Point of clarification in case it wasn't clear, this boomerang is not made to come back unlike returning ones (returning boomerangs have an uneven air foil with reverse angles to each wing). This is a hunting boomerang (Its airfoil is an even curve over the top surface), it is made to maintain straight stable flight for the length of it's momentum using the air foil effect to create lift. To get the air foil lift it needs to be thrown horizontally, not the 45 degree or vertical angle you usually need to for a returning one.

The group of native Austrlian's I grew up with had 3 types of boomerangs. The returning boomerang for hunting flocks of birds (multiple throws through a stalked flock would yeild several birds per hunt, or more). If you missed on the first try you might be able to try again quickly after it comes back. If it hits one or more birds they won't return. The hunting boomerang, similar to yours (for hunting larger animals like kangaroos, wallaby or possum). Lastly they had fighting boomerangs, that are larger then hunting with a spike or hook carved into the shorter end (hooked or spiked out & up from the end, to inflick more damage but also act as a pointed wooden axe). The last ones where almost always made from ironwood, very dense wood used the make wooden axe heads from the same people. The hook/spike is surprisingly sharp & tough, the axes will easily cut down softer wood like pine or mango.

10:20 this is false. Although pressure differential explained by the Bernoulli principle is responsible for some lift, the deflection of air at speed is arguably more significant. A flat plane can still produce lift even without stalling as you might have noticed throwing your homemade throwing stick. Additionally, deflection of air would not cause the plane to simply tilt and "weather vein" into a no lift orientation. The air hits the surface uniformly, not as a small point as demonstrated with your hand. If it did cause it to tilt, then the boomerang wouldn't be able to fly up into the air like it did in your intro, it would remain within the plan of the initial throw.

Doesn't it account for a significant percentage though? roughly around 20-15%? Enough of an influence to be important design wise. But beyond that question, from my limited knowledge, I completely agree. I thought most people thought the pressure difference is what produced lift, there's so many things on the internet (importantly youtube) that say that same thing without bringing in the directed stream of air

@@UmTheMuse That's for projectiles that fly straight, at most with a spin perpendicular to the forward direction (I think I worded that right. In other words, its "forward and back" axis). To put into perspective, imagine throwing an arrow like this, it wouldn't stay spinning like this for very long. This rotates along its "up and down" axis which is what stabilizers try to prevent (along with the "left and right")

there is a traditional aboriginal use for the returning boomarang (each tribe has their own name for them) as a hunting weapon. Hunting birds in flocks. They are thrown in the same direction the birds are flying in, and the weapon curves into the flock. If it is successful you hit a bird, if not it comes back
@dazw1761
@dazw1761 2 года назад
My tribe would use mutiple returning Boomerangs called wangim by throwing them or flying them is rapid succesion over the top of water fowl like ducks. The water fowl would think they were getting attacked by larger raptor birds of prey and fly low to the water to get speed ip before they gained height. A net as attached to a tree at one side of the river or creek and pulled tight just as the birds reached the net and were unable to change direction. The returning element was critical in this paticular hunting tactic, as crossing a river or or swimming for your stick each time would be exhausting but if something hits the water the ducks fly up and the net is no longer effective.

Shad, there are actually two "hunting" boomerangs. The first is exactly what you talk about. The second curving type was primarily found in central Australia as a distraction weapon. It was often used by youth learning how to hunt against emus and some kangaroo types. These curving boomerangs are extremely useful in creating an acoustic effect that allows you to herd animals into your ambush site. The classic "wupp a wuppa" of a boomerang curving around a flock of emu is a great way to move them where you want without getting in their sight lines. And as for the metal version of the 'throwing stick' boomerang. Yes, it has been made around alice, many times, and is a very lethal weapon. It can easily take down a red kangaroo, at 50 paces.

@@SimonWoodburyForget he said that the assumption that the lift is generated by the downward deflection of the incoming airstream is wrong even though that actually is the way how the lift is produced. The rounded top surface of the wing isn't there to produce lift but to reduce drag by preventing the (early) detachment of the airstream. I probably don't have to explain that to you. But the explanation in the video is completely false since he immediately dismissed the main mechanism that is producing lift as being wrong.

While you're absolutely correct, there's something to be said about the availability. $10 in material available anywhere in the world vs a $500-$1000 manufactured weapon that requires manufactured ammunition and is restricted by law in many countries make the 44mag less feasible. It's like comparing a club to a war hammer, yes a stick will work, but a hammer will work better.
@hlalakar4156
@hlalakar4156 2 года назад
@@isaacwright407 You're absolutely right. I am not in any way claiming that the sling is a useless weapon. It has been used by both civilians and soldiers for millennia, probably on every continent. In fact, the most powerful pre gunpowder siege weapon, the trebuchet, was just a giant mechanized sling. What I take issue with is people making such outrageous claims. And this was made by National Geographic, who should know better. They just measured the kinetic energy of a sling stone on release, and directly equated it with "stopping power". The two are not at all the same. For example, the recoil from a .44 magnum has the same kinetic energy as the slug it fires, but it doesn't injure the person who shoots it. (Usually. I've seen some weird stuff.) On top of that, you can't really quantify "stopping power" with any concrete metric. Well, I suppose you could do a lab animal LD50 test, but that would be barbaric. Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting. Not my intention. Just trying to be informative. As an interesting side note. a diving peregrine falcon can have more kinetic energy than a 30-06 round.
@T4nkcommander
@T4nkcommander Год назад
Energy is energy, tho. Top slingers have demonstrated the energy is very close to the same. And actually, stones would have MORE stopping power than a bullet due to energy transfer. My 357 punches through armor and shields without much issue, but energy deposition in target is minimal due to it being so small. Indeed, even rifle rounds often dont stop or kill targets - most military calibers are designed to maim more often than kill. So stopping power is less than what you'd get out of a hunting boom, since getting whacked upside the head with a big stick stuns you. So yeah, slung stones have more stopping power, less penetration, and similar general lethality as a Magnum.

The majority of orcs live in a part of the world afflicted by, for lack of a better term, magical radiation(kind of like Eiselcross in Critical Role's Exandria). The orcs are survivalist hunters who primarily worship the Lord of Thorns, who is a god of hunting and a psychopomp. The wing doesn't "just tilt" when hit by air at an angle. That would be the case if the air hits only a point (which would create a torque). The air hits the entire length, hence no torque will be created. The shape of the foil adds to the lift, and not the cause of it.
@dsdy1205
@dsdy1205 2 года назад
Well, it depends. the effect of all the air hitting the wing can actually be averaged into a single point, but what determines whether it will tilt is not the angle of attack, nor where this center of lift is on the wing, but whether the center of mass is forward of the center of lift. If so then it will certainly tilt forwards. The nice thing about boomerangs is that they spin, so that any imbalances between the center of lift and center of mass sort of "cancel out" due to the high speed of the spin.
@raizan1526

Even the "crapy" one Shad made has some aerodynamic lift going on, that's why it reached the 40 meters. A flat wing, like the simpler boomerang, can produce lift given enough speed and angle of attack - the angle relative to the moving air - it is clearly less efective, but the aerodynamic principles are there, the air on the top part moves faster creating the pressure differential needed to generate lift. It can be observed on remote controle toy airplanes, the more simple ones use very flat wings with a slight angle to generate lift.

Every wing that produces any meaningful amount of lift has a AoA greater than 0°. In fact the main mechanism that allows wings to produce lift is the downward deflection of the incoming air. The rounded top surface of the wing is there to reduce drag by preventing a (early) detachment of the airflow.
@dlwatib
@dlwatib 2 года назад
"the air on the top part moves faster" *but mostly it doesn't.* The wing moves through the air, which we have to assume is stagnant in the absence of the wing. The wing's angle of attack pushes down and forward on the air below the wing. The air above the wing moves down into the area of vacuum vacated by the air below the wing. The laminar flow of air closest to the wing is actually pulled forward by the wing as it sticks to the wing. There may be some rearward motion into the vacuum, but there is at least as much forward motion into the same area. Net, the wing pulls air forward with it as it moves through it.

I think that's part of the magic of this channel. On the one hand, shad can be scientific and logical and do a ton of good(?) research. On the other hand... Well, "STICKS ARE AWESOME" He's living proof that thought and research don't have to lower the awesomeness of, well, anything. They can be used to make it even more awesome. And that's a lesson I think a few more people need to learn.

Seeing how excited Chad got when throwing that stick I really think he should throw a few disc golf drives. Perhaps he already has.

I could imagine the throwing stick being somewhat limited as a fantasy weapon. Like all other thrown weapons, the actual speed of the stick is very slow so if you had space to move and saw it coming (especially since it travels pretty straight and is highly visible to the target) it would be very easy to avoid because the range is so much further.

When I was a kid after about a hundred throws I got a plastic boomerang to come back at me, where I completely missed the catch, hit me in the lip split it and ended up with 5 stitches. Probably a good thing the real hunting ones don't come back.

Hello Shad, heard your rant about the range of throwing weapons in general... We're doing re-enacment with soft headed javelins lately. We're missing the hard points that would stick in shields and make them useless, but that would kill our friends, so no. :) But it made us use them differently, when the first lines clash then it's second to third line weapon and throwing it against anyone who happens to be looking elsewhere is devastating.
