Reading & Northern Railroad's all-day Reading-to-Jim Thorpe excursion trains return for the season on April 6, 2024.
This ride takes passengers from Reading Outer Station in Reading, PA to Jim Thorpe, on the southern half of the RBMN mainline. The ride features a variety of terrain including river crossings, farm fields, small towns, a tunnel, a bridge with amazing views, lakes, and mountains.
In this video, I'll show you where to pickup your tickets at Reading Outer Station, introduce you to the Rail Diesel Cars (RDCs), walk through RDC #9166, and check out the seating and other comforts. Then we'll hop on board so you can see some of the scenic highlights of the ride and some of the things you can do during your time in Jim Thorpe.

Good morning Jamie. I hope you're having a fantastic morning so far. That was excellent. Thank you for the inside scoop. I like that you say we now instead of They! The perks of having a dream job employment!❤

Good afternoon Dennis! I can't begin to tell you how awesome it is to be part of my favorite railroad now. Not exaggerating when I say it's a childhood dream come true. Hoping for bigger and better things with them soon too.

Thanks, and you're welcome! Jim Thorpe is one of my favorite places on earth. It's getting over-touristed these days, but that's because so many enjoy it's beauty and charm.

Thanks Calvin! I love the painted ceilings on these cars. The guy who used to do them recently retired though, so I don't believe there will ever be any more painted.

Another excellent PR video, it wouldnt surprise me if the RDCs become even more popular than they already are, too bad they dont have a large fleet of them. (I know theres a couple more being worked on though.) (Ive seen several more RBMN freight cars on VRF, in the most unusual places!)

Thanks, Paul! It's always fun to see where RBMN freight cars turn up on VRF. They'll eventually have five operating RDCs, and I know they'd like to have more. People who ride them seem to really enjoy them.

@@JamieMakin ive seen on others videos that a shortline in New England has one or two operational RDCs, that will soon be in service.............and theres a branch in Canada that operates two 3-car RDC sets as part of VIA. The way RBMN is headed with passenger service, they might have to go full time with it 🤔❗

Glad you enjoyed this one Scott! I really need to get down there more often, as it is a really cool station. I do have a video coming up with a chase that ends there, I think you'll like it. Lots of other fun stuff in the queue too as I have been out filming a LOT these past few weeks.

That was soo cool, especially with those 1950s Budd RDCs! I visited Tamaqua, PA and spent Thanksgiving there back in 2009. The relatives that I had that lived in Tamaqua, brought me to the Hometown High Bridge, to show me this line. (I didn't know the heritage of this line or whether or not it was active or had been abandoned at this time, as I'm not a native of the East Coast) At the time, it looked as if there was a tie replacement project being done on these tracks, including on the Hometown High Bridge, as the "guard rails" had been removed. (I thought maybe the line was in the process of being "restored", if the line was abandoned previously ) This trackage might have still had the Reading Company's 100 Pound "stick rail" from the 1930s. (I've seen rails rolled by Carnegie Steel from much earlier on active lines, as far back as the early 1900s) I saw evidence that this line was at one time, a double track mainline including the Hometown High Bridge. (The bridge towers looked like at had two trackways on it historically, including the abutments) This could have have been "single tracked" by the Reading or later on after Reading was absorbed by Conrail in 1976. Conrail has "butchered" a lot of lines in the Northeast, including the former Erie Lackawanna mainline between upstate New York and Chicago, Illinois. Keep up the good work, stay safe and God bless.

Thanks for sharing all those cool memories, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Hometown High Bridge was designed to be double tracked, but a second line was never installed. I don't believe there's any plans to do so, but it's cool to know it's an option.

@@JamieMakin O.k. thanks for that, I stand corrected. I thought this railroad line was a double track line historically.

As for the RDCs, heres a little known fact, each one is capable of pulling a standard coach, the long defunct Minneapolis & St. Louis did just that to increase passenger seating. Sooooooo, when three of them are running as a set, a coach could theorhetically be put between the end ones and the middle one, but i am not sure how they would connect the multiple unit lines for the RDCs.
@JamieMakin
@JamieMakin 3 месяца назад
That's quite different from what I've heard. My understanding is that even though they're capable of pulling coaches, Budd did not want railroads doing so with them. Running them with anything other than other RDCs voided their warranty too form what I heard.

Jamie, any updates on 9169 and 9170?
@JamieMakin
@JamieMakin 3 месяца назад
The "new" RDCs are 9163, 9164, and 9165. From what I understand 9164 is close to being ready to put into service. I'm very much looking forward to that! 9165 will be worked on next, but I believe it needs a lot of work, so we won't see it anytime soon. 9163 sadly seems like it'll just be used for parts, though there's the option to turn it into a regular coach.
