If you want a busy station to see freight trains you will not be disappointed visiting Reading West Station, I also had two short visits to the main Reading Station during my 3 hours in Reading.
They were such great days when we had so many great locos working the Inter City trains. Reading was one of the first station I visited when I got into the hobby of taking the number, and I remember seeing the prototype HST and lots of Western locos plus class 45s 47s 50s. Thanks for watching mate.
When in the area I always spent more time at Basingstoke. Reading West and Reading are great places too. I'm heading Leicester may 6th. My first jolly boys outing in a year. Thanks for uploading Mike, great stuff.
Morning Richard, yes Basingstoke as I like to film the freight coming across the junction. Well enjoy you outing up the line to Leicester on May 6th, I've been there a few times lately filming the HSTs. Cheers for watching Mike.
As a Reading based I love to see my hometown getting some attention! The main reason it's so good for freight is because it is the perfect point where stone trains and intermodals cross over. Great video, very enjoyable!
Well Jakey you live in a very good area for filming freight trains as you said, but also in years gone bye it was a brilliant place to be with so many great classics of locos to see like 37,45,47,50,52, and not forgetting the great HSTs. Thank you very much for your comment and interest in my video. Mike.
Absolutely brilliant!! All I can say is wow!! Absolutely terrific! Another tremendous video! Cracking shots and captures there! Loved 60055 and the doubleheaded 59! Looks like a brilliant station, loads of action! Job well done as well! Excellent in every shape or form! Fantastic camera work and detail as usual! What a great way to spend your 3 hours there! Loved the DB TnT as well, wonder why that was. A perfect example of why I recommend your excellent channel! Really enjoyed, thanks for sharing! Keep up the fabulous work! Take care, stay safe and well, keep up the fabulous, inspiring and enjoyable videos we all appreciate your time and effort into them! All the best!
Well my friend all I can say after that absolutely cracking comment of my video is THANK YOU, and when you can get down there during the week and enjoy your time there. Mike.
This is why I have subscribed to your video's Mike..... Bloody brilliant!!!!.... I've been watching this just before I have my next lot of treatment in the ozzy my friend.... Been telling the consultant about you posting these wonderful videos..... She laughed and said WELL, IT KEEPS YOU OUT OF MISCHIEF.... Bless her.... She thinks I'm potty bud, but..... I'm probably am... Keep up the jolly good work Mike.... Regards to Mrs Mike and the dog. With the greatest respect from Nige.
Oh Nige you are to kind mate talking like this about my videos, but as you know I do really appreciate it and I too think I'm bloody mad sometime but I cant help being mad when it comes to trains. From what you have told me since your biopsy (still not had mine) it sounds like you are having some sort chemo, so I really hope it is doing the job. We have to take our dog Dolly to the vets this morning as she is scratching parts of her body a lot which this is the third time with the same problem, so anther £100 I suppose. OK Nige you take care till next time we chat like this. Mike.
10 out of 10 Mike... Yeah I'm having chemo. Been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a couple of weeks ago..... I'm not giving up my work though.... I'm really so sorry to hear about Dolly the dog bud... Hope all goes well for her today my friend..... As you're a knowledgeable guy about railway related topics, perhaps you can answer me a question my friend..... Was was the class 40 loco called.... A BUCKET??? We used to call them that back in the hay day of the 70s..... With the most kindest regards from Nige..... Safe one buddy.
Haven't seen this station in more years than i care to remember. Way back in the 50's we lived in Catherine street which is not far from the station. My dad and I were both born in Battle Hospital which i have been told is no longer there. Got lots of lovely memories of this area of Reading.
I bet you have Stephen, I don't live there and I have seen changes myself, so you would be shocked what they did to that great station which you know it as Reading General. Thanks for watching.
You hooked me with the Class 60. For me, a 60 in smart livery, always steals the show. They look bang up to date. A pity the arse dropped out of things just when they were launched. You’ve found a great location there, such variety. Really enjoyed that. Cheers.
Oh that's good mate, I do like to capture a class 60 when I can, I have been thinking its time I did another video just about this class. Thank you very much for your the interest in this video. Regards Mike.
Quite agree Mike, had a spell there last Wednesday afternoon. If only I'd remembered my coat I could have stopped a little longer.🤔☹️. Well done Mike, stay safe 🤓💙
@@antman09ful1, I had taken my daughter across from Norwich to Oxford for an operation at the John Ratcliffe hospital and was amusing myself. Yes it was nice when I left Oxford, so the coat got left in the car. 🤔 I'll not make that mistake again.
Well, I just spotted this video, you are making the Reading area interesting again. To me, Reading meant Huntley & Palmers and Reading Corporation Trolleybuses. Being originally a Windsorian, Reading was my County Town, loved also for it's Thames Valley Traction and Smiths of Reading Coaches. All of those mentioned, can never be replaced, but your video's will ignite my interest in the Reading area again. I now live in Brighton, which is nothing like Reading at all, so I have subscribed to your channel, to keep a link to dear Reading. I viewed all of the comments, so realise that you have gone through a few worries recently, so be strong and never give up. Norm
Well Norm that was a very complete comment of things you was interesting in when you was younger in Reading. I did upload a video of a old class 40 during the same time, but I am from the West Midlands so you will not see lots of videos from your old town. Thank you for subbing my channel, and I hope you find another video which might interest you in the coming weeks as I normally upload a video every few days from somewhere around the country. Have a good day in Brighton. Cheers Mike.
Good to see you have been venturing further afield.Reading always was a great place to observe plenty of freight action.Sadly it's out of range for me these days! Live long and prosper. Paul the Steelyman.
Well Paul as you say that area has always been good especially when we had loads of proper blue locos about, Its a shame you are to far away these days to get there. Thanks for watching Mike.
Some great footage in this Mike. I also went out today. Heard a class 68 climbing Hatton Bank long before it bore into view just north of Lapworth.....
Yes they do make a great sound which you can hear for a long time, you was lucky as there is just the one set running at the moment. I was walking around Hatton with the wife and dog on Saturday too Julian.
@@antman09ful1 Blimey, I WAS lucky! Alas my trips out this week are cancelled as I am now working every one of my days off due to diversions and the fact I sign all routes....Stenson diversions at night and all via Toton this weekend I'm being told.
I'd still love to know why the class 40 was nicknamed THE BUCKET.... Thank you for your kindness and support mate.... To be honest with you mate, I just feel drained through being sick my friend.... Glad to hear that Dolly is on the mend.... Give her a hug from me please mate.
It's ok when you go and you know what's gonna run. Yes it can be brilliant but it can also be crap. I have stood there of a morning for 3 hours and seen 3 freght and a track machine.
Well Keith all the times I've been there its been great, so I haven't a answer why that has happened to you, I only went to see the scrap train to Newport. When I leave home I don't know 100% what I will see mate.
Morning Mike. Hope you’re ok 👍🏻 Nice seeing the jumbo train. I remember them before the 59s came. Reading was fantastic in the BR days. I caught the Manchester Piccadilly Brighton service many times. Good seeing the X coal hoppers converted to carry aggregates instead of being scrapped. Does the OLE go all the way too Basingstoke? I’m in Burslem today near the EMD depot. I did see the class 56s waiting for conversation into 69s as I drove past. I made Basford hall yesterday on my bike as I was in Shevington. Nice you’re getting out and about and the weather is better so you can make more excellent train videos 😂 Take care cheers Stevie.
Pleased to here that bike is getting some action Stevie, so you must of seen that sorry sight of the line of class 86s at Crewe Basford, the OLE doesn't go to Basingstoke Stevie but goes towards Newbury. Yes the weather has been good but getting colder next week because we are having a few day away. Ok Stevie I'm off out now to do some filming. Cheers Mike.
I'm new to your channel I always watch the the American freight trains but never watch British ones I'm not interested in trains love watching this sort of videos 👍🇬🇧
How did you get on with Dolly at the vets today Mike.... I'm so sorry that I didn't message you sooner only I wasn't feeling well today mate.... Hope she's OK bud.
Nige your treatment will knock you about I would think, I was lucky when I had chemo for six weeks inserted into my dick, as I had bladder cancer, so you have a rest mate, Dolly had two lots of tables and some cream which did cost use £103 but it seams its helping her now. Thanks Nige for asking about our Dolly, but you please take care of yourself. All the best till next time. Mike.
@@antman09ful1 Just wondering with the amount of wagons that look like they maybe carrying aggregate or something. Seen on other vids over weekend periods where track maintenance was taking place with the same type of trains going back and forth. Tim.
Kung Fu Witcher Reading is on the main route for Mendip Rail trains running from their quarries near Westbury towards London discharge locations, hence the abundance of aggregate traffic
Well Antony that something I have no control over, If had been using a tripod I could have waved to the driver, and then I might have got a toot. Thank you for your comment and for watching my footage. Mike.
@@antman09ful1 we see that several engines and cars are from DB (Wrote in red ). DB is Deutsche Bundsbahn. So German train on British tracks or just trains are rent to societies who operates in GB, It is a question for me
@@antman09ful1 thanks for your reply. No, definitely not flat spots. So for example at 7:58 and for the following 10 seconds there’s a droning noise that sounds like an EMU traction motor as each bogie passes.
Hi, A quick question if I may, what is the actual difference between a Class 66 and a Class 59 please? They do look exactly the same...? Cheers, Jon B.
The class 59 has and EMD 645 engine taken from 1970s era US SD40-2s it is lower geared to give a high tractive effort to haul heavy stone trains. The class 66 has a EMD 710 1990s era engine which was new when fitted. It is higher geared in order to pull lighter inter-modal freight trains faster. Both engines deliver similar horsepower. Hope this helps.
@@tonytigersbusesandtrains648 Hi Paul, Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate that. Always good to know someone that has more tech knowledge than me. When I was driving we would either have a Class47 or 2 Class 31's whem hauling 6 wagons of sand together with 6 wagons of stone. A very heavy train... Cheers, Jon B.
