Luv'd this record back in '86. Still listen to it on CD. One of the few Prince-alikes who were able to distinguish themselves as having their own sound...
best-known hit "Oh Sheila,". This song in the US went to number one on the R&B, Pop Charts, and the Hot Dance Club Play charts that year, becoming the first ever single to hold the number one spot on all three of these charts simultaneously. Ready for the World is an American R&B band from Flint, Michigan who scored several moderate pop, soul, and dance hits in the mid- to late-1980s.
I was born in '87 and my brother 15 years prior so we didn't grow up together. The little I knew of his tastes coming up were contained in shoe boxes-a cache of cassette tapes! I would listen and be exposed to this and tons of other mid 80s too early 90s music and I'm so thankful 😩🤘🏽
a lot of people call rftw Minneapolis wannabes I wouldn't go as far as saying that but you can tell they were heavily influenced by the Minneapolis sound and they were damn good especially without the help of Prince or Terry Lewis And Jimmy Jam!!!
INDEED YOU ARE FUCKING RIGHT...THEY WERE A BAD ASS BAND...INFLUENCED BY THE SOUND BUT TOTALLY THEIR OWN FUCKING BAND....TOTALLY...THESE GUYS ARE MOTOWN NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT...FLINT ROCKS...THANKS RFTW....
Robgee..this was hitting in those days...song has incredible energy.they never got the credit,I also believe that da new jack swing came out of this style.
@MegaMrbass ...mannnnnn.......I always loved their musical craftsmanship. Good luck getting a group of brothers together to do r&b/funk and they actually PLAY their own instruments.
I keep hearing the Minneapolis sound comparison ..And For me It's a resounding "No" ..They had a unique sound to me .It was youthful , bouncy , and different then Prince's deep dark sexual vibe ..Melvin had a great voice, which sounded nothing like Prince .Stop all the comparing , and give credit where credit is due .Stop lumping everyone who sounded different into the same space ..And I'm Prince #1 fan .But I could also vibe out to RFTW without saying purple rain ! Lots of bands had this vibe Toni Tony Tone , The Deele ,Mint Condition , ..and the list could go on .Every artist has someone they vibe to , like the sound off , but that doesnt mean they dont have there own voice .Underrated dope band , and Unsung does need this one under their belt .Peace out
In my opinion it did have the Minneapolis sound which was Prince's sound. And not the sound he created for himself but the sound he created for the Time. RFTW just added to it. The chords, basslines, and synths is what gave it that sound Minneapolis was known for.
@@pooneyheat exactly!!! Homegirl ain't understanding and it seems like she has a problem with ppl thinking no one tried to emulate what was hot then. If you remember Ebonee Webb they had a song Something about you which was basically Prince's Head and Detroit's Dreamboy who's songs were "Timey" as well. It ain't like other bands were copying even Zapp made a song Itchin for your twitchin which I think was homage to Prince and Minneapolis. And Stephanie I give em MAJOR credit they were one of my favorites I liked LTC better than their debut album the next album Ruff & Ready was average imo.
+Levi stgermain Oh shit...you're right about the hair! That's gonna be a tough one to pull off. tons of hair gel will be required and even then still not gonna get the same effect...LOL! Fuck it...hair implant it is!!
During a five-year period beginning in '85 --- these Flint, Mi boys were just killing Black Radio with their style, sound and complete masterful musicianship! How do I know this . . . because I was there, and I lived it! #soimpressive #boyswasbad #facts
Takes me back to 1985 in the Army. My wingman and I put many miles on my Subaru between Lawton Oklahoma and Sheppard Air Force Base….it was definitely worth the trip
This music defined an era and offered more than what was on the surface? Was the world ready??? I do not know, all I know I was and still am, love is the music we make, peace is a dream you can not fake, ready for the world they know what is the best cake,to them theyre is no second rate. First class musicians everyday...
It sure feels good to see a RFTW video where all the members of the band are shown and are smiling and having fun. I know Melvin was the unquestioned star of the group (he played instruments too and he wrote most of the group's songs in their run before the New Jack Swing era and after that era), but like I said, this video was a trip for me and other RFTW fans to see the other members of the group getting a chance to shine or be seen.
Dear Jesus please take me back to this. I really want to believe I’m just getting old that’s why I think new music is trash but it’s not me. Young people don’t know what they are missing.
Michigan is shaped like a glove for a reason and its because we cold with it 🤓🤓 dude on the keyboard in the back doing the schoolcraft if you from Detroit you know about that
I was hooked on these guys day 1. I was a young teenager, who had the biggest crush on Melvin ever. When this album came out, I believe Tone Loc had just came out with Wild thing. My aunt took me to Westwood and we brought RFTW's tape. She was not a fan, but she was like let's pop it in the deck lol! She was loving it. I still love these guys! Melvin still fine and aging like wine!
I wish I could go back in time this was and still is good music.Back in the day when you went to a block party, or house party and simply have fun.Love All There Songs. All Classics
RFTW FOREVER!!!!..I remember going to the flea-market a block from my home in Lubbock Texas and bought their first album (cassett tape) back in 85. Tyrone Walls aka "Tigar" was my love interest ,damn them were the good ol days!!!!!!
Long Time Coming is the second album by American R&B group Ready for the World. Three hits were scored from the album, including "Love You Down". It was released in September 30, 1986 on Lyrick Studios and Warner Bros. Records.
We use to dance to this shit.....that synthesizer was and still is so cold....RFTW was one of the last bands in R&B then came the Tonys and Mint Condition....BIGUPS!!!!!! 4 the post
