Did you know that you can "read" temples? What if all of the temples around the world today constituted a vast library of new scripture just waiting to be read if we had eyes to see?
This presentation covers some basic concepts relating to LDS Symbology and a guide to approaching the subject of learning symbolism.
The views and opinions expressed in this video are not endorsed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and all images are copyright of they respective owners.

I’m about 10 minutes into the video. About the section where it mentions how people sometimes try to change the meaning of symbols, with the pentagram now being more associated with the occult rather then the 5 wounds of Christ. It got me thinking of other examples, like the rainbow being connected with pride. Also looked up the motif of the Ogden temple, where I live, and it is desert plants, and roses, representing the desert blossoming as a rose. Also I have been looking a little into Hebrew, and was astounded to learn that their alphabet, also are numbers, AND items, like tents for wandering, bulls for strength etc..

I am certain you know, that the sacred language of numerology and symbols have been forgotten by most of the children of Ephraim save Hugh Nibley, Truman Madson, Cleon Skousen, Elder McConkie etc, our brethren of Judah have never forgotten but passed the knowledge during the disapora from one generation to another generation. Judah teaches Hebrew is the pure Adamic language and God used symbols, numbers and musical scales to breathe life into creation. Thus, as Ephraim, our understanding of the language of numerology and symbols are far behind Judah. So I am happy for you're good work and pray our Lord's blessings upon you.

The Kirtland Temple window is a "Gothic" arch, which replaced the Romanesque (circular) arch in the Middle Ages due to its superior strength (it was approaching what we now know to be the optimum shape y=cosh x). You'll see it in every church in Europe built between 1200 and around 1600, and in many churches in America - particularly during the 19th Century Gothic revival.

I include a quote from author Denver Snuffer in the video at one point. Although the video and original presentation were produced before there was any controversy, I stand by the use of the quote in the presentation. I believe the quote in and of itself to be a truth well-said and contributes to the rest of the material in the presentation.

I have not completed your video so I hope this isn't a question you have answered but I noticed that the Mesa Arizona temple has no spires or a Moroni. Do you know why, and is this significant?
@chrisblanc663
@chrisblanc663 Месяц назад
Sorry this took a while to get to you. Answer. Spires and Moroni aren’t a requirement on temples, just very common. For the Mesa temple, they wanted to emphasize something else with the architecture. My guess would be something along the lines of being solid, like a firm foundation. I think it also has shades of the gathering of Israel from the 4 corners. I’m sure I’m missing things, but gets you started on thinking of its symbols.

This Video is pure light among so much darkness. Thanks, sincerely. I personally find the symbolic language the very fine way to teach and learn the Truth, because you can create a vast amount of symbols out of observation and experience and transmiting them to others. But the symbols & figures that already exist (or you create), they themselves have no meaning, but the ones you assign them, and that sole fact says much about your person, your mind, your knowledge, your hopes, your beliefs.

The Bible is full of symbols , have you not read the book of Isaiah, he spoke in symbols. Jesus also spoke in parables and many of his parables were full of symbolisms. The book of revelation is also full of symbolisms. These people who are mocking symbolisms, I don't think have ever read the scriptures. The Heavens are open, and we can get answers through prayer, Jesus said learn of me, So study it and then ask and he will give you the answer through the Holy Ghost and in his own way. But you won't get it from these people who thank they know everything.

You have taken a much deeper dive into this than what I first expected. But, there is more that you may probably be aware of, but were beyond the scope of this video. Good catch about the creation being a division. I don't know anybody else who realized this. The endowment ceremony (at least the way it used to be) is loaded with symbolism. The Five Points are symbolic, but in reality, there are seven points. The Square and the Compass are tools of the "Carpenter", and they symbolize, among other things, the Strait and the Narrow. There is a lot more to be said about the endowment. I wish the church was stop cutting out parts of it that they don't understand, and start teaching people what the symbolism means. The Moroni statue facing Southeast: Joseph Smith specified the order in which the cornerstones of a temple are supposed to be laid. The Southeast corner is laid first, because it had the greatest light. Incidentally, the temple at Jerusalem faced East, meaning that when you entered it and faced the Holy of Holies, you were facing West. The North is symbolically the place where God and His council dwell: Isa 14:13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: There is a great deal of symbolism in the Hebrew alphabet, in the shape and numbers of each letter, and in the words formed from those levels. There are you tube videos where Jewish rabbis explain this.

Stephen, It's One Lord one faith one baptism. 2 Nephi 25:26 26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. Why should we worry about what others think of us, do we have more confidence in their opinions than we do our own? Brigham Young I think most Christian's under one Lord on faith one baptism. Think they can or are going to quote un-quote "save us", not realizing. We all are Gods Children. Simply because we came from Him. To go back to Him. Ecclesiastes 12:7- That it's Not a different quote un-quote "Jesus Christ" if you will. But the same God. Under one banner- of "just that", One Lord one faith one baptism. Making it we all become brothers & sister of Heavenly Father by simple default. We all lived with Heavenly Father in a premortal life before Earth was created, and we are supposed to return The writer explains that we existed before the earth was created - Proverbs 8:22-31 We began as spirits before we had bodies of flesh - Galatians 3:3 Christ states that no man goes to Heaven unless he originally came from there in the first place - John 3:13 We knew our Heavenly Father as adults long before ever coming to earth and also had duties and assignments - Jer. 1:5 We are "absent" from our Heavenly Father, meaning we were already there once and are to return - 2 Corinthians 5:6-7 The Father made promises to all of us before the earth was even created, thus we all already existed to hear it - Titus 1:2 Job is chastened for not remembering that he was part of a pre-existing population before the earth was created - Job 38:4-7 Heavens (plural!)and Earth are physical and were created simultaneously (meaning spirits already existed) - Genesis 2:1 A person is describing how she, along with all the other Sons of God (angels), existed in a habitable place with God before the earth was even created - Proverbs 8:22-31 Councils or meetings take place in Heaven, "Sons of God" (we are his children) are those who attend - Job 1:6, Luke 2:31 The method of the creation of man's physical makeup was an agreement made by pre-existing spirits (plural) - Gen. 1:26 Heavenly Father actual father of our spirits in premortal life- Jeremiah 1:5, Hebrews 12:9, Job 38:4-7, Genesis 1:26 Christ asks to come back to our Heavenly Father as before the world was created - John 17:5 Christ, sitting in Judgment in Heaven, mentions promises he made to us before the creation - Matthew 25:34 Christ, while in Heaven, tells us we get to inherit kingdoms that were promised to us before creation - Matthew 25:34

I am an author and have written a book called, "How Beautiful: A Pictorial History of the Logan LDS Temple" and also produced in in a DVD form. I am beginning to study symbolism. There is some interesting symbolism on the Logan Temple if you just know where to look. Most people miss it when visiting that historic structure. Thanks for making this video. I appreciate it. One needs to understand symbolism to truly enjoy going to the temple. I feel that my level would be the equivalent of going to the first day of college in a chemistry class when you are planning on going all the way and getting your Phd! Essentially one has to think artistically to absorb it in my opinion. Thanks for putting this presentation together. It has been extremely helpful!
@stevereedatx
@stevereedatx 10 лет назад
I think that's what makes it fun. As intimidating as it seems as a subject of study, it isn't something that you ever "get", comparing it to thinking artistically isn't a bad way to look at it. I think that sometimes we feel like symbolism is more like a mathematical problem where we have all these elements and they all add up to something, a final answer, and we need to find that answer. I believe this approach to be erroneous. There isn't some grand puzzle to solve, symbolism more of a tool for continued introspection and learning. The symbols do not point to themselves, they point to something else, something higher. It's more important to understand HOW symbolism works rather than understanding WHAT the symbols mean, in my opinion. How symbolism works can be easily understood.

Non-lds here. The problem of sun worship has been around since mankind began to follow/worship false gods. That sun worship problem was alive and well in ancient Israel, in the entire history of the Catholic church, and is alive and well today. God gave the instructions for building the tabernacle so that the rising sun would be to the backs of those entering in. In essence, the very layout of the old testament tabernacle was a rebuke of the sun god so that the people would not be misguided into worshiping a false idol.

@oneclimbs
@oneclimbs 6 лет назад
Literally anything can be occultism. I can start a cult today based around donuts (and it would probably be a popular cult, but we have Krispy Kreme so there's that) and then donuts would be occult. Meaning is derived from context. Just because one group says that something means X to them doesn't give it some kind of divine trademark. All things belong to God and everything, in the right context, points to goodness and light. Context is essential for communication and meaning. The cross or two lines intersecting is probably found in some way, shape or form in every religion, science or though system known to man, as is the circle and the triangle. It depends on what someone is trying to communicate.
@tyndale25
@tyndale25 6 лет назад
The cross and the fish are both Satanic symbols that Constantine had Christians adopt. But symbols represent what the one who incorporates them wants them to represent. It is like a marker to remind you of something. No outsider can come in and try to say what they think they mean. They simply mean what they were intended to mean.

If Mormonism isn't connected to the paganism of the ancient Egyptian aristocracy, how do you explain the enormous obelisk that commemorates the birthplace of Joseph Smith? How about the large obelisk atop the Mormon bank in Boise Idaho? Maybe you can explain the connection to the Swiss Pharoahs and the Swiss Octagon.
@stevereedatx
@stevereedatx Год назад
Good question and I don't think any concrete answers exist that I could point to on that. I think the first thing to understand is that symbols in and of themselves do not have meaning, we give them meaning. Sometimes we use the symbols because of the meanings others have created, but it is equally true that symbols are used over and over again by different groups who assign new and often completely different meanings. There are too many examples of this to mention. The Nazis with the swastika, the LGBT movement and the rainbow, the Christians and the cross, etc. It's important to note that the ideology using the symbol in a particular way may have completely different meanings assigned, but some of those meanings may be connected to the original. For example, the Joseph's Smith obelisk may have bene selected for similar reasons to the George Washington obelisk. Or there could have been entirely different reasons, one of which being that in our modern age an obelisk is instantly recognizable as a monument. The obelisk is 38.5 feet tall which represents Joseph's age when he died. I can tell you as a designer myself that it is common to look among the vast designs of the world for inspiration. Often certain meanings associated with symbols are a reason for or against using a particular symbol. Sometimes there are symbols used that have absolutely no connection to very negative meanings by certain groups. A very common graphical element, a heart within a heart is something I have created as part of at least two projects I can think of in the past. One was an icon to represent "relationships" and the graphic came out of just simple aesthetics without any thought to meaning. But unfortunately, maybe a decade after I learned that this was a symbol used by pedophiles apparently. I subsequently changed the graphic! But I do see very often people implying guilt or suspicion to different groups because of the designs they choose to use. Now, I agree that some of that is likely very intentional, but I would suggest that much of it is not and that we need to be very careful about our assumptions. I think the best course of action is to simply ask those who use particular symbols what they think they mean to them. If it were a simple issue, there wouldn't be so much confusion, but the nature of symbolism is entirely subjective which means you cannot really nail down absolutes to symbols. What symbols mean is whatever a person says they mean and that can change wildly from time to time or group to group.

why is the all seeing eye on the temple though? i got the triangle/pyramid/illuminati symbol down now and understand, and the pentagram, and the upside down cross. but why is the eye on our temple as well?
@stevereedatx
@stevereedatx 9 лет назад
Mormonism, was originally seen as a philosophy that embraced all truth and sought to gather all the truth in the world into one place, and a proper context. The all-seeing eye is a representation of God's omniscience and it predates the Illuminati and Masonry. All their symbols were hijacked to begin with. In D&C 130:7-9 it says that God lives on a world that is like a great "urim and thummim" where all things are present before him, past, present, and future. It seems as though temple builders seek to use any and all symbols on the temples and reclaiming them or "restoring" them to a proper context where the real power behind the symbol can be understood. Otherwise we surrender all the best symbols that illustrate the most powerful characteristics of God to the adversary. Does that make sense? People use symbols to communicate ideas and express their beliefs. What else can you use other than what already exists? If you are a human being, you have a limited number of ways to communicate. You have to use what is commonly understood and at your disposal. I think it is safe to assume that Satan doesn't create, he covets the best of what God has and is. I'll bet that if you look into the symbolism used by the worst of the worst, you will find a positive usage that predates the negative because everything goes back to the creator and Satan is not the creator.

Symbols don't just have one meaning. Things like eyes, triangles, squares, circles, flowers, shapes, numbers, etc. are all created by God, they are his. Anyone can use them to communicate any message they want. The serpent was the symbol of Satan in Eden, but Moses created a brass serpent as something to look to for salvation. Just like letters of the alphabet, if you focus too much on the letters you will miss what is trying to be communicated through the words.

You need to research the polar configuration and Kolob to truly understand the cosmic application and prevalence of the all seeing eye in the sky, or the apple of the eye or the great immovable sun god of the past - Saturn aka Kronos aka Father time aka Ba'al. The star of creation NTR KOB is Saturn and it, along with other planets used to be much closer to the earth in times past. They will return again before the 2nd coming.

I'd be interested to hearing some of your research on the subject. I'm familiar with the cube representing the presence of God. There are connections to this in the ancient temple and in the Book of Revelation. I don't claim that the square only represents the earth, symbols can represent many things depending on the context. This video represents one perspective, you could approach the subject from a variety of angles, that's part of the point I was trying to make.

It’s odd to see where all of these religions get their symbols from and what they think they can use it for. When I did my research I learned that some wiccans and paganists used the star (pentagram or sometimes pentacle) that represents the five elements- fire, water, air, earth and idea to mainly keep evil spirits at bay. But when the catholic church came along they didn’t want wiccans to practice “witchcraft” along with using the pentagram because they wanted their people to not know anything but the poorly ‘translated’ bible at the time and wanted money from them. So they decided to clarify that witchcraft and paganism is a cult and is a sin. Because they didnt do things the way the church wanted them to. Anyways, a lil history lesson to maybe leave some pondering abt the history of symbols

Why does the first book of Mary was the mother of God, but later versions say Mary is the mother of the son of god? Why was it revised? If Joseph Smith the gold plates and those gold plates said that polygamy was bad, how come the doctrines and covenants say it's okay or vice versa. Why did the alleged prophet Joseph Smith if polygamy was wrong according to God's word do it himself mark why isn't there any geographical proof of the places mentioned in the book of Mormon why is there no archaeological evidence? How do you guys test the spirits of Mormonism to know if it is true if you cannot read any book that's not affiliated or proved by the Mormon church. It's almost like the leadership doesn't want people thinking for themselves but just following blindly.

+pinky pink very understandable as many movies and videos have the upside down pentagram with a goats head in it. But there upside-down pentagrams in the Melbourne Australia Cathedral www.flickr.com/photos/d-l-j-h/386347105/in/photostream/ as well as early Christian art: www.themorgan.org/collection/medieval-and-renaissance/manuscript/msm710f19v?id=80 An upside down-pentagram is also used on our nation's congressional medal of honor. If I saw a swastika floating around I would get the same creepy feeling, but I believe that has more to do with what Hitler used it for than how that symbol has been used throughout history. As for believing in Jesus- we believe it is only through Him and His Grace that we are saved. We also believe that He wants us to be like Him and His Father-but never equal to or greater. The Bible speaks of the children of God being offered , "All that the Father Hath" to to righteous. But respect to your personal beliefs.

My premise, and one that I think is fairly solid, is that if God is the source of all creation and truth, then Satan is the creator of nothing and is simply a rebel against light. If God created all things, then all shapes, geometry, numbers, symbols, and literally ALL things are his. If anyone is using any of "his stuff" to teach their own ideas then they are only using what already exists. Babylon doesn't pre-date God, nor does any other culture so, yes, they hijacked, or rather, they used what already existed for their own purposes. God doesn't need anyone else's permission to use his own stuff. Darkness is eliminated when light is present, and putting something back where it belongs, in my opinion, only adds more light.

At what point in one's "climb" does the grace of God come in? And what words did Jesus speak that led you to believe you must climb up a ladder of godliness? Isn't it, rather, that you should understand certain concepts, and not necessarily DO religious rituals (man made disciplines)? Also, want to address Genesis. What's the difference between gods (Elohim - plural word) and the LORD God? Why are there two terms for the same being (as most people think)? And why do the Elohim have to speak what they will do BEFORE they do it - while the LORD God just DOES things without first giving a hint as to what He is deliberating internally? Did the LORD God say, I shall mold Man out of the dust, and then, do it? No. He just did it. Before taking Adam's rib, He said, it is not good that Man be alone. Still, He didn't say, I shall replicate a female form of Man, from his rib, for his companionship. Again, He just did it. But first, He formed out of the ground every beast of the field, and fowl of the air, and brought them to Adam, to see what he would call them. But still, "there was not found an help meet for him." So He caused Adam to sleep deeply, while his rib was taken. Interestingly enough, that is the least intrusive place to take stem cells from an adult. And, theoretically, with the right equipment, one can be cloned, yet even made female. And technically, this is the only way. Because a man has XY chromosomes, the X can be doubled. But what could not happen was woman being made first, and man cloned from her. Because, where do you get the Y chromosome? It's my opinion that the gods made this world. Dividing, creating. And the LORD God created Adam and Eve to prepare all of Man for the deliverance of Jesus, by the blood. We were initially created for bad purposes, angels caught in a snare. Tricked into creating flesh, and thinking it's good, but actually angering God. The LORD God did not create us because He so loved the world. He saved us for this reason. John 3:16 Why should we exempt lesser gods from the ability to create? Also confusing is that Cain is worried that everywhere he goes he'll be hunted, for killing his kin. Well, if only Adam and Eve, his mother and father, exist on Earth... what is he worried about? And who does he later take as a wife? Some girl that is part of the humanity that the gods made, is my answer. Some time later, Adam and Eve bare Seth. In 900 years they only have a few kids. CONFUSING. Um, the pill? hahaha Does God have an image, that we can be made in the image thereof? The word for image in Genesis is phantom, vein show. Does that remind you of God? Or is God a Spirit, like the wind? Is God described in the Bible as having human body parts? So, why do so many people think we are made in the image of God? It's stupid. That's not what the book says. Thou shalt worship none of the Elohim before Him. Elohim said, let us, LET us, together make a decision and commit ourselves to this action; make man in the image of angels/gods/magistrates/Elohim(PLURAL), which we are. You know? There is no ONE good, but the Lord God. One is plural? Since when?

Grace enables the climb. I'm not climbing toward godliness but toward knowledge. My soul is in the hands of God but my mind and its development is in my hands. Rituals are a form of worship. They explain the covenants of God and illustrate his promised blessings. Like scripture, they can teach and instruct. They can be empty forms or deeply meaningful depending on your frame of mind. I don't know everything, I'm a fairly regular person. I have a job and family and I enjoy studying the gospel and experiencing life. You have some interesting ideas and I hope that one day we will get to explore everything as in depth as we would like to. God cannot be summarized or even explained in any way that would do justice to him, but I can say that I know that God is love. I used to never know if there was a God or not and probably would have been a very nihilistic person had I not learned certain things. I'm not a Mormon because of things I have studied, but because of things I have experienced. I could criticize Mormonism better than most non-Mormons because I know it very well inside and out. I understand many of its flaws as well as what makes it special. In this life, we will all have a unique experience and be provided with adequate means to fulfill our purposes. Everyone does not need to be a Mormon do accomplish this. I respect your path, blessings to you on your journey.

Isn't Moroni some dead guy, an unclean spirit? Isn't that more important than symbolism? Joseph Smith was said to "translate" the Gold Plates using a seer stone, an object of darkness which relied upon calling up the spirits (wizardry/necromancy) in order to locate hidden treasures. Isn't that more important? I'm just thinking that the meanings behind the symbols are more important than the symbols themselves. And I'm thinking that truth is most important, greater than all things. If a church is founded by an unclean spirit through the powers of dark magic, isn't that more important than its symbology?

The Pentagram represents the Star of Saturn and the worship of other planets, aka celestial beings. Google "Saturn worship". Mormonism is actually the worship of celestial beings disguised as a Christian sect, literally Roman paganism in disguise. Jesus is just a celestial god in Mormonism, literally the "son of a god" in the Roman sense living here in our solar system. A local celestial god who rules planet earth, which is the god Saturn. The "Aquila of Rome" is the eagle seen in Mormon symbolism. Rome is where these pagan beliefs came from. Jude in the bible warns that certain people had nestled in with them, he called them "wondering stars". This was a direct reference to the planets which were known as wondering stars since they didn't move with the other stars in the night sky but had their own path. This is apparently what happened to the original Mormon Christians, some wondering stars nestled in with them and lead them into a form of paganism in disguise using carefully crafted metaphors in texts that literally appear to have come from outer space. Freemasons worship celestial beings. So seeing that the symbols of celestial worship are all over Mormon buildings leads me to suspect that LDS was created by a very well funded committee of people who held such beliefs and likely still control and profit from the church today. The LDS church was created to trick Christians into celestial pagan worship. If you want to be a true follower of the real Jesus Christ and not some pagan god named Jesus then you do need to get out of the Mormon church and join the rest of the community of Christian believers. I'm not saying this to in any way denounce Mormons as not being sincere and I'm not even denouncing pagan worship as not sincere. It's just a matter of what god you believe in. I believe in the Judaeo/Christian God who is the transcendent Creator of the Universe I do not worship local celestial beings.

Just because a symbol has a particular meaning in one particular ancient culture/religion, does not mean that's the only application of it, or that anyone else using it can only have that in mind. Buddhists still use the swastika and don't give a crap that Hitler hijacked it and that now it is associated, to the western world, with Nazism. The Romans stole their pagan ideas from the Greeks; the Greeks got their ideas developed from more ancient concepts; which could very well be an eventual apostasy from God's people at any point back in time -Moses time? Joseph's (Egypt) time? Abraham's time? Enoch? Noah? The symbols could have had different meanings before the Greeks and then Romans took and reformed those ideas. Christians have taken and re-purposed pagan symbols from the start and all throughout the history -the fish symbol, the star, the Christmas tree, etc., ALL previous pagan symbols.

Jim, the Catholic Church is the worlds biggest political party, and most certainly doesn't teach Christianity, as based upon the teachings of Christ. Catholicism is based upon Mythraism, an old pagan religion. The beginnings and intentions of the Catholic Church: Constantine was Emperor of Rome in the late 390'sA.D. Since the death of Christ, Christianity had been growing, with the Roman Empire losing power in the Middle East. This was evident to Constantine, and he realized he needed to create something which would somehow brings this new religion, Christianity, back into the power base of the Roman Empire, if Rome was going to retain it's influence across the then known world. In approx. 398A.D. Constantine brought all the various religious leaders together, at the Council of Nicea, where he proposed a scenario which would appease the Christians, as well as the other religions, and in turn Rome would retain it's political and financial influence. The Catholic Church was created at this time, but it wasn't pure Christianity, it was, and still is, a mixture of Christianity and Paganism. As I mentioned earlier, the Roman religion was Mythraism, with one of their gods being Dagon. Dagon is still represented in Catholicism, with the Mitre's the Pope and Cardinals wear. It is well known that Constantine removed/destroyed many scriptures from the original teachings of Christ which were written down in letters between the various Apostle's, etc, in an attempt to make the masses believe that the only way to Heaven was through the new Church, the Pagan based Catholic Church. If you go hunting for yourself, you will find the relevant information which supports what I've mentioned above. One thing I don't understand, is with all the atrocities the Catholic Church has committed since it's creation, and still these atrocities occur today, how anyone can believe that Christ's teachings are being taught to the people by the Catholic Church!?!? Rampant PAEDOPHILIA, MURDERS, the ANNIALATION and TORTURE of peoples across the world......Christ did not teach these actions, he taught AGAINST them.
