This is one of their many masterpieces that changed the course of musical history.. Bohemian rhapsody is the first one that shook the world but the show must go on is another example not only for the lyrics and Freddie's outstanding vocal but because that song was recorded just months before Freddie died and his voice was something else.. If you listen to the show must go on knowing that he was just about to leave has you can't not have shivers and chills all over

Somebody to Love Montreal live HD is a given. Live Aid Wembley 85 Freddie performed against doctor's orders due to him suffering a throat infection but nothing was going to stop him performing and watched by 1.9 billion people and raised millions of pounds for starving children in Ethiopia.. brilliant reaction how wonderful it is that we can still appreciate Legends like Freddie Mercury what would music be like today without them. Freddie considered this song better than Bohemian Rhapsody from the writing aspect, this was his favourite.

As everyone will tell you they are just as good live, their Montreal gig was recorded for video and the sound quality is amazing. You can see them all singing on this video and playing and work out whose voice is who.

This might have been the song Freddie was proudest of. Glad to see you enjoy it too. It actually never gets old, I’ve been a fan for a really long time. Freddie sings lower in a song called Mother Love. He has a huge range and impeccable timing. And as you can hear from this song, a great songwriter.

This was a crowd pleaser when I saw them both times, in 1980 & 1982. Whether you react to it or not check out this song from their "Rocks Montreal 1981" Live video. Also from that same show "Save Me" which, at the time, was a new song off the Game album. If you want another gem, that was Bohemian Rhapsody before Bohemian Rhapsody, listen to "March of the Black Queen/Funny How Love Is" off Queen II. To get the true effect of the song you must listen to both. That's how they appear on the record.

My mom once played a Queen song to me sometime in the second half of the 90's and I fell in love. I don't regret being born in 1990 but my only regret is that I could not go to his concert while he was still alive. I was only one year old when he died in 1991.. I wish I could go to his concert. But rather, in a country where I lives, going to a concert far away in another country would be impossible because of the earnings. I love this band. My beloved band. React to his songs. Most of their work is amazing and you won't be disappointed. They played so many genres that everyone will find something for themselves.

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” he sings in his lower register. The melody and beat is a homage to the 50’s-60’s songs. Very good tune

I personally love that you are listening to this without the video. Freddy Mercury was such a dynamic performer that you forget how good his voice really was. While he hits low notes in many songs, including this one, if you want to hear an entire song in his lower range, check out Time Waits For No One. If you really want an example of his voice, there is a version of We Are The Champions with everything else stripped out. I missed out on Queen when I was young ( except for the ones that were everywhere on the radio like We Are The Champions/We Will Rock You and Another One Bites the Dust). You have a lot to catch up on like I did.

I subscribed for your Queen reactions. Keep going!!! Freddie had a 4-5 octave range. Scientists studied his voice. They concluded he used parts of his throat that allowed him to sing unlike any other singer. He could do extended vibrato and had incredible range.

Both Freddie Mercury (lead vocals and piano) and Roger Taylor (drums and vocals) had, at this point in their career, a vocal range of close to 4 octaves. Any high falsetto you hear is Roger Taylor, but he had lost his very high falsetto by the early to mid ‘80s.

Freddie was a natural baritone, and sang with that tone in his later work, especially when he did his opera recordings with Monserrat Caballe.

I love your reactions, wish you would do more queen. You could listen to a song every month and never run out of songs. They Did their songs different as every concert so you could listen to the studio version and then go to several concerts and the song would be different each time.

You could spend months and months just listening to Queens back catalogue and still discover new things every day. Oh btw, long story very short, before Freddie passed, he recorded as much as he could, and also made sure that the band owned and had the rights to use any and all material that existed. If you read the notes to the album 'Made In Heaven' you'll learn that the album, released 4 years after Freddie's passing, was expertly mixed from that recorded material. Freddie was truly one of a kind, and the irony is that Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, are each exceptional in their own right, but Freddie is on another level. Their performance on Live Aid, now immortalised in film, is a live set from which all others should be judged, and it was no accident. Even with such short notice, Queen worked and rehearsed, and planned every song and the order they would be, making sure they had the right ingredients and boy did they get it right. All the best in your journey of discovery.

I like how you are lost for words. Me too. Can't describe my emotions but their songs resonate with me for days on end. I've heard this song so many times yet it's as if it was my first time.

I think you would also find it interesting to research the collaboration that Freddie had with Montserrat Caballe, a world famous opera singer, and the song Barcelona. For someone of that calibre to say what she did about Freddie, is a mark of his talent. They became good friends as a result of their meeting. There are a few interviews of her, talking about Freddie, that are especially poignant.

Freddie Mercury was a natural baritone though he usually sang in the tenor range. He never had any vocal training so he never realized that he was a baritone (he had a 4-octave range) even though his speaking voice was baritone. Then in 1987, he worked with the internationally famous Spanish Opera soprano, Monserrat Caballe on the album "Barcelona". She scolded Freddie and told him to sing baritone since it was his natural range. He told her that he was sorry but he couldn't do that since he felt his fans would not be able to recognize him if he did. Freddie had an intriguing physical phenomenon called subharmonics that he used to drive his vocals to the limit. Subharmonic is a form of singing where the vocal folds vibrate along with a pair of tissue structures called ventricular folds. This form of singing is only used by Tuvan throat singers of Mongolia, except in a more extreme way. Freddie’s vocal cords vibrated at 7.04 Hz - higher than a typical vibrato range of 5.4 Hz to 6.0 Hz. To put it more scientifically, the famous opera singer Luciano Pavarotti produced a perfect sine wave for vibrato when he sang - a value of 1. Freddie, on the other hand, averaged a value of 0.57 - which means he was vibrating something in his throat even Pavarotti couldn’t move. Yes, definitely give a listen to live version at Montreal in 1981. Queen was known for rearranging their song for live concerts. Often they would play them faster and increase the instrumental. In the case of this song, it had to be rearranged since the studio version relied so much on the backup chorus of Brian, Roger, and Freddie (with multi-layering and overdubbing) but that cannot be recreated live (Freddie couldn't sing both lead and chorus simutaneously --- he was good but not that good). I love rock n roll and there are so many iconic bands and musicians. However, they are a few bands that are on a higher level due to the lead singers, each member of these groups are musical genius on their own and the sheer volume of music that is still fresh and contemporary to today. There is one other factor and that these lead singers are such incredible front men are so charismatic when watching a live performance, you can not take you eyes off them. IMHO you just discovered the second angle of the trinity of rock bands. The reason is because their are three great bands, and I know I am gonna trigger some people but it is Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant), Queen (Freddie Mercury) and INXS (Michael Hutchence), these groups also formed when members were 20ish and younger. These groups overlapped in that order, dominated the culture, dominated the stadiums, the times, MTV, movie soundtracks, wrote hundreds of songs many more than released. The other thing is that these three groups also paved the way and each developed a new genre of music, unfortunately the deaths of a member is what cause the end for all of them. Led Zeppelin did everything the thunder of the Gods sound, Queen had the blending of Freddie’s opera blending with rock and INXS was consider new age/ alternative because they couldn’t pigeon hole them, but they did a funky/R&B groove. Many people don’t know that INXS use to open for Queen at one time, until they started filling the same stadiums. Freddie and Micheal were friends and there a few stories about them singing together back stage, sorry no iPhones back then.

Queen will surprise you but each song gives you goosebumps at the harmony and beauty. Try Stone Cold Crazy, In the Lap of the Gods, Spread Your Wings, It’s A Miracle, and their duo with David Bowie that the Queen bass player John Deacon wrote an incredible bass riff for called Under Pressure. Freddie was a natural baritone and could sing 4 octaves and did. Listen to live performances and you’ll hear him sing it deeper at times. Queen changed up songs live to keep them interesting to all!!❤❤❤❤

Freddie's voice had quite a range. But you don't mess with this song in any way. I envy you for being at the beginning.

I love, love, love that you did not watch a video and listened to the music only recognizing that you can always watch a video of this song in the future. Being true for all songs, I am so glad that you consider doing it that way. Many videos had nothing to do with the song and can only distract from the music. Greatest live rock band performance was Live Aid 1985. Twenty minutes of pure magic heard by 1.4 billion on the day. Freddie sang four octaves and Roger Taylor the drummer was higher with a falcetto. All their voices matched very well in tone.

This is a fine example of how genius & insanity can be two sides of the same coin.

You might enjoy the video of the remaining members of Queen with George Michael at the Freddie Mercury tribute for AIDS awareness just six months after he passed. At the time George Michael's lover had recently been diagnosed with AIDS from which he eventually died. George wasn't out at the time, so nobody knew how much pain he was in, or how personal this was for him, but later he said he sang this like a prayer for Anselmo. He also sang "These are the Days of Our Lives" at that concert in a duet with Lisa Stansfield. He gave incredible and very well received performances that night.

Take a listen to Freddie and Montserrat Caballe from their Barcelona album, specifically Barcelona, How Can I Go On, The Golden Boy and Guide Me Home. For a special treat, listen to Exercises in Free Love from that album. It’s Freddie’s demo he used to pitch Montserrat on the idea of singing together. You’ll really hear his vocal range in this song.

I really appreciate your desire to listen to Queen’s music without the distraction of a video or a live performance. Because their music has the strength to stand alone. But, as others have noted, a lot of Queen’s magic is discovered in their live performances. All well-known bands are great, whether they play our favorite music or not. But not many bands are as good or even better when performing live than they are in the studio. But Queen is. Freddie Mercury has that “it” quality that many performers would sell their souls to the devil for. He engages an audience from the moment he sets foot on stage, regardless of what he sings. Once you see him perform live, there is simply no doubting that the ‘music gods’ have touched that man and he was born to perform. Period. You’re definitely cheating yourself out of a meaningful musical experience by not watching Queen live performances. A must-see!

Freddie had something like a 4 octave vocal range and he does get down to the baritone range at times. The really high voice in the backing vocals is usually drummer Roger Taylor (he's the guy who sings the really high 'Galileo" on Bohemian Rhapsody). Guitarist Brian May was no slouch in the vocal department too. This song melts my face too.
