Record company forced Tool to add a more "aggressive, radio playable" track to Lateralus as it was nearing completion. T&L was the bands response, and that middle quiet section prevented radio play. One of their angriest, most provoked tracks along with HWaP. That middle section also gives the listener some time to sit in quiet contemplation of the who/why/what of the anger, not only of the band but of whatever they themselves may be dealing with.

Record company wanted some heavy and shorter that could be played on radio. They sent them this longer song with soft slow but in middle that was basically un-radio friendly on purpose. Love it.

Yeh this was a giant FUCK YOU to the record company for telling the Band what kind "Radio Friendly" song Corporate needed at the time. No one tells TOOL what to do, so not only did they make this directly aimed at Corporate (the lyrics) but also dropped in that 3-ish minute long slow-down to screw over Radio programming, which typically 3-5 minute songs. Awesome song. Freakin Hilarious origin story. We all benefit.

They rarely play this song live because it kills Maynards throat. When they do play it, he uses a megaphone to achieve the scratchy sound. I luckily got to see this song live. I love the slow down and then slam when they bring it back. Also your air drums were on point!

The legend of this song is a record executive wanted them to add a heavier song on the album something to compete with the heavier bans like Korn and Slipknot. So knowing the tick (record exc) would more than likely only listen to the first minute of the song they add in that chill part as a 🖕you. Another banging tune that's even better when you have some of the back story. The record label insisted they needed a "heavy song" like Disturbed had released that year. So this was their response. It's a total FU back to their label. "Hope this is what you wanted.. Hope this is what you had in mind... cuzz this is what you're getting. I hope you choke!"

Online myth that its specifically about the record label... not exactly. There was a lot of inner tension going on within the band during the recording of the Lateralus album, to the point the band nearly broke up. Understanding that atmosphere, you can get a sense of where Maynard may have channeled a lot of his frustration for a number of the songs. This was however the very last song Maynard recorded on the album and he blew his voice out for over a week.

Bro, now that you’re knee deep in TOOL and Lateralus especially, I suggest giving The Holy Gift a go. It’s the album with tracks rearranged based on pairs of 13. The songs flow together seamlessly, including the drum roll at the end of Schism running into the beginning of Ticks and Leeches. 😎👍🏼

it's some fan made arrangement, some people claim it's a secret thing they figured out. Tool fans have a tendency to go a little too deep sometimes. I don't think the songs "flow together seamlessly" unless that's what you want to hear
