Reaction To Volker Pispers: Double Standards in International Law and Democracy 

He was one of the best and brightest political satirists and cabaret artists in Germany. He has withdrawn into private life for several years now. The interesting thing is that what he said many years ago has lost none of its relevance today.

Pispers breaks down knowledge, that cannot be found in the world's daily newspapers, into simple examples that everyone can understand. He always finds an appealing comparison, that simultaneously freezes spontaneous laughter in the face of disillusionment.

Volker Pispers studied English, Catholic theology and education and used to be an English teacher until the mid 80s

Volker Pispers said that he retired because he kept saying basically the same stuff for decades, people laugh, but nothing changes. I can understand that he is just demotivated to keep going. Sure he makes money, but I think he's in it to make a difference more than anything.

Pispers is brilliant, but you should also watch Hagen Rether. There is a piece of his work with English subtitles. About the "damn north koreans" Masterpiece!

2:10 I think the actual joke here is that the bavarian party is a christian party and a lot of people are arch conservative christs in bavaria, it is part of the culture there. And they have democratic elected a religious party. So a situation that translates to the elections in tunesia.

The fact he is a Lutheran theologian really shows. Double standards are his bread and butter. First pointing out something bad a dictator does, followed by remarking that it is not that different from what Western leaders do.

Look out for some material from German cabaretist Urban Priol with English translation. He is a similar caliber as Volker Pispers. He was a member of the "Anstalt" satire TV show. Don't know what he does now.

Volker Pispers was a master of dialectic thinking detecting contradictions in principle of political systems. As a Marxist, he knew that the bourgeois state acts as an ideal overall capitalist, but ideologically disguises the true interests of their protagonists.. He publicly deconstructed these ideologies and debunked their platitudinous character. No other political cabaret artist has ever reached his intellectual class. It was always funny that he took off the masks of the protagonists of power, because he couldn't defeat them, but at least he could expose them to ridicule.

The view into the audience at 1:24. 😉 There were probably some "Ossis" (inhabitants of the former GDR) sitting there who didn't find it funny at all. However, Volker Pispers is absolutely right here. Unfortunately, there are quite a lot of extreme right-wingers (AfD voters) in the new federal states, but, of course, also some in the western part of Germany.

VP is funny and it is allways a little truth in his words. But it is not the truth. Do not misunderstand.

Volker Pispers had nothing to do with comedy, he made tough political satire and cabaret and he first held the mirror up to the audience and then hit the audience with this mirror so that the laughter often got stuck in their throats and his content was fact-based.

Some jokes did not age too well. For example we know nowadays that invading Crimea was preparation for a larger attack on Ukraine. But about the directness: I grew up with his shows and to me that’s normal. What I like more with shows these days is that many provide sources in their videos. When watching Pispers, you had to trust him (or fact check afterwards and find out that he’s usually right). With all the people spreading unsourced claims these days, I wish Pispers had already provided sources.

He shouldn't have gone too far with the satire. Crimea was an extremely bad example. As funny as it may seem.. in this context, it was an attack by one state on another which he, like the politicians of most countries, simply ignored! Since when can you vote on something in a FOREIGN COUNTRY? If you try to reconcile the criticism with the arguments, you have to say that it wasn't better than some of the comparisons in the "Bild-Zeitung", at least not in some comparisons.

THE WORLD NEEDS VOLKER!!! The most valuable gem Germany has ever had!!! You should also watch Georg Schramm who is probably just as great as Volker. It's extremely sad that he stopped doing shows...😢 The world has gone mad... Speaking truth to power is almost impossible... If Volker were to speak about current affairs (cancel culture, Russia, Ukraine, Covid19, lockdowns, wars in the Middle East, Trump, the migrant crisis, transgender issues, political correctness, Brexit, our current government, the incompetence, scandals, corruptions and more and more), he would probably step on some very powerful individuals' toes that he would get cancelled or taken out which probably explains why the narrative of "Die Anstalt" changed so drastically. People are losing everything if they dare to speak the truth. Everyone's immediately demonized as the worst person on Earth and that makes the whole world of media and politics so crazy and dangerous. Power, Money, Influence, Greed... while the innocent suffer, die or lose out... what a world...

If you really like him, you might want to watch one of Hagen Rether's subtitled ones, I really can recommend "Hagen Rether on Islam" or better yet "Hagen Rether - Nothing changes [eng. subtitles]"; that's peak German political cabaret. 😅 He shines a light on our every little prejudice and double-standard; and then lights it on fire. Besides Jan Böhmermann he's one of the founders of the "true German" - movement. A true German isn't someone who likes to hurt others, wants to separate and kick out people considered non-German. The true German is helpful, friendly and welcoming to everyone. The true German knows that mixing cultures will lead to the most amazing and surprising results, whereas trying to keep your culture "untainted" leads to elitism, boring traditions nobody even knows the reason for their existence and seclusion.

While Pispers has always the overall facts right, his interpretations are very subjective and downright wrong at times (especially his views on Ukraine are factually wrong more often than not)

I don't think Volker Pispers could still make such appearances without consequence. Not in times like these. Not in Germany! I know, you are a big fan of 'Heute Show' and Dieter Nuhr. But face it: There is a reason why Volker Pispers decided to quit and they are successful “on air”. Yes, you can criticize, but only as much as the system allows otherwise you are a conspirator, an anti-democratic subject. Defamation - a typically German virtue! Did you know how many RU-vid videos are deleted? Ask “Die Anstalt”, they have experienced this more than once.

Volker Pispers is/was the German equivalent of the USA's George Carlin. They were on the same level of spot on satire, sarcasm, hard-to-swallow news/reality, etc. Really miss both of them.
