this was a historic moment. mariah's rendition and arrangement of "america the beautiful" is just so telling of her musicianship and her VOCALS like omg!!!! a god-given TALENT

You have to understand - she was a complete unknown at this point. She only had the one little black dress! Mariah shocked everybody with this legendary DEBUT performance, since her appearance on Arsenio Hall Show would not air until later on that week, singing her own song Vision Of Love. This was also 100% live singing, almost acapella, with only the expert accompaniment from the late great Richard T. on piano. Even Marv Albert was compelled to say (in Aretha Franklin home territory Detroit): "And the Palace now has a Queen!!"😮😂😅 And the goosebumps have continued now for thirty years .... ❤🎉😊

Actually this one is her TV first appearance ever. The Arsenio one was aired after this but she performed live too. It was taped but the performance was sung live. This one was broadcasted and performed live and was also her first appearance. Imagine how nervous she was and yet she took down the house.

Mariah and Aretha only do Natural Woman at the end of Divas , along with the other ladies, Carole King, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion and Shania Twain. I think I mentioned, in another video , that Mariah covered Aretha Franklin's, Don't Play That Song for Me. She performed this cover, along with a few other songs, from her Mariah Carey album, at her Pre debut Showcase at NYCs Tattoo Club
