Thank you for this interview coverage with Judge Newman. I agree with you about him being someone that you would want to hang out with. His demeanor and his "quiet authority", as well as his sense of humor made a difficult trial easier to take in. A class act.
Absolutely LOVED this! I wish we could get more from Judge Newman. I also wish he wasn’t forced to retire at 72. He is still doing an amazing job and the whole world got to see that. ❤
I work in a law firm in Columbia, SC and literally, as I'm watching this interview, one of Judge Newman's clerks came in to pick something up from one of our attorneys. Of course I told him what I was watching and took the chance to gush over the Judge and what a good man he is!! His clerk agreed and said he is truly a nice person!!
Hi Peter. I sat on a Jury for a trial where a teen disclosed that their step father had abused them for years. When we deliberated, 80% of my fellow jurors did not believe the teen but I was aware that many of their arguments seemed to be based on their biased opinions that "children/teens often lie". I insisted that we go back to the Jury Instructions that the Judge gave us, that brought us back to the evidence that was presented at trial. In the end, after much review of the evidence, we ended at 100% guilty against the step father. It was a fascinating but grueling and emotional experience, knowing that we had the future of two people's lives in our hands. Thank you for all that you do. Just wanted to share my experience of serving on a jury in case it was interesting and/or informative to you and other subscribers to your channel.
Is not Judge Newman absolutely amazing? He is very wise and filled with wisdom!May GOD bless and keep his hand upon him continually!!♡☆Loved the way 🙏 he did his job so graciously!!
Morgan Freeman was my first thought to play Judge Newman but playing himself would be amazing!! The justice system will greatly miss Judge Newman....so many judges out there could use a 101 course with him and learn about being a top level judge. Great video and thank you for posting! Keep up the great work!!
Judge Newman was the judge who presided over the murder trial of Nathaniel Rowland, who murdered Samantha Josephson. She was the young lady who mistook Rowland for her Uber driver. Judge Newman did an outstanding job throughout. His remarks to Rowland's mother at sentencing, who tried to say that her son was innocent, shut her down absolutely. He is wonderful.
Thanks for covering this fun interview! I sooo appreciate your humility and the grace you extend to others, despite any differences. This channel is a safe place to have vigorous discussions plus it’s fun! It’s refreshing to see great attorneys without narcissistic tendencies. Other chats feel dismissive and cliquey so I’m grateful to be here. Many blessings!
I liked this Judge during the trial, getting to see the personal side of him in this interview I like him so much more. He’s smart, witty, funny and down to earth, wish him nothing but the best and hopefully looking forward to him doing other things after he retires
Love this man! I appreciated how he remained composed and had a calming presence, while dishing out clever quips here and there. Definitely has the best chair! 💙Judge Newman!
The first time I watched Judge Newman was for the Nathaniel Rowland trial. He was amazing for the sentencing phase of that trial as well. We need more judges like him.
Thank you for mentioning that case. I had meant to follow it, so I went back and listened to the opening and closing statements and sentencing. Absolutely love this judge!
I'm so glad you covered this! This judge has my utmost respect! People like him should be teaching the younger generations because of his integrity! Thank you as always Peter!
Thank you Peter for sharing this great interview. I thought Judge Newman was amazing. So intelligent and so charismatic. He is one of those people that is so pleasurable and fascinating to listen to. He made me smile each day of that 6 week trial.
I love this judge. He has a sense of humor and seems to be very thoughtful. I immediately thought of Morgan Freeman too. BTW, I totally agree with your decision to avoid politics on your channel. I fear the tolerant, kind and respectful chat you have established would devolve into name calling and hurtful comments. Keep being you.
Thank you for covering this interview Peter. I have jury duty on May 1st and from everything that I have learned from your videos, I feel like I am definitely able to be a fair and impartial juror.
This was a talk at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio on March 28, 2023. It is Judge Newman's alma mater. The interviewer is Judge Brendan Sheehan, the Administrative Judge for the Court of Common Pleas for Cuyahoga County, Ohio. The room is the Moot Trial Courtroom at CSU. This was open to the public. Judge Newman spent his first few years in Cleveland practicing law before returning to South Carolina.
I’m now wondering if the no notes for jury was a state law or Judge Newman rule. Seems to me that he was saying that he believes that if you don’t take notes a person is paying more attention to what is being said and/or life fully as it’s happening! I really like him. Thank you Peter! After listening to your Gwyneth Paltrow summaries, I like and respect you so much more! I have been a part of several personal injury cases. My Father was hurt, I was on a jury for a work injury case and unfortunately, I have had a work injury in which I had to have an Attorney. Very different experience with each one situation, you were able to explain how a person would feel in each situation! Plus, I can tell you are very passionate about your role in helping your client!! I wish I would have been able to experience that during my own PI case! Thank you again!
This interview showcased the grace, humility, and professionalism of Judge Newman. A similar interview with Judge Dorow from the Darrell Brooks trial is on RU-vid. I would love to hang out with either of them!
I think this is a good man who has, undoubtedly, faced many racial hurdles to rise to a judge at the level he has in South Carolina. He is intelligent, compassionate, yet strong and steady. He should be remembered for modeling the most important character traits for a true leader. I hope he can continue to inspire more generations of young people from every background to live their lives for truth and justice!,, So blessed to have ‘met’ thanks to technology!!!!!
This was awesome! Judge Newman is the epitome of a class act. Morgan Freeman is the perfect actor for his role! Same voice even. ❤ Very interesting to hear a debriefing from the bench.
There is an actor Clarke Peters who played a character in The Wire, Lester Freamon. If Morgan is busy, Clarke is awesome. He did this look over the top of his glasses, and a slow sarcastic comment, as that character, an absolute double for Judge Newman.
One thing that stood out to me in the trial. Why, after mentioning the "old cabin/cottage" located somewhere on that Mosselle property, did no one ever testify that it had been searched, that night or ever??? I mean, why not??? If there was a killer on the loose, etc, why did no one search it??? They searched the newer big house. Cabins generally have some kind of water, closets etc, that should have been searched.
Really enjoyed seeing your response to the Judge's interview. Also, it is always great to further humanize someone after watching him/her in the professional arena.
I admire this judge immensely! He always conducts himself with natural grace & dignity! Forced retirement for him at age 72! Such a loss for the legal profession 🙏🙏❤
Now is time for Judge Newman to write books, I am sure he has a lot to share through his amazing career and I am sure it would immediately be best sellers... no other Judge would have been better than him to handle the Murdaugh case
Hi Peter. Judge Brendan Sheehan interviewed Judge Newman at the Court of Common Pleas in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland, OH). Judge Newman graduated from Cleveland State University and Cleveland Marshall College of Law. It was really cool to see Brendan interview Judge Newman and I can’t wait to talk to Brendan and get his thoughts (he’s a friend of mine). Just thought I’d give you the background information.
Could Judge Newman ever end up on the US Supreme Court? He is extremely likable and wise and if he wants to keep working that would be a position that does not have an age limit
I was in the final group to qualify for a jury but I told the Judge that not only could I NOT be impartial but had brought charges against 1 of the persons involved.
Have you seen the Emily d podcast from yesterday.Apparently Alex filed a motion on 21/3 to take out $160k from the untainted funds, to go towards his attorney fees. they were more than he expected - over $700k, excluding other costs. He wants that money from the Receivership escrow account (which i think came from the 401k fund originally) If the court does not grant this, he will have to depend on the Public defender for the appeal. Mark Tinsley is obviously objecting to the motion, since the money is earmarked for the victims, such as Mallory Beach family.
Great stream Peter, thanks for covering Judge Newman's interview it was very interesting and insightful to watch. I vote that he plays himself if ever there is a movie made, if not it has to be Morgan Freeman for me
Been with you since the beginning!!! The Johnny Depp/Heard trial seems like it twas years ago🤣😂🤣. Proud of you!!! Just a silly comment…., I swear every time I watch you…, it’s a whole new background and anticipation on “what will Tregos’s hair look like tonight?😆😘
This was so good Peter, thanks! I agree, I only thought of Mr. Freeman playing him in a movie! Judge Newman is truly an icon. I don't like the mandatory retirement age thingy in SC though, I must say that. Mr. Newman seems to have more than enough life left in him to make clear judgements.
Judge Newman has my deepest respect! Just the fact that his brain doesn't need a lot of Note writing, reminds me of my own brain in my younger days. It was a quality I was proud of until my boss retired and her replacement did not have memory skills and was intimidated by mine. It was disappointing to realize that there were people like her who made work so cumbersome. Needless to say, Judge Newman is an intelligent man of principals who also has a great sense of humor!
Dennis Haysbert!🎯🎯🎯 He played President David Palmer in 24, was the Allstate guy with the great voice... he's done a kajillion different acting roles. I'd love to see him play the judge.
I love him so much!!! I so want to hang with him and Judge A. and just have lots of cocktails and talk about all their best, craziest, and funniest case’s!!! Thanks for sharing!
I love this Judge. They way he worded his statement too Alec when he sentenced him were so on point, eloquent and perfect. It’s sad that he lost his son due too a medical condition and Alec killed his son that had to certainly affect Judge Newman. No parent should bury a child. This has to be one of my favorite judges ever.
I know it would never happen, but my immediate thought after judge Newman said that he would be looking for something new in November was “Will Lawtube get its first judge streamer?!”
Thanks for presenting this, it was good :) He's definitely a humble, level-headed & intelligent guy. And human too. His words & body language emphasize that. It's when people in power abuse & lose their humanity & conscience that things fall apart. Ironically meaning this judge was on level ground at the starting line long ago with Murdaugh. Maybe even a little less so. But both running the same legal race. Crazy... (If this case had the outcome that people thought was deserved, I don't believe it would continue to trend the way it has. Some feel his punishment wasn't enough; many sense something unsettling (unsettled?) about the outcome - but few can pin-point with conviction what it is. Maybe it's the way it was handled &/or the leftover puzzle pieces - a picture incomplete. Only A.M. can fill those blanks.)
I immediately thought Morgan Freeman as well, but seeing he is 85 and Denzil is 68, I can see his wife's point. Thanks much for your analysis, I like your balanced approach and how you like to deal in facts as well as how you state when something your saying is a statement of your opinion and not a statement of that. That is in short supply these days where many have been taught to consider sources or just plain lack discernment.
Love this judge. So calming, smart, funny... I've never heard of an actual age a judge has to retire. The judge in the obsessed ex boyfriend trial that ended a couple weeks ago is older than 72. He needs to retire. But this one is still sharp. If he's able to and wants to work longer...why not?? His forced retirement in Nov should be a sad day unless that's really what he wants.
I am SCREAMING!!! I said, Morgan Freeman and when you said it, I almost fell out my chair. And then when the judge said it I did fall out. Amazing. It's decided then 😅
This was amazing thank you for providing this information to us. I think he's an amazing judge and I think he would be an awesome professor. Thank you again!
He has thusfar been the best judge I have seen in action! Definitely Morgan Freeman!!! I could hang out and shoot the breeze for hours with Judge Newman!!! Tops!
