As a teacher this one is hitting close to home. My heart goes out to Peterson. Why does he not have an appropriate communication system?! It was a known issue! I can’t get past that. I’d bet the football team has better equipment than he had. I bet they wouldn’t allow sports to go with second rate safety systems. So why allow the radio to not function properly?! If he’s a caregiver then he needs constant contact with anyone who might require assistance.

Boy I'm really struggling with this one. But in the end, I think for those looking to place blame, there is plenty to go around, beginning with Nikolas Cruz. Let's not forget that. And I do not believe the state met the burden of proving Peterson acted with gross, flagrant utter disregard. This is also such a slippery slope, IMO when we start holding SROs criminally negligent. Civilly, maybe. Just so sad all around.
@Irish100

Yes and calling a Police Officer a "Care Giver" to me puts this on a whole new level. I understand he was a Resource officer at the school but I can tell you one thing they will not find many officers that would entertain that job when this is over either way. Cruz murdered those children NOT Mr. Peterson. My son is a Detective so this hits home for me I'll tell you that. SMH
@KatlynJShute
@KatlynJShute Год назад
Agreed! I think he completely froze. He was a 28 year SRO so he didn’t have the experience with someone who was shooting like what officers may encounter out on road patrol. He froze but I don’t think he is to blame for the deaths on the 3rd floor. People knew the 911 and radio systems needed to be fixed but no one did anything. I think SP was thrown under the bus by justifiably angry parents. If we hold SP accountable then they need to also hold the sherif and other people with any authority accountable right along with him. I was worried the jury would convict him since NC wasn’t given death but thankfully he was found not guilty. I hope one day the parents are able to sit down with him and talk and come to an understanding.
@naomivantonder1161

@@KatlynJShuteI do not think he froze. He did everything he could with the limited resources he had. His radios were not working. None of the police communication reached him because there communication channels is not linked. He had to go in blindly. The state was pathetic. especially when she said it was as if this was as if he wanted the kids to die. What a lot of bull. I would feel ashamed to have delivered this closing argument. What idiot decided to take this to trial in the first place.

@ahslye5645
@ahslye5645 Год назад
He absolutely did. I don’t know if the defense brought it up because I’ve been watching this and the melly trial. It was actually less than 2 minutes from when Peterson made the fireworks/shots fired call to when the last student was shot. The first issue lies with the Federal government not providing ample protection funding to the states. Next, the State of Florida failed its county school districts by not passing legislation mandating preventative measures (e.g., video surveillance, guard-monitored fenced and gated campuses, metal detectors at entries, keyless entries for staff with self-locking doors, staff emergency notification systems that notify local law enforcement, and legitimate staff training) for each school campus/facility in the state. Finally, the local school district must prioritize student safety over other costly initiatives. Scott Peterson is the scapegoat. As a current teacher in a public school system, I am considered a caregiver. We have a specific protocol for emergency-shooter scenarios. We are instructed to shelter in a lockdown stance (to hide). The expectation is for the teacher and students to be sitting ducks while waiting for the shooter to pass by or arrive. That is crazy. If you go against protocol to save your students, you could be held responsible if someone is harmed. The lack of a protocol that the SRO felt comfortable and confident with shows that safety measures were actually not in place. Scott Peterson did not kill those students, the shooter did.

I need to think on it and review the facts more before I can really decide one way or the other, but I'm leaning towards thinking that Peterson shouldn't be held criminally responsible. I'm not sold on the argument that he's a caregiver in the context of that law. He was responsible for the safety of the students, true, but only in the way that he was responsible for public safety and also assigned to the school, and that's pretty central to much of the State's case. If this was a case of freezing in the face of danger, I don't think that should be held criminal. If he knowingly *avoided* helping, that would be different, but as I said, I need to look back at the facts and think on it all a little longer before I've made up my mind.

Right?!? Not to mention, the ratio of Peterson versus ALL the students at Parkland HS… there is literally no way you can be a caregiver for all of them. You can only be in 1 place at 1 time as 1 human. You can’t be responsible for something that happens to students over football field away from you, inside one of many buildings that you are not inside, etc. This trial makes me sick. Prosecutor makes me sick. Just another example of misguided prosecutors trying to appease grieving parents, some of whom are extremely aggressive & misguided in their efforts to point the finger at so many others than NK

When did we stop blaming the shooters themselves? Peterson may be morally guilty, but criminally guilty? This sounds like a civil case not a criminal case. As for parents of minors who are grossly negligent or try to cover up for their children, then yes bring charges. *Appropriate* charges

They need to leave the cop alone. He was a victim like everyone else. If this is being pushed by the victims's families, they are mentally deranged and are pigs that don't fly straight. If the families really want justice, the persons who should on trial is the Snead Family, the family that Nikolas Cruz was staying with when did the shooting. They were the ones who allowed him to keep the guns in the house and they are ones that made it possible to allow Nikolas Cruz to do the shooting in the first place. If anyone is cupable, the Snead Family was. I'm surprised the Snead Family hasn't been sued for wrongful death 17 times. (The number of victims killed.) It's amazing we talk so little about the Snead Family and how they allowed this to happend. They say the Scot Peterson was cargiver to students but it was the Snead Family that was the caregiver of Nikolas Cruz and they are really the people who guilty of neglect.

Blame the communication system. Teachers carry radios but Mr. Peterson isn't advised as to where the shooter is. Cops off site have info that he doesn't have access to.
@daniellereid6539
@daniellereid6539 Год назад
The parents wanted Mr. Peterson to behave like a cop should. Cops testified that they're taught to run past kids who are bleeding out. Getting to the shooter takes priority. They sacrifice a kid in order to save other kids. Imagine if he'd done that? The next cop who works at that school better have the rules and expectations in writing to cover his ass legally. Did Mr. Peterson even get any training?

I was a teacher, and although I was responsible for the children for my class, yes I was also responsible for all children in the school and could reprimand them if I saw something wrong, I think this lawyer is given a bad statement on responsibility/caring for kids in school, when we enter school grounds we all become one to all students until that last one leaves. Then we start the process over again the next day!! Just saying 🤣

We are a teaching family.Peter, security at our schools, security are well-known to all students . All staff are caregivers in different ways our district but helping keep the kids safe is primary. Peterson did his job. Peterson is not guilty.It's true ,intercoms can crackle,there is echoing in all schools in our district and often walked talkees and cell phones don't work in parts of campus sometimes. That's a district problem. It's not a good idea for an officer to carry a weapon at all times in all schools. And.security needs to be given walkies that work everywhere. it's confusing on a lockdown ,despite many practices. Lives we're lost ,young lives and Peterson did do something. I'm so sorry there was a shooting. He's not guilty imo.
