Looks like too much Sugar to me. It would be too sweet if you put Preserves or Maple Syrup on the Toast to serve. And Brioche or Challah is already a sweetened Bread!
Dear Jean, MyGerman mother used to make this just like yours, so I know it's top of the line! Perfect to the ones who want the true French Toast! Not a speedy recipe or a fancy recipe. Just what us oldtimer Germans jumped out of bed for! Lookers, look no further. This is the vintage German method (too) even with some fruit. You you cannot get any purer than this if you want very old methods that give you perfect French Toast that I was fed in the morning in the 50's from someone born in the range of 1900. Merci Jean!
@@misschris662 or Zigeuner Schnitten or Fotzel Schnitten (Fotzel=Bandit) or Toast Dorés in Quèbec Golden Toast with maple syrup als like Berliners can be tipped in Cinnamon sugar and some butter melted on top....Nothing the French say French was invented in France not even Croissants or Eclairs, all came from Italy or Austria.
@kseminole: Gruëzi! My mother was born and grew up in the German part of Switzerland 🇨🇭 ❤️ 🇩🇪, and made French toast this way as well! She spoke the Swiss-German dialect of Zurich, plus spoke proper German and French excellently. Jean-Jacques Bernat's accent sounds very much like my mother's did. Interesting! Perhaps his origins were in a more southerly part of France 🇫🇷?
@Leon The Professional It means what the heck have fun. Do as you like and enjoy. Its a magic word for just relax everything is cool and nice. And do not worry too much about how much of what. Throw it together. It must taste nice. How can it not be with all of that? Even one egg, 4 eggs A bottle of milk or a cup and if needed add more.. And half cup or half bag of sugar as you think. Viola.
This looks like a great way to have french toast. I grew up in a French Canadian home, and my mother added a little real maple syrup instead of brown sugar, but added cinnamon, and a little nutmeg in with the egg. With real maple syrup on top. What a way to start the day.
French Canadian here too :) I agree wth always using cinnamon, vanilla & maple syrup. Have you ever tried to use less milk but add a mashed ripe banana? Add extra nutmeg!- yum🤗
Grew up just south of Canada in upstate NY and you can’t beat pure maple syrup My mom used the cinnamon n nutmeg as well. I can’t do artificial “syrup”.
And some “chefs” says the bread doesn’t have to be soaked too much, there you have it pseudo chefs, a real french chef tells the bread have to be soaked well, take that.
Yes well, I actually soak my bread for anything up to a half hour for both sides then cook in good ole canola oil, pat dry with paper towel when cooked, garnish with tomato sauce and bingo, inside is almost like, just cooked scrambled egg, hum, back shortly, just going to the kitchen. MAXXAUS
Ohh geez man I thought you are serious bru. what? Sorry mrs Im not drunk I promise. Where am I? please what were we making I mean doing? huhhh man this is a nice program. What am I looking at? who are you people?
My version of french toast (from a Jew raised in Montreal): Eggs, touch of milk, pepper, garlic w/butter, parsley. Slightly stale bread Cook bacon first, reserve grease. Use grease as oil and cook 2 pieces at a time max without letting them soak, creates soggy middle, Le puke. Cover with real maple syrup. Voila!
I started using brioche to make French toast several years ago and WOW! It really took it to another level. I had always had just regular white bread French toast. Can never go back now.
My wife made French Toast this morning (first time in ages) and we only said it but didn't research any recipes. And now a few hours later this is in my suggestions on RU-vid. This is madness but voilà it's the world we live in.
“A good start to the morning” love it. I would need a nap 2 minutes after eating that BUT for those that can eat this and have a great morning ENJOY, looks amazing, if I could I would.
looks pretty simple. The main difference between this and what I've done in the past is the brown sugar. Never thought of putting that in the eggs. Sounds like something good to try.
That's gourmet french toast ! My mom used to make it for "le gouter", the afternoon after school snack. But french toast is usually made with slightly stale bread rather than brioche, in fact it's called "pain perdu" (lost bread) in french. And I never had it with berries and coulis, rather on its own with maybe a sprinkling of brown sugar with cinnamon, and no sugar in the batter. But that's the way my mom made it. I guess every mom had her own recipe.
Yes, similar story here. In Sweden we call them 'fattiga riddare' which means 'the poor knights' because you are using stale, left-over bread. I find using fresh bread just gets too soggy. Also, we just make it with eggs, milk with a pinch of salt and then sprinkle cinnamon on top whilst frying the bread. We then serve it with a jam (I prefer lingonberry jam). So there's really no need for sugar, syrup, vanilla extract etc.
My grand ma was doing the same way with regular bread: older it was, more milk she used. With brioche I would not use anything, beside the eggs. Unless it is "aged";)
I will use from time to time when I have no milk or cream, I will use Coffee Mate vanillin or hazelnut or whatever is available. It really is very tasty.
CLUMSY WITH HIS FRUIT LAYOUT AND STRAWBERRIES HAD SOME GREEN NEAR STEM LEFT ON THEM. I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF MIXING BROWN SUGAR IN THE LIQUID...AND CINNONIM IS A MUST. THE RASPBERRY SAUCE SOUNDS GOOD.
I like his French toast ‘light way’ with that amount of sugar.... I also like his measurement, he just adds each ingredient and unsure how much it has been: hmm 3/4 cup of... (in the camera and and the magic is VOILA). Just watching it I can become diabetic types 2. Anyway very enjoyable. Seen several times.
I usually melt and add butter to the egg mixture, along with vanilla essence and sometimes cinnamon. And cook on nonstick. Makes it extra healthy for my kids 😋😋
Sweetpea 3399 maybe those who have the sense to see it is a heart attack or diabetes waiting to happen. If they eat this every day it would be very unhealthy. Must admit though I was drooling 😝
He puts to much brown sugar in his eggs. That's bad for your healt. I make french toast since I was very young. The recepie is egg, lowfat milk, cinnemoon and a little bit of sugar on the toast when it is in the pan, just for having a crost. It is a Belgian recepie and calls "gewonnen brood" or in French "pain perdue". In the world war, when the brea was becoming to old to eat, they made this to tecover the bread for their familys. So they had not to trow away the bread.
Very nice! My mother didn't put any kind of sugar in hers (brown or otherwise), but used a bit of cinnamon with the milk and eggs. But like anything, there are thousands of ways to make it. Nice video, thank you! I bet at Christmas you could substitute eggnog for the eggs and milk, or at least the milk, and add some nutmeg. Hm! Glad I just thought of that...have to try it!
When I was about 8 years old, I learned how to make French toast by watching my uncle make it. His recipe wasn’t as fancy as this one. I’m going to try this one. Around the same time, I learned how to make bacon and eggs by watching my grandfather make them. For years that was all I knew how to cook. Happy holidays and bon appetite everyone!
Yes better cinnamon them brown sugar Real France people do not make France toast like that Not with brioche too sweet and not with brown sugar only eggs milk slice either bread better if few days old
Voilà, Voilà. Let me add more sugar, Voilà. Let me add more butter, Voilà... Let me add more fattening and super unhealthy ingredients, Voilà. Let me make sure you get a heart attack by eating this, Voilà....
I think there are many versions of French Toast. No one is right or wrong, just different. Back in the 70's there was a recipe for French Toast in a magazine that was part of an article on Carol Burnett. It was a recipe she used for her family. I have been using it ever since. It has grated orange rind and cinnamon added to egg and milk mixture, then dusted with powdered sugar when finished. My family loved it. I use coconut oil to cook with now and it adds an interesting flavor in.
Good job buddy. Use the extra dark brown sugar and vanilla extract ( 2 caps full) and once the toast is in the pan spinkle cinnamon over the top. Mmmmm
I’m so pleased to see a chef drop a shell bit into the egg. It doesn’t happen to me often, but I always feel like such a clumsy cook. Now I know it happens to the pros too.
That's NOT traditional french toast as the description says. Traditional French toast, regardless of what country youre from, is not when your adding sugar, not to mention when sugar is pretty much the main ingredient Traditional french toast is eggs and milk and maybe a little bit of seasoning, versus this chef who is making candy toast
No need to drive when you can make your own bread like he does. No need for fancy braiding. I let my bread maker mix a big batch of dough, put in the fridge to age (it tastes better every day as the gluten works itself) and i can make a quick loaf w/ stew or spagetti. Sometimes I freeze one ready made, or just freeze a dough loaf. You can make raisin bread, whatever you like.
Not the way we make french toast, in England, lol, we’re definitely missing a few ingredients in our version ~ our ingredient’s list consists of bread, eggs and some butter or similar for frying ☺️ I might try it this way but without all that fruit, I prefer mine with brown sauce
Thank you, chef . It looks delicious. I've been telling my family this is the best way to make French toast for ages. Now having seen you make it, guess what they want for breakfast tomorrow? Thank you again
Now I have to have to some...c'est délicieux! 😋Merci I drive my kids crazy when they call me for old family recipes now, because it's always (a little of this, a little of that). I don't measure anything either.
"Lost bread". If you really want to go there, the real recipe was created by the poor so that they didn't throw their "lost bread" away, this was not brioche, it was real bread. Milk in one plate, eggs in another - pour bread in the milk first, then in the eggs so that you create some kind of "omelette" around the bread. Then fry in the pan. Once ready, sprinkle anything on it. It is supposed to be a "one course" meal. The only one the poor could eat sometimes. The poor couldn't afford throwing their lost bread away and couldn't afford buying brioche, cinnamon, fruits and what not.
Never milk to eggs mix eggs with the milk or your bread will fall apart before it even hits the pan. Unless it's old, rock hard, four day old real poor mans bread.
Holly Day sorry this recipe comes originally from Spain... to use old day bread and also eaten during EAster lenth and holidays . During those days Of hunger they used and ate anything and everything have several recipes to use dry old bread and other things. These type of toast was brought to France with their Spanish wives of French kings married spanish princesses Luis XIV, Napoleon III etc.

"voilà" is now dated. Today it is "allez hop" or simply "hop" for almost every steps in any procedure. Kind of annoying to my French Canadian ears, I admit.
You make French Toast like my mom did. Sometimes she added a bit of pure Vanilla extract. Though I alway's preferred it with just butter and real maple syrup! Great memories! Of course even though I'm 67 now, mom's food was much better than mine!
