U need to make a video on how the hype of May December fizzled out overnight. It had alot of buzz at the beginning of award season. Charles melton was the front runner for a while. He was winning small awards here and there. Everybody thought he was gonna give Robert downing Jr competition.
@arontamas5639
@arontamas5639 7 месяцев назад
The Best supporting actor category is stacked and chaotic but I feel sorry for Melton's snub but specially for Dafoe's..... Honestly if only one of them from Poort things could only be picked I'd rather have chosen Dafoe over Ruffalo ANYDAY.

Sounds like the entire acting community got self-conscious over _May December's_ subject matter and consequently gave it the cold shoulder. But hey, the Writers branch to the rescue with its Best Original Screenplay Oscar nom.

I do remember the narrative on Poor Things early on being that it was too weird and that the Academy wouldn't embrace it like they did The Favourite. Searchlight also initially putting it on the schedule in early September right after it did Venice and Telluride also made it seem like they didn't have faith in it as an awards player at first. I had it in Best Picture on Gold Derby back when it was like 58/1 and kept those odds the whole way. Also I had COMPLETELY forgotten about Long Day's Journey into Night even being a thing.

To be fair, Air, The Color Purple, and others that underperformed looked like big Oscar players. You did very well with Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer...albeit, a bit conservative on both (especially Barbie). Best Actress, though 🤭 4 out of 5 in Best Actor was very impressive that early. Leonardo DiCaprio was probably #6!! If I remember correctly, I predicted Rachel McAdams for Best Supporting Actress very early but she never gained any traction on the televised awards. However, I can't be embarrassed by that call. In any case, the Academy should be embarrassed for leaving her out. 🙃 Fun video!!

back when i was in high school, a friend and i used to play the prediction game. it was challenging considering that the internet was nonexistent. we quickly understood that it had nothing to do with what we considered to be the best, but relied heavily on history, and plenty other things that sometimes have little to nothing to do with the movie. i like how you consider all the additional baggage and how your expert taste sometimes gets in the way... and like my friend used to say: there is always next year.

In my 76 years on this earth, I have learned that life is tough sometimes. My husband of 53 years passed away 2 years ago and my 52 year old son died 10 months later. Yes, life is tough, but we have to keep on keeping on! The alternative is just not acceptable. I’m still in mourning but keeping busy, traveling and getting out of the house even though I could just sit at home and do nothing. I can’t stand being sad, so I’m not (occasionally). I’m a positive happy person and will find ways to stay that way. Life is too short to waste time being sad (occasionally)!!!

I can't find any information for Long Day's Journey Into Night! I hope it is coming out in 2024 and just got delayed due to the strike or something. It did wrap in 2022 so my fingers are crossed it gets a release date soon. Love me some Jessica Lange and Ed Harris!

I knew The Color Purple wasn’t going to get big nods but only one. Even with Oprah’s influence, it wasn’t enough to get Oscar love. Besides, it was competing against other films.

I think people were calling Saltburn already as early as April like Oscar Expert because of it being Fennell's next project and it getting buzzy test screenings I think expected Murphy and Blunt more than RDJ considering he was 4th in billing, but I started predicting him the moment Nolan said in the press tour that the B&W POV was focused on RDJ and that meant he's basically a huge part of the movie Love videos like these where you're faster, looser, and more natural!

Does anyone really like those streaming head sallad movie posters? Look at The Color Purple. The original movie has such a strikingly beautiful art attatched to it, and the new version is so ugly that it doesn't make me any curious to check it out. I do believe it makes people less attracted to the movie...

Blame taraji for derailing the colour purple momentum. She complained non stop during the press tour instead of her to talk about the movie. I felt so bad for fantasia, this was he debut movie role. Taraji eclipsed everything with her behaviour.

It's kind of a weird thing if you can make some awards predictions, even accurately, before some of the movies have even come out. I mean this in the sense that the system and it's products, as well as the congratulatory awards afterward, are predictable. When these things happen, the release of a movie and the awards, it seems like almost an afterthought. I used to do this too when I co-ran a film website. It makes the industry and consequently even some of the films less like art or entertainment to enjoy and more like just cogs in a wheel. In a way, I don't like this because it is almost like history is written even before it happens. It makes it tougher for smaller films to compete, for breakthroughs that would change the rhetoric, or even for filmgoers to have options, including the option to like/not like a movie because it has already been decided for them. This takes me back to about 20 years ago when I was not a big fan of the oscars because I felt like I was being told what to like or not like. Even though I do like several of the nominated films I've seen, I'm not as quick anymore to just go see movies because of this hype. Same as for heavily advertised films. Kind of like at the end of Oppenheimer, when he gets his medal/award - "It's all for them, not for you."

@singstreetcar5881

It was a remake just like West Side story. It had oprah and speilberg backing it. It was a tony winning musical. The original was nominated for many oscars but didn't win any, so people thought the academy will try to rewrite its wrongs by nominating this new version and rewarding it. That's why people put Danielle brooks as a front runner for best supporting actress
