No cameras in the courtroom is not going to stop public opinions and social media is not going to stop talking about the case. I believe it is better to have cameras so the public sees firsthand what's really being said in court which would help them to identify false information and doctored videos on social media.

As a taxpayer in the State of Idaho, we have rights to see this trial. Idaho is a large state and it is hard for people to travel across the state to attend the hearing in person. By allowing cameras this will allow all citizens to view the trial. I would even be okay if they banned cameras before a jury is seated but once a jury is seated they should allow cameras, this way there is no tampering with a jury pool.

Well, if someone could follow the rules in the first place and NOT zoom into the defendant, maybe it wouldn’t be a big deal. So maybe letting the crime channel recording should get a lot of comments on how they were part of messing it up. People can’t just watch, they have to make videos on how he looks guilty because he was clenching his jaws. I did tell that so-called doctor know how horrible it is to even say such a thing with the man under so much pressure. It’s people like him screwing up our right to watch trials since they can’t use common sense themselves and not accuse someone of guilt. There was so much traffic around that house between 2:45am and 3:15am. A video shows like 5 individuals running away from the house on a body cam. Quite a few other videos out there now Four or five students running away from the area of the house where the murders happened towards a frat house around the time of the murders. Also different vehicles in the area. Plus how did other kids know about these murders prior to the police. Happy it's innocent until proven guilty as well. I really believed from the beginning it was him now. I'm kinda in limbo, to be honest.

I watch that channel and the good pastor is more concerned w/the well-being of the victims' families; wholeheartedly behind them. So it's understandable he's rooting for the FBI and prosecution prematurely going w/the huge amount of evidence they proclaim to have against this guy. Seems the FBI is a little wobbly about that since they didn't wait a day before they showed up unannounced at night at a witness for the defense's house pressuring her to change her testimony and affidavit (by a devious, but transparent explanation that anyone over 35 would recognize). AT didn't believe their explanation for doing it, the judge is pondering it still, I believe.

Hi Peter, Yes to cameras, but only to ONE fixed camera with ONE wide view of the courtroom and better audio quality. The best interests of everyone (public, defendant and media) are served if the courtroom rigs it up satisfactorily. I do however think there should be some restraint in live coverage. I like that events are captured and relayed later. It would help protect proceedings imo. If the goal is justice, there needs to be some healthy, reasonable compromises. 100% of the public and media can't assume it has 100% access 100% of the time. High-stakes DP cases can't survive the scrutiny and sensationalism of social media. Yes to moderation, control and quality. ✅ This also begs a larger question: the judge's decision could set the tone for witnessing his ability to control his courtroom (see 14:00 in, the legal analyst is right). Why is this relevant? I read it's one criticism of the judge (controlling his courtroom), *and* he has NEVER presided over a case of this magnitude. I would LOVE to hear an in-depth spotlight on this judge. Intuitively, I'm unimpressed with him (and I've seen a lot of trials, and have worked for litigation consulting firms). My concern is we have another Judge Ito. Overall my experience of the current camera/sound/media setup is like watching CourtTV: Hooterville Edition (this is 2023, c'mon). Thanks Peter!

Well, we do but it is very limited in England and Wales. e.g. if you recall, cameras were allowed in for arguments in the Supreme Court concerning one of Johnson's misdemeanors. Correct me if I am wrong, but Scottish criminal trials can be televised. In medieval England and Wales, however, cameras are limited to the judge's sentencing and cannot show the defendant or any other court actors. Bizarrely, the only place where a trial (sic) might be fully televised is a public application for a liquor licence to the local licensing committee.

@kenbash2951, I watched OJ’s trial. I remember like it was yesterday. That trial was a media circus. But at that time, it wasn’t about if he was guilty or innocent. At the time, there was so much racial tension going on out in California, NY/NJ (where I’m from), across the US and around the world. To many, it didn’t matter if he was innocent 😅 or guilty. What mattered was the color of his skin. That was the trial of the century, but it really wasn’t about guilt or innocence. If you remember the trial, I don’t need to tell you the encyclopedia of evidence they had on him. Didn’t matter how much evidence they had on him, it was racially motivated. For God’s sake, after the trial, he wrote his book, “If I Did It”. Only when he found out that the Goldman family would receive any proceeds from the book, did he stop the press. But the Goldman’s made sure it was still available for anyone to buy. You can still buy it on Amazon because of the Goldman’s. It’s quite the read. But anywho, that trial was extremely covered, and a murderer got off scott free. Who am I to judge? Nobody. If guilty, he will have to answer to a Higher Authority someday. There are many people who think Kohberger is innocent. For me, I’m just waiting for the evidence. So media or not, people are going to believe what they want and that means jurors as well. Cameras should be allowed in the courtroom. We should all be able to have access and see how our judicial system works. The good, bad, or ugly.

This is how my city hall does it for broadcasted city council meetings. Mount two cameras in opposing corners of the courtroom. They capture a wide shot-no zoom. A technician sits outside the courtroom with a broadcast tool/software called a telecaster that allows them to switch from one camera to the other to follow action on opposite sides of the room. There is another technician with an audio board connected to various microphones in the courtroom (at the court’s discretion). This ensures better audio quality and the technician can mute mics as needed. I’d be happy if all courts would just do this. Media can tap the live feed or receive a recording within hours.

I think having cameras in the courtroom are in the best interest of both the prosecution and the defense! Having cameras to ascertain transparency is desperately needed to prove our American justice system really works. Without transparency things begin to appear suspect which raises doubt amongst Americans and leads to lack of faith and trust in our entire American justice system! To not allow cameras makes not only the defense look suspect but makes one question whether our entire justice system is really still on the up and up or not. I just think cameras should be allowed!

They don’t care about being educated (there’s plenty of other examples to educate yourself with), they just want to be entertained. Why are people not demanding cameras for every case there is if transparency in justice system and right to information were the reasons? Because they don’t care, they just want to watch the specific ones that interest them. The public can attend the trial at the courthouse, they have no right to watch it on TV. It's our right as citizens to know and experience every detail of the trial. As learning about the murders of the innocent victims,we have become attached to each one and their families. This case is so tragic and has pulled a large community together to demand justice for them. Travis Rudolph immediately came to mind for me. That case and the Rittenhour case imo are two of the actual trials where broadcasting/live streaming helped to correct the media bias and help the public see the particulars in real time. It bought honesty to the table. Courts can either choose to be open and deliver particulars directly to the public where the public can watch and learn or the courts can shut the door and allow a third party to disseminate what happens inside a courtroom to the public. We are waiting to see if Judge Judge wants to keep the reins or hand them to the media. And weirdly it is the media claiming they desire to keep the cameras in the court. Feels like gamesmanship to me. If cameras are in, the media outlets can still carve and chop and deliver spin to the public who watch their channels. BUT reality is since we have a cyber communication channels now, the public can opt to read the docs and watch for themselves instead of accepting only the clips and analysis any media source provides.

I do not think the cameras have been intrusive overall. There have been some shots where the camera has been zoned in on BK that I thought lingered to long, but nothing obnoxious. Most of the shots are from the back showing the defense table, the prosecution table and the Judge all at the same time. Whoever the pool camera team is could actually put one camera on the wall in the back and set the angle to see the Judge, D table and P table and the witness and leave it at that. They could zoom in on the witness or the Judge if needed and keep both the D table and P table in view during an objection, etc. We really don't need to see BK at all. Yes, it's nice to see reactions, but the important part is happening at the witness stand and with the Judge. We never get to see a jury anyway and they are the people who make the biggest decision of all. I agree with all of that. I get the impression that many attnys just don't want to be on tv or YT because it makes them nervous and that isn't a good enough reason to bar cameras from the room. Their insecurities, IMO, are the last item to be thought about. The People have rights as well and that is very important to me. The Court system is open to the public and the public should be seeing this trial. I believe this for every trial.

The media response is playing semantics with ‘focussing’ that yeah we zoomed in on him but we also zoomed in on other people an equal. The issue with that is there is a greater opportunity for prejudice when zooming on him as opposed to other paid professionals in the room, especially in an environment where everyone will scrutinise every move a defendant makes. And even if the media isn’t making those prejudicial comments, they know by releasing or using certain footage that it will encourage those sorts of commentsbecause that drives engagement.

Cameras should be allowed. It’s not going to effect the trial in a negative way. The jury will have already been selected. Cameras will force the attorneys to be at their best on both sides and offers a transparent hearing. All eyes will be watching and making sure it’s a fair trial. Yes cameras should be allowed

I prefer cameras in the court room because I get to see and hear the case myself. I think that can benefit a defendant as well if truly innocent. I also understand as in this case how media can twist things beforehand and convict someone already for ratings and it's so widespread that it affects a potential jury. So it's more mportant to protect the right to a fair trial. I know I'd want that if I was ever a defendant. So I think it's up to the judge.

I would hope the cameras still stay in the courtroom. There needs to be responsibilities in case some news outlets take things out of context. Judge Judge should make decision if cameras stay in the courtroom. Media outlets need to listen to the judge. Case closed

Why not let CSPAN do it? They basically install a few cameras and press play…or whatever. They are not playing clips of Nancy Grace, Ashley Banfield or Jennifer Coffendoffer. I would think that’s actionable.

I think there is a fair compromise with using a single fixed wide angle view, no zoom, no change in focus. Also, the footage is released on delay so it could be ordered that only footage on the record is to be released, ie once the judge is on the bench until he is off the bench. So no zooming in on his walk-in and walk out.

You giggling at the X user/ his fly comments in this affidavit is so endearing.Cameras need to be in the court room but I do believe that they shouldn't be able to zoom in on BK and for the media to not focus on his attire or his body language. Report the facts and don't insert their personal position. We wouldn't be in this situation if the main stream media wouldn't twist word or sensationalize. Video is crucial to that part of any case and transparency.

I believe cameras should be allowed in the court room but cameramen held in contempt when they don't follow rules. Like in Peterson when they showed a jurors face twice and the one where they were zooming trying to catch conversations with lawyer. I think that was Kouri Richins.

Absolutely! We want to see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears the testimonies of those involved so we can feel that justice is being served to the best ability of the court system. I think the Depp/Heard trial is a perfect example of this. The majority of those who watched the trial were very satisfied with the verdict; those who didn't, not so much.

As much as I would like to see this trial, and have enjoyed others, this is not Hollywood. Or Netflix or reality tv. I disagree that the media has rights to have cameras, or that the public has a right to see this streamed live. The judge determines the best course. It should be considered a privilege, not a right. And the media abuses the privilege.

I think the media absolutely should be able to discuss this with the judge to give their viewpoint. I also think that having cameras in the court is fine, as long as the rules are followed. Even if it’s one camera feed and the cameras are still cameras set up at certain areas, similar to the starch trial. It is the public’s right to have access to trials to ensure that it is a fair trial and also helps us have an understanding of the processes. Thanks Peter!! You are awesome!! 😊

Cameras are not necessarily disruptive or favor one side. A dark courtroom seems an unnecessary restriction, given the advances in camera technology. At least give the media a fair chance to make their argument. The judge can restrict or ban coverage if he believes it’s being unfair to the defendant. IMO. Judge Judge has shown himself to be a fair arbiter. I think a dark courtroom doesn’t sit right with the majority of viewers. TY. From Moscow.

Look at the Scott Peterson murder case. Judge Delluchi allowed no cameras in the courtroom saying "This is not the Super Bowl." But there were cameras everywhere outside the court. It was a frenzy of gossip, drama, and speculation. If cameras were allowed in the courtroom, the truth of the evidence could have been digested by the public. I am strongly in favor of cameras in the courtroom. These are public trials and we should seethe truth, not a pre-chewed journalistic take.

I think that for the sake of accessibility and clear, maximally useful records, all court trials should be recorded at minimum by audio, and video in any case where testimony or visuals are especially relevant (as well as by transcript, if people really want to). A lot of information is lost in the translation from spoken to written form, but the technology to remedy that not only exists, but is readily available, and as has been pointed out, better and less obtrusive than ever. Text-only records are antiquated, and not the most useful format anymore. That said, for the sake of maintaining the integrity of a trial, it would be important to impose and maintain certain rules upon the media, such as releasing footage on a delay or fully after the trial, requirements for the equipments used (like in regard to the camera’s zoom capability, or the microphone’s sensitivity, for example) in order to ensure the cameraperson has little choice but to follow the rules. There would be kinks and bumps and bad actors, but that has and always will be the case, especially when new technologies, practices, or policies are being introduced.
