@@historylegends I actually have one. We were conducting training with our squad. I was pretending to be a local National commander. We needed to get them to a safe house. Doctrinally they’re taught to never travel on the roads and utilize vegetation as much as possible. Scouting. But the Captain said “fuck walking 7 hours through the brush, we’re taking the road”. Literally did the exact opposite of what they were supposed to do. Completely ignored doctrine. They actually got lucky that our OPFOR didn’t get them lol. That’s an example. Sometimes we don’t follow our own doctrine because it’s better to adapt. Other times commanders are just lazy 😂.

Former Belgian Army infantryman and US Army Armor Crewman here. What you are talking about is a training scenario though. You and me both know that a large part of training is just doing things as fast as possible so we can call ENDEX and go back home lol. @@harryvh3356 It happens downrange too. Complacency is a bitch sometimes. Plus sometimes guys aren't as good at their job or they're so good they know better than doctrine. Really it all depends. We try to follow doctrine, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. I remember our squad leader in Iraq was told to do something that followed doctrine by our Commander, and he said "Fuck that, he's stupid." Sometimes the NCO knows better than the Officer. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure you saw a huge change in how NCOs lead between the Belgian and US Army.

I agree its ridiculous that a sniper is going to give his position away over a civilian. He had the perfect shot to shoot Brad Pitt and then relocate. That was actually an important law of the sniper, after your first shot you change position. I am not an expert but I read this in books
@varelion
@varelion 2 года назад
Interestingly our sniper needed for his second shot longer than 10 seconds, longer than the tank gunner to aim and shoot. Maybe the sniper was too angry at the civilian traitor so that he chose him. After that he felt so heavily burdened with guilt that he accepted to be killed. That's the only reasonable explanation.

I would say the initial clearing of the town was accurate. Street fighting was relatively new in ww2 and doctrine was not the same as it is now. Plenty of pictures of GIs being lackadaisical in “clearing a town”. Lots of pics rifles being held down low and not hugging walls. This looks pretty accurate for clearing a town
@mikkel066h
@mikkel066h 2 года назад
Eh street fighting was not new in 1945. By that time most units had cleared dozens of towns at that point and SOPs were made at that point for how to clear and defend different buildings. Even though it was a new aspect of war, but not at the point were they had no idea what to do.
@eugeneoliveros5814
@eugeneoliveros5814 2 года назад
@@mikkel066h I thought that was mostly in the eastern front, where Russian soldiers very quickly became intimately aware of how to do house to house fighting during the battle of Stalingrad. With the Germans, they tried to avoid it as it required long drawn out engagements as they swept each and every house, which kinda contradicted their doctrine of movement based warfare
@mikkel066h
@mikkel066h 2 года назад
@@eugeneoliveros5814 No, the Germans had specific doctrines and operational procedures on how to capture and hold towns and cities. So did the Allie’s. The Hetzer is a good example of how they developed equipment for specialized roles in urban warfare. They used the Hetzer as an ambush vehicle inside towns, which would easily be able to be positioned inside of houses, debris or other concealed positions. Take out an allied tank and quickly reposition to another location. Another version of the Hetzer had a flamethrower, giving them the ability to subdue positions inside of towns quite easily. The US developed the Jumbo Sherman and Sherman with a 105mm howitzer. The western Allie’s also went for a. “Crush resistance by volume of fire approach”, so when they saw a city or town held by the Germans they would do an intense bombardment either by artillery or air. To break the will of the defenders. And it would be naive to assume that large and modern militaries did not have an appropriate approach to a defended city.
@milkduds1001
@milkduds1001 2 года назад
Doctrinally, at least in the American Military, moment you take fire you immediately engage in the direction of the enemy, and get prone/into cover, and call your 3 Ds (Direction, Distance, and Description). So that’s accurate with them blindly firing in the direction of enemy fire power. You want to gain fire superiority as soon as possible and suppress the enemy in order to allow for freedom of movement.
@mikkel066h
@mikkel066h 2 года назад
For the MG I understand why they would place it there if it had cover from another MG in the main building. That way there would be overlapping fire and layered defense which was common German doctrine. We also see that the basement mg got a fairly good view of the street, it is just the Shermans are blocking it which make it seems more limited the it actually is.

@mikkel066h 2 года назад
German doctrine for Urban defense was to never cross streets unless you had to. So they would blow holes between buildings. Which made them capable of moving from one position to another in a very short amount of time. Another thing they did was the use of self propelled guns for urban defense. The Hetzer was extremely successful at dispatching allied armor from ambush positions inside towns and cities and would quickly relocate after an engagement. They developed the Stürm tiger and mainly used it in the defense to remove advancing troops or level buildings which we is seen in the second Warsaw uprising

In others, it’s all gumdrops and ice cream the second the Germans are pushed out, here, they accurately portray the Americans executing war criminals, lining surrendered enemies up against a wall and the German people fear the Americans just as much as they feared the SS and Wehrmacht, because all three are armed groups of men that can essentially do whatever they want! This is how they’d react!

@varelion
@varelion 2 года назад
You didn't comment on the fact that the tank commander insisted on being exposed all the time instead of going down and closing the hatch even during the heaviest firefight at close range. Maybe due to a claustrophobia attack or bad smell inside the tank or just for the cool look when hanging out in the open. By the way, all the tank commanders prefer to stand exposed as if they were on a sightseeing tour. Extremely lazy script-writing, I must say.

at 7:43 the shell didn't missed but it bounced off because the plate is angled. The problem in this scene is that anti-tank crew didn't fire early where the tank's side armor is extremely vulnerable and they just waited for the tank to angled which ricochet the shell. I assume the anti-tank gun is a Pak38 or Pak40 which is enough to kill the Sherman in the side.

well I do agree with you on most parts but saying the AT guns missed is not true. They bounced of angles of Sherman tanks. Such as in the field in your other episode the AT gun fires but bounces off the angled front right corner of the Sherman, also wind could also effect the shot of the shell in the field. But with the episode we are on now the AT gun might of not had a good shot on the Sherman. Like you said cause chaos but wasting shells that Germans were lacking at the end of the war would of been a waste. And would of given away there position. And with the German machine gun in the basement the gun was facing up. So they would of had to stand up higher to aim straight down the road. Those were just some of my little nit picks. But still good video.

Hip firing a BAR was not only common and accepted... it was actually WHAT THE BAR WAS DESIGNED for. If you have ever actually held a BAR... you would understand how difficult it is to shoulder fire (pretty much impossible on automatic fast mode... still pretty hard on automatic slow mode)... You can manipulate the gun more easily at the waist... reload it more easily... and with short bursts be relatively accurate in a suppression role.

I like your video's my friend! but you were a litle to hard on this sene in my opinion. with the sniper you are 100% correct! But mgs were often put in a position like that. that mg could hold down the whole road if there were no tanks. it didn't fire at first beacause of the tank. and the pak 40 was located pretty good to. it didn't mis fury it ricochet of. And remember, it is april 1945 the germans didn't have much left. so they made every city that they still could a little stronghold. with ambushes and surprise attacks. comunicafion was also trash at the time of war. units were put together and mixed up. so thwy did a grear job to capture that chaos! they were fighting an enemy the knew they couldn't defeat. this is done whell in my opinion!

Its not bs first off lets talk about the anti tank one and why did they hid guns in some certain spots, its the end of the war, so expecting a full out war in the fields are rare and so it introduced into a new part of battles from house to house and streets to streets so don't be surprised if you see some weapons hidden in some certain areas

I think it is always hilarious how stupid and incompetent the German army is displayed in any kind of war movies. Not just American ones, also Russian, British, French, you name it. And it is not even as you said in the first Fury part that America's enemies are always displayed to be incompetent, because I feel like Japanese e.g. in "The Pacific" or the Vietnamese in in basically every movie are commonly displayed haunted by bad strategy, but very brave and motivated. Why is that?

I think smart tactic for Germans would have been to employ front and back plug - lure the Americans inside the village, destroy the first and the last tank to block escape route and then annihilate everything. Effective range of PAK40 is 2 km, but in this case, all alone, I would have situated it on flanking position (around a corner) so that it can fire a sideshot and not get return fire from other tanks. Americans have too much firepower for direct confrontation between tanks and single AT gun.

Firing a browning from the hip is plausible and did happen, especially in this case where they are on the attack and not defending, even in some footage(I think cologne?) there’s a snippet where a GI is carrying a browning and firing on the move form the hip. Not as accurate as setting up the bipod but the point is to be able to maneuver and provide suppressive fire when needed. Everything else flawed is agreeable.

Ok one you must be thinking of modern day combat the infantry would not have been in front they would be behind the tank because of snipers or mgs second the reason why the sniper shot the old man because he was a so call traitor to the German people and the would you take a risky sniper shot on a tank commander risk of having the muzzle flash being seen and the m2 had a handle for it but the m2 guy didn’t have it has some type of thick gloves the rest of everything you said I agree with but the mg42 probably jammed and (last one) the tank commander probably say the snipers muzzle flash

The anti tank guns round simply ricocheted right off the front slope of the tank the reason he didn’t fire when the sniper did because the tanks and other soldiers weren’t exposed around the corner when the sniper and machine gun was shooting at them The machine gun was in a tactically superior position because he’s concealed in the basement nobody knows he’s there why he still didn’t fire when the sniper dead I don’t know
