting UK (Michael Mittermeier)
I recently reacted to German satirist Voker Pispers (which I thought was brilliant) and asked for recommendations for German comedians or German comedy for me to react to and one of the comedians mentioned was Michael Mittermeier. In this video he roasts the UK. I really enjoyed this one.

Since you talked about Mittermeier's brand of comedy being different from Pispers': In Germany, we differentiate between "Comedy" (we actually use the English word for it) and "Kabarett". The former is (mostly) simply someone being funny on stage for the sake of entertainment, to make you laugh, while the latter would be best characterized as political satire and is usually very serious social and political criticism wrapped in humor because it would be too depressing and very hard to digest otherwise. By the way, not to be pedantic, but in German the letter "v" is almost always pronounced like an "f" [Edit: It actually varies a lot more than I thought, see the replies], so you're technically mispronouncing "Volker" (not a real problem obviously, but I thought you might wanna know) Cheers
@livedandletdie
@livedandletdie Год назад
in the middle of words v is v in the beginning of words it is f. Unless it's a Loanword in which it's always v... Such as in Volvo.
@theboon13
@theboon13 Год назад
@@livedandletdie You prompted me to actually look further into it. Like you said, at the start of a word it depends on whether it's an original German word, in which case it's an "f "(Vater, Vogel, Volk) or a loanword, in which case it's a "v" (Vampir, Vulkan, Vase). When it's in the middle it skews heavily towards being a "v", although there are a few exceptions, such as "Kurve", "Olive" and "nerven" (I'm not counting words like "mühevoll" and "davon" since those are compounds containing words that start with v). At the end of a word "v" is always pronounced "f". I think the reason I felt like it's almost always an "f" is because there are tons of words that start with the prefixes "ver-" and "vor-" and those are all pronounced "f". So, yeah, thanks for correcting me and making me think about it further!
@Bruddel
@Bruddel Год назад
shouldn´t we germans not carefully evaluate this V vs F , before there is a suspicion of spreading misinformation. just to be correct. and also check before pointing this slightly mispronouncing, make sure that "who is mert" feelings are respected. look, not everybody is suited to face the harsh reality that some germans have such a love for details...
@theboon13
@theboon13 Год назад
@@Bruddel Well, in "Volker" it is pronounced like an "f", so if I hadn't made a general statement about the letter beforehand, I could have avoided being wrong entirely :D I feel like I did phrase the whole thing respectfully by framing it as pedantic and not a real problem, wouldn't you agree?

It's alright now isnae? Although Scottish isn't an accent, it's a collection of accents, there's Highland Scottish, there's Lowland Scottish, there's Glaswegian, there's Orkney and Shetland, there's a bunch more, but still compared to the English accents, especially those close to Scotland, Scottish sounds angelical... My cousin is married to an Englishman and lived in Manchester 15 years ago. I lived with her for three months and because I couldn't find a job, I went back to Germany. I had almost only positive experiences with English people, the humour is simply amazing. In the supermarket (ASDA) I was looking for a certain spice paste and was searching up and down the small shelf and was completely concentrated. Suddenly, a very small, elderly lady tugged at my sleeve, smiled at me and said "'Scuse me, are you done counting the packages of spices? Or do you need another moment? Otherwise, I'd like to go first!" And I laughed tears. We talked a bit, the lady was absolute golden. There was a little stand outside selling soft ice cream and I was about to order one after shopping when the elderly lady came out of the shop and I shouted "Hey Lady, would you like an ice cream to apologise for the wait? I'll pay, of course!" and she shouted "I'd love to, when do you ever get a useful gift from a German?!" 😂😂We ate the ice cream, she thanked me and shuffled off.

have a shot at Loriot / Vicco von Bülow. Most distinguished German humorist ever. President Material, but passed away in 2011. Gives you a deep insight into the German Biedermeier Soul. Might not be percieved as funny for 90% of modern audience, but that joke with the DIY Nuclear Power Plant as a kid's Christmas Present is really good. And also, of course, "das Bild hängt schief". Humor is rather sombre but deep, and it takes a while, but then it hits. Don't stop your scottish accent, it's the reason a lot of people are seeing this. Godspeed :D

Loriot can get problematic because of copyright claims. Most of his sketches have been taken down from RU-vid. His heirs are very litigious when it comes to copyright. Hi. I am German. There are very stereotypical ideas about tourists from the countries. German tourists (boomer age) are at the pool very early to lay out their towels, wear beige sandals with white sports socks for example ... British tourists then catch the eye when they are very drunk, loud and rampaging through the beach promenade and leave behind a devastation. Some Germans (not boomer age) see this as a challenge

You asked how Germans experience Brits abroad. Very different. I have often experienced Welsh people in the relevant holiday resorts as unpleasant. The worst prejudices come from them and they let them out as soon as they're drunk. The English are like this and like that, but they're always drunk. The Scots and the Irish are the most agreeable: the drunker the funnier. And best of all: When I drink with Scots, I speak perfect Scottish after the 3rd beer at the latest!

As it is, I love watching Michael Mittermeier, in German he is very witty and I didn't know he did English comedy, but despite his very broad accent (he comes from south Germany, Bavaria, where they are like the Scottish to the rest of the UK when it comes to accent) he did a very good job of making us laugh, but here's the point, most of his subjects are actually all based on true stories and events. He depicts the Germans as they actually are and after living here for 30 years, I see myself in his depictions. Great video, loved watching you watching him. Thanks for the giggles. Take care.

My experience with a drunk Englishman on the Mediterranean, true story, which I experienced exactly the same: I was in Malta a few years ago in the summer; on one of the few beaches; on this beach the shore went down steeply, after 1.5 meters you could no longer stand and had to swim; I was standing/swimming right on that edge when a drunk Englishman drowned right about 2m in front of me; he said "blubb, blubb, help, blubb, blubb" and he was gone! I immediately swam to him, dived down briefly, grabbed his hair, swam to shore and pulled him out. He then regained consciousness relatively quickly (whatever that is when you're drunk), spat out some seawater, shook himself violently and staggered off! I was standing there like a drowned poodle, I had just saved someone's life and he just ran away!

Michael Mittermeier did programs I found a lot funnier in German, but props to him for doing one in English…it still shows that there is a language barrier and the wit around undertones I find lacking in this set. Scottish and German pronounciation are a lot closer than English and German, that‘s why we have a lot of Gaelic speakers in Germany, funnily enough,…. When I remember correctly Michael Mittermeier studied americen studies and even wrote his Diplomarbeit about Standup Comedy. And he did shows in South Africa, USA and England etc.. So he is really skilled to do this in English and has quite a lot of experience abroad. I was to two of his programs, they where really great, would visit a show in a heartbeat again. Besides that, I never met some people from the UK or Scotland on holiday outside of the UK/Scotland/ Ireland. So I can't share something there. But I loved visiting England, Scotland and Ireland and I'm really fond of the people, the culture, the films etc.. I believe we have a lot of similarities. For example I'm from a region that traditionally has a lot of rain and was back in time called siberia of Germany, because there was a time, when the people where really poor here. Another Comedian to check out is Otto. He had his own sketch show, played songs, made movies, painted and dubbed really famous characters in Disney/ Pixar movies. For example Mushu in Mulan and Sid in Ice Age.

Thanks, @whoismertsalih, I'd never have seen this footage of Mittermeier without your reaction video! It's consoling to hear that even somebody from the UK finds the scottish accent hard to understand.

Mittermeier is a Bavarian and speaks of his Bavarian mentality as "typically German". But that isn't true. Germany has many mentalities and characteristics that are completely different, just like the dialects. When people think of Germany, American people first, think of Lederhosen and Beer, thanks to people like Michael. But if you come to Northern Germany, you will find that the people here are completely different. We are stiff, humorless and speak very very little :D We love our Seagulls and Fishermen and we're proper proud of it :) As a Northern I say NO WAY to Michael.

In the eighties, I went on holiday in Portugal with friends. We visited a bullring, it was noon, it was hot, we were looking for shade … The English could be recognised by sitting without a T-shirt but with massive sunburn in the middle of the blazing sun.

Actually, I LOVE the scottish accent! I could listen to you scotts aaaaaalllll day ❤ Hearing Mittermeier's heavy German/bavarian accent while talking english is quite embarrassing 😳 Michael Mittermeier used to be one Germanys top comedians in the late 90s, but in my opinion, he isn't really funny anymore. Fortunately, we have some other really good comedians & satirist, like Carolin Kebekus, Jan Böhmermann, Torsten Sträter, Kurt Krömer, Sarah Bosetti ...

As for political satire one of my favourites is Urban Priol. Also very good is Max Uthoff (part of "Die Anstalt"). One of my favourite comedians is Thorsten Sträter. I also like Wolfgang Trepper especially when he tears appart German Schlager.

One of my absolute favourites of German satire besides Volker Pisper is Hagen Rether. Very sharp-tongued and always straight to the point. Honestly, Mittermeier is kinda low-class comedy while Pisper is higher class. Comparable to english; Mittermeier would be David Chapelle or Fluffy; Volker Pispers would be like watching Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. Something else I would always recommend regarding german higher class comedy would be "Die Anstalt". It is done by two very good satiricals with some guest stars, who go into extensive research to show complex stories but easy to digest. For easier comedians, you can try Jürgen von der Lippe, but I doubt he has alot of english translated pieces...

Like theboon13 said Volker Pispers is not a comedian like Michael Mittermeier. Volker Pispers is a political cabaret artist criticizing politicians and the establishment. Michael Mittermeier makes fun about people and their behaviour. Very often about Gernans too. I like them both because their are artists on their own fields. And to the point that "V" is always pronounced an "F"... this is not quite accurate. In the case of Volker it might be true. But in the word Vase, the "V" is pronounced "W". One of the traps non German speakers might step into. Or as we Germans joke "Deutsche Sprak, schwere Sprak!".

Great video! Your Scootish language accent is beautiful. lexellent ;-) so to say. Visited Scotland for 3 weeks in the days when the 1st oil drilling platform was taken out to the North Sea. One could see it from Castle hill in Edinborough. The idea what it was revealed itself in the evening news. The 1st thing Scots told me that I will never be able to speak Scottish because I cannot pronounce loch. Well, I said, I can, because my native language is German. Next on the Orkneys, they told me I would not understand their local dialect, which was Scandinavian. Well I could. Gud necht, tonecht (spelling?) was easy: good night, tonight.

British comedy is way more raunchy, and most of the time just uses slurs to make fun of people. The coursing is mostly was makes it "funny", i.e. "he said the p-word, lmao". To be honest: There isn't a lot of funny british comedians, but rather "those that know how to curse the best way possible". German comedy, when taking the p*ss, is mostly very polite sort of observations - but with a machined precision and truth behind it. Goes for almost all comedians ever. German comedy is also best, when talking about how much politicians fk people raw.

Although Mittermeier is a very gifted comedian I fullheartedly resent his idiotic program talking almost exclusively about something that happened generations ago reinforcing the association of Germans with nazism and reinforcing other stupid prejudices about Germans. That´s about the lowest level of humor. Volker Pispers on the other hand showed us how sophisticated a comedy program can be.
